COUNTRY SUPPLIER ANALYSIS For the Immoderate Man we knew that our country would have to have skilled leather workers and at least some sustainability standards. The reason being our company’s values center around a sustainable brand and environmental awareness for the manufacturing of our vegan leather men’s accessories. We first discussed all of the countries that we interviewed that stood out as having skilled leather workers, we then discussed which economy we were most comfortable entering given their current situations. This helped us narrow it down to our initial four countries, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. After discussing the reality of doing business in these countries we considered things such as minimum wage and the stability of the economy. The United Kingdom had a very high minimum wage and even though we are a luxury brand this dissuaded us from wanted to manufacture in the United Kingdom. We quickly realized that Hong Kong would not be able to meet our standards in sustainability and quality, we replaced that choice with Portugal. Leaving us with our final three countries Portugal, Spain, and Italy.
During the ranking of Portugal what really stood out was how well they recovered from the depreciation of the Euro in 2008 when a majority of Eurozone countries are still struggling to stabilize their economies. Portugal also has a very low inflation rate of 0.3%, low child labor rate at 3%, and a surprisingly high literacy rate of 95.4% in people over 15 years of age. These are all major bonuses to our company. Along with the country’s top industries which are textiles, apparel and footwear, and wood and cork, these benefit our company tremendously. Their unemployment rate is at a record low 13.6% which seems high but in Portugal’s history it is the lowest they have seen. The country’s parliamentary democracy government isn’t experiencing a lot of corruption and is dedicated to helping the economy recover without exercising a heavy hand with businesses. The low inflation rate relates directly to the ease of starting a business in Portugal or doing business with them, along with the easy availability of credit. Another benefit of working in Portugal is the lack of natural disasters that would effect lead time, river flooding is the only potential issue however dam systems reduce the number of actual floods. The transportation time from
one of their major ports to Los Angeles is 37 days, which is not the shortest transportation time out of our three countries but still a beneficial factor when considering our country choices. When considering trade agreements, we noted that Portugal has four currently with one in the works (TTIP), however the only one that is directly related to the United States is WTO and TTIP when it is completed. That being said we still want to do business in this country, the benefits of skilled labor at a reasonable price in a stable economy outweighs the lack of current trade agreements with the US.
I
-07-
taly we were a little more hesitant in choosing due to it’s struggling economy due to the 2008 Euro crisis. They still have a large labor force of 25.52 million and an extremely high literacy rate at 99% and out of our three countries the labor cost per minute is the highest $0.33. Their skilled workforce and luxury market were what drew our company in. Their record low inflation rate at 0.1% also benefits us because it brings down the cost of utilities and transport due to falling fuel and petrol prices. The economy is heavily influenced by the country’s parliamentary, democratic republic, and multiparty government, which is unstable due to the drastic economic differences in the North and South. Due to the economic instability and slow court systems many major investment projects have been attacked which presents a risk for doing business in this country. Their geographical location however is prime for air and sea exporting, located in the central Mediterranean. Exporting from their three international sea ports to Los Angeles takes 41-45 days, which is longer than Portugal but still not extremely long. The benefits of doing business in this country such as increasing production, the important role it plays in the textile and apparel industry, tourism wealth, and the high profitability of niche products, along with skilled leather workers encouraged us to pick this country as one of our sourcing choices. Italy is a part of four trade agreements, all of which directly benefit its trade with the United States making it a great choice for trade with our company. Spain was also affected by the 2008 financial crisis but in 2014 they managed to bring their GDP growth rate out of the negatives into a positive 1.3% growth rate. Through government implemented labor, pension, health, tax, and education reform the country’s economy is becoming more stable and shows promise. The inflation rate is extremely low at -0.1% and they have a rather large labor force of 22.93 million. Improving relationships with foreign investors is a big part of Spain’s plan to improve and stabilize their economy further, which means it is a good time for us to enter their market. Spain has a conservation policy in place to help preserve their forests and natural resources, this regulates agriculture as well as tourism activity that impacts their environment. This was huge for our company given our standards for sustainability. One of Spain’s main industries is the textiles and apparel industry, which has seen growth since the financial crisis. Manufacturers in Spain are working to build customer loyalty by showing willingness to provide the products they desperately need to manufacture, which will increase the growth in the textile and apparel industry in Spain. Spain is a part of WTO but does not have any specific trade agreements, due to their fledgling status in the new world. Due to the importance of sustainability to our brand we looked to the Environmental Performance Index to see where our country choices ranked. This ranking looks at health impacts, air quality, water and sanitation, water resources, agriculture, forests, fisheries, biodiversity and habitat, and climate and energy. Italy ranks 22 out of 178 which is pretty impressive, but is beat by Portugal which ranks 17, and Spain blows them all out of the water coming in at 7 (Environmental Performance Index).
SUPPLIERS
Manufacturer choices in Portugal proved to be a trying task due to the lack of transparency or list of customers. We first looked at Decorpele which appears to be a great find because they manufacture many varieties of leather goods including bags. However, we were unable to find a list of customers listed on their site. From digging in their site we see they have fifteen years of experience and are used to fulfilling large orders, which is good for lead times. They talk about how they handle the textiles briefly however there are no sourcing guidelines on their site. The lack of sourcing guidelines makes us question whether we should do business with this supplier. Next, we looked at Glamour Country, they are actually composed of a number of manufacturers across Portugal this means they would be better suited to fill our large orders than Decorpele. Another positive is they briefly discuss sourcing guidelines on their site. They source with local sepecialists and trade experts. They are also wiling to work with outsourcing buying offices and are willing to be in contact with you 24 hours a day year round. They produce shoes, leather goods, and clothing. On their site they list seven different types of leather they have experience working with. Their knowledge in working with different types of leather makes them an asset because we would be requesting them to work with vegan leather. Finally, Verdasi, which specifically manufactures leather handbags. They have been in business since 1991, which means they have plenty of experience to back their boasts of quality, innovation and modernism. They show a variety of products on their site, which shows variety in their skill set via different bag types and shapes. That skill is essential because our company is going to be manufacturing many different types of bags in varying shapes and sizes.
Italy proved much more transparent in their customer base and website details. Initially we researched Pierotucci a leather factory in Florence that began in 1972. They do everything from leather bags to gloves and belts and small leather goods; their abilities are vast. They have produced for big names such as Hugo Boss and Valentino. Since opening they have grown and continue to strive to grow and expand their business. They do everything from leather cutting to assembly. Pierotucci provides free shipping on orders over a certain dollar amount and also covers the duty to import into the US. The next manufacturer we looked at in Italy was Niccoli Bags founded in 1972. Since 2005 they have been providing the North American marketplace with their goods. This company has manufactured for brands such as Zac Posen, Diane von Fustemberg and the Worth Collection. They collaborate with many groups and nationalities to provide reliable service. They have experience working with many materials including synthetic materials and many types of leather. They focus on men and women’s bags but also manufacture wallets, beauty cases, and suitcases. They have also worked with some major Italian designers such as Armani and Prada. This manufacturer also shows the ability, in their references section, to be able to create many different silhouettes and styles. Finally, we researched I Medici who specializes in leather bags of varying types. They use vegetable tanning for all of their products. They call themselves an eco friendly company, which immediately attracts our brand as a potential customer. Unfortunately they do not provide a list of customers that would set the tone for the quality provided from them. Spain as a country seems most concerned about their natural resources and therefore leads one to believe they’re manufacturers are equally concerned. The first manufacturer is Stefano Palla’s, they manufacture bags, wallets, document holders and various leather goods. They are continuously looking to improve and expand to ensure they are producing the most luxurious leather accessories. We found this company through Everlane’s factory list on their website which means we know that they have a quality concerned customer that is also very picky about their sourcing guidelines. This makes this manufacturer a good fit for our company. The next manufacturer we researched was Betangible, they are capable of fulfilling large quantities and encourage fluent and effective communication between parties. They do not provide a list of customers however through looking at
their blog you can see they have collaborated with Sorcha O’Raghallaigh, and Pileus. They even do 3D printing, this shows they are willing to grow and expand and be more innovative. The last manufacturer we looked into for Spain was Bohah they have worked with big names such as Dior, Blanegiaga, Mulberry, and Chloe. Their site does not give a lot of information on their company and much information was found through a third party site. They specialize in manufacturing leather handbags in varying shapes and silhouettes.
-10-
FINAL STRATEGY
Portugal – Glamour Country We decided to manufacture with Glamour Country because we believe that they will be able to fulfill our quality and quantity needs. Being composed of multiple manufacturers is beneficial and allows for our company to grow and still be able to manufacture with this company. We also appreciated that they briefly discuss their sourcing guidelines on their site. Italy – Pierotucci We chose Pierotucci because they have extensive business experience and we appreciate the big names that they have manufactured for. Also being a family owned company we believe they will be more willing and able to meet our sourcing guidelines and values. Their list of customers leads us to believe they will be able to handle our quantity of goods and also that they have high quality standards. Spain – Stefano Palla’s We chose Stefano Palla’s because they manufacture for Everlane and they are a company that we look towards in terms of quality and ethical practices. If Everlane has faith in this manufacturer we are positive they are a good choice for our brand.
COUNTRIES
UNITS & COSTS
We have figured out our cost sheets (See appendix) and given our estimated costs and shipping and duty we will meet our margins. We are a luxury handbag company, which means that due to our high quality standards we can charge more per piece leading to bigger profit margins.
SUPPLIERS
As previously discussed we made sure that our manufacturers would be able to handle our quantities and meet our standards in quality. We would address the sourcing guidelines with each individual company when we began initial discussions to be sure that they would be willing and able to accommodate our needs and standards. We really appreciate that in Spain they are so concerned about conserving their natural forests and resources, which leads us to believe their manufacturers will be just as concerned with their guidelines. Each of our manufacturers has experience creating leather handbags and working with different materials and silhouettes.
-11-
We have selected the countries that best suit our company based on their abilities, their distance from our business, labor costs, and their experience in the textile industry. In Portugal textiles and apparel and footwear are two of their top industries and is one of the most important industries to the Portuguese economy. Apparel and textiles takes up about 9% of total exports and in manufacturing accounts for 20% of manufacturing employment and 8% of the manufacturing industries production. Portugal has about 6,353 textile companies and is one of the largest textile exporters in Europe making them a viable choice for our company. As previously discussed it only takes 37 days to get from Libson port in Portugal to Los Angeles, which is also beneficial for our company. Labor costs in Portugal were the lowest out of all our countries at $0.25 a minute. Italy is known for their luxury market worldwide. Italy’s textile and clothing sector accounts for 10% of the total added value of Italian manufacturing and 14.2% of jobs. They have the knowledge and ability to provide what our company is looking for. The labor cost in Italy is the highest out of our three countries at $0.33 but we believe that it is worth it to have their expertise behind our brand. Transit times are not terribly long from Italy either ranging between 41-45 days depending on the port. Spain has come back in the textile industry after the fall of the Euro in 2008 and has seen positive growth and their populations purchasing power increased from $1.514 trillion in 2013 to $1.534 trillion in 2014. Their steady increase in growth in the industry means this is a great market for our company
to enter because it will continue to get better. Labor costs in Spain were in the middle at $0.28 which is only three cents higher than Portugal. All of our countries labor costs still allow us to make our margins. The transit time from Valencia, Spain to Los Angeles is only 31 days which is our shortest transit time.

CONCLUSION
T
with meeting our values and that is Spain. We have discussed how Spain values their natural resources and forests and that makes them a great choice for us. Our other two countries also align with our values and we firmly believe they will all meet our standards in quality. We chose manufacturers that offered us added services or added knowledge whether that means knowing how to make other products or working with other textiles. All of our manufacturers also appear to promote growth and work with big brands that have grown, solidifying our belief that our manufacturers will be able to handle our future growth. We strongly believe that our final strategy maximizes benefits due to picking economies that are either stable or on their way to becoming stable and that have little political unrest. We would proudly tell our consumer where we source and would gladly make that public knowledge as a way to promote ourselves as a transparent company that values their employees, even down to the production of our goods.
-13-
o summarize the benefits of our strategy the Immoderate Man is a luxury men’s accessory brand that decided to source in Italy, Portugal, and Spain due to their labor costs, transit times, and their position in the apparel and textile industry. Each of these countries has a strong stance in the apparel and textile industry and in most of our countries apparel and textiles are one of their top exports or their top manufacturing industry. Labor costs were relatively low considering one of our first country choices was the United Kingdom. We chose countries that had reasonable labor costs per minute that would still allow us to make large profit margins. None of our transit times are over 45 days and that is a very short delivery time and while our countries do observe holiday’s they do not observe many more than the United States. Our choices make sense because we want to source in countries that we know are going to be able to support our business and each of our country choices are on the upside of economic troubles. One country stands out in particular
