ARC-Center Street
Clinic expands it mission to new Kyle location BY ANITA MILLER Health care and its delivery has taken a turn for the better in Central Texas because of Austin Regional Clinic (ARC) and the model of service it has perfected over the last 40 years. “ARC has always built its clinics with families in mind; how we can make it more convenient for families to get the health care they need,” said Lynae Harrison, director of clinic operation. ARC’s newest location is on Center Street in Kyle and that’s no accident. “Our original Kyle location in Plum Creek opened in 2009, and has been extremely successful for years, but still more primary care providers were needed in response to the growth and the demand. There was a long

waiting period for patients to be seen for OB/Gyn care as well. This led directly to our model of combining Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and OB/ Gyn care into one location at ARC-Center Street. We opened ARC-Center Street on Sept. 1 with two Pediatricians, Dr. Amanda Soza and Dr. Thu “Stephanie” Nguyen, as well as one Family Medicine physician, Dr. Amanda Schultz. Just this month we added an OB/Gyn physician,
Dr. Shao-Chun Rose ChangJackson. In January, our second OB/Gyn physician, Dr. Drew Benac, will start seeing patients at ARC-Center Street. The clinic also has on-site lab and ultrasound. With all of our physicians and services available, ARC-Center Street is ready and excited to serve the Kyle community with health care from pre-conception to senior care,” she continued. But ARC’s model is not yet complete.
“There are a number of specialties that ARC offers in Austin and other suburban markets that can be brought to the Kyle area, as well as expanding some of the specialties available at ARC Kyle Plum Creek to Center Street for added patient convenience,” she said. The driving concept is simple. “ARC has helped shape the landscape of health care in Central Texas since our inception in 1980, Harrison said. “Dr. Norman Chenven started ARC with the goal of providing quality, affordable health care to as many patients as possible. Fast forward to today and that is still the driving force behind everything we do. Taking care of our patients is our passion and our mission. So
new patients to ARC-Center Street aren’t just joining one location, they are joining the ARC family. That family now includes 29 clinics in 12 cities in Central Texas, taking care of more than 530,000 area residents. “There are two reasons that ARC has been successfully providing health care to Central Texas for 40 years – our patients and our employees. Caring for our patients pushes us every day to do better, and our patients’ loyalty is something we are honored to have received. Our employees are, simply put, the best. It is common for patients to develop strong relationships with not only their doctor, but also the nurse, front desk or lab person they see every time they come in. Our employees know that our number one priority is patient care, and that we couldn’t do it without their tireless work every day. “We are very excited to continue serving the greater Kyle community with our second location on Center Street.”
Shao-Chun Rose Chang-Jackson, MD Austin Regional Clinic is happy to announce that Shao-Chun Rose ChangJackson, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology, has joined the team at ARC Center Street. “I first became interested in women’s health after my first-grade teacher developed ovarian cancer,” says Dr. Chang-Jackson. “Due to her strong will and her physicians’ dedication to treating her illness, she was able to survive an unheard-of amount of time with her diagnosis. I knew from that experience that I wanted to be able to treat all of my female patients with as much care and compassion as she received from her physicians.”

Prop A preserving the nature of Hays County BY MEGAN WEHRING Hays County residents pride themselves on living in an area lush with rivers, springs and unique landscapes. From the spring-fed San Marcos River to the hiking trails at Jacob’s Well, to the Violet Crown Trail from Kyle and Buda, the county is surrounded by natural beauty. It was up to the voters this year to approve the $75 million Proposition A to fund new parks, preserving these natural areas and protecting open spaces in the county. The Hays County Commissioners Court called a November 2020 bond election back in August. A 10-member citizen committee, Hays County Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission (POSAC), recommended 16 projects to the commissioners court ranked as Tier 1 and Tier 2. “Hays County has a lot of beautiful spots in it,” Karen Ford, owner of WaterPR, said. “I think this bond will go a long way to protect special places that people can enjoy for a long time going forward forever.” While some residents may be concerned about the taxpayer impact, Ford explained that issuing these bonds would not raise the tax rate in Hays County. “The $75 million worth of bonds over the next four or five years would not impact the county’s tax rate,” Ford told the Hays Free Press/ News-Dispatch. “There’s not really a tax implication for this bond other than it's something the county can pay for through its growth and
through financing other debt.” Among the highly-recommended projects are Sentinel Peak Park and Reserve, Cape’s Fishing Pond and Violet Crown Trail. The county wants to use the additional funds to create more recreation, connectivity and public access for each of these projects. Formerly owned by the Boy Scouts of America, the Sentinel Peak Park and Reserve will primarily serve as a Golden cheeked Warbler habitat preserve and river access, according to Ford. “The county knew that [Sentinel Peak Park] would be a beautiful spot for the public to be able to enjoy the Blanco River,” Ford said. “The county had the opportunity to pick up 500 acres there, giving access to citizens to go down and enjoy the river.” A previous poll by two nonprofit organizations found that 71% of Hays County voters would be in support of the proposed bond, despite the economic stress from the coronavirus pandemic. Some have also expressed their concern about passing a $75 million bond during a pandemic, but Ford said it could not have come at a better time. “People started going outdoors and enjoying nature,” Ford said. “Having places to go that are spread around the county is a benefit to everyone at any time. But I think what we saw is that people started enjoying and participating in the outdoors and nature a little more in the last eight months.”

ARC pediatricians offer Cheat Sheet for children’s health BY ANITA MILLER Although it can sometimes seem like a chore just to get your child to the pediatrician’s office, time spent there is too valuable to waste. Enter the cheat sheet. Amanda Soza, M.D. and Stepanie Nguyen, D.O., want to help. Both treat children from birth through the teenage years at the new Austin Regional Clinic location that just opened in September on Center Street in Kyle, and they’re eager to share their advice about things parents should ask their child’s pediatrician. Broken into age groups: infants and toddlers, school age, kindergarten and elementary grades, adolescents and teens, they spoke with the Hays Free Press and News Dispatch for Living in Hays about a number of topics parents should ask about.
INFANTS AND TODDLERS When can my child eat solids and drink water? For little babies, it is advised to breastfeed if possible or if not, feed formula. “At around six months of age,” Nguyen said, “you can begin to introduce solids, beginning with soft baby cereals.” Some babies may be ready before then, but that’s a call to be made only after consulting with the doctor. A little bit of water can usually be introduced about the same time, she added. Is my child meeting milestones for growth and development? Early and frequent visits to the pediatrician can assure parents. “We encourage babies come in frequently,” Nguyen said. “We want to meet you and the baby in the first three to five days, then at two weeks, at two months, at four months, six months, nine months, one year and every year after that.” It’s also important to keep vaccinations updated. How do I help my child fall asleep and stay asleep? Hygiene and habits are key. Babies should sleep on their backs in uncluttered cribs – no pillows or other bedding, and should be kept warm. “Babies wake up frequently until about three months when
they begin to sleep through the night,” Nguyen says. “Have them fall asleep in their cribs, not in your arms, so that when they wake up in the middle of the night they are not startled that they are not in mom’s or dad’s arms.” What are signs that my child is ready to be toilet trained? “Potty training can start at two or three,” Nguyen advised, adding that this is an occasion that the child can supply clues. “It may be when they start telling you, ‘I want to wear big boy or big girl underwear.’ It may be when they can stay dry for two hours. It can be when they know they are dirty. They can let you know.”
SCHOOL AGE How much screen time should my child be getting? “We recommend two hours or less, and that’s for all ages,” Soza said. Given virtual learning in the age of COVID-19, she clarified, two hours of recreational time on a computer, tablet or other device. “That’s difficult, but it’s important.” Instead of online playing video games, encourage school age childen to get out with friends and develop relationships. While children can interact with friends on platforms like Zoom, a healthy alternative is playing games with family and activities like reading to each other. What is the best way to discipline my child? In making that decision, Soza said it’s important that there is consistency among parents and caregivers, and to not give in to tantrums. Taking away things as a punishment can wait until the child is old enough to understand. Foremost is to make sure the child understands that there are consquences to their actions. What vaccines does my child need now and in the future? Required vaccinations are recommended on a set schedule by the state of Texas. “Most of them are fairly early,” Soza said. “Make sure they get their MMR and varicella before they go to school.” Required vaccinations are generally given at age four, 11 and 16. Don’t forget an annual flu shot.
ADOLESCENTS How do I prepare my child for puberty? “There’s no great way,” says Soza. Still, it’s important to initiate conversations when their bodies begin to change. “Tell them it’s OK, that you went through it too, that you know it feels weird but it is to be expected. If you can, talk to them before the changes begin ... Make sure they know how to ask questions, if they know the nomenclature. Remember, we’re always there to help you with that.” How do I best keep my child safe? Of all the questions parents have, this is one of the most overarching. “That one is hard,” Nguyen admits, because it covers such a range of different topics from being wary of strangers to the dangers inherent when we go online. Make sure they know not to talk to stangers and to not get in the car with strangers. Make sure they have the parent’s name and number, for example to give to a police officer. And don’t neglect cyber security.” What is the HPV vaccine and is it safe? The vaccine for human papillomavirus is safe and should be given to boys and girls long before they even think about having sex, the doctors agree. HPV can lead to multiple types of cancers and, if given early, is only two shots.
TEENAGERS How do you prevent and manage acne? The former is preferable to the latter if possible, and starts with a good cleaning regime – face washing in the morning and night, but not so often as to dry out the skin. “Start the habit early,” Soza advises. “If it starts to get out of control, talk to a doctor.” Advise the teen not to pick at an outbreak which could lead to infection, and know that there are treatments available, both over the counter and by prescription. How do you screen for mental health disorders? Open communications. Teens are under high levels of stress and
COVID adds even more. “Let them know it’s OK to ask questions and make sure they know they can talk to you. When they can talk to a friend it can make a big difference, but sometimes having a friend isn’t enough. Sometimes you need to talk to an adult.” Parents should be alert to things like teens not being interested in things they used to enjoy, and take notice if grades begin to fall. What is the best way to prevent risky behaviors? The teenage years are fraught with hazards and risky behavior is among the biggest. “It’s a difficult conversation,” Soza said. “No one wants to think about a 14-year-old having sex,” but it does happen. “Let them know you are there for them. Make sure they know they can always ask us. A doctor or counselor can sometimes open the lines of communication. And be prepared,” the doctors said specifically to parents, “when a child is 12 or 13 we are going to ask to speak to them alone.” The pandemic has only increased the challenges all parents face. But it also is providing opportunities, for example for families to engage with each other. It can lead to increased use of drugs and/ or alcohol, something that is seen in both teens and adults. Diet and weight is another area of concern.
EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR ALL AGES Fall weather in Central Texas is usually beautiul, and now is a good time for the family to enjoy it together. Soza and Nguyen recommends 60 minutes of physical activity each day and while that sounds like a lot, it’s no more than teens involved in sports are used to. Play basketball in the driveway, take a walk in the fresh air, do a home workout, even on Zoom. Dance. Remember that it is harder for many children to focus without the structure of school. Be alert to snacking issues. “We are excited about the opportunity to reach out and meet the community,” the doctors said.

Branch Manager NMLS #224542 I have been in the mortgage industry for over 21 years, and spent 15 years in finance prior to that. This has equipped me with a unique skillset that I use to help my clients achieve the dream of home ownership, particularly when it comes to credit situations. I have developed expertise in finding solutions for those who didn’t think home ownership was a possibility. I am passionate about maintaining open communication with my clients, keeping honesty and integrity at the forefront. No two loan transactions are the same. I recognize this and enjoy the challenge. Whether an individual is moving across the country for a new job or an elderly couple is downsizing after years in their home, I find it just as rewarding to see my clients receive a set of keys to their new home knowing I had a hand in the process. I moved to the Austin area in 2010 after spending 25 years in Chicago. When I'm not helping buyers navigate the maze of homeownership, you'll find me navigating my way around the golf course! The weather in Austin allows me to golf and walk my dog Maxine year round. If you're buying a new home or considering refinancing your existing one, it would be my honor to assist you. 14 | Living in Hays | December 2020
