Fajita King dies at age of 81 BY DAVID WHITE

A local area icon whose claim to fame was introducing the fajita as a mainstay in Tex-Mex cuisine has died today at the age of 81. Juan Antonio “Sonny” Falcon was originally from Mercedes, Texas and made his way to Austin in 1959 where he got a job in shipping and receiving at the Austin Meat Market. In 1962 Falcon married Guadalupe Guajardo and soon thereafter became the meat market manager in his wife’s parents’ East Austin neighborhood store, called Guajardo’s Cash Grocery. It was during this time Falcon experimented with an old Rio Grand Valley recipe in which he took beef skirt, cooked it until tender and served it with tortillas. The meat was cut into little strips, thus the name fajitas – fajitas being the Spanish word for little belts. The normally tough-tochew beef skirt was never thought of as a prime piece of meat and was usually ground up or sold as

LETTERS GUIDELINES

Buda police are asking to use residents’ and businesses’ surveillance cameras in a new crime prevention program called Smart Watch. Locals can share their surveillance camera locations with police and can voluntarily provide the footage for investigations. If a neighborhood or business is targeted, police will check Smart Watch to find cameras in the affected area that could help the investiga-

tion, said Crime Prevention Officer Freddy Erdman. “First, we identify a potential area of impact then we go to a secure registry (Smart Watch) and break it down by subdivision or location that may have video evi-

dence. Myself, detectives, or officers involved will contact people on the registry and ask to review their video and see if they captured anything,” Erdman said. The Smart Watch is a way for Buda police to create a partnership

with the community, said Erdman. Participation in the program is entirely based on consent of the camera owner. “We don’t have remote access to the cameras. People are not obligated to turn it over,” Erdman said. “They can partic-

ipate at any level they want. If they share the video, that’s great. If not, thank you for your time.” The video footage could potentially be used in a criminal investigation. However, Erdman said it is unlikely that the camera owner will be brought to court or any legal proceedings in the case. Depending on the type of investigation, the camera owner could be used as a witness, but Erdman said it is unlikely. To sign up for the Smart Watch Program, go online to find the form.

Tired of updating your apps? Tyrades by Danny Tyree

D

o you share my frustration at being required to update smartphone apps at the most inopportune of times? With aggravating regularity, my quick lunchtime stops at fast-food chains have become anything but efficient. Silly me, I turn to the restaurant’s “trusty” app for the daily deals, only to be told that the app I updated two weeks ago is suddenly in need of ANOTHER crucial update and will not function AT ALL until I genuflect to the code-writing gods and redo the whole process. (When a corporation’s “best and brightest” are constantly experiencing “Oh, wait, I forgot something” moments, don’t expect me to place oodles of confidence in the “Employees must wash hands after using restroom” signs.) Okay, I’m hungry and cheap, so I sheepishly step out of line and try downloading, installing, lathering, rinsing and repeating what I thought had been a perfectly serviceable application. The “update, order, eat and get back to work” process grinds to a standstill when the app outright LIES to me and insists I don’t have enough space on my phone and that I will have to DELETE one of my other apps. So instead of enjoying a leisurely meal at an eatery where my family and I made many carefree memories in halcyon preapp days, I am plunged into a nerve-racking game of “The rowboat is sinking, and you can save only your wife OR your child! PICK ONE! Tick tock, tick tock!” I seldom notice any practical technological improvements when I comply with the command to update. I can handle a human being asking me, “You want fries with that?”; but I come unglued when an anonymous programmer asks me, “You want bells and whistles with that?” Usually, the stated reasons for an update are gibberish to me. I do notice “improved stability” popping up with some frequency. So, apparently my phone is “unstable.” That’s why I’ve taken to keeping it locked in the car trunk when I take a shower, so we don’t have any of this Alfred Hitchcock “Psycho” drama going on. By the time I finally get my grub, if an acquaintance asks me whether my phone has an Android platform or iOS platform, all I’m interested in is a platform high enough for me to plunge to my merciful doom! Of course, not all updates are so heavy-handed and mandatory. Some time-tested apps will keep limping along indefinitely. But the retailer, news site, social media hub or game developer will try to GUILT you into going with the latest version. (You’re liable to scuff your phone dragging your knuckles like that, don’t’cha know?) Yes, you can stick with your quaint software, but you’ll be doing the “swipe of shame” while all the cool kids laugh behind your back. The app stores become more persistent when there’s some recent “security issue” that they’ve hurriedly patched up. It really makes you want to go back to cash, paper maps and board games when you’re cajoled into playing “Consumers, let’s see if we can continue to stay one step ahead of the evildoers! Oh, crud! Larry has gone over to the Dark Side.” Don’t get me wrong. I really appreciate some of my apps; but more and more, when someone says, “There’s an app for that,” I gaze at my phone and sigh, “There’s a ball peen hammer for that.”

Was Trump all that worried about corruption?

T

he best defense the Republicans have been able to mount in the impeachment inquiry has been that President Trump was rightly concerned about corruption in Ukraine, and was acting properly in attempting to make sure our military aid did not go to a country where it would just be divvied up by the rich and powerful for themselves. That is certainly a legitimate concern, and most of us would agree that we don’t want our tax dollars being wasted that way. So was it Trump’s true purpose to root out corruption? If so, that raises a series of questions. What made him think Zelensky was not already very serious about cleaning up corruption in his country? Zelensky had run for President of Ukraine on an anti-corruption platform, and was elected by a landslide. He is universally praised by the State Department as a good person who is not motivated by selfish gain. What reason could Trump have had, to think Zelensky would so thoroughly betray his supporters? Why did he approve aid to the previous, corrupt, pro-Putin administration, all without objection or condition?

God and Country by Phil Jones

Why didn’t Trump trust his own Department of Defense? Ukraine had already met all the DoD’s corruption-related requirements, so the military aid had been cleared, even before Trump decided to put a hold on it. Why did he not mention rooting out corruption as a key concern in his first phone call with Zelensky on April 21? (Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, the top expert on Ukraine at the National Security Council, had recommended that he mention it, in the talking points for that call.) Why did he not mention it on July 25 either? Why did he remove Marie Yovanovitch from her post as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine? She had a sterling reputation as a fierce anti-corruption force in Ukraine. He has never really explained why he said she was “bad news”, and in the impeachment inquiry, she was showered with praise by members of both parties. Sure, the President has the right to appoint ambassadors as he chooses, but having

recalled her from her post, why take the additional step of smearing her and trashing both her reputation and her work? Why did he recommend to Zelensky that Yuriy Lutsenko, who is well known to be a corrupt pro-Putin official, be retained in his post as Ukraine’s Prosecutor General? Why would he characterize Lutsenko as “very fair” and someone who had been “treated very badly”? If you want to root out corruption, surely you would not trust that job to someone known to be corrupt. Zelensky could not retain Lutsenko in that post without facing pushback from Zelensky’s own supporters. Why did Trump’s Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, use the power of his office to help secure a lucrative 50-year oil and gas deal with the Ukrainian government for a pair of his campaign donors? Doesn’t that at least create the impression of possible U.S. corruption? And why is it that Zelensky still has not gotten that White House meeting? Sadly, the answer to all these questions is simple. Trump believes Putin, rather than our own State Department. This appears to be yet another favor Trump is doing

for Putin. The false narrative that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election, and Russia did not, is Putin’s concoction, spewed out by Lutsenko and lapped up by Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer. If Putin can sell this narrative, he hopes to get a lifting of the sanctions that Obama and an overwhelming bipartisan majority in Congress placed on Russia. He also hopes to get his hands back on a slice of all that money. What money, you ask? All the oil and gas that goes from Russia to Western Europe flows through Ukraine. Before Zelensky was elected, Putin got a cut of all that, through Russian mob boss Dmitro Firtash. (Firtash is now under indictment in Austria for bribery, and awaiting extradition to the U.S.) And although all 17 of our intelligence agencies and a bipartisan committee in the Senate all concluded that it was Russia that interfered in the 2016 election, Trump believes Putin about that too. Which raises the most disturbing question of all. Where do Donald Trump’s loyalties actually lie? We have never had to seriously ask this question, about any other president.

Lehman boys soccer looks to defend district crown in 2020 BY MOSES LEOS III

Coming off the heels of last season’s wildly successful campaign, Lehman High boys soccer head coach Rene Medina didn’t waste time in wiping the slate clean. With only three lettermen returning from last season’s 25-6A district title winning squad, Medina made sure his players knew the size shoes they’d need to fill as they head into 2020. By instilling a mantra of “compete every day,” Medina aims to prepare a young crop of Lobos for the chance to defend their district crown. “We told the guys they have questions to answer, roles to fit into and shoes to fill,” Medina said. “What we’ve seen is a group of guys who have come together. Lately it’s been energetic. They’ve are ready to get after it.” Leading the way for Lehman are returning seniors Isaac Salazar and Edwin Beltran whose experience will be called upon this season. Medina said both players show “championship habits” both on and off the field, which is something he hopes younger players look up to. Lobo Luis Rodriguez, who saw limited playing time last

season, is also expected to see significant minutes in 2020. “They have a desire and the self-motivation to go out there and try to do the best they can,” Medina said. Behind them, however, is a group that consists mostly of underclassmen. Freshman Adrian Perez and sophomore Emilio Bartolo are two players Medina said could make a difference this season. While youth does bring about some change from a tactical standpoint, Medina said the Lobos plan to keep the same defensive-minded strategy on the table. "It does change a little based on the personnel we now have. But the way we play and the way the program wants to

look is on the kids buying into that,” Medina said. All of this comes as Lehman shoulders a sizeable target on its back in 2020. Perennial powers Lake Travis, Westlake, Bowie and Del Valle are slated to contend for the district title, while teams such as Hays, Anderson and Akins all gained valuable experience. Lehman suffered the largest hit by losing 17 players to graduation this past summer. “You can’t take a night off (in this district). All teams are solid and all of the teams are good,” Medina said. But at the same time, the Lobos have dealt with life as the hunted in 25-6A ever since last spring, Medina said. It’s a feeling Medina, his staff and players all relish. “It’s been a big theme since last spring. We’ve let the guys.know we have a big target on our back,” Medina said. “We have to adjust accordingly and have those daily habits and routines of a championship winning program.” Lehman opens the season at home against Corpus Christi Winn in the first round of the Rebel Cup held Jan. 1-3.

Lady Rebel soccer strives for playoffs in upcoming season BY SHANE SCHOLWINSKI Entering the 2020 season, Hays girls soccer head coach Mario Bellver wants his team to have fun, but also strive toward ending the program’s three-year playoff drought. “So expectations I think, first thing is we should have fun out there on the field,” Bellver said. “I believe win as many games as possible. And one goal is to definitely be in the top four (record in district).” In addition to lifting weights and running conditioning drills during the off-season program, the Lady Rebels have focused on perfecting their ball handling and scoring more goals. In order to score more goals, Bellver wants his team to play to their system rather than a formation, and to continue to push the ball up through their wings. Hays returns a small senior class of just four players that includes forward Izel Gaitan, midfielder Cianne Talamo, as well as defenders Aliya Ibarra and Mariah Acosta. Bellver said Talamo’s range and speed of running back and forth as the key factors in her playmaking ability. As for Gaitan, she will be tasked with leading Hays defense. Her leadership qualities and competitive spirt gives Bellver confidence in her ability to lead the team. On the offensive attack, Hays will be relying on junior strikers Kayli Wagner and Janneke Waenink. Wagner returns from last year’s squad, while Waenink, an international exchange student from the Netherlands, is playing in her first season with the Lady Rebels. freshman Bella Briceno. Bellver envisions using both goalkeepers throughout the season. In order to get better on the field and achieve their goal of making the playoffs, Bellver wants to see improvement with communication between players and having a good mindset during practices and games. “I want to see that we hold together as a team, everybody should be able to talk to everybody on the team about anything soccer related,” said Bellver. “And everybody with a positive mindset. If we keep that positive mindset, and we are able to run and play soccer the way we practice, then I think that should definitely show on the scoreboard.” Hays opens the season Jan. 2 against Corpus Christi Flour Bluff at Burger Stadium in Austin.

Bechtel, a standout pitcher and four-year letter winner on the Lehman High softball team, signed on to continue her playing career at Concordia University in Austin. Concordia University is a Division III school and competes in the American Southwest Conference (ASC). Joining Bechtel at her signing were parents Brett and Nancy Bechtel, as well as Lehman head softball coach Robert Young and assistant coach Karen Young. Urea, who is entering her fourth year competing on the Lobo girls golf team, signed to continue playing at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. The Casses on Live Oak Court and the McClendons (JOY) have the LMC “Legacy Award”. In 2018 they were removed from the recognition process and given this permanent special award. Val and Holly, and, Ralph and Marcia wanted others to obtain “Grand Prize” and “People’s Favorite,” the awards they earned year after year. On Friday night, childen on the Santa Party hayride voted for 102 Pecan @Pin Oak as “Kid’s Favorite.” Over the weekend, residents voted online for the “top winners.” Thanks to former Mayor LaVerne McClendon, who initiated “Let’s Light Up The City.” Some of her “little green Christmas trees” are still in use, marking each house nominated for a Big Award. Give Brian Porterfield and Patricia Porterfield a big round of applause for adding scallops of lights to the Big Oak Tree. Patricia also helped with the remainder of Loving Mountain City’s “City Hall Christmas Light Project” and helped me install the “little green Christmas trees.” Condolences to The Hauptrief family. About dusk on Tuesday, December 10, their dark dachshund, Louis, was hit and killed near Live Oak at Maple. The driver did not stop. Just minutes before, Elsa Saiva (red and white decorated house on Hemlock at Juniper), noticed the loose dog and tried in vain to catch him. She posted a photo on the Facebook page of Loving MountainCity. Minutes later, Louis was hit. This sad note is a reminder to drive safely and be kind. Reminder: send tidbits, please. Sam Houston the loser in ‘archives war’ O n the night of Dec. 30, 1842, Angelina Eberly sounded the alarm that dealt Sam Houston a stinging defeat and kept the new capital of the Texas Republic from drying up and blowing away. Taking Houston’s place as president in December 1839, Mirabeau Lamar advocated construction of a capital city on the western limits of the three year old nation. Built on the banks of the Colorado River smack dab in the middle of Indian territory, it would be dedicated to the memory of Stephen F. Austin. Sam Houston and other influential East Texans attacked Lamar’s idea as an unnecessary strain on the hard-strapped treasury. The site was ridiculed as foolishly dangerous and outrageously inconvenient. Nonetheless, congress gave the project its blessing, and in October 1839 Austin was officially proclaimed the headquarters of the Lone Star Republic. Houston kept up a steady barrage of barbs against what he blasted as “the most unfortunate site upon earth for the Seat of Government.” When Texans voted for a second Houston administration in late 1841, it was no secret the president-elect planned to turn Austin into a ghost town. The surprise seizure of San Antonio, Refugio and Goliad by a Mexican strike force in March 1842 dramatically strengthened arguments of Austin’s vulnerability and gave President Houston a golden opportunity. In private he acknowledged the brief invasion was a case of face-saving theatrics by Mexico, but in public Old Sam shrewdly exploited the widespread fear. He ordered George Hockley, secretary of war and marine, to move the government papers from Austin to Houston for safety’s sake. Confronted by a bitter protest from the citizens of the capital, the skittish cabinet officer backed down and buried the documents. Citing the insecurity of the frontier, Houston called for a special session of congress to convene in June at Houston. Many western members smelled a trap and refused to attend, but a quorum finally assembled for an address from the president. Emphasizing the hardship of conducting official business in Austin, Houston dropped the twin questions of the archives and the capital in the congressmen’s laps. Far more concerned with retaliation against the Mexicans than the presidential obsession with Austin, the politi-

cians ignored the speech and instead passed a war resolution, which an angry Houston vetoed. His anti-war stand seriously undermined Houston’s prestige and popularity. From the elections in early September, his opponents emerged stronger and loaded bear. Realistic friends begged the embattled president to compromise on the capital controversy. Although it rubbed his principles and ego raw, Houston agreed to meet his adversaries halfway. For the time being he would not insist on reinstating Houston as the capital, if the other side dropped its demand on behalf of Austin. How about Washington-on-the-Brazos? No one was thrilled by the suggestion, but it was better than the current stalemate. However, the very day Houston declared the virtually deserted hamlet the temporary capital, the Mexicans struck again. After another short stopover in San Antonio, the foreign troops hightailed it for the Rio Grande. In the meantime, Houston completed his relocation and by Oct. 2 was ready for business at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Capitalizing on the latest threat, he again ordered retrieval of the archives. A hurriedly impaneled Austin grand jury indicted the President of Texas for “moral treason.” A mob roughed up Houston’s messenger, shaved his horse’s mane and tail and put the contested

documents under armed guard. Vowing to settle the archives issue once and for all, Houston issued instructions on Dec. 10 to the Texas Rangers to remove the records from Austin. He authorized them to use whatever means necessary, force of arms if it came to that, to carry out their mission. Three weeks after receiving their secret orders, 20 Rangers rode silently into Austin in the dead of night. With the whole town fast asleep, their task seemed easy enough, but they failed to reckon on the feisty proprietor of a local hotel. Roused from her bed by strange noises, Angelina Eberly spotted the shadowy figures loading the Houston-bound wagons with crate after crate of government papers. Not about to lose her livelihood over a silly political dispute, she rushed outside in her night clothes and fired a thunderous shot from her handy cannon. The Rangers somehow escaped but were surrounded by pursuers the next afternoon in Williamson County. Deciding the documents and the president’s personal agenda were not worth fighting for, the practical lawmen surrendered the archives. Ten days later, Sam Houston grudgingly admitted defeat in a message to the House of Representatives. The archives stayed put, Austin remained the capital and the Hero of San Jacinto lost his first and only war. Bartee has a can’t-miss talk for the New Year! The history of Texas elections!
