A FUNDRAISER at a South London leisure centre raised nearly £200 for a leading children’s charity. Staff at Sidcup Leisure Centre in Hurst Road sold teas, coffees and cakes and held a raffle in aid of the company’s chosen charity, Together for Short Lives. The sale was organised by receptionist Justine Hart and duty manager Leanne Wye, with many members of staff bringing in their homebaked efforts.

FISHY encounters, freshly baked bread and a taste of the North Pole were served up to Sidcup youngsters when they took part in a “Farm to Fork” trail. Children from Baldwyn’s Park Beavers visited the Sidcup Tesco in Edgington Way as part of the supermarket chain’s Eat Happy Project, which aims to educate children about where food comes from. They learnt about the different types of fish at the seafood counter, were taught about the baking process and experienced the extreme temperatures in the freezer aisles, where the coldest part matches the North Pole at -20C. Baldwyn’s Park Beaver leader Penny Atkins, 44, said: “They loved the fact that they got to hold the fish, especially as they were all used to their mums saying ‘don’t touch!’ ” She said the visit encouraged them to take a more active interest in what they put in their mouths and will help them when working towards their healthy eating badges.

Centre manager Lee Clark said: “The customers loved it, even though they had to burn off a few more calories!” Lucky raffle winners received a free annual saver card, a complimentary family swim and a T-shirt. Together for Short Lives helps the estimated 49,000 young people in the UK who suffer with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and offers practical and emotional support to families.
