BARTENDER’S TOOL KIT Muddler Some cocktails need a little extra flavor. A muddler is used to crush ingredients within the cocktail to add that unique taste.
Jigger Accuracy is important when creating a cocktail. A jigger is used to measure out liquids for each cocktail.
Shaker
Shaken or stirred? A shaker is used (along with ice) to mix the ingredients of a cocktail and quickly chill it before serving.
Bar Spoon What if you want it stirred? A bar-spoon is used to mix and layer
ingredients within a cocktail by pouring the ingredients over the spoon into the glass.
Strainer Cocktails are pulp free (for the most part). A strainer is used to clear bits of ingredients out of the cocktail that are not a liquid.

GLASSWARE
Martini
This glass is for drinks without ice (chilled drinks). This glass is also known as a “Cocktail Glass.”
Snifter
Old Fashioned
This glass is used for drinks “on the rocks”. This glass is also known as a “Rocks Glass.”
This glass has a short stem so you can place your middle and ring finger around it.
Flute
The flute shape helps preserve the carbonation of the champagne.
Irish Coffee Mug
The Irish Coffee Mug is used for hot cocktails
Shot
This is a small and thick glass. It is also used as a measuring tool.
Highball
This is the most common glass at bars. It is used to make many mixed drinks.
ICE Cubed Ice cubes are good for almost all mixing: for shaking, stirring and drinks on the rocks. The larger the ice cube, the slower it melts and causes less dilution. It is customary to fill a glass or shaker 2/3 full for best results.
Cracked Smaller than ice cubes, cracked ice melts faster and adds more water
to drinks. Usually this is used when making frozen drinks because cubes can clog the blender’s blade. 2/3 to one cup of cracked ice is perfect for a single frozen Daiquiri or Margarita. Typically bagged ice from the store is cracked.
Crushed Crushed or shaved ice is a very fine ice that can be used in a shaker to produce a thick, slurry of a cocktail.

SIMPLE SYRUP Some cold cocktails and fruit drinks use simple syrup as a basis to sweeten an otherwise bitter beverage. The result of this recipe is a syrup that is thinner than a commercial rich syrup.
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
In a small saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Simmer until the sugar is dissolved (about 3 minutes). Remove from the heat and let cool completely. MAKE AHEAD The syrup can be refrigerated in a glass jar for up to 1 month.
