Balham-born Tony Bradman visited Ashmead School in Deptford to talk about a collection of First World War stories by famous children’s authors which he has put together and edited. He led a special morning Remembrance assembly for the older children and held afternoon sessions about the war and creative writing. “It was really memorable,” said deputy headteacher Jane Bickley. “He was really great with them and it really lifted them and inspired them.” She said the sessions encouraged the children to believe if they practice hard enough, they too could make a career out of writing. Tony’s award-winning repertoire spans a range of age-groups and includes the Dilly the Dinosaur and Tommy Niner series. Tony said: “I really enjoyed my visit to Ashmead School – the kids are very
atmosphere. “I stood with them in the playground at 11am during the minute’s silence and felt very moved.” The schoolchildren treated Tony to a tour of their poppy installation – their homage to the display at the Tower of London. Tony’s anthology, called Stories of World War One, features work from 12 writers including South London resident Malorie Blackman.
