8 GRADUATION 2018
Hays High School Valedictorian
GEORGIA BLUE CARDOSA Age: 18 Parents: Coby Cardosa and Dawn Hurley Siblings: Cash Cooper Cardosa, 13
Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? My mother’s older brother, Brad, because he passed before I had the chance to meet him. Stephen Hawking because I believe he is one of the brightest people our world has yet seen, and he has an incredible sense of humor. Michelle Obama because she’s witnessed a historic presidential term from the inside. I would love to hear her input on her husband’s presidency as well as how she feels about the future of the United States’ Government. Favorite historical figure – and why? Eleanor Roosevelt has always been one my favorites because I admire the drastic change she was able to make to the role of the First Lady of the United States, and we also share a birthday.
Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? My favorite teacher would definitely have to be Mr. Spiller. I’ve gotten to be a student in his class for two years now and have enjoyed (almost) every minute of it. He knows how to integrate humor into his lessons while still managing to teach me more than any other teacher I’ve had, and I really appreciate that. What’ll you miss most about school? I’ll miss the people who’ve helped me learn new things everyday and smile through the difficult days. What’ll you miss least about school? I will not miss the ridiculous amount of structure that we’ve had to succumb to.
What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? This summer I mainly plan on working and saving up for future endeavors, and this fall I will be attending the University of Southern California as a Mathematics Major. What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? Larry Nasser’s Trial The 2016 election results. Malaysian Airlines Flight Disappearance How would you change the United States today? I would like to totally reform the education system. I believe that the state guidelines and general societal norms put in place have made it difficult for real learning to occur in the classroom. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Illegitimi non carborundum
What’s your dream car? Probably a Tesla Model X. I love that it’s an electric SUV. Good for the environment and still has all of the amenities I prefer. What one class will you never forget? I will never forget the Calculus BC class that I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of this year. With only ten students we’ve enjoyed the benefits of being able to properly integrate fun and work. We have all been able to teach and learn from each other with the help of our incredibly detail-oriented teacher, Mr. Spiller. If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? I would want to visit anywhere in Spain because it’s where I believe my hispanic blood comes from. Overall it seems like a beautiful, culturally diverse, and accepting place.
Hays High School Salutatorian Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? My three younger brothers. They’re a lot of fun, even if they’re a little crazy sometimes! Favorite historical figure – and why? I have a lot of respect for Joseph Smith. He stayed humble and positive through a lot of crazy hard things, and he always tried to do what was right.
ALAYNA BEDWELL
Age: 17 Parents: LaNan Denae Bedwell and Devin John Bedwell Siblings: Dallin, age 16; Rhett, age 12; Ty, age 9
Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? I can’t just pick one! My favorites are Mr. Loy, Coach Holcomb, Mr. Flores, and Mr. Nash. They all made their classes really engaging, and I have a lot of respect for them.
What’ll you miss most about school? I’ll miss seeing my close friends every day. What’ll you miss least about school? I definitely won’t miss having to wake up early. What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? This summer I’m heading out to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I’ll be majoring in chemical engineering. What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? I would say the recent presidential election, the Parkland shooting, and the Paris attacks in 2015.
How would you change the United States today? If I had it my way, people (including me) would use social media and the internet less and interact with people face-to-face more often. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Just do your best and work hard! What’s your dream car? I think I’d be happy driving a truck, but I’m not too picky. What one class will you never forget? AP Music Theory. That was a really interesting class, and there were only nine people in it so we all got to know each other.
If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? My mom and I have always wanted to visit Ireland.

14 GRADUATION 2018
Lehman High Valedictorian
Lehman High Salutatorian
What’ll you miss least about school? Having to attend all 7 classes every day.
What’s up for you (summer and beyond)? This summer I’ll be working at Lion’s Club Tube Rental in San Marcos, and then I’ll be attending Trinity University in the fall.
What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? UT Austin and Plan II. I want to learn and help people. Hopefully, I can work for the government and help others in the near future.
BREANNA DELEON
Age: 18 Parents: Lilia Perez, Joel DeLeon Siblings: Joel Jacob DeLeon, 16; Cassandra DeLeon, 15; Halie DeLeon, 13 Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? Former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton because I am interested in politics and they inspire me. Also, Beyoncé. She is a strong, talented, and amazing woman. Favorite Historical Figure – and why? Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a wonderful leader who could speak for all. He persevered and fought for justice. He died trying to help people and was never afraid to dream. Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? I can’t pick one. Every teacher has influenced me or made an impact on me in their own ways. What’ll you miss most about school? My teachers and the staff at Lehman They are all wonderful, intelligent, and hardworking people who truly cheer on the students and their parents.
What three things in the news over the past four years have had the biggest impact on you? The 2016 election; President Obama’s farewell speech; Hillary Clinton becoming the first female Presidential nominee for a major political party. How would you change the United States today? I would make Americans slow down and sit with each other to just talk. I think Americans need to talk to people and get to know each other to be more understanding. If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? Try to do as many college applications/essays/scholarships as you can during the summer before you get overwhelmed during the school year. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. What’s your dream car? Tesla Model S What one class will you never forget? My AP World History class with Mr. Ferguson If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? Spain – I really need to work on my Spanish, great food, great culture, and amazing architecture.
What three things in the news over the past for years have had the biggest impact on you? The mass shootings and school shootings have really hit too close to home. The Ebola outbreak was pretty significant freshman year since we were reading a book about it. The 2016 presidential elections were also a really big deal.
RAYNA WEBB
Age: 18 Parents: Ronna Harrison & David Webb Siblings: Kyle Conyers, 29; Maddy Kemper, 19
How would you change the United States today? I think mental health and body image are important issues. I would change the unrealistic beauty standards set for all people and teach especially young women how to be content with their appearance.
Who are three people you’d like to have to dinner – and why? Lin Manuel Miranda, so I can sing all of Hamilton the musical to him … Brendon Irie from Panic! at the Disco, just because he’s beautiful … J.K. Rowling, because I have a lot of Harry Potter theories I need to relate to her …
If you could give next year’s graduating class a piece of advice, what would it be? I would tell them that the rank does not matter as much as everyone says. Do not ruin yourself in the process of earning a high GPA; grades should not be the only factor that defines you or your high school experience.
Favorite historical figure – and why? My favorite historical figure is Alexander Hamilton; he made such a colossal mess with his affair, but was able to publicly admit his own wrongdoings and redeem himself.
What’s your dream car? My own truck is already a dream. It’s conveniently small, but it has a back seat and a 6-CD player. How could I want for more?
Favorite teacher from any grade – and why? My 11th-Grade AP English, Ms. Guinn, is the best teacher I’ve ever had. She’s always gone out of her way to encourage me and make sure I’m ok. What’ll you miss most about school? I will miss the friendships I’ve formed with all of my teachers. So many of them have pushed me to be the best person I can be, and I cannot thank them more.
What’s one class you will never forget? I’ll never forget AP Biology with Ms. Gay. That class made me love Science again and has definitely influenced my career choices. If you could travel anywhere today, where would it be? I’ve always wanted to travel to Jerusalem. Although I’m aware that this precise moment is a little too risky to tour there, the religious history of Jerusalem has always fascinated me.
