I am pleased to report that Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy’s fiscal year ending May 31, 2019 was one of continued financial stability. As you will read in the pages ahead, it was a year in which the HPA Fund broke all of our school records, alumni giving nearly tripled, and judicious investment in our physical and technological infrastructure brought tangible improvements to life across both campuses.

Over the past several months, as I have come to learn more about this remarkable place and the community of students, teachers, parents, and alumni who make it what it is, I have been heartened by the abundance of generosity, innovation, and aloha found here. At every turn, I see our students participating in meaningful work as their teachers guide them through the process of learning, creating, and discovering. Central to the philosophy of Aristotle is this same idea of meaningful work: energeia. For Aristotle, meaningful work—being deeply engaged in whatever it is we are doing—is key to a good life. As HPA continues to make steady progress on both our Strategic and Sustainability Plans, we also keep meaningful work at the heart of what we do; educating our students so that they might lead lives of meaning and virtue. We see this thread carried through in our alumni ‘ohana; HPA graduates are giving back to their communities and to their alma mater in remarkable ways. They are moving and changing the world with their creativity and courage, and we are proud to count each one as part of our ‘ohana.

As I write to you from March 2020, we are grappling with the novel coronavirus global pandemic. Though these are trying times for us all, we know that we will be stronger and more connected for having carried on through this together. I am honored to assume leadership of this great institution, and I look forward to sharing more good news on our progress across many fronts in the months and years ahead—as we meet our ambitious sustainability goals, increase our capacity to provide financial aid for students who need it, and continue to provide the kind of education that enriches lives and shapes communities. With aloha,

Operating Results HPA finished Fiscal Year 2019 with operating revenue of $19.99 million and expenses of $20.30 million, resulting in a $300,000 operating deficit. This deficit is not unusual for a secondary school of our size, and is largely the result of an institutional commitment to invest in program and in facilities. Nonetheless, the deficit does indeed represent the opportunity and the challenge before us as we work to match our vision for and belief in our school with a corresponding base of support. In fiscal year 2019, tuition and fees covered 76.5% of our expenses. Our endowment supported 13.5% of HPA’s operational expenses, with an additional 5.5% funded by income from Auxiliary Programs, and 3.6% from contributions to the HPA Fund. Between the endowment and the HPA Fund, past and present donors collectively provide more than 17% of the resources necessary to provide

students with the unsurpassed opportunities HPA affords. HPA recruits world-class instructors by offering competitive compensation, benefits, and professional development opportunities to facilitate a broad curriculum and enriching academic, athletic, and global learning experience for students. Costs of compensating and providing benefits to our employees comprise more than 60% of operating expenses. Other expenses supporting the HPA experience include utilities, insurance, academic and student support, dining services, health and wellness services, information technology services, and facilities management costs. Furthermore, HPA continues to invest in the capital renewal of our physical plant and technology infrastructure.

Capital Expenditures

Enrollment and Financial Aid

Capital Expenditures in fiscal year 2019 totaled nearly $1 million. The Facilities Team managed more than 50 major projects including Village Campus classroom remodels, safety and security updates, and continued energy efficiency and sustainability projects, which will help reduce institutional expenses in the long-term. Capital expenditures also included classroom and athletic equipment, kitchen equipment, and IT needs.

For the 2018-2019 school year, HPA enrolled 114 K-5 students, 99 Middle School students, 213 Upper School day students, and 187 boarding students. Financial aid for the 2018-2019 school year exceeded $3 million, allowing more than 50% of the K-12 student body to attend HPA with financial aid.

Philanthropy Donors to Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy contributed roughly $1.2 million to HPA during fiscal year 2019, including $711,635 to the HPA Fund, $17,343 to the endowment, and $474,601 for capital projects and restricted giving.

Endowment The endowment is an important resource for HPA, providing more than 13% of the revenue needed to run the school. It is made up of externally-managed endowed trusts, funds designated by our board to function as a permanent endowment, and approximately 80 funds established by alumni, parents, and friends to provide permanent support to the school. The total value of HPA’s endowment is approximately $45 million. Of this, $24 million is controlled by HPA and its board of trustees, and $21 million is managed externally. HPA is also one of four designated beneficiaries of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. The total market value of HPA’s share is roughly $35 million, and the annual distribution in FY2019 was approximately $385,000. A majority of the trust’s assets are composed of undeveloped pasture land, which accounts for distributions at a level under typical market returns. Investments for donor restricted and board designated funds are overseen by HPA’s Investment Committee, which is made up of trustees with significant investment and financial expertise. The investments of the endowment are managed to provide for the long-term needs of the school. HPA’s endowment spending policy and investment strategy share a goal of minimizing the volatility of endowment revenue available to fund operating expenses. The amount spent in any one year is based on the market value of the endowment (as determined by a twelve-quarter trailing average) multiplied by our endowment draw rate of 4.5% but within a range not less than 95% of the amount spent in the prior year, or greater than 105% of the prior year spending. This formula slows down or buffers the effect of any market rise or fall on what is spent from the endowment to support operations. In a volatile year for markets, the HPA endowment returned -.24% for the fiscal year, reflecting the impact of global economic influences. HPA’s endowment asset allocation represents diverse holdings focused on value preservation over time, including investments in domestic and international equities, fixed income, alternative investments, and cash.

GIVING: MAHALO NUI LOA!

I hope this finds you safe and well during these unprecedented times. As we reflect on HPA’s past year, I want to acknowledge the challenges of our current circumstances even as we look forward to connecting in brighter times. As individuals and communities across the globe grapple with COVID-19, all of us at HPA send good wishes for health and wellbeing to our entire Ka Makani ‘ohana. It is my hope that this report brings reflection of where we have been and hope and trust in where we are going together...

2019 was a banner year for generosity at HPA, and it is indeed a pleasure to formally celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of so many from our ‘ohana. HPA alumni, families, and friends from within our community and beyond are coming together in record numbers for the school we all love, and it is remarkable to witness! Because of you, the HPA Fund had its most successful year ever, and the percentage of alumni giving nearly tripled, from 5.8% to 14.5%. First-time donors to the school increased dramatically over previous years, and it is clearer than ever that when we all come together, we can make a difference for every student. As an institution, HPA is working hard to honor our past as we invest in our future—to be firmly rooted in the traditions and values that have always defined Ka Makani even as we embrace our bold vision for sustainability. We are guided in this work by the legacies of the giants and pioneers of our golden era as well as our current Strategic Plan. Over HPA’s 70-year history, we have remained a home to spirited students, alumni heart, and connection to place–and we continue to thrive. On behalf of this special school, I extend heartfelt thanks to each of you for your part in honoring our past and building our future. Me ke aloha,
