MAT brings a Robin Hood panto for Christmas Alex Ross aeross@havredailynews.com Montana Actors’ Theatre will mark the holiday season with its production of “Robin Hood — A Panto.” MAT Artistic Director Jay Pyette said a pantomime, informally known as a panto, is a style of theater commonly performed around Christmas, where a children’s story is told in satirical fashion. “It’s a children’s story as told by Monty Python,” Pyette said. A panto, he said, often features a male playing the lead female role and is filled with local references. Last year MAT did a production of “Hansel and Gretel: A Christmas Panto” which Pyette said was very well-received.

Havre churches celebrate Christmas
Paul Dragu pdragu@havredailynews.com
Christmas season is here and there are few groups more invested than the Havre churches whose foundations are based on the root word of the holiday. A long tradition at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church has been the live nativity scene. Weather permitting, the live nativity scene continues this year, scheduled for Dec. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. “A Journey to Bethlehem and Beyond,” the collaborative live Bible scenes put on by multiple Havre churches in past years has been canceled this year. Greater Havre Area Ministerial Association Chair Curt Curtis said it was difficult to get so many people to stay still in the cold. After the live nativity scene at Van Orsdel Dec. 2, people are encouraged to come back to Havre Assembly of God for a fellowship supper that will probably include finger foods and dessert. Earlier in the day, at 2 p.m. Havre Assembly of God will be showing the older movie, “The Nativity.” Anyone is invited to watch. Havre Assembly will also hold a candlelight communion service Christmas Eve at 6 p.m.
Fifth Avenue Christian Church will hold three services Christmas Eve, one in the morning at 10:45, and one at 2 p.m. Fifth Avenue will also put on a children’s Christmas Program Sunday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m. that will include a play in which the Christmas story is be told via a radio broadcast. St. Jude Thaddeus Church will hold a Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. and mass Christmas Day, the first starting at midnight and one later in the morning at 9:30. Community Alliance will continue the tradition of putting on a self-scripted play. This year’s play, “Breaking News,” is based on a script Pastor Tim Zerger bought but needed a lot of work so it can speak to those past 10, Zerger said. The premise of “Breaking News” is the events of Jesus’ birth through the lens of 21st century reporters, Zerger said. A Christmas variety program is constantly interrupted by breaking news from the Holy Land, where the birth of Jesus has shaken things up. Members of Messiah Lutheran Church are also planning to put on a play, which will be acted Dec. 10. Details regarding the play are still in production.

Lunch with Santa set at Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line Havre Daily News staff Local children will again have a chance to have lunch with a familiar Christmas face when the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors bring Santa Claus to the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line. The meal with St. Nicholas is from noon to 1 p.m. Dec. 9. Parents are asked to stay with their
children during the event. As part of the holiday season, the Ambassadors are holding a food drive for the Havre Community Food Bank. Any nonperishable food item brought to Lunch with Santa will be given to the food bank. The lunch is free for children and has a $2 charge for adults.
Community Thanksgiving in Havre Havre’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner is set for Nov. 23 this year, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Jude Parish Center, 440 Seventh Ave. Sponsored in full by an anonymous donor, this decades-old event serves more than 600 free meals — at the Parish Center and t h ro u g h h o m e d e l i ve r i e s — e a c h Thanksgiving. Many locals come to the meal, bringing family, meeting friends or making new friends across the table, but people also come from far and wide, as well — some visiting and some in town for other reasons.
More than one occasion has seen stranded travelers taking part. Many diners come just for the experience. A professional chef takes the helm in the kitchen, supported by kitchen staff at Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, who roast the turkeys, and a full crew of volunteers, who do everything from setup to cleanup, including delivering and serving meals. Diners are treated to succulent turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, fresh vegetables, corn and rolls fresh from the oven, followed by a slice of pumpkin pie.

Havre’s Festival of Trees Following the downtown tree-lighting ceremony Saturday, the 10th Annual Festival of Trees kicks off at the Boys & Girls Club’s Multipurpose Room at 500 First Ave. Organized by the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line, the Festival of Trees raises money for the club’s youth afterschool and summer programs. With the club’s expansion and remodeling projects complete, this year’s funds will go toward expansion of services, said Executive Director Krista Solomon. Individuals, groups and businesses fully decorate and then donate Christmas trees created with imaginative themes or unique twists, like a popular movie theme or a “tree” made from a fully stocked wine rack. During the evening event, which includes hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, a no-host bar and games, the trees are sold to the highest bidder in a live auction and donated items are won in games or sold at auction. Past donations included a hand-made quilt, an African photo safari, one night at the Fort Benton River House, an armoire, a fire pit and grill, baked goods and a lot more, Solomon said. This year’s donation list includes a seaside vacation, a TV stand with a fire place underneath and a quilt, with more donations coming in. Tickets to the Festival of Trees, 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 25, can be purchased by calling 265-6206 during regular business hours. Though 240 tickets are sold each year, they sell out well before the event, so people are encouraged to call right away to see if any tickets remain. Beta Sigma Phi looks to spread holiday cheer Alex Ross aeross@havredailynews.com
The Xi Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi once again will be helping out local families as well as residents of the Northern Montana Care Center for the holiday season this year. Beta Sigma Phi is a nonacademic sorority not affiliated with any university. Xi Tau chapter members said their group focuses on serving the community. “What we do is try and raise money and pay it forward in the community,” chapter member Christie Johnson said. Members of the sorority will use money raised from its Nov. 19 Beta Craft Auction to adopt families in need, where a sorority member will go out and buy gifts or food for a family facing economic hardship, Johnson said. The sorority works with area churches
to provide this help for the families facing economic hardship. Xi Tau member Claudene Calvert said churches in Havre will provide the sorority with a list of names of families in need for whom they will later buy gifts or food. Calvert said the families on the list are identified by church members who know of a family that faces tough economic times. The chapter also takes part in Northern Montana Care Center’s Adopt A Resident Program, Calvert said. The program identifies residents who do not have a family, and people can then go out and buy a gift for one of the residents. Johnson said the sorority is always looking for more members. People who want to learn more or wish to join can email the sorority at Calvertcw2017@ gmail.com.

Havre’s oldest historic home is tentatively planned to be open to the public Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10, from noon to 3 p.m. each day for the Fifth Annual Christmas At The Cottage event. People are invited to visit this historic treasure to see it decorated for Christmas and enjoy hot cider, mulled wine and treats while relaxing in holiday splendor. The Cottage was constructed circa 1895 and was home to Daniel and Elizabeth Boone. Daniel Boone was the proprietor of Boone’s Drug Store, and both he and his wife were active in Havre socially. Emily Ann Mayer, the current owner, is the third occupant of the home since it was built. Mayer is a member of one of Havre’s oldest families and is avid about Havre’s history. This special event, combined with Elizabeth. Boone’s love of throwing lavish parties, showcases Mayer’s love of Havre’s heritage and her commitment to it by opening her private home to the public for the Christmas season. Traditionally, The Cottage has been decorated with different themed-trees throughout its rooms. This year, though, a single theme will be featured with each room having a different interpretation of the theme. As is customary, the subject of the theme will not be released until the week after Thanksgiving. Admission is a free-will donation that will be used toward a new coat of paint for the neighboring historic Mathews home, the site of the High Line Heritage House Museum. The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce and participating lenders and businesses again are offering what the Chamber calls a great opportunity to help with Holiday shopping: Christmas Cash. Holiday shoppers can secure their Christmas Cash loan at participating lending institutions. The Christmas Cash can then be used at 48 Chamber-member businesses. Interestfree Christmas Cash loans from $500 to $1,500 are available, with approved credit, at Independence Bank, Stockman Bank and Bear Paw Credit Union. The program has had significant impact on the local economy over the past years by keeping more than $7 million in Havre supporting local businesses, a Chamber press release said. Close to $150,000 was loaned last year. “Using local businesses for your holiday shopping is a great way to support your community,” the Chamber said. “These small business owners are the heart of the city and
are deserving of your business. Give them a try.” Christmas Cash is a program of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce made available to Chamber-member businesses during the holiday season. The mission of the program when first initiated in 1990 was to stimulate the local economy during the holiday by keeping money in town, supporting local businesses. This is still the goal today. “We need to thank the community for using and supporting the Chamber’s Christmas Cash Program these past 27 years.” the Chamber said in the release. “Also, a thank-you goes out to the participating financial institutions — Bear Paw Credit Union, Independence Bank and Stockman Bank — for continuing to be our partner in providing this program to the community and to the businesses that participate in the Chamber’s Christmas Cash program. Let’s make the 28th year another successful year for the program.”

Dinosaur Christmas coming Dec. 9 Alex Ross aeross@havredailynews.com The H. Earl Clack Museum Board will hold its annual Dinosaur Christmas party Saturday, Dec. 9. Museum Board Chair Judi Dritshulas said the event is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m in the Holiday Village Mall outside the museum entrance. The celebration geared toward preschool- and elementary school-aged children, is free, Dritshulas said. This year’s activities have not yet been decided, Dritshulas said. Last year’s activities included cookie and gingerbread house decorating, making beaded candy canes and paper snowflakes. Organizers, she said, would welcome help from volunteers. “We still have our usual group, but the more the better,” she said. People interested in volunteering should call the museum at 265-4000 Tuesday-Saturday between 1 and 5 p.m and leave their phone number and expect a call back from event organizers, Dritshulas said.
