New residents delight Buda with 45-foot Christmas tree BY CARLIE PORTERFIELD

Don and Judy St. John are celebrating their first holiday season in their new Buda home, complete with a 45-foot-tall homemade Christmas tree that towers over their neighborhood. Both Don and Judy hope to share it with the surrounding community. At more than six times

the height of the average Christmas tree and featuring about 10,000 lights, the tree has made the St. John’s yard in the White Oak Preserves subdivision a local holiday destination. Their home along Patriot Drive has already had plenty of visitors since Don and some helpful neighbors hoisted the tree up after Thanksgiving. Known for having

Christmas decorations worth seeing is a role they have taken up happily. “We put the tree up the first time for us. Now, it goes up for all to see,” Judy said. The tree has been a staple of the family’s Christmas traditions for a decade now. Don made it himself for the first time when the two lived in Manchaca by arrang-

ing metal poles together and wrapping them with Christmas lights. The first conceptualization of the tree was a mere 15 feet tall. Through a friendly rivalry with their next door neighbors, the St. John’s tree grew more and more, higher and higher, every year.

A purchase order not to exceed $34,900 is how much Kyle plans to invest in a proposed space-needs assessment for a possible new police headquarters. The move comes after weeks of debate on the topic, culminating in a 6-0 Dec. 18 vote by the Kyle City Council to approve the purchase order. Discussion on a new police headquarters began in 2009 when a space needs assessment was ordered by the previous council and completed by Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects. The assessment went unused however, and the growing department was left in the same building for another decade. Mayor Travis Mitchell says the Kyle City Coun-

Changes in the school calendar and teacher certifications are on the horizon in Hays CISD after leaders approved becoming a District of Innovation (DOI). On Dec. 17, the HCISD School Board of Trustees unanimously approved the DOI plan, which will be in effect over the next five years. Under the DOI plan, which goes into effect fall 2019, the district has the ability to begin and end the school year sooner to match the schedules of surrounding colleges. The plan also allows the district to hire career and technology education (CTE) teachers who are not certified as teachers. The district is joining more than 790 school districts across Texas designated as DOI. Each of these districts is able to design and approve its own plans independently, which allows district leaders to determine “innovative” ideas to implement that may not be allowed under Texas Education Agency (TEA). Dripping Springs ISD is the only other Hays County school district that is a DOI. The vote comes after weeks of discussion among parents, teachers, staff members and district leaders. However, some Hays CISD employees worried the

All along, Google’s been Googling me I thought Facebook knew too much about me, but it turns out Google is even worse. Google, like Facebook, makes its money by targeting ads at us that reflect our interests and needs. The more both know about us, the better they’re able to target us with ads we’re likely to click. But Google knows a lot more about me than I thought - plenty more than Facebook. Since I created a Google account – I use Gmail and Google Docs for my rental-property business – I have freely provided Google with lots of personal information. I’ve told Google my name, birthday and gender. It knows my phone number and password. It tracks my email correspondence, photos or videos I’ve saved, documents I’ve created in Google Docs, any calendar events I’ve noted, any contacts I’ve added. But Google also collects lots of data that I didn’t know I was providing. “When you use our services – for example, do a search on Google, get directions on Maps, or watch a video on YouTube – we collect data to make these services work better for you,” reports Google on its “Data Transparency” page. That’s where things get a little bit creepy. Not only does Google keep extensive data on the searches you’ve conducted and the websites you’ve visited, it likely knows where you are at this moment – and everywhere you’ve been. I discovered this when I reviewed some of the data Google has collected about me. My Android smartphone, I now know, has been sending Google my location data – incredibly detailed location data – for a very long time. I found this information on my personal Google Location History page. Curious, I clicked on “Saturday, December 15.” A map displayed the entire route I drove that day. At 9 a.m., Google knew that I left my house and drove to a diner; it knew the name and address of the diner. It knew that I spent 25 minutes in the diner

Guest Column by Tom Purcell

– I had breakfast with two hired hands who would help me that day – then arrived at U-Haul at 9:38 a.m. I left U-Haul with a box truck at 9:51 a.m. and arrived, at 10:33 a.m., at a private home to pick up some furniture I purchased from the owner. I left at 10:42 a.m. and drove to a consignment store to pick up more furniture. Google knows everywhere I went that day. In fact, Google knows everywhere I’ve been – and how much time I spent there – every moment of every day since I began using my Android years ago. “Google promises that it keeps all of this data safe during transit between your computer or smartphone and its servers,” reports CNBC. “It also says that its cloud infrastructure protects that data, and that it doesn’t give governments ‘direct access’ or ‘backdoor access’ to any information.” Why am I not comforted by this promise? It’s true that Google gives individuals the option of adjusting privacy settings. On Google’s Activity page, I can turn off location tracking and stop Google from tracking the devices I use, the YouTube videos I watch, my website activity and more. Still, it’s unsettling that anyone, let alone one of the biggest companies on Earth, knows so much about me – and about so many of us. Google it? With what I know now, it seems more like Google is Googling me.

it the kids down. Let the dogs out. Prop the grandparents up. The nation's patience has been richly rewarded, because the eagerly awaited list of the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of 2018 has been officially released. This truly is the most wonderful time of the year. But first a caution: please do not confuse this list with the top ten legitimate news stories of 2018. No. No. No. They are as different as charcoal sketches of historic steam engines and a bucket of compost. Like golden-stitched, sequined blue jean jackets are to chocolate brownies. Bow ties and dirt bikes. There are no wildfires or hurricanes or kids kept in cages or bone saws or cave dwelling Thai soccer teams, nor mention of the movie "The Happytime Murders" in this report. No casualties from the #MeToo or TimesUp movements. These are the stories that most lent themselves to (s)mocking and scoffing and taunting. So here they are, the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of 2018. 10. PROPOSAL TO

GIVE TEACHERS GUNS. Brilliant idea. And the cure for concussions is hammers. It admittedly would add an interesting element to the faculty lounge. Might help parent teacher conferences resolve a little earlier. Of course then all the school employees would want them. And the librarians would demand silencers on theirs. 9. KIM KARDASHIAN MEETS WITH TRUMP. In May, the two broke the old record for largest assemblage of White House ass, set in 1978 when Jimmy Carter welcomed the Upper Michigan Donkey Basketball Champions. Five months later her husband Kanye West set the bar even higher. Or lower. 8. KIM JONG UN & THE SINGAPORE SUMMIT. A win-win. Trump got a great photo op and Kim Jong Un got to leave North Korea and eat real food.

7. BOOKS ON TRUMP. Four major publications and every one calls him nuttier than the hospitality suite at a squirrel convention. Stormy Daniels said his male member looks like a mushroom prompting a protest from the American Mushroom Institute. Apparently, every twenty years America needs to know the shape of the leader of the leader of the free world. 6. VLADIMIR PUTIN & THE HELSINKI SUMMIT. The president made Neville Chamberlain look like a mixed martial arts champ. He sucked up so hard he probably left hickeys. 5. UN LAUGHS AT TRUMP. After he claimed to be the best president EVER, they laughed. And because of translation delays, it was a slow ripple of laughter punctuated by the occasional guffaw. 4. WHITE HOUSE CORRUPTION. His malfeasance is so large it can be seen from space. Rick Gates testified under oath he stole money from Paul Manafort who stole money from Donald Trump who stole money from everybody. These guys are the Russian nesting dolls

of crime. 3. THE KAVANAUGH HEARINGS. Women outraged for being disenfranchised and white men outraged for... having their entitlements challenged. 2. THE BLUE WAVE. Against all odds, the Democrats actually exhibited a pulse. The midterms were less of an election and more of an intervention. 1. DONALD JOHN TRUMP. Refuses to release his DNA to prove he's a carbon-based life-form. The president calls his administration a finely tuned machine, which certainly sounds better than out-of-control dumpster fire but might be a little less apt. DOI status would come with more than the plan entails, including larger classrooms, unqualified teachers and more testing. District leaders said the only changes coming with the DOI status are school start times and CTE certification changes, which by law, are the only changes the district can implement now that the plan is finalized. “The exemption that we are looking to vacate is that the school district cannot begin before the fourth Monday in August,” said HCISD Superintendent Eric Wright. “We’re just looking for a more balanced calendar. Teachers’ calendars will still remain the same number of days.” According to district officials, just because the board can now implement these changes, it does not guarantee they will. Calendar meetings for the 2019-20 school year begins in January. “The implementation is limited to hiring specialized instructional staff without certification if someone does not have both,” Wright said. Board Vice President Esparanza Orosco supported the DOI status and said the plan will not change over time. However, if the district did opt to make any changes, Orosco said she would only support them if it favored teachers and staff. “I want to ensure our employees that we are

Under the DOI plan, the district has the ability to begin and end the school year sooner to match the schedules of surrounding colleges. The plan also allows the district to hire career and technology education (CTE) teachers who are not certified as teachers.

Spreading Christmas cheer for all to hear

Elm Grove Elementary School Foundational Learning classes enjoyed a visit from Santa earlier this month. Teacher Julie McCann brought William Ammann, the district's completely unofficial, but hugely popular representative Santa, to visit students. The Hays High Foundational Learning class also joined the varsity Women’s Choir for a caroling session. The group performed several holiday hits during the performance.

–Dr. Catherine Bitney, psychologist and senior lecturer at Texas State University

Bitney said. “In part, it’s human nature, but we don’t do enough as humans to help each other.” For Claunch, living with depression ultimately brought her back to Texas after attending a school in California. During her time there, Claunch’s social anxiety prevented her from leaving her dorm room and kept her from interacting with others. Once she transferred

During this time, Claunch was diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which triggers severe depression and anxiety in the week prior to starting her monthly menstrual cycle.

at Texas State, Bitney counsels students when she is not teaching in the classroom. At times, some students must wait two to three weeks before they can be seen by a counselor. “Typically, therapy is most effective when you see someone once a week,” Bitney said, “And the counselors are so busy, they can sometimes only see someone once every three weeks.” This can force students to seek services outside of the university, which for many, is not economically feasible. “Every year, the counseling department is begging for more money and the best we can get is half a counselor who works

From the moment she was formally diagnosed at 16, Catherine Claunch’s life has centered around her fight against depression. After a six-year campaign to finish college, Claunch overcame fears and anxiety that dictated her life and obtained her degree from Texas State University. However, getting to that point was a challenge for Claunch, who attended multiple schools due in part to her fight against depression. Claunch is one of many who suffer from depression and are fighting to overcome it. Anxiety and depression among college students is an increasing problem, according to a 2017 annual report by Penn State University’s center for collegiate mental health. For Claunch, a strong support system in her family guided her through the challenges and to her success. But for those who do not have a strong social support system, the occurence of mental illnesses like depression

and anxiety among young people could continue to rise. “If you don’t have good social support, you are more vulnerable to these kinds of illnesses,” said Dr. Catherine Bitney, a licensed psychologist and senior lecturer at Texas State University. “What about those students who have nowhere to go during Thanksgiving and Christmas? What about the students who are queer or outsiders to their families? The ‘holiday blues’ can be common, especially if you don’t have support.” According to the Penn State report, college students can also struggle with social isolation, self-esteem and confidence. Bitney, who specializes in clinical, counseling, cross-cultural and health psychology, said research indicates that younger people, based on brain and cognitive development, are more vulnerable. “Often times, we like to compare ourselves to others. ‘Oh, my brother got this scholarship and I didn’t.’ ‘My friends graduated and I haven’t,’”

cil intends to use the assessment to possibly guarantee the department more space. In previous meetings, Kyle City Council members have said expanding headquarters is necessary as space limitations is interrupting department functions. Mitchell said city council requested multiple options be surveyed for the department, which doubled the original cost of the assessment. City leaders requested survey options for renovating the current department headquarters, renovating the current building to merge it with the current city hall or moving to an entirely new space. “We want to manage all of our wastewater projects, our street projects and still be able to serve the police department,” Mitchell said. “We want to do this all while staying within our bonding capacity, which will be a challenge.” The latter option could call for moving city hall and city offices into proposed leased space that

could be built in Uptown Kyle, located near the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. Should that move forward, the city could opt to give Kyle Police its existing city hall facility on Main Street. Mitchell said the option would allow for costs to be split between two separate taxing sources, which would avoid any need to raise taxes or take out too much in bonds. Architects will also provide options for $1.5 million mixed budget. A newly built facility could cost upward of $18 million, but the city is interested in understanding how much could be done to the existing structure with a fixed amount. “I think we need to find out what the assessment tells us before we think about which option is best,” said Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett. “We outgrew our current building pretty much when we moved in, so we’re looking forward to seeing what is next.” Barnett said the current building is lacking in ad-

part-time,” Bitney said. “If we had more therapists, I believe students would have more access to mental health services, but the university invests a lot of money towards sports and academics.” In the future, Bitney said the university should look towards investing more money in student affairs. Bitney said investing more resources with these programs should be prioritized at Texas State compared to a university like Harvard which, because of its rigorous standards, filters out students who could not mentally perform to that standard. But research indicates the Millennial generation in particular find discussing mental illnesses not a

taboo. Claunch said her colleagues in school were more receptive and open to speaking about mental illnesses. But for now, she remains hopeful and optimistic about her future. Despite the challenges, she overcame the barriers and now has a degree. “If you’re someone who suffers from mental illnesses and want to pursue an education, I would recommend starting at a community college so you can adjust to life as a student and worker,” Claunch said. “School isn’t a race, and I made the mistake to compare myself to my friends who graduated before I did. Focus on your goals, and take your time.”

equate office space, storage, number of restrooms, parking and is almost at capacity for evidence storage. Kyle Police has overflow portables located on west Center Street.

However, Barnett said the portable buildings were meant to be a temporary solution for a couple of years. The department has utilized them for several years now.

Mitchell said the city does not know when a solution will be finalized, but the survey is expected to be returned to city council within eight weeks.

45-Foot Christmas Tree When the St. Johns moved back to Central Texas eight months ago, they knew the tree had to come with them. “The tree has become part of the family, it really has,” Judy said. They had their garage customized in order to accommodate the main pole; in the end, it was still too small. “It’s my husband’s passion to do this. It’s a sym-

bol for the neighborhood,” Judy said. “It makes our neighbors so happy.” At 45-feet-tall, Don said he will probably not make the tree any taller, but said he plans on continuing the tradition. “I’m 77 (years-old), and I’ll keep putting it up as long as I’m able,” Don said. The St. Johns said they plan on having the tree up until after the New Year.
