When they turn their tassels and toss their hats at Strahan Coliseum June 7, Hays CISD’s Class of 2019 will officially etch their names into the history books. Those 1,000-plus students, one of the largest crops of graduating seniors in Hays CISD history, will become the 50th graduating class in a district that’s handed out thousands of diplomas to numerous students over the years. For alumni who were part of Hays CISD’s inaugural graduating class in spring 1969, seeing what has become of their community is nothing short of astounding. That’s all due to the fact that forming what is now Hays CISD meant working together amicably, no matter where they had come from or their personal backgrounds. That was a tall task to consider for many Kyle and Buda area students who entered their senior year in fall 1968. Several months prior, officials with the Buda and Kyle Independent School Dis-
tricts opted to consolidate, which also meant bringing students at Buda and Kyle high schools, two fierce and bitter rivals, under one roof. It wasn’t exactly a popular decision among the student body. “We were very disappointed that we weren’t going to graduate as a Kyle Panther or a Buda Bulldog,” said longtime resident and 1969 Hays High alumna Kyle Nations. “We had been there three years and in our senior year, we discovered we’re going to be something else.” Adding to student skepticism was the lack of a mascot and, above all else, an actual campus for the new district’s flagship high school. The Hays CISD Class of 1969 held classes at what was Kyle High, now Kyle Elementary. What is now Hays High wasn’t completed until 1969. Through it all, students who made up that inaugural Hays CISD class came together and ironed out all of their differences. That included settling on the school colors, mascot, fight song and more for what became Hays High.

That also meant coming together and working with the educators who also were adjusting to life within Hays CISD. Life in Buda and Kyle was also much different compared to today. Back then, both towns had fewer than 1,000 people and were both dominated by wide open ranch and farm land. Today, Buda and Kyle combined have an estimated population of more than 60,000 people and counting. Despite the rapid growth, David Dabelgott, a member of the Hays High Class of 1969, said many of the 63 inaugural Hays CISD graduates try to keep in

touch with one another and try to help each other out in any way they can, even though many of those who graduated moved out of the area. All who walked the stage that year understood their place in history and the significance of the moment – that they were the very first class to graduate under the Hays CISD banner. “It doesn’t matter. If anyone from that class called me and asked if they needed something, I’d be there,” Dabelgott said. For a full story on the inaugural Hays CISD graduating class, check out a copy of the June 5 Hays Free Press.

Principal’s Message Lehman High School
Carry your Lobo integrity, wisdom and pride with you everywhere Dear Class of 2019, Congratulations on achieving this milestone in your life. I cannot thank you enough for the leadership and resilience that you have demonstrated over the last four years. Our school and school district have undergone a great deal of change from adding new schools to expanding new roads, but YOU did not let change keep you from achieving Excellence as One. You have not only continued a Lobo Legacy of success, but you have also raised the bar to define a new “Lehman Way” and you have redefined what it means to be a LOBO. As you begin this next chapter of your own story, I encourage you to move through life with the same resilience that has carried you through high school. Remember that excellence is a habit; grit is a high yield life strategy and no matter what challenges or changes you might face, every day is a gift that encases another opportunity to get better. Be kind. Love hard. Work hard. Play hard and go out and make the world a better place! We will always be a place that you can call home and will stand to support you in any way possible. Thank you for the four years that you have given Lehman High School and for your partnership with faculty, staff and administration. Now, go out and make EVERYDAY a GREAT DAY to be a LOBO ALUMNI! 10 GRADUATION 2019
Lehman High Valedictorian How have you seen school change since your freshman year? My personal perception of school has changed throughout my years at Lehman High School for the better. Initially, I saw school as a place to slingshot to the next arena, college, without taking any consideration of the process. However, I understand now that it was a place to learn and enjoy peculiar and pleasurable experiences that may only happen once in my life.
from my family.
Why did you choose your post-high school path, be it college or elsewhere? I chose the University of Texas at Austin for several reasons. Firstly, it offers a respectable medical school, Dell, and provides a major in Neuroscience. Secondly, The campus itself is unable to contain its beautiful diverse nature that includes cultures and interests. But most importantly, it is a reasonable distance
What do you plan to do after college? I was inspired to pursue Pediatric Neurosurgery due to my growing compassion towards individuals who suffer from neurological damage. This compassion was possible through my family upbringing specifically through my older brother, Eric. My brother has neurological damage stemming from cerebral palsy and it is from his life and experiences that my
What was your greatest accomplishment that was not based in academics? I spent two years of my life developing a work ethic for powerlifting. ambition towards helping others and myself remains ever lit. What makes you, you? I’m a first generation student, I’m Okinawan, and I have a hearing disability. When I started school, I was misidentified with my disability. With this misidentification, I was placed in a special education program which naturally made me feel uncertain about myself and shy towards others. During the 7th grade, however, I decided that I wasn’t going to let this disability stop me from excelling in school. Hence, I communicated my request of leaving the special education program to the school administration, Chapa Middle School, then once passing a placement test they found that I no longer needed the services for which the program provided. In this process not only did I develop the skills to read lips and body language, or acquire hearing aid devices to facilitate my ability to hear, but I was also put under certain circumstances that’d ultimately allow me to forge a character that’s rooted in diligence and perseverance; it is with this character that I’ve prevailed in spite of my circumstances.

Lehman High Salutatorian How have you seen school change since your freshman year? School hasn’t necessarily changed as much as my perception of it since my freshman year. Honestly, I emphasized the importance of doing well academically as a freshman and pursued grades over passions and true interests. However, as I grew older, I realized that while school is important, it’s not entirely more important than having something that you truly care about. For me, I realized that I loved the environment, so I decided to take classes, volunteer, and intern in that field.
I chose to pursue a college education because I believe that the resources provided by college, beyond just education, can empower me to fulfill my potential as an individual.
After college, I plan to either work for an NGO such as Greenpeace, Green Cross International, and Conservation International, or pursue a career as a civil rights lawyer and attend law school. I really want to address environmental degradation and climate change through social causes.
What makes you, you? Oddly, I think what has come to define me my entire life is my hair.
