FROM THE
Aloha dear friends! Those of us who live in Hawai’i are surrounded by extraordinary color everyday, beauty in every hue and shade. Your Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra has created a world of color in sound that will delight and enchant you. We invite you to experience the rich tapestry of our new season, brimming with sonic delights that will color your world with music. It is a great privilege for me to be the Artistic Advisor of our superb Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra, and to help put to together a palette of extraordinary concerts for you. This season features many of your favorite pieces - from Vivaldi’s beloved Four Seasons to Grieg’s gorgeous Piano Concerto to Beethoven’s inspiring Ode to Joy. Your HSO offers you the opportunity to “escape from the everyday” into a magical world of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Dvořák and many other composers, brilliantly brought to colorful life by our great musicians. We are also celebrating the 250th birthday of the most loved composer of all time - Ludwig van Beethoven - in a mini-festival of his greatest works. There are some surprises too, for instance, a brilliant new violin concerto composed by Danny Elfman (of Batman, The Simpsons, Dumbo and of course Nightmare Before Christmas). Our superb principal oboist J. Scott Janusch will give the world premiere of a concerto written especially for him and his extraordinary new oboe made of native Hawaiian kauila wood. Plus, many of your favorite conductors and soloists are returning this season, along with some new discoveries. Your HSO plays and loves the classics, but we are so much more! We have music to suit everyone’s style. Enjoy our musicthatPOPS, concerts and the movies, holiday celebrations, and the return of Brody Dolyniuk performing the Music of Queen! As a subscriber, you can enjoy pre-concert discussions (hosted with great humor by our own concertmaster Iggy Jang), pre-concert and post-concert events, camaraderie, drinks, food, friendship and fun. We invite you to “compose your own season” to create your perfect mix. Our home of Hawai’i holds so much beauty and color. And your HSO is a magical part of life here, bringing people together, building community, introducing young people to music, and celebrating our world. I hope that you will be a part of our season, and color your world with music! Mahalo nui loa! See you at the Symphony! Warmest wishes,
JoAnn Falletta, artistic advisor

Saturday at the Symphony
Saturdays are different at the symphony! Before the Halekulani Masterworks Saturday concerts we present unique pre-concert events that offer great gathering places before the performances, where fellow symphony patrons can enjoy camaraderie, upscale food and drink. Live musicians or a DJ spinning tunes bridges the gap between a night on the town and a night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall with your Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. Once you’re at the concert, drinks and dry snacks are allowed at your seat inside the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Check out HISymphony.com/Saturday for more details.
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
The HSO has a long, rich history of educating Hawaii’s youth. Since the mid-1900s, the orchestra has performed in free educational concerts in McKinley Auditorium and the Blaisdell Concert Hall, where thousands of students have experienced a live symphony orchestra for the first time.
POP-UP AND COMMUNITY CONCERTS
You never know where the HSO might pop-up next! In 2018-2019 we held three community concerts, an instrument “Petting Zoo”, and our highly anticipated, annual Symphony in the Park on the Windward side. These outreach concerts bring the HSO closer to all residents on Oahu.
