e all listen to music. We all have a favorite song, a favorite artist or band. Music conjures memories and nostalgia. Music evokes emotions. Music is important.
Equally important are the artists who create these “soundtracks of our lives.” We believe that we should all get to know the people behind the music, that we should take an interest in the well-being of the artists, especially when the statistics show that the majority of working musicians do not have a regular income. An even bigger number of working musicians do not have dependable healthcare insurance. The Jeremy Wilson Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit service organization that provides musicians and their families with emergency financial assistance in times of medical crisis. The JWF, to-date, has provided numerous grants and have aided in preventing homes from going into foreclosure, assisted an artist with recovery from Crohn’s Disease, another artist with an eye transplant, and several artists with cancer treatments. These are just a few of the stories. Blacksparrow Auctions is honored and proud to present Band Together, a charity auction benefitting The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, featuring 257 lots of vintage memorabilia and rare collectibles from iconic artists and bands, including the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, Roger Daltrey, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, B.B. King, KISS, Smokey Robinson, Metallica, Jim Morrison, Willie Nelson, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry, Tom Petty, Chrissie Hynde, The Pretenders, Quarterflash, Sonic Youth, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys, and more. We are also pleased to offer a group of concert experiences that feature the Decemberists, Dandy Warhols, and two exclusive concert packages from Monqui Presents. We are also happy to offer items from the personal collection of award winning music producer, Ralph Sall, that includes original autographs from luminaries such as Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, Smokey Robinson, KISS, Sammy Hagar, among others. Finally, we are excited to present a unique collection of vintage 1800s and early 1900s musical instruments from the collection of Ken McMeans. There is something for every music collector in this auction. More significantly, the proceeds from this sale will support the great work from The Jeremy Wilson Foundation.

234. Late 19th Century African Horn Chordophone. The class of chordophones, comprising instruments that produce sound from strings stretched between fixed points, are well represented in Africa. Most have strings made from animal remains attached to some kind of hollowed gourd to amplify the sound. This specific instrument was made with an animal hide covering the hollowed gourd and cowrie shell accents along the rim. Remnants of the fur is still visible. Circa late 19th century. Measures 8” x 17”. Right top and bottom tuning pegs have broken off. Otherwise, in very good condition for it’s age. 235. 20th Century African Tribal Kora-Senegal Chordophone. An ancient harp-like instrument, which has vertical string holders with two ranks of strings, a bridge in the form of a standing figure, and a half calabash hollowed. This instrument with strings is very close to the guitar, played throughout western Africa. The resonance box (or resonator) is usually made from a half calabash or gourd with a wood post to which the strings are attached. The calabash is covered with goat or cow hide. Harps with carved vertical string holders such as in this are rare to find. Drawing on cowhide with cowrie shell accents. Measures 6” x 22”. In very good condition. 236. Lute Sapeh (Hasapi) from Borneo, Sumatra. The Toba Batak people of northern Sumatra create elegant, two-stringed lutes known as hasapi (in Borneo they are called Sapeh) and made from the trunk of a tree). These lutes are mostly used in intimate indoor settings. Today, hasapi are generally played as part of musical ensembles. The composition of hasapi ensembles varies but typically includes a lead hasapi playing the melody and a second hasapi playing accompaniment, as well as a flute, small drum, xylophone, and other instruments. In the past, most Batak music was sacred and, among other contexts, the hasapi was played as part of a love-magic ritual designed to win a woman’s affections. However, virtually all Toba Batak are now Christians and hasapi music is intended as secular entertainment. Measures 5” x 32”. Exhibits missing strings and one tuning peg. Other tuning peg broken and adhered with duct tape. Otherwise, in good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $25 74

238. Yueqin Chinese Moon Guitar. The Yueqin’s name is commonly translated as “moon lute.“ Yueqin tradition dates to the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). The instrument is most often found today in Beijing opera ensembles and as an accompaniment in dance songs. The resemblance of this round lute to the full moon (yue) gave it its name. The Yueqin developed from a much larger long-necked lute that appeared in the Qin and Han dynasties. Its four strings are tuned in pairs, a fifth apart. Measures 14.5” x 25”. Label at bottom torn. Very minor wear. Otherwise, in excellent condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $75
237. Mid-20th Century Nepalese Sarangi Beggars Fiddle. The Sarangi is a folk Nepalese string instrument. Traditionally, in Nepal, the Sarangi was only played by people of Gandarva or Gaine cast, who sing narrative tales and folk songs. The Nepali Sarangi is made of a single piece of wood having a neck and hollowed out body. The body is carved into a hollow frame with two openings. The lower opening is then covered up with dried sheep-skin. The original strings were made out of sheep intestine. The village people allotted intestines of sheep, sacrificed during major festivals like Dasain, to the Gandarvas. The Gandarvas left the intestine in a pot for some days. Once the meat was fully rotten, it was pulled out, leaving behind the fine nerves of the intestine which were then woven to get the strings, which produced fine quality sound. The Sarangi has four strings and is played with a horse hair bow. The Sarangi’s neck is fretless and the bridge is seated on a skin stretched over the body of the instrument. Different notes are made by touching the strings with the nail of fingers of the left hand. This Sarangi is most likely over 50 to 60 years old. Measures 3.25” x 16”. Strings no longer attached and 3 wooden pegs are missing. Otherwise, in good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. 242. Vintage 1873 American Fran Schwarzer Concert Zither with Case. This concert zither is also known as a fretted zitherit has a fingerboard affixed to its soundboard, like that of a guitar but much shorter in length. Five strings pass over this fingerboard, and the performer plays these strings like a guitar, picking them with the right hand and making various different notes by pushing down on the strings with the left hand. The right hand is also used to play the open strings, which provide bass and chord accompaniment. This Concert Zither was made sometime around 1873 by a European Zither maker named Franz Schwarzer who had immigrated to the U. S. in 1864. He made only the finest quality instruments and this zither may have cost as much as $1,000 at the time--more than the cost of a house. In 1873, he entered three of his zithers (including this one) into the International Exhibition in Vienna and won the coveted Gold Medal of Progress. Franz Schwarzer is considered one of the greatest instrument makers in history and there is a museum in Missouri which endeavors to preserve his life and legacy. This specific instrument is in museum quality condition and in fact, museums are one of the only places you would likely find this instrument today. Measures 22.25” x 11.5”. Case measures 23.5” x 13”. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $100

246. Vintage 1910 American Osborne Pianoette Thumper. One of the most unusual accompaniment gizmos for early 1900s zithers is this “chordthumping” device. The player lifts the tab of choice, then releases it, causing the apparatus (which is equipped with a hard felt pad) to spring downward, striking the 4 strings of the selected chord all at once. As one might imagine, the functionality of the chords would be quite limited if the chord thumper alone was used for accompaniment. However, in the default at-rest position, the thumpers are up off the strings, leaving the accompaniment section available to be played in the usual manner with the fingers. So, the thumper gizmo, used occasionally for effect, actually expands accompaniment functionality by a bit. Measures 13.25” x 18.75”. Exhibits minor surface scratches. In very good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $25
248. Vintage 1917 American Schmidt Liberty Guitarophone. The Guitarphone is a fretless zither that has four sets of chord strings (that criss cross the melody strings) to be strummed with the left hand and two octaves of double melody strings, which are struck by metal hammers activated by the right hand. The hammers are mounted on spring steel and produce a mandolin-like sound from repeated bouncing on the strings. This instrument has a warp in the center that prevents the middle hammers from operating properlythe warp can easily be fixed by an instrument or furniture repairman. With the exception of the warp, it’s in good condition. This instrument is similar to the Marxophone and Celestaphone, both used frequently in recording studios if they can be found. Measures 13.5” x 19.5”. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $25
247. Vintage 1910 American Felix Schmidt Mandolin Guitar Scroll & Pillar Style. The scroll-and-pillar body style of this zither is a frequently encountered design frill for early 1900s zithers. The scroll and pillar are purely ornamental and serve no functional or structural purpose. The vague resemblance to a concert harp was intended to legitimize these zithers in the minds of prospective buyers. Measures 13.5” x 21.25”. The pillar has broken off. Exhibits surface scratches. Otherwise in very good condition for its age. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $25 79

250. Vintage 1928-1930 American Ukelin with Two Sound Holes. The Ukelin (and Ukelin-like instruments) were usually sold by door-to-door commission salesmen, often on a time-payment plan beginning in about 1923 until 1964, and were intended for home music-making by persons without a formal musical education. The instrument is meant to be placed on a table with the larger end toward the performer, and, while the right hand plays the melody on the treble strings with a violin bow, accompanying chords are played on the bass strings with the left hand using either the fingers or a pick. Each string and chord group is numbered, and sheet music is provided in a special numerical system intended to simplify playing for persons unable to read standard musical notation. For the most part though, the public found them difficult to play and many buyers defaulted on their monthly payment plans long before they had paid off the Ukelin. Measures 7.5” x 27.5”. Exhibits minimal surface scrapes on face of instrument. Moderate surface scrapes on verso. Otherwise in very good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $35
251. Vintage 1929 American Marxolin with Case. The Marxolin is considered by many to be the most unusual and unplayable instrument ever made. It was presumably designed by Marx to resemble a 1930s roadster. It has two bodies stacked on one, 18 strings that are bowed with a double bow (which allows you to play thirds all the time, like it or not) and a number of gizmos including four metal chord thumpers (replacing the need to strum chord strings), that produce a Hawaiian steel guitar sound (hence the other name of this instrument– the Hawaii’lin), and two little levers that raise the pitch of the strings a half step, in theory. The other gizmo is a wire music holder though some claim it is a string damper. Who knows– with Marx it could be anything! Instrument measures 20” x 6.75”. Comes housed in original 7.5” x 21” case with felt lining. The case shows moderate age and wear, but in very good condition. Instrument shows some wear. Four screws at lower left and right are missing. Fading of label at bottom. Some yellowing from glue residue. Otherwise, in very good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $100 80
252. Vintage 1929 American Rolmonica with Music Rolls. The Rolmonica, described in its advertising as “a player piano in your pocket”, was an automatic harmonica that could play tunes via a small paper music roll. This fitted inside the unit and was turned by a crank handle at the side. It was one of a number of musical instruments apart from the player piano that was operated by a music roll and possibly the smallest of the instruments fitting in to this category. Originally patented in the USA in 1925 it was not until 1928 that it was patented again and actually put into production. By 1930 its sales seem to have been effected by the onset of the Depression as it was sold at reduced prices with a greater number of rolls. However, production of Rolmonicas appears to have continued well into the 1940s, although whether this was by the original company or not is uncertain. The Rolmonica is made of Bakelite, which has the significance of being the world’s first synthetic plastic. The “retro” appeal of old Bakelite products and labor intensive manufacturing has made them quite collectible in recent years. Measures approximately 4” x 4”. Comes with 3 music rolls and a 5.25” x 5.25” wooden box. Not tested for functionality. Otherwise, in very good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $75

253. American Mountain Dulcimer Instrument. Custom made mountain dulcimer. The instrument is essentially a fretted zither traditional to the southern Appalachian mountains of the eastern United States consisting of a narrow fingerboard attached to a larger soundbox underneath. Never widespread and found only in scattered pockets of tradition, the dulcimer since the 1950s has gained popularity outside the mountains and is today widely used by both amateur and professional musicians for primarily folk-based repertoires. Measures 37” x 8”. One of the strings have broken off, but can be fixed. There is a crack between the top two sound holes. Some minor scrapes on back of dulcimer. Otherwise in very good condition for it’s age. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation. Starting at $75
254. Vintage 1932 Hawaiian Tremoloa with Case. The Tremoloa is a unique stringed instrument belonging to the extended guitar-zither family, produced in America in response to the rapid increase in popularity of Hawaiian music during the 1920s and continuing to be produced until the 1950s. The Tremoloa simulates the tonal effects of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar by passing a weighted roller stabilized by a swinging lever (termed a bar or arm), along a single melody string and creating a tremolo, an effect which also gives rise to the instrument’s name. The instrument also possesses four chords, to strum out the harmony with the right hand, while using the attached pick on the thumb of the left hand. Measures 26” x 13”. Comes with a case. The case shows substantial age and wear but in usable condition. Face of instruments exhibits minor surface scrapes at top and bottom right. Moderate surface scrapes and the number “0480” engraved on verso. Included with manufacturer’s instruction and music sheets. Overall, in very good condition for its age.
