TDS

Committed to the environment

A

continued commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability is the goal for Creedmoor-based Texas Disposal Systems (TDS), which in 2018 is celebrating its 40th year of operation. Utilizing a host of methods to recycle and divert waste, TDS aims to keep the Lone Star State as beautiful as ever. “We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been able to continue the path of sustainability over the past 40 years and trying to stay ahead of the curve in the way of environmental stewardship,” said Wendy Bradley, a representative with TDS. Over the past four decades, TDS has helped area communities and schools manage and divert waste to beneficial uses. But TDS, an award-winning Type 1 municipal solid waste landfill, operates as more than just a waste pickup provider. TDS strives for environmental preservation and uses the most environmentally conscious processes for waste and disposal. The company’s holistic approach and wide range of services have also changed the face of the resource management industry. Playing a vital role is TDS’ Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which processes 25 tons of un-separated recyclables each hour. Once items are processed, materials that are recycled can then be packaged for resale as commodities to the public. In addition, TDS also provides an alternative to the disposal of organic waste with its large-scale compost facility. TDS’ landfill is also Texas’ first totally integrated facility of its kind that incorporates solid waste disposal,

compost production and recycling. All of it is done in an effort to minimize waste. Independent and family-owned, TDS continues to push the boundaries of innovation by using new technologies in its resource recovery method. “TDS is driving innovation forward by looking for ways to divert material otherwise intended for disposal and repurpose it for new life,” said Stacy Schmitt, Director of Communications. TDS aims to impact changes in the local community as well through several programs it offers. The Green School and Green Event Solutions programs implement composting and recycling at schools and at community events. TDS’ eco-academy program provides training and educational materials for staff and students at campuses. That extends to showing staff and students how to recycle and divert compostable items and why it’s important. Raising broader public awareness on the importance of minimizing waste is TDS’ goal as well, which values its role to sustain resources for future generations. As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, and in honor of Earth Day in April, TDS is giving residents a collection of tips and tricks to stay as sustainable as possible. See page 16. Tips include how to live green on a budget, learning ways to become green-friendlier at home to even how to develop eco-friendly cooking habits. All of it goes to TDS’ focus on educating the public on how to make a difference in keeping Texas clean. “We consider it an honor to play a role in protecting our environment in our home state of Texas,” Bradley said.

A family company that’s grown with Buda

G

etting into the real estate industry was a natural fit for Buda resident John Sanford. Soon after earning an advertising degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Sanford used real estate as an outlet to help people and businesses while growing a successful company. Over 20 years later, Sanford, along with his son J.D., continue to contribute to Buda’s sustainable growth with John B. Sanford Realtors. John and J.D., who have more than 40-plus years in real estate negotiations, offer residential sales on both large lot suburban and new construction homes. They also specialize in both seller and buyer representation, along with commercial sales and leasing for all businesses.

That includes office, retail, industrial and specialty uses.

Part of John Sanford Realtors’ lasting impact is the company’s

respect, honesty and professionalism to their clients. John has also been active in the Buda community, including serving on the Buda Planning and Zoning Commission, Hays County Historical Commission and Hays County Parks Board. Along with working on major developments, John Sanford plans to keep working to bring business to the area to help Buda grow in a sustainable way, while keeping the community character in place. That stems from John’s upbringing in the small coastal town of Palacios, Texas. “We’re a family company that has been a part of Buda’s growth from a small town and we’ll be around for a long time,” John Sanford said.

Arnolds understand community A-Line Outdoor Power is part of the Austin-based Arnold Oil family of companies, but each location strives to become involved in their own local community. According to Arnold Oil marketing manager Kat Leising, Arnold Oil began in Corpus Christi in 1939. Since then, the company’s various lines and branches have expanded all over Texas, but continue to be family-owned. Arnold Oil is on its fourth generation of the Arnold family, Leising said. The current owner, Jim Arnold, is a grandson of the founder, and his children are heavily involved in the day-to-day operations at the company. “What really sets us apart is that we are Texas-born and Texas-bred,” Leising said. “It’s a local auto shop, it’s not a big corporation. It’s important to support Texas brands.” With locations in both Buda and Dripping Springs, A-Line Outdoor power

offers customers mowers, blowers, trimmers, small engine repairs and more. “We have such a huge variety of offerings in our stores, as well as personable people who will help customers and have a knowledge of the brands we carry,” Leising said. Since 1977, when Jim Arnold began his Austin location, the Central Texas branch of Arnold Oil has grown from two employees to hundreds. Those two original employees, Jim Arnold and Steve Voges, who were born and raised in Hays County, both still work at the company. Arnold serves as CEO and president and Voges is vice president Besides Arnold Oil’s local Texas roots, customer service sets A-Line apart from competitors, Leising said. “Our employees are there to help customers with anything, from what size chainsaw they need or what to do if their lawnmowers it isn’t working right,” she

said. “They’re very wellversed in all the outdoor power equipment we carry.” While A-Line Outdoor Power has retail locations available to the average consumer, the company also does business with auto shops to provide them with quality parts and accessories. Arnold Oil participates in events to raise money and donations for local food

banks, Toys for Tots and other nonprofits in each location’s market. Last year, Arnold Oil raised $2,000 for Toys for Tots, a group that distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy Christmas gifts. “We’d like to invite the community in to our stores to meet us and get a feel for what we’re all about,” Leising said.

‘Great opportunity’ in growth, says Torrey

W

hen owner Chris Torrey founded Elite Realty in 2014, his goal was to provide unmatched customer service and experience from more than a decade in the Hays County real estate market. “I really just wanted to do things my way,” Torrey said.” I saw a lot of opportunity. I had to start my own business. It just really inspired me to take the next step to get my brokers license.”
Torrey received his brokers license in October 2014, and since then, has mostly practiced in Kyle, Buda and San Marcos. Having got his start in real estate in 2009 at an

apartment locator in San Marcos, his knowledge of the area gives him a step up in meeting his clients’ needs, he said.

“The growth and opportunity in our area is great. We couldn’t be in a better spot,” Torrey said. According to city staff, Kyle’s population could reach 100,000 in the next 20 years. “Knowing the area and being experienced in the area plays a key factor for real estate brokers, because you can let them know about the development in the area for the past 10 years,” Torrey said. “That’s the experience that a local realtor can provide, more insight.”

ne could say the real estate bug bit Tiffany Roberts at an early age. When she was younger, Roberts recalls helping her father improve and show off rental and investment properties, which was his hobby. It was the variety of the job that piqued Roberts’ interest in the field. “No two days were the same,” Roberts said. Years later, along with a bachelor’s degree in finance, Roberts built upon that interest to found the Butler Property Company Texas, a full-service real estate brokerage group that’s been in business for 10 years. Services provided by Butler Property Company include residential and commercial buying, selling and investment properties, along with leasing and

property management. Butler Property Company strives to give a high-level of service, along with using their certified negotiation skills, to ensure each client gets the best deal on their home. Along with Roberts, who is a Certified Negotiations Expert, is one additional Realtor who works in Hays County. “We know it is often the largest purchase a family can make and we walk them through the process step by step, never pressuring our clients to make a hasty decision,” Roberts said. 40 Ways to Celebrate Earth Month with TDS At TDS, we consider it an honor to play a role in protecting the environment of our home state of Texas. We as neighbors and fellow Texans depend on its natural resources – and they, in turn, depend on us to treat them with love and respect. Earth Month kicks off on April 1 and TDS is celebrating by challenging Central Texans to help make our planet and communities cleaner and greener. We developed a list of 40 eco-friendly tips and activities to promote sustainability – at home, work or school – while also commemorating the company’s 40th anniversary this year. From the beginning, environmental responsibility has been at the core of everything we do, as we seek to divert waste to beneficial uses and minimize landfill use. So this Earth Month and beyond, please join us in taking care of Texas like she takes care of all of us.

In 2014 we produced

258 million tons

of waste in the U.S.

Each person generates 4.4 lbs of waste each day. (Source: EPA)

35% of this waste was recycled or composted. (Source: EPA)
