A GROUP of friends from South London completed an By HAYLEY RICHARDSON emotionally-charged physical challenge to send out the More than 40 people competed in message that no one should the special event last month, which has so far raised £6,000 for Macmillan face cancer alone.

The Joy’s Boys event was organised by Jamie Doubleday to show support for his mum, Joy, 57, who is battling a brain tumour. The team completed a challenging 90-mile cycle from Windsor Castle in Berkshire to Tolldown Farm, Jamie’s family home, on the outskirts of Bath. They then camped overnight and ran in the Bristol Half Marathon the following morning. Jamie, 26, of Littleton Street, Earlsfield, said: “The objective of Joy’s Boys was to spread awareness of the disease that Mum was diagnosed with.”

Cancer Support – far exceeding their initial target of £1,000. Jamie’s dad John, 57, completed the cycle and his sister Laura, who works as a teacher in Dubai, flew home to join the team.

Jamie explained that the idea was to ask four close friends to take part, who would in turn invite another four friends, and so on. “This meant the Macmillan message and the services they provide to people suffering with cancer would be spread to a wider group,” he said. farm, Jamie hired two 10-man tents and a luxury portable shower unit. He explained: “We were a bit worried that we’d run out of water in the house, so I brought in reinforcements.” Jamie was overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm people have shown for the Joy’s Boys event. “It makes me feel very fortunate for the group of friends I have,” Jamie admitted. “It means a lot that they’re willing to put themselves through these tough endurance events to support my mum.” He added: “We’ve raised a staggering amount of money which is a sign of how hard everyone has worked to raise funds for their efforts.” ● To donate to the team, visit: www.virginmoneygiving.com/joys boys
