f all the companionship man experiences in life, few can relate to that of a pet or animal. Whether your preference is a four-legged, wet nosed, brighteyed, bushy tailed buddy, or a scaly, slithery sidekick, the friendship pets can bring to their owners is awe inspiring. In some cases, pet ownership can also save lives. That’s why we at the Hays County Echo put a spotlight this month on the importance of pets and animals in today’s society. Reporter Lesly De Leon takes a

look at a new $1.4 million shelter in the Dripping Springs area that aims to help dogs and cats find forever homes. More and more Americans are spending time, money and resources in caring for their animals. We’ll take a glimpse into the business of taking care of our pets and how much Americans spend on them.

Looking for a place for you and fido to go? We’ve got you covered with a list of pet-friendly locales that cater to man and man’s best friend. Reporter Samantha Smith takes a look at the difference between service and therapy dogs and how they help bring comfort to those in need. Whether you’re ready to go out on the town with your favorite four-legged friend, or preparing to take care of your pet, we at the Hays County Echo have you covered. Pet-based businesses thrive in Hays County BY MOSES LEOS III

U

pon moving to Buda from Austin a few years ago, Craig Barron realized something was missing. As the owner of a Golden Doodle, as well as a Great Pyrenees mix, Barron discovered he had to travel back into town to get the pet products and grooming tools he needed. “The more people I talked to, the more I realized there was a need,” Barron said. “This is a very dog-friendly community.” One thing led to another and Barron later this month will open Shaggy Dog Market, one of the first dog grooming and pet nutrition stores in the Buda/ Kyle area. Barron’s business reflects the increased desire to take care of our fourlegged friends. According to the American Pet Product Association (APPA), spending in the pet industry in the U.S. rose by 74 percent from 1996 to 2016. Pet owners in the U.S. spent over $28 billion in food and just over $5 billion in grooming and boarding services. The APPA estimates Americans spending on their pets to rise by roughly four percent from 2016 to 2017. Barron says he is one of the millions who takes care of their pets on a regular basis. Barron estimates he spends close to $1,500 per year on food, toys and treats for his two dogs. The amount doesn’t include any veterinary costs that may come up. One of the primary reasons Barron believes more people are spending on their pets is the companionship they bring to humans. Pets are a way for some to ward off depression, Barron said. “The joy that we get from having pets as companions is priceless. Dogs are entertaining and they provide companionship,” Barron said. “I think our pets serve a very important purpose in our lives.” He added Americans are more apt to spend money on their pets, no matter the state of the economy. But for Barron, the move to open a business in the Buda area was to address a void he felt needed to be filled. Barron said there are some pet owners who seek healthy dog foods and treats, as opposed to mass-produced food. “People seek out better food and want to take better care of their animals,” Barron said. “All of that affects the longevity of their pets. Better food and better nutrition means longer lives and shows how much we love animals.”

“People seek out better food and want to take better care of their animals ... All of that affects the longevity of their pets. Better food and better nutrition means longer lives and shows how much we love animals.” –Craig Barron, owner of Shaggy Dog Market in Buda

Local business owner Craig Barron spends nearly $1,500 a year on his two dogs Zuzu and Bessie.

More Americans are ensuring their pets receive high quality health care as well. According to APPA, routine annual veterinary expenses made by pet owners averages $250 for dogs and $182 for cats. Robert Amoroso, director of brand and operations at Manchaca

Village Veterinary Care, said advances in technology and diagnostics has made it easier for pet

owners to be more proactive about their pet’s health. Amoroso said the quality of diagnostics has “come so far over the years.” He cited the use of ultrasound technology, which allows veterinarians to catch ailments earlier. Advances in preventative medicine have also led to healthier pets. “It’s not just about X-rays anymore, but the lab results have become more accurate,” Amoroso said. “The ultrasound machine is a beautiful and cost effective way to get a look inside of the body cavity without having to go inside surgically to look.” As a result, pets are living longer lives than ever. Amoroso said he’s seen a 17-year-old lab mix and a 25-year-old cat. However, the advances also mean decreasing costs for veterinary clinics, as pet owners are becoming wiser to how much they are spending to take care of their pets. “More people are spending money on (ultrasounds), but less on the big surgery down the road because of that,” Amoroso said. Pet insurance has slowly become a poplar trend in recent years as well, though it’s grown slowly as people become aware of its availability. Guy Matthews, owner of Kyle Animal Hospital, said discretionary income can dictate how Americans can take care of their pets. He added younger people tend to spend more for health care of their animals. “When we started out 20 years ago, it was a rural area. Now it’s more urbanized and suburbanized since then,” Matthews said. Amoroso said stem cell technology and advances in diagnostics are trends in the future. All of it goes to people’s desire to ensure their pets are well taken care of. “People love animals because they are a part of the family. They take care of them like a child, a very furry child,” Amoroso said.

Bringing comfort to those in need Service and therapy dogs help humans in different ways BY

W

SAMANTHA SMITH

ith the growing popularity and use of service and therapy dogs, along with emotional support animals (ESAs), Hays County residents are seeing more dogs appear at libraries, restaurants, airplanes and even courtrooms. Lillian Sikorski, of Wimberley, who’s a certified dog trainer and member of a therapy team with her dog, Samson, provided insight on the key differences between service and therapy dogs. Sikorski, who used to be a trainer with Service Dogs Inc., said the main difference is that a service dog is specially trained to perform a “vast number of services. Those include picking up items, pushing or pulling a wheelchair, turning on lights, opening and closing doors and going for help if needed, she said. In contrast, a therapy dog is trained to interact with a multitude of individuals other than their owner or handler and is trained to provide comfort to people in various settings, such as nursing homes, courtrooms

page 8 ◆ june | 2017

“Therapy dogs are not allowed everywhere a service dog is allowed and must be given permission to enter specific establishments.” –Lillian Sikorski, certified dog trainer

and libraries. “Therapy dogs are used to comfort people in a variety of situations from calming children in courtrooms, comforting victims of disasters, helping those with (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and visiting those in nursing homes,” Sikorski said. Sikorski said the process to get Samson certified as a therapy dog was extensive. Samson was first evaluated

in various skills and behaviors such as interacting with children and adults, reacting to loud noises and being excessively handled and hugged. According to Austin Dog Alliance, the ideal therapy dog enjoys being petted and handled by a wide variety of people, she said. The dog is also calm and can focus on his or her handler when another dog is nearby and is predictable and controllable in all situations. Sikorski also said therapy dogs must enjoy and tolerate being hugged by children and remain calm around new odors, noises and in strange environments. “Not every dog who took the test to be a therapy dog passed,” Sikorski said. Sikorski said the laws associated with classifications of service dogs and therapy dogs differ when it comes to access to venues with an owner or handler. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) website, state and local government services, as well as public and commercial facilities, must permit service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where members of the public are allowed to go.

This means that service dogs are allowed to accompany people with disabilities to restaurants, inside sporting events, church services, cafeterias, hospitals and anywhere else their owner needs to go. “[T]herapy dogs are not allowed everywhere a service dog is allowed and must be given permission to enter specific establishments,” according to Sikorski. According to psychdogpartners. org, therapy dogs are only allowed into places like hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and libraries by prior agreement. The website adds an ESA is a “pet that provides disability-relieving emotional support to an individual, but is not necessarily trained to do so.” ESA pets must adhere to different guidelines and laws and are mostly granted access in homes and on airplanes, but do not enjoy the full access that service dogs do. Service dog laws also don’t allow ESAs to go in public places where dogs are prohibited. According to the ADA, dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support “don’t qualify as service animals under the ADA.”

F

ar west Hays County is where the Protection for Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) is planning to construct its new facility, with the continued hope of placing four-legged friends in forever homes. PAWS will break ground on the new $1.4 million Hill Country shelter, located in Henly, in June. Construction will begin at that time and the facility is projected to open in about a year. The new shelter was made possible by Shirley Alexander, who donated 39 acres of land west of Dripping Springs ten years ago. Over the next decade, PAWS has been fundraising to build the new shelter. PAWS’s current Kyle facility is 30 years old and is situated on only one acre, limiting space for outdoor activities with dogs. “We’ve patched it and we still make it work, but things start breaking after 30 years,” Melody Hilburn, executive director for PAWS Kyle, said. “We’re very squeezed out.” The new shelter will be 7,698 square

feet, compared to the current 1,400 square foot facility, said Charlotte Biggs, chair of the PAWS future site and capital campaign committee. “We are so excited that we will have more space, which means that we can save and care for additional animals” Biggs said. “We’re putting ourselves in a location where we can service a larger community.” The new shelter’s 39 acres will provide more outdoor space for volunteers to walk and play with dogs. “It will offer a lot more green space to keep the dogs mentally stimulated and healthy,” Hilburn said. The new site will have large walking trails, outdoor play yards and training

areas. “We will have walking trails where volunteers can come and walk the dogs, get them out of the shelter and walk them out among the trees,” Biggs said. “It’s a beautiful environment for them.” The shelter’s outdoor space will also include a memorial garden for people whose pets have passed away. A local artist is donating a mosaic board where people can hang their pet’s tag, Hilburn said. “It’ll be a very nice, quiet, sequestered type of place for people to go to reflect and visit,” Biggs said. The building will include a dog wing, a cat wing, and in-house spay and neuter clinic suites. Some of the infrastructure, including

electric, has already been put in, Hilburn said. Recruiting for staff and volunteers will begin about 90 days before the new shelter opens its doors, Biggs said. “We will be keeping the Kyle location open, so we know that we’ve got to fill the new facility with full staffing and volunteers,” Biggs said. Once the foundation is in, PAWS will host a tent party to get the community involved, Hilburn said. “We’re hoping to get the community support we need,” Hilburn said. PAWS is asking for donations to fund the facility’s needs, such as appliances and dog and cat kennels. Donations can be made through its website. Approximately $1.1 million of the $1.4 million needed have been funded, Biggs said. The new shelter will be a Hill Country campus, Hilburn said. The new location will allow PAWS to serve communities it previously could not reach. “It really brings us to the place where we can truly be PAWS Shelter of Central Texas because it expands our capacity to reach additional communities,” Biggs said.
