Buda man arrested after ramming police vehicle BY SAMANTHA SMITH
news@haysfreepress.com
A Buda man was arrested Friday after authorities claim he rammed into the side of an off-duty Austin Police officer’s vehicle on Interstate 35 near the Robert S. Light overpass. Authorities arrested Christopher Marcus
Williams, 28, of Buda, who was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, which is a first-degree felony. Bond has not been set for Williams at this time, according to Hays County Jail records. Friday’s incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when Austin Police officer
Lando Hall, who was returning home to Buda, observed Williams traveling eastbound on FM 967 WILLIAMS and driving recklessly, according to a Buda press release. Hall activated his lights and
sirens, turning around to pursue Williams and pull him over. Hall lost sight of Williams’ vehicle at the FM 967 and Main Street intersection. He later spotted Williams getting on southbound I-35 at the 220 entrance ramp in Buda. According to the release, Williams rammed the side of Hall’s vehicle, which was marked according
to an arrest affidavit, on southbound I-35 near the Robert S. Light overpass. The collision caused Hall’s vehicle to crash into the center divider. Hall observed that Williams continued driving across the median and crashed on the access road of I-35. Hall was uninjured in the accident, but Williams was sent to Brackenridge
Hospital. According to the arrest affidavit, Williams told an officer he “made a mistake” by striking the APD unit with his vehicle. Williams also told an officer he did not stop and lost control of his vehicle before crashing into a guardrail. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Hays County appraisals were sent to residents earlier this month and one resident is using his knowledge to help others file their protests before the July 6 deadline. Bill Loeb, who was previously an Austin resident, has moved himself and his real estate company to Dripping Springs. Aside from being a realtor, Loeb’s second “job” is helping residents protest their property appraisals. Loeb said he refuses to take a profit from it, as the job is his way of giving back to his community. Loeb said he’s been helping others file appeals for at least seven years, previously helping Travis County residents and now assisting residents in both Hays and Travis counties. “I hate what the counties are doing, jacking up the assessments in order to get money,” Loeb said. Loeb said he began helping people years ago when he realized there was a common frustration regarding people’s property assessments. “Most people don’t know how to do it (file a protest), what information to bring and they think it’s going to be harder than it is,” Loeb said. “They also feel the deck is against them, and it is, but that’s why I want to help.” Many of Loeb’s “clients” come from word of mouth, and Facebook groups. Hays County resident Joe Roldan has never met Loeb in person, but connected via Facebook this year to help with his appraisal protest process. “Bill is a very nice person who likes to help people solve problems,” Roldan said. “The process of disputing appraisal values is best approached with a structured approach, like Bill showed

Roldan is currently in the midst of the protest process and does not know yet if he will be successful. “I’ve probably talked to all of them,” Loeb said. “My phone rings all day everyday during this time frame, but I love it and I love helping people.” Through Facebook, Loeb has been able to get in contact with many residents in need of assistance. After several people ask for help, Loeb sets up a time and a place to hold seminars. Flores Restaurant in Dripping Springs

Construction bids now Sheriff ’s being taken for SH 45 SW Report BY SAMANTHA SMITH
KYLE
news@haysfreepress.com
Preliminary steps toward moving forward with a project that would connect FM 1626 in Hays County to MoPac in Austin occurred last week as the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) is now seeking bids for construction of State Highway 45 southwest (SH 45 SW). Hays County Pct. 2 Commissioner Mark Jones said the proposed regional connector between Hays County and Travis County has been needed for a long time. “The roadway is too congested. Eighty to 90 percent of Buda residents commute to Austin daily,” Jones said. SH 45 SW, which is a proposed 4-lane divided regional connector from 1626 to Mopac, is destined to be a toll road to pay off the loan for its construction. According to a December 2015 KXAN report, the funding for the connection came from a mixture of grant and loan funding. Once CTRMA awards the bid for the project to a contractor, construction could begin before the end of the year. “If everything goes right, they’re expecting to begin construction in October of 2016,” said Jones. Critics of the project, such as the Save Our Springs Alliance, have argued that the need to protect the environment in the area, namely the Edwards Aquifer, outweighs the need to relieve traffic congestion. The estimated cost of the toll road for commuters has yet to be determined as it hinges on the final construction costs of the road. Jones estimates tolls to cost between 75 to 99 cents.

SH 45 SW, which is a proposed 4-lane divided regional connector from 1626 to Mopac, is destined to be a toll road to pay off the loan for its construction. Jones also says that CTRMA is responsible for setting the costs of using the toll road. He added they traditionally offer “free ride” deals as incentive for commuters to start using new toll ways. Jones said he is optimistic about commuters’ use of the new connector. “That road is going to be heavily used,” said Jones. According to the Hays County website, the city of Austin along with ten neighboring cities, were designated by the U.S. Census bureau as the “Austin Urbanized Area” in 2010, which is home to 1.36 million people. Of those 1.36 million, 800,000 live in Austin with the remaining 42 percent living in the ten adjacent
cities. According to Hays County, the county’s population grew 60 percent between 2000 and 2010, resulting in more congestion on roadways. Jones said not building the connector is adding at least 15 to 20 minutes onto people’s commute. In a KXAN report, Hays County Pct. 3 Commissioner Will Conley said environmental precautions are being taken to address runoff from the road. With the advanced environmental safeguards being used, Jones anticipates the regional connector will meet the transportation needs of Hays County residents without greatly expanding the counties carbon footprint.

Do they offer journalism degrees?
I
’m a bit confused about that college that Donald Trump built. They call it Trump University, but I’m not too sure where its campus is situated. I am somewhat a fanatic when it comes to college athletics. Well, at least football and March Madness basketball. And I have a good knowledge where most campuses are located, at least which state they’re in. But it seems Trump U flitters around the country like a band of gypsies. At one time Trump University showed up in Texas, probably hoping to join the Big 12, but we can only have one TU ’round these parts. So Dean Donald and his school got the boot from the Lone Star State. Just how big is this here Trump University? And does it have a football team? Last fall, I watched a lot of small schools play ball since certain Texas college teams sucked worse than a turbo-charged Hoover vacuum. Not once did I see Trump U play Louisiana Tech or Appalachian State. What conference is Trump U in? Definitely not the Big 12 or the Southland Conference. They play too close to Mexico for Trump to attend a game. And if Trump U does have athletics, what is its mascot? With Trump’s infatuation over big walls, I wonder if his school’s athletes are the Mighty Masons, or perhaps the Burly Bricklayers. Marshall has the Thundering Herd. Trump U could have the Toxic Cloud as its team nickname. ‘Bama is the Crimson Tide, so Trump University could be the Orange Orator. How about the Blabbering Buffoons with the mascot dressed in an expensive business suit and having an overinflated head beneath a tacky red gimme cap? Whatever the team is called, I bet all the players will argue with the referees and be poor sports. I foresee lots of unsportsmanlike conduct and several targeting calls in

the football games, and I predict the entire TU basketball squad will foul out of the game before halftime. Heck, the trainer will probably get a couple of technical fouls before the game is over. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit to see the NCAA investigate Trump U for some recruiting violation or other infraction. Just what would your typical student athlete study at Trump University? Oh, I’m sure there are business classes, but I doubt they offer Political Science or Ethics. Journalism isn’t offered, but I hear there’s a class on fiction writing, and I am unclear if TU even has Liberal Arts. I bet there is a school of engineering with an emphasis on wall construction. Freshman courses would include Racism 101 and Tax Evasion. And for those nonathletes, they will be encouraged to join the debate club and learn the fine art of dodging the questions and skirting the issue. For all you recent high school graduates, I will start searching for more information on this fine school of higher learning, like the tuition and acceptance requirements. I doubt Trump would care much about your SAT score, but if you are of Mexican decent, a Muslim, or an opinionated female, then I would recommend looking at a different school. You know, no matter what you want to study, I’d steer clear of Trump University, unless you want a career in the circus. Then this clown’s college is the place for you. Clint Younts went to the University of Tennessee and then hits the trail to Texas. He hasn’t left since, so he probably won’t be going to graduate school at Trump U. crowsnest78610@ yahoo.com

Cousin Dooley and his sleek, black 1950 Mercury P
erhaps junior high age boys aren’t as gullible and impressionable as they were when I was that age. In my hometown, one campus served both the high school and the junior high, grades 7-12, with 210 students total. If you wanted to be the Big Man on Campus (BMOC), you either had a really long wait or it was never. The latter was the norm. I was in my first year on that campus, located on Main Street that also doubled as U.S. Highway 84. During that year, I had a big boost in my status (at times, at least) since my cousin Dooley lived in a rooming house cat-a-corner from the campus. Dooley had returned from military service, had gone to work for the railroad and had bought himself a brand new black 1950 Mercury 2-door. When he was off the job, he’d cruise around the campus and “drag Main” in that sleek Merc. And, if I was lucky, I got to ride with him and improve my social standing, particularly with the girls, or so it seemed. In 7th grade, a

giggle from your “favorite girl,” elicited a major case of puffy chest. And, if you could wave at ‘em from the window of that “cool” car, well they looked at you as if you were King Kong or at least that’s how it felt. At that time, most people in my hometown picked out a service station where they did all of their car fueling, maintenance and detailing. Dooley traded at a Humble (now Exxon) downtown. A young, slender man for whom I only knew a nickname — Pencil, which he’d been given for obvious reasons — always waited on Dooley. He took a liking to Pencil and made sure he was manning the pumps when the black Merc went in for gas, oil or lube. Dooley often drove in, asked Pencil to get in the car and took him for a ride. On one such occasion, 13-year-old me was riding with Dooley and he got a wild notion. I
only had two tips: “Willis, get in the back seat,” and “Pencil, you sit up here and help me watch for things.” Since Dooley was “the cat’s meow” (today’s interpretation would be “way cool”), neither of us questioned him. He instructed Pencil: “Watch the gauges for me, especially the speedometer and be on the lookout for the Highway Patrol. I gotta watch the road.” Then, Dooley proceeded out U.S. Highway 84 toward Mexia, which was “wet” for beer. There was no liquor-by-the-drink except in private clubs in those days. I just settled in the back seat and watched “the show.” As soon as we hit the city limits, Dooley pressed the gas pedal a little more forcefully. In a few seconds, he asked, “How fast we goin’ now, Pencil?” “You doin’ 60, Dooley.” He mashed a tad more on the accelerator. “How fast we goin’ now, Pencil?” “Uh, y-y-you doin’ 70, Dooley.” (The speed limit was 55 in the early 1950s.) So, Dooley pushed
a lot harder on the gas pedal. “How fast we goin’ now, Pencil?” “Y-y-yo-you doin’ 85, Duh-Dooley.” Same game. “Y-y-y-yo-you doin’ ni, ni, ninety-five, Doo-DuhDuh-Dooley.” Pedal to the metal. Question. “Y-y-y-y-yo-yo-you d-duh-d-doo-in uh hun-hun-hun-uh and tuh-tuh-10, D-Duh-DooDooley.” At that point we’d arrived at Dooley’s favorite beer joint. He didn’t have to ask Pencil to get out and get them a beer. Pencil got out grabbed two beers and passed one to Dooley and Pencil proceeded to chug-a-lug his longneck in what had to be record time. Thankfully, we drove a little slower going home. When I got in Dooley’s car thereafter, I asked where we were going. If he said, “Mexia,” I politely excused myself and said something about being late for class. LETTER TO THE EDITOR OUTRAGED BY SALARIES After returning from vacation and catching up on the Hays Free Press issues, I am outraged and saddened by the “Top Salaries in the area” article. I find it reprehensible that the administrators of Hays CISD are paid 2,3 and 4 times what longterm teachers are paid.
Yes, administrators work more weeks of the year .... but you cannot tell me that they put in more hours in a year than a dedicated teacher. They do not have the daily challenges of classroom teachers. They do not always have more degrees than classroom teachers. They are not evaluated based on

It helps them along the way with researching tools and arguments to bring to the table. One thing Loeb recommends for residents considering an appeal is to get the assessments of surrounding neighbors. Valle said once the protest is filed the property owner will receive a scheduled appointment letter with a staff appraisers name, phone number and email address so the property owner can contact them. The deadline is July 6, but there is a way to get an extension for filing a protest. “If property owners would still like to file an appeal after the deadline, they may submit late protests to the Appraisal Review Board before July 20 with good cause,” Valle said. “The ARB will decide where there is good cause.”
David Valle, Hays County chief appraiser, said there have been 3,168 protests filed as of June 16. Valle said being granted an amended appraisal depends on the evidence
the property owner submits or presents to the staff appraiser or ARB. He said the timeline for the entire process depends on the number of protests in the county and scheduling.

Hays County swimmer heads to Olympic Swim Trials BY MOSES LEOS III
news@haysfreepress.com
Ever since his freshman year of high school, Dripping Springs High graduate and UIL state swimming gold medalist Micah Slaton has dreamt of going to the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Neb. It was a dream fostered when he watched the event on television for the first time in 2012. “I didn’t know what it was about. I didn’t even
know there even was a trial for the Olympics,” Slaton said. “But it was super cool. There were fireworks shooting off from the side of the pool. It was super special for sure.” Fast forward four years and Slaton, who graduated from Dripping Springs High in June, will see his dream come true as he competes in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly events 2016 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials. “I’m super excited. It’s

been a goal of mine since freshman year,” Slaton said. “It’s been my end goal of my senior year to qualify. It means a lot.” Slaton’s road to reaching Omaha was a feat accomplished during the
final week to meet qualifying times, or cuts. He made his Olympic Trial cuts at a small agegroup meet at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to the meet in Austin, Slaton missed the
cut during the Atlanta Classic swim meet at Georgia Tech. With one last chance to get in, Slaton said he returned home, regrouped and rested for a week before hitting the pool. “I put on a fast suit and had the 200 (meter butterfly) the first day, but didn’t make the cut,” Slaton said. “I then tuned up for the 100-fly the next day, but I went for the (200) and got the cut first.” Training to reach the cuts meant a focus on
weight training, which Slaton said “helped a lot.” Last year, Slaton said he focused on aerobic and crossfit style body weight training regiments. During the course of 2016, Slaton added in core training, with weight lifting one time a week. “The heavier lifting once a week helped out with strength,” Slaton said. “The overall difference maker was the lifting.”

For the third time in the last four seasons, the Hays High boys basketball program will have a new head coach patrolling the sidelines. Hays High Athletic Coordinator Neal LaHue confirmed Friday the departure of Rebel boys basketball head coach Sam Lunz, who resigned his position earlier this month. Lunz was hired to
take over as the head boys basketball coach at Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, according to a report by the Jackson Hole News & Guide. “I thought he did a good job. I really liked Sam,” LaHue said in an emailed response. “He was really a good person and good for our profession. We will miss him.” The search is on for the school’s third head boys basketball coach since the 2012 season. Lunz took over the Rebel program in
2014 after the departure of current Westlake High head boys basketball head coach Robert Lucero. Lucero was hired in 2013 after the departure of Dean McMullen, who is currently the head boys basketball coach at Pflugerville Connally High. Lunz compiled a 29-32 overall record during his two-year tenure at Hays High. His tenure included leading the Rebel boys basketball team to the regional quarterfinal playoff round in 2014.

Meanwhile, in the pool, Slaton said progression on improving his times continued. Aerobic training helped him “hold faster times on tighter intervals,” Slaton said. The focus now turns to gearing up for the trials. Slaton said his competition are college swimmers, who are seeded based on their qualifying times. Leading up to the meet, Slaton said he would increase the intensity of his practices as he fine tunes his starts and turns in the pool. Keeping focus is also the goal for Slaton, who is going through his three-week resting period prior to the trials. “Going into big meets when you’re resting, you keep your blinders on and keep focus,” Slaton said. “It’s easy to get caught up on your thoughts and get nervous.” But Slaton expects to see athletes performing at their best at the event. He also said it would allow him the chance to see how many swimmers handle pressure

situations and “doing all the right things they need to do to secure an Olympic spot.” “No one is guaranteed a spot (on the U.S. Olympic Team), even (Michael) Phelps is not guaranteed a spot,” Slaton said. “There will be a lot of world class athletes at their best. It’s something to learn from for me.” The chance to compete in what Slaton called the “fastest swim meet in the world” is something he looks forward to. Slaton said nearly every session of the swim meet is sold out. “It’s nuts, it’s awesome,” Slaton said. “If you ask any anyone that is an Olympian, the U.S. Olympic Trials is as nervewracking, if not more nervewracking, than the Olympics. But the ability to represent Dripping Springs, where Slaton began his swim career at the Belterra swim complex, was “really cool,” he said. “Looking back at how far I’ve come, it’s cool to see,” Slaton said. “Looking back and seeing that is a cool experience.”

The Hays CISD Board of Trustees Monday elected its president, vice president and secretary for the 20162017 school year. The board first took a vote on the presidential position. Two individuals who received nominations were board trustee Holly Raymond and Merideth Keller, who served as president of the board during the 2015-2016 school year. Board trustee Holly Raymond received the majority of votes and immediately assumed the presidential position. Raymond was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2012 and is a 1996 alumna of Hays High School. Raymond is currently the chief financial officer for Common Threads, a non-profit organization that focuses on teaching nutrition and cooking skills to students and families in underserved areas. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale, or worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.

YMCA proposes partnership for pool with HCISD in Buda STAFF REPORT
YMCA of Austin CEO James Finck presented a proposal at Monday’s Hays CISD agenda review meeting for the district to pay for construction of a new pool at Camp Cypress, a YMCA-owned, 85-acre nature preserve, which is located in Buda at Onion Creek on Old San Antonio Road. In the proposal, the YMCA is asking Hays CISD for $2 million to be added to the proposed May 2017 bond. The YMCA would like the district to pay for the pool in order to build a stronger partnership between the two entities. After the pool is built, the YMCA will take on full responsibility of operations and maintenance Finck said it would be an opportunity to expand recreation activities and have a location for a Hays CISD swim team.
Michael McKie, Hays CISD superintendent, said there have been preliminary meetings to discuss the benefits of a

On the day before Mother’s Day, Kyle resident Savannah Hernandez got a call from her best friend telling her that her house had burned down. Hernandez returned to find that she had lost just about everything in her home. On one hand, she was grateful that none of the house’s six residents were home that day. Her parents were in Corpus Christi, her two children were with her boyfriend, and she was at work. On the other hand, she was now living in a hotel. “Honestly, I had no idea what we were going to do,” Hernandez said. Fortunately, faculty and students at her son Derrick de la Zerda’s school knew exactly what to do – throw a party, gather donations, and call in the wrestlers. That’s how Hernandez and her family found themselves at Pinballz Kingdom in Buda on June 19. Shortly after hearing news of the fire, Tobias Elementary School’s principal Paige Collier reached out to NWA Pro Wrestling TeXas to

Half of all ticket proceeds at the event went to benefit Hernandez and her family. The idea for organizing the benefit, teacher Grace Bohanon Casteneda said, came from the Walk the Path anti-bullying program, which had brought pro wrestlers to the school
earlier in the year. Add to that, the fact that Hernandez’s family loves wrestling, and that her son Derrick had a birthday coming up just after the disaster, the rest fell into place. The idea to help the family fit perfectly with the school’s belief in “filling buckets,” Casteneda said. It began first, literally, with a coin drive, and then figuratively, with “the
best birthday ever.” “We teach our kids to ‘fill buckets’ with happiness, love, care, and support,” Casteneda said. “We wanted the kids to understand – when you go through a loss as significant as that, what can we do? And our second graders came together behind their classmate with love and joy.” Hernandez may have been surprised to see signs saying “We love you, Derrick!” and “Pennies for Derrick!” when she came to pick up her son the Thursday after the fire. But the party floored her, where the entire family was surprised with a wrestling-themed cake, and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” from Derrick’s classmates, and tickets to “A Night to Give Back.” “A Night to Give Back” showcased pro wrestlers including Ryan Greeness, Shane Taylor, Raymond Rowe, Keith Lee and Chris Marval, and also included a silent auction sponsored by Hays County Radio. wenty-four-yearold Wilmer Allison stunned the tennis world on June 28, 1930 by beating the defending singles titleholder in straight sets in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. An outstanding high school athlete in Fort Worth, Wilmer was thrilled to death when a Texas League team offered him a professional contract. But his father would not give his consent for his son to play any sport for money, and that was the end of a promising baseball career. Turning to tennis at the ripe old age of 17, Wilmer quickly mastered the new game. In no time at all, he was clobbering kids who grew up thinking tennis elbow was a childhood ailment as common as measles. Under the watchful eye of Dr. D.A. Penick, the University of Texas tennis coach, the late bloomer blossomed into the finest campus netter in the country. Capturing the intercollegiate crown, he was eager to give the international tour a try. Big Bill Tilden, reigning ruler of the white-lined court, soon shattered the newcomer’s confidence. After giving Wilmer a humiliating lesson in the finer points of the game, he cruelly quipped, “He’s no good and never will be.” Although the Texan continued to struggle as a solo performer, he fared far better in the two-man version. Paired with John Van Ryn, they won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1929 and again in 1930. In what turned out to be their last meeting, Tilden eliminated Wilmer with embarrassing ease from the 1930 singles competition at Wimbledon. The subsequent defection of Big Bill to the play-for-pay circuit did not improve Wilmer’s chances since Fred Perry of Great Britain replaced Tilden as his personal nemesis. As a perennial member of the American team, Wilmer wound up with a record of 32 Davis Cup matches to his credit. And if he had not been robbed at Paris in 1932, the total would have been 33. Two hours into a

grueling contest with a hometown favorite named Barotra, Wilmer reached match point for the third time. Exhausted by three tough matches in two days, he knew this was his last chance to put away his opponent. But at that moment, in blatant violation of the continuous-play rule, Barotra motioned for a ball boy to bring him a new pair of shoes. As 12,000 French fans roared their approval, he slowly laced the sneakers and caught his breath. When Barotra finally stepped to the line, he put his first serve in the net. An elated Wilmer watched the second serve sail beyond the baseline. Double fault! Not so in the eyes of a partisan judge, who called the ball in and gave the point to his countryman. Barotra came back to take the match that rightfully belonged to the American, and Wilmer went into a twoyear tailspin. In the 1935 Wimbledon tournament, the Texan’s 31-year-old legs could not keep up with the ball. At an age when no one in tennis history had ever won a major championship, retirement seemed to be the sensible option. And he might have given up the game right then and there, if Tilden had not remarked with his customary candor, “Wilmer Allison is past his prime and his prime was nothing to wire your Aunt Bertha about.” Returning to the States, Wilmer spent three weeks in Maine resting up for the U.S. Open. Big Bill’s widely publicized cheap shot had filled him with a fresh and fierce resolve to go out a winner. In the quarter-finals, Wilmer demolished Enrique Maier in 50 fast-paced minutes conceding just ten games in three one-sided sets to the superb Spaniard. Awed by the flawless form and intensity of the rejuvenated Texan, everyone at courtside agreed it was a real shame he had drawn Fred Perry for the next round.
Five times Wilmer had met the numberone tennis player on the planet, and five times he had lost – badly. But not even the phenomenal Perry could derail destiny, and he too succumbed in straight sets. Wilmer’s fans feared a natural letdown in the finals, but he was not about to settle for second place. Forty-eight minutes after the opening serve, he was crowned the undisputed king of American tennis. Wilmer hung up his racket a year and half later in 1937. With nothing left to prove and hounded by injuries, he chose to get on with his life. He spent the next two decades, except for military service in World War II, in Austin and enjoyed
a successful career as a cotton broker. Then in 1957 he replaced his former mentor Dr. Penick as the UT tennis coach. With Wilmer Allison in charge, the Longhorns were the cream of the

On the herbal side, rosemary, Mexican mint marigold, garden sage and Mexican oregano seem to be doing just fine with infrequent, deep waterings. We can’t forget the yuccas and agaves. No water – no problem. I planted an Agave Americana (century plant) out by my front gate 6 years ago and without any extra water it has turned into 15 plants! For annual color, tops are vinca-periwinkle, with purslanes and moss-roses
in second place. For another opinion I consulted with Jerry Hinton, who works with me at the nursery. Here’s Jerry’s list: Mexican mint marigold, Mexican oregano, Mexican feathergrass, santolina, dwarf Barbados cherry, thyrallis, silver bush germander, yaupon holly, silver ponyfoot and Gregg’s dalea. With a little planning and a great number of drought tolerant and heat hardy plants to choose

During our ten days in Houston with Ron’s mom (94), our city’s streets became noticeably more “white.” And, loose aggregate got squashed into the surface. Lanes where the four trash pickup services do not travel have not changed. To my eyes, those heavy trucks are serving a purpose – for now. The City Council knows the trucks will cause damage in time. And, multiple trash pickup services means trash cans are at the curb most days, picked up by large trucks. If you are on the City’s email distribution (available through a process on www.mountaincitytx. com), word came to you that the Council voted in the June meeting to begin the bid process to move to one provider throughout Mountain City. Area entertainment venues flourish as Kyle, Buda grow BY BAILEY BUCKINGHAM Hays Free Press Reporter
Within Buda and Kyle are two family-friendly businesses that not only offer entertainment experiences for any age group, but also have experienced success due to the growth in the area. EVO Entertainment opened its Kyle location in 2014, and Pinballz Kingdom in Buda opened its doors in the same year. Both businesses attract business from residents within and outside of Hays County. Mitchell Roberts, EVO Entertainment CEO, said the motivation for opening a location in Kyle was due to the rapid growth the city has seen over the years, along with the desire to fill the need of an entertainment venue PHOTO BY MOSES LEOS III in the area. “(Kyle) is a flourishing Arcade games at both EVO and Pinballz Kingdom have proven to be a draw for visitors. city, that at the time was Creekside Cinema in “That’s the beauty of in need of an extraordiwhich was the second EVO, there is something nary venue to get togeth- New Braunfels, EVO in highest amount collected for everyone. “We love the city of Kyle, we love Central Texas and we couldn’t be anymore proud to be a part of this community,” Roberts said. Jeremy Mendoza, Pinballz Kingdom operations manager, said the Buda location was meant to represent a new and evolved Pinballz, as it is the second location for the company. The original location in Austin is BYOB with a small cafe for snacks and drinks. “Pinballz Kingdom (in Buda) has a full bar and restaurant added to the existing arcade idea,” Mendoza said. “We have two outside bars to accommodate live music, shows and parties.” Mendoza said the Buda location has had tremendous success within the mid-twenties age range. In the past year, they have seen growth in their food and beverage sales. In May 2016, Pinballz Kingdom collected nearly $48,000 in alcohol sales, which was the second highest in the city. “We are constantly working to exceed the expectations of not only the owners, but our patrons as well,” Mendoza said.
