Q A
What is your fondest memory of Heritage?
I have a lot of fond memories from Heritage. Most of them revolve around the tight knit community we had. I stuck with the same class for nine years, and so after a while you become more than just classmates; you become family.
How do you see Heritage Christian School impacting the Iowa City, North Liberty and Coralville community?
Q A
One of the most valuable things that Heritage provided for me was a framework for knowing God deeply. At the time, I don’t think I appreciated all they taught me about who God is and what He has done. Looking back, if it were not for the training and studying of God’s Word I had received from Heritage, I would not be as equipped to be obedient in making disciples today. I believe Heritage’s passion to provide quality education can transform the community for good so that others may see their good deeds and give glory to God in heaven. But more than education, through teaching students to be passionate worshipers of God, Heritage can transform this community for Christ so that as students are sent to wherever their careers lead them, they can be obedient in making disciples of Christ for His glory.
Q A
Tell us a little bit about what your life looks like right now.
I have been married to Jodi for three years, and we currently live in Iowa City in our first house together. Jodi works at ACT as a Senior Product Coordinator. I currently am the college ministry director for Grace Community Church Downtown. Right now life is busy, but fulfilling. We spend a lot of our time reaching international students and other college students for Jesus. God continues to shape and refine our life together to look more and more like Him, and for that we are thankful.
Q A
What have you seen God doing through Grace Downtown?
We have been active in the downtown community now for two and a half years, and God has been so gracious to us. We gather weekly at Old Brick in the heart of campus, we serve a meal to college students every other week after service, and we are seeing more and more students call Grace Downtown their church home and family. Among these students there is a growing international student population who we are laboring to reach, so that the gospel can spread to the ends of the earth. Overall, we see ourselves at Grace Downtown as a family of missionary servants who God is using to show this community what Jesus is like.
Q A
At what point did you feel God calling you into ministry? And why Iowa City? I remember when I was a sophomore at the University of Iowa, I began to feel that God might be asking me to be obedient and follow him into vocational ministry. By the time summer of 2011 came around, I decided to take an internship with Grace Community Church helping out with the youth ministry. I took this summer as a time to seek God and pray to help me determine if God wanted me to go into ministry. Over the course of the summer, I really found that I had a passion for God’s Word and seeing students become effective disciple makers. The reason Iowa City and the University campus is so strategic is because the University culture shapes the culture of this city, and its impact spreads across the nations. Students are trained up and sent out as business men and women, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and engineers. If these young professionals are sent to the nations as effective disciple makers of Jesus, then the world will see more clearly what God is like and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus as these men and women work and live their lives unto the glory of God. Ultimately, this is what matters. We want to see not only our city reached, but global Christians making disciples of the nations for the sake of the name of Christ and his fame.

2015 IOWA ASSESSMENTS AND DRA TESTING Each year, students at Heritage Christian School, along with other students across Iowa and the nation, take the Iowa Assessment. This test serves many purposes for our school and our students. Iowa Assessments measure student achievement and growth across many different subjects, the results help parents and teachers identify a student’s academic strengths and monitor a student’s progress over time. It also allows us to compare their academic performance to other students in the state and nation allowing Heritage to formulate decisions on curriculum and instruction. Another way Heritage monitors learning is through the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The DRA is a standardized reading test used to determine – and monitor – a student’s reading level. Through the information gathered with the DRA, teachers can provide appropriate instruction for each student and work towards greater reading comprehension.
