GRADUATION 2017
Hays High School Valedictorian
KURT JOHNSON
Age: 18 Parents: Richard Johnson, Sandra Johnson Siblings: Reid Johnson (20), Bret John (16)
Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? Brody Smith (trickshot legend), Stephen Colbert, and Jerry Seinfeld, because we could have a hilarious meal with a bunch of jokes and try to make trick shots with our food.
both in the classroom and in the field as my cross country coach. She is such a kind, caring person who is genuinely invested and involved in the lives of her students. She not only taught me how to be a better runner, but a better person as well.
Favorite historical figure – and why? While there are many astounding historical figures who have accomplished impressive feats, I’m going to have to go with Jesse Owens. He had to overcome many obstacles in order to run and be successful in the Olympics. As a runner, I find his story motivational.
What’ll you miss most about school? I will miss the friends I have made through my various activities in high school. Each of them has played an important role in my life and makes me smile every day. Leaving them is the part of the college transition that will be most painful.
Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? Coach Hightower because she has taught me
What’ll you miss least about school? Definitely the pointless busywork that gets assigned as homework.
Hays High School Salutatorian
HAILEY WILLIAMS
Age: 18 Parents: Suzanne Rogers Williams and Aaron Thell Williams Siblings: Aaron Williams - 16 (Sophomore at Hays); Luke Williams - 12 (7th grade at Dahlstrom); Jackson Williams 10 (4th grade at Elm Grove)
Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? Jane Austen—I love her novels, so I would want to ask her about her writing and her lifestyle in England. Taylor Swift—I’d like to tell her how much I loved her concerts, and I think she would be very entertaining to talk to at a dinner. Albert Einstein—I’d want a glimpse into the madness behind his intelligence.
Favorite historical figure – and why? George Washington. It was fascinating to study him and the Revolutionary War in U.S. history, and I have heard incredible stories about the leader that contributed to the miraculous defeat of the British.
Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? Ms. Gleason was my third grade teacher, and she gave me the compassion and support that I needed as a new student in the district. She really cared about all of her students, and she supported me outside of school by going to my piano recital. I’ll always remember her kindness and the fun that I had in her class. What’ll you miss most about school? I am going to miss spending time with my friends during the school day and just laughing with them about the most random things. I have so many good memories with them over the past four years. What’ll you miss least about school? I will not miss having seven classes in a row and then lots of homework after school!
What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I am going to the University of Texas at San Antonio as a Top Scholar. I plan on studying mechanical engineering, and after that we’ll just see where life takes me. What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? The recent election cycle, as this was the first election in which I could vote, impacted me. The floods in our area in recent years have also had a large impact, as I have had good friends who have lost their homes because of these. The release of Star Wars Episode 7 was an event important for me as well, because the Star War movies are the best.
What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I will be attending Brigham Young University in the fall. I am still deciding on a major, and it could be anything from neuroscience to creative writing to mathematics. What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? The election and campaign coverage had a big impact on me because I was able to vote. I was very excited about the detection of gravitational waves my junior year because it gave a greater clue into the existence of black holes. The 2014 Winter Olympic coverage was really interesting because of all the events that I watched with my family and the associated political stories that I studied in school.
How would you change the United States today? I would get rid of the divisiveness. Our country is currently very divided, and there is little compromise going on. If I could change one thing, I would eliminate this and have people work together to obtain solutions that everyone can live with. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Enjoy senior year. It seems like it will last an eternity yet it goes by so fast. While getting work done and staying on top of school is important, make sure to take some time to do fun activities with the people you love.
How would you change the United States today? I would create more peace and unity between the citizens in this country, and I would try to lessen the bitterness between the two political parties. I would spread a greater focus on disagreeing with respect and dignity. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Hard work pays off, so don’t give up yet, and take your last year to meet more people! What’s your dream car? I don’t really have a dream car, but if I had to pick one it would be a Tesla. What is one class will you never forget? AP Literature and
What’s your dream car? Probably a Chevy Camaro. What one class will you never forget? Coach Null’s AP Chemistry class last year. It was such an entertaining, interesting, and well-taught class, and we all bonded over this challenging subject. After Coach Null passed away, we held up each other. I know that these people will forever be there for me. If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? I would visit Australia so I could both explore the natural world found there and get some surfing in.
Composition with Mr. Gardner has been my favorite class. Mr. Gardner taught us life lessons through literature, and he always kept us entertained with stories. He made his students feel capable of doing hard things, and he challenged us so that we progressed throughout the year. I will never forget the class, or the teacher, where I learned a lot, laughed, and gained a greater perspective of the world through literature. If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? I would travel to London or anywhere in the English countryside. I love the history and literature that came out of England, so I would want to return to the country where some of my favorite books take place.

GRADUATION 2017
Lehman High Valedictorian
LANDRY ROHDE
Age: 18 Hometown: Kyle Parents: Bonnie and Rodney Rohde Siblings: Haley Rohde, 20 Who are the three people you’d like to have dinner with and why? If I could have any three people to dinner, then I would choose to invite Tim Duncan, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela. Being a lifelong Spurs fan, I watched Tim Duncan play for my entire life with the exception of this year. Basketball skills aside, what always impressed me most about Duncan was the manner with which he carried himself. He has never been egotistical. Instead, he chooses to let his actions speak for himself and is willing to make personal sacrifices in the interest of others around him. This quality is one which I have attempted to emulate in my own life as I have grown. Gandhi and Mandela both displayed an amazing degree of integrity and understanding in their respective roles as human rights activists. What each of those great individuals achieved in life goes beyond words. Favorite historical figure and why? My favorite historical figure would have to be X from the Roman Numeration System. It represents my favorite number in half as many characters (dang those Romans were efficient).
Favorite teacher from any grade and why? This question for me is one that is impossible to answer. I have received mentoring and assistance from so many teachers throughout my life that I would never be able to narrow a list down to even five individuals, much less one. From coaches and band directors to classroom teachers, a great number of people have influenced me to be the person that I am today, and no accomplishment of mine could have ever of been achieved without them. What will you miss most about school? More than anything, I will miss the people. Playing card games at the lunch table with friends, having conversations with teachers after class, attending school events as a group; these are the things that I will remember the most and carry with me. In twenty years it won’t matter to me that I overslept and missed my AP test for Calculus (sorry Mr. Thornton). However, I will remember friends, counselors, and teachers (such as Mr. Thornton) trying to contact me in the hour before the test while I slept like a rock in bed because they were truly worried about where I was and if I was ok. What will you miss least about school? The food What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I will be attending Trinity University in San Antonio for the fall semester of 2017. I plan on double majoring in areas associated with business and attempting to graduate with a Master’s degree in five years. I would love to take advantage of the opportunity they offer at Trinity to be an intern with the front office of the San Antonio Spurs. Additionally, I will look to become as involved as possible in the community through service and volunteer work. What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? The three news stories,
Lehman High Salutatorian What will you miss least about school? The 20 minute drive there every morning. Or maybe the student parking lot. Close call.
occurring in the past four years, with the largest impact on me include the Women’s March of 2017, the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling, and the temporary closing of Blue Bell Ice Cream. How would you change the United States today? In today’s society, it is evident that much ideological polarity exists among groups of varying interests. This pattern may perhaps be somewhat attributed to the increased use of impersonal social media platforms. If I were to change one feature of the United States today, then I would choose to promote a greater sense of understanding between individuals. This change would serve as the foundation for improved communication, potentially leading to more compromise. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Perform to the best of your abilities in class, but never let your grades consume or dictate your entire life. Take note of the small things that occur around you every day. Most importantly, be a good person to the others around you. Forgive people, begin conversations, and never forget to laugh. What’s your dream car? A Delorean dmc-12 containing a flux capacitor mod (this car is timeless). What one class will you never forget? One class which I will never forget will be my tennis class. I joined the tennis class during my third year of high school and it was one class that I could look forward to every day. It was an incredible experience to compete alongside friends as we represented our school at tournaments and matches. If you travel anywhere today, where would it be? Not Oklahoma
What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I’m leaving as soon as possible to my college, Sarah Lawrence College, and pursuing degrees in Anthropology.
MADELINE SHARON MUNGO Age: 17 Parents: Brigitte Kathryn Bellini and Samuel James Mungo Siblings: Alexander Francis Mungo
Who are the three people you’d like to have dinner with and why? I would invite Barack Obama, Bob Ross and Marsha P. Johnson. I think that would be the coolest conversation. Favorite historical figure and why? Sappho, as she was her own woman long before it was socially acceptable to be so. Favorite teacher from any grade and why? My sophomore year history teacher, Mr. Fergus has had a huge impact on me and continues to expand my mind. What will you miss most about school? The friends that I’ve made these past 12 years.
What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? Legalization of gay marriage. Death of Robin Williams. New photos of Pluto. How would you change the United States today? I would encourage more tolerance in our differences and maybe have less straight white men in power. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t spend the entire year hating every moment. A lot of good things happen senior year. What’s your dream car? A smart car, or maybe one of those electric Teslas. What one class will you never forget? AP Wolrd History. It completely altered my world view. If you travel anywhere today, where would it be? Honestly, I would go back to New York City. I left a piece of me up there.

Principal’s Message Live Oak Academy
It’s been an honor
Live Oak Academy Senior Class of 2017, This has been a fantastic year and each of you have been wonderful. This year has been particularly special as you have helped shape the culture of Live Oak Academy as a place that is truly a destination for students who are looking for an alternative option to graduate. You made it and are a part of the largest graduating class in the history of Live Oak Academy. Although we have grown, each of you have contributed to keeping the feel of Live Oak Academy small and tight knit, much like family. It has been an honor to get to know each one of you and serve as your principal. I am extremely excited for you and send my best wishes to you. I want to extend my congratulations along with the entire faculty and staff of Live Oak Academy on your achievements. We are very proud of you! I hope the time you spent, whether for a short or long period, at Live Oak Academy was enjoyable and memorable as you gained knowledge and skills you will need for your future life and career. In addition, I send my warm wishes to all those who have encouraged and supported your education, confident they, too, will enjoy this special occasion. Stay Undefeated! Michael Watson, Ed.D.
