DSISD names new director of safety BY MEGAN WEHRING
DRIPPING SPRINGS – Following suit of other school districts, the Dripping Springs ISD board of trustees named Sirenna Cumberland as the new director of safety on July 25. Bringing nearly 30 years of experience to the district, Cumberland is a law enforcement professional. She has served as a patrol deputy and investigator in Hays County – while also spending six years as a school resource officer at DSISD from 2013 to 2019. During her previous time at DSISD, Cumberland provided security and safety to students and staff. She investigated criminal matters occurring on school grounds, conducted school security inspections, collaborated with administration and teachers to develop crisis plans, and presented proactive education on topics such as digital citizenship, anti-drug, and appropriate device usage. For the past three years, Cumberland has served as a training specialist for the Texas School Safety Center in San Marcos, working with both public schools and the law enforcement community conducting mandated training and ensuring all school-based law enforcement curriculum is updated and consistent. In her new role, Cumberland will provide strategic direction and leadership for DSISD’s safety and security program. “We are thrilled to welcome Sirenna back to DSISD,” said Superintendent Holly MorrisKuentz. “She was an exceptional SRO for us and her most recent experience in training for the Texas School Safety Center really set her apart as the right professional to lead our safety and security program. She brings excellent experience and expertise together with deep relationships with local law enforcement and our local community. I appreciate the board’s full support to bring this important role to DSISD.” Cumberland is slated to begin her new position before the school year starts in August and is expected to report directly to Morris-Kuentz.

SATISFY YOUR SWEET TOOTH
Business Spotlight: Sweet Cakes 4 U BY AMIRA VAN LEEUWEN
BUDA – What started out as a hobby is now a dream come true for Dolores Diaz. Sweet Cakes 4 U, located in the heart of Buda, is a family-owned and women-owned cake shop that sells an assortment of cakes, cupcakes, bars and cookies. Diaz has lived in the city of Buda for 30 years and started baking during her time working for the State of Texas in workers’ compensation. “I would take stuff to work, and then my coworkers started asking if I could bake cakes for them for their special occasions, so I started doing that,” Diaz said. Baking for her coworkers, plus working a full-time job, kept Diaz very busy. After five years of working for the state, she decided to quit her job and open her own business. But what inspired Diaz was her two daughters. “I wanted to be with [my daughters] more, and I felt that if I had my own business, they could be with me here, and I could set my own hours,” Diaz said. Diaz said she looked around for places to rent and found a building on Main Street, but the facility had already been leased out to a boutique for the following six months. After patiently waiting, Diaz was en route to owning her own business – which later opened in February 2013. As a growing business,

Owner and baker Dolores Diaz stands at the front of her store. Sweet Cakes 4 U has faced multiple challenges, including figuring out how to make the most out of its small building space and retaining employees. Diaz said the building space was enough initially, but as her business grew, she had to get more refrigeration and bakery cases. However, unlike many other small businesses across the country, Diaz said the COVID-19 pandemic positively impacted Sweet Cakes 4 U, despite temporarily

closing. In March 2020, Diaz said the bakery temporarily closed for five weeks because it was “hard to come by supplies.” Although she has multiple vendors, finding some of the local items Diaz would need to purchase was challenging. “We were going all over the place looking for stuff, and I just felt that it was too much,” Diaz said. After five weeks, Diaz said Sweet Cakes 4 U reopened with a drive-thru window that attracted a lot of attention. “We had lines from our front of the store out to the entrance going into Nate's,” Diaz said. “It was nice to see, again, the community supporting us [by] coming back,” she said. Despite not living in Buda, customer Amanda Loredo-Reyes is more than happy to make a short

Sweet Cakes 4 U's most popular product is cakes by the slice, but Diaz’s favorite product to make is the layered cakes because she likes the way it comes together. “It's an art,” Diaz said. “We bake the layers, we make the fillings, we build the cakes and then they get frosted and decorated.” Although unsure of Sweet Cakes 4 U’s future, Diaz said she would like to have the opportunity to expand her business. “I don’t really know what our future is right now, but it gives me joy when I leave the shop, sometimes a little early, and see a line of people out there, and I’m like, ‘That’s why I’m in business, that’s why I keep going,’” Diaz said.

COUNTY PREPARES FOR ELECTION SEASON
Commissioners add eastern voting location BY BRITTANY ANDERSON
HAYS COUNTY — Eastern Hays county is getting another early voting location, marking the county’s 14th spot to early vote for the upcoming November election. The Hays County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the county’s early voting schedule and locations on July 19, adding the Hays CISD transportation building in Uhland off High Road to the list. Simon Middle School previously served as the east side’s early voting location, but due to heightened safety concerns following the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde in May, the school was removed. Hays County elections administrator Jennifer Doinoff said that Simon MS was not willing to let the county use the school as an early voting location, but that the Hays CISD transportation building
could be used. The item was met with much public comment, with many stressing that consistency in locations and accessibility is important, and that every vote counts. “Changing the location on a frequent basis as a knee-jerk response based on the latest whims of developers is not effective, and has no long-term objective,” resident Shannon Fitzpatrick said. “People want to know where they can consistently, physically and safely vote.” One emailed comment noted that taking away Simon MS as an early voting location removes opportunities for students to see democracy in action. “I strongly feel that the younger children are exposed to civic engagement, the higher the likelihood they’ll turn into regular voters in adulthood,” the resident said. Hays County Democratic party chair Mark Trahan
said he looked at the numbers from the most recent primary election and found that in the eastern portion of the county, there were 422 votes on election day, making up 3.23% of the county-wide percentage of votes — warranting another location as “access is important.” Hays County Republican party chair Bob Parks viewed the situation differently, however. Parks said that because “nine of the early voting locations are immediately along the I-35 corridor” and that many people in the eastern part of the county already travel that way daily, adding another location isn’t needed. “If we’re going to do that philosophy, to be fair to all of the people in the county which each of you [the commissioners] represent, I suggest that we put early voting locations out on FM 32 close to Devil’s Backbone, on FM 1826 by the Travis County line, out in Henly and on Mount Sharp Road, Pump Station
Road and Fischer Store Road,” Parks said. “Because all of those people have to travel further to get to a voting station right now than anybody does in Uhland.” Pct. 4 Commissioner Walt Smith also reiterated that Hays county is already running more early voting locations than required by the Texas Election Code, which only requires one location for early voting per precinct. The commissioners still unanimously approved adding the Uhland location, as concerns with possible voter suppression are heightened both in the area and around the state and country. Hays county is a ‘vote center county,’ meaning all registered voters can cast a ballot at any location that is open during early voting or on election day. Early voting days and hours were approved by the commissioners for Oct. 24 through Oct. 30 on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 7

It's back-to-school time
It’s that time of year again when kids start whining, and parents are smiling. Teachers are fussing because of all the worthless hours of training that some politicians deem essential, and building contractors are apologizing for not finishing the construction of the new elementary school. Yup, it’s back-to-school time, and soon I won’t be able to turn left out of my driveway between the hours of 7 to 9 a.m. Not all parents are happy about their children heading back to school so soon, especially after receiving the lengthy list of school supplies their little darlings will need this school year. I saw the list for children entering kindergarten and I was shocked! I reckon many of these items are essential, but does a 5-year-old really need composition books? When was the last time you read a novel written by someone who is still fascinated by boogers? This list also included washable markers, dry-erase makers and
FROM THE CROW’S NEST BY CLINT YOUNTS
highlighters. When I was five, I recall receiving some harsh punishment for creating a mural on my bedroom wall. I still shiver every time I see a Marks-aLot. I remember getting a new box of crayons to take to school, but we definitely never had markers. Speakin’ of crayons, how many of y’all were given the box of just eight colors. Some of the rich kids brought those big boxes of 64 crayons, and I was so envious. I had no idea what a periwinkle was, but it sure is a pretty color. And to make matters worse, half of my crayons has Scotch tape wrapped around them. Except my white crayon. Who ever uses a white crayon? Today’s list of school supplies for elementary school includes a mess of #2 pencils. How many pencils
does a 5-year-old need? I reckon if his nickname is Beaver, he might go through a box of pencils. Who remembers those pencils we used back in 1963? They were as thick as a fire log. We had to get our fathers to sharpen them with an ax. I’m not sure why they were so big, but I think teachers wanted something that we couldn’t stick up our noses. Today’s kindergarteners have to take several bottles of Elmer’s glue. Remember what we used back in 1963? No, not tree sap. That was what the kids used in ’61. We had that delicious paste. One reason I failed art class was because I ran out of paste on the 3rd day of school, and I was told I didn’t poop until the 10th day of school. Let’s get back to those composition books. In the first grade, we used a Big Chief tablet. This is what I used to learn how to write my name and to draw pictures with my seven crayons. The school nurse threw away my white one after extracting it from my left nostril. No composition
book for us back then. Just a simple tablet. In this day and age, I doubt you could take a Big Chief tablet to school. Little tykes these days get to tote their supplies to school in fancy backpacks. We didn’t own backpacks back then, probably since they were all used up during WWII. Back in 1963, on the night before the first day of school, my mother would gather up my new box of 8 crayons, my Big Chief tablet, a bottle of yummy paste, scissors so dull they couldn’t cut through fog, and a pencil that looked like it was supplied by Paul Bunyan, and put them all in a Piggly Wiggly grocery bag. Yup, times have sure changed since I went to elementary school. Back then, parents supported the teachers, kids said the Pledge of Allegiance, and you didn’t spend a fortune on school supplies. I am a little curious about something, though. What does an ENT charge to remove a scented dry-erase from your nostril? I’m asking for a friend.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR On Tuesday July 26th, 2022, Buda City Hall Planning & Zoning Commission hosted a public meeting regarding the Persimmon Tract on FM 967. Milestone Builders presented their plans on the proposed future construction of a subdivision. Many neighbors from the Coves of Cimarron, Cimarron Park, Creekside Park, and other surrounding subdivisions came to the city council meeting to speak against the proposed build. The neighbors gave heartfelt speeches about how the build would adversely affect them. After outlining their concerns about traffic, water, and wastewater issues, forest preservation, noise, safety and overcrowding concerns, Milestone Builders demanded a vote. On behalf of all the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods, I would like to give a gigantic thank you to all of the Planning & Zoning commissioners who
voted down the proposal. Much gratitude to them for overwhelmingly voting against Milestone and protecting our neighborhoods. The next day, Wednesday July 27th, a huge wildfire broke out on the proposed property and many of us were terrified or extremely concerned. I would also like to give a special shout out and thank you to all of the fire departments who so quickly responded and contained the fire. Thanks to the Planning & Zoning Commission for listening and acting on their voter’s behalf, and the heroic quick response of Hays fire departments, you are helping the residents of Buda to Breathe Easy with a huge sigh of relief. So, to the neighbors who showed up or spoke out, Planning & Zoning commissioners who had our back, and the fire fighters who saved the day, thanks so much, you all rock! Sincerely, Mary Harsh

As a switch-hitting average in 140 games infielder for a club at before McGraw called him Sherman, he was hitting up for the last week of the .362 when Dick Kinsella caught him in action. One season. Four singles, two doubles and three triples look was all it took for the in 26 at-bats convinced New York Giants scout the Giants skipper that to label Youngs a “can’tthe hustling Texan he miss” prospect, and on
nicknamed “Pep” was ready for the big leagues. Any other rookie his age might have been awed by a roster that boasted half a dozen future Hall of Famers but not the confident kid from the Lone Star State. Sticking to the southpaw side of the plate, he soon proved he was a Giant in his own right by batting .302 in 1918, .311 in 1919 and .351 in 1920, second only to fellow Texan Rogers Hornsby. From the beginning, Youngs was one of the most exciting players in the game. A terror on the base path, he broke up countless double plays with bodyblock slides. His defensive feats were the talk of baseball and bordered on the unbelievable. On one memorable occasion, Youngs started a rundown between third base and home plate with a perfect throw, sprinted in from right field to join the chase
and tagged the runner out. In Game Three of the 1921 World Series against the hated Yankees, Youngs made history with two hits in the same inning. The Giants went on to win the best-of-nine championship and the following year humiliated the Yankees in four games with a .375 contribution from their right-fielder. The first sign that something was not quite right with Youngs came in the 1924 World Series that the Giants lost to the Washington Senators. After posting a career-best batting average of .356, he experienced a post-season slump going five for 27. Youngs assured McGraw, with whom he had developed a close fatherson relationship, that it was nothing more than fatigue. He promised to spend the off-season sleeping and be raring to go in the spring. But in 1925 Youngs

struggled to just stay on the field, as he battled a variety of health problems ranging from viral infections to undiagnosed stomach trouble. His performance at the plate dropped 92 points from the previous year, and he lost more than a step or two in the outfield. Youngs was clearly a sick man, when he reported for duty in 1926. Yet somehow he summoned the strength to play in 95 games and hit an amazing .306. By August, he was 15 pounds lighter than opening day and as weak as a kitten. At McGraw’s insistence, he went home to San Antonio where doctors at last figured out what was wrong. He was suffering from an inflammation of the kidneys called Bright’s Disease, and there was no cure. At Youngs’ funeral in October 1927, the most moving eulogy was given by his heartbroken manager. “He was the greatest outfielder I ever saw on a ball field,” McGraw said mournfully. “The game was never over with Young until the last man was out.” Until the day he retired, John McGraw kept two framed photographs in his office. The first was of his immortal pitcher Christy Mathewson and the second was of the surrogate son he had hoped would someday take his place. Comparisons are often made between Lou Gehrig and Ross Youngs because both ballplayers went to an early grave. The big difference is that, unlike the beloved Yankee, the ballof-fire from Texas never got the chance to say good-bye. Judy, his loving wife of 65 years, predeceased him in September of 2021. George was born in Linton, Indiana on March 23, 1938. He was one of four siblings who grew up in tough economic times as many experienced in that era. He would tell often tell childhood stories about not having an indoor bath and bathing in a washtub

or, when it rained, taking a shower from the rain running off the roof and walking to school in the snow with a potato in his pocket to keep his hands warm. His childhood hardships shaped him into a grateful and humble man. He was a man of many stories and joyful memories. George and Judy had one son “Billy,” a daughterin-law “Cathy” and two grandchildren, “Emily” and “Matthew”. George and Judy married on June 10, 1956. They lived in Indiana for many years until they had Billy. Shortly thereafter, they uprooted and moved to Spring, Texas, where they stayed for a short time before landing in Alice, Texas, where they stayed for 32 years. During that time, George was active in local community groups and their church. Additionally, he participated with Billy in the usual rites of passage such as Boy Scouts and high school football. In 2003 they took a leap of faith and
followed Billy, Cathy and the grandkids to Emporia, Kansas for two years then eventually moved back to Kyle, Texas where they would stay for the rest of their lives. For many years, George worked at Negley Elementary school where he was known to all as “Mr. George.” In his later years, he worked as a crossing guard, which he absolutely loved. He knew all the kids by name and greeted them warmly everyday as they came and went. In 2018 George received two awards: Hays ISD Ambassador of the Year and Auxiliary Employee of the Year. He could not have been prouder to have his work and dedication recognized. George was such a friendly, sociable man. Even as his health declined, he could be found on the front porch in his rocker talking to neighbors and sharing a cup of coffee. He never met a stranger. We believe that those who were lucky enough to hear his
stories and one-liners were richer for it. George is survived by his two brothers, Dick and Frank, and his sister Marie Rucker. The family would like to recognize all the friends and neighbors of Plum Creek and the teachers and staff at Negley Elementary school. You all are the definition of community. Your eyes, your time, your energy, and your support has not gone unnoticed. We thank you and appreciate you more than you know. Bless you all! George was a kind, loving and generous man. He was truly “salt of the earth.” He was loved and will be greatly missed by us all. Many have asked about services. At this time, the family does not plan to have any formal event. We ask that you remember him fondly and have a cup of coffee with a friend. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to a charity of your choice.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Dean Trombley of Kyle, Texas. David was born to parents Helen and Dean Trombley on September 12th, 1958 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan and passed away in his home due to complications with MS on June 11th, 2022. He is survived by his two children, Jacob and Lauren Trombley.
David shared exciting stories of the mischief he and his 8 siblings would get into growing up in Michigan. He was adventurous and fearless. David enjoyed playing softball, riding his motorcycle, doing crosswords and sudoku, and was always on the hunt for a genuinely good horror movie. He was a quiet tinkerer who excelled at working with his hands and
could creatively solve any problem. David's family will always cherish their memories of his creativity, compassion, and unique sense of humor. A memorial mass will be held in David's honor at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1100 Main Street, Buda, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 5 at 10 am. The family invites anyone who knew David or his family to join.

Serving in the Navy means Torres is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy provides a maritime presence that benefits both us and our allies,” Torres said. “What we do with presence and deterrence is essential for global commerce to operate unencumbered.” With more than 90% of all trade traveling by sea and 95% of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States are directly linked to a strong and ready Navy.
Four priorities will focus efforts on sailors, readiness, capabilities, and capacity, according to Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday. “For 245 years, in both calm and rough waters, our Navy has stood the watch to protect the homeland, preserve freedom of the seas, and defend our way of life,” Gilday said. “The decisions and investments we make this decade will set the maritime balance of power for the rest of this century. We can accept nothing less than success.” Hosted by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC 2022 will be led by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, who will serve as Combined Task Force (CTF) commander. Other key leaders of the multinational force will include Commodore Paul O’Grady of the Royal Australian Navy, who will command the maritime component, and Brig. Gen. During RIMPAC, a network of capable, adaptive partners train and operate together in order to strengthen their
collective forces and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. RIMPAC 2022 contributes to the increased interoperability, resiliency and agility needed by the Joint and Combined Force to deter and defeat aggression by major powers across all domains and levels of conflict. As a member of the U.S. Navy, Torres and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy with the nation's needs. “Serving in the Navy means fighting for my family's freedom,” Torres added. PUBLIC NOTICES REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL FOR LA VERDE PARK- INTERACTIVE DEDICATION ELEMENT RFP No: LV-001 Proposal Due Date: Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. Project Overview: City of Kyle Texas (“Owner”) is soliciting a proposal to provide monument signage services for the La Verde Park project located at the Brick-and-Mortar District in Kyle Texas. City of Kyle Texas (CITY OF KYLE) requests your proposal to perform the scope of services outlined in the scope of work and requirements set forth in this Request for Proposal (“RFP”). This RFP is for the fabrication and installation of an interactive dedication Element at La Verde Park in Kyle, Texas. Lionheart Places has developed design intent drawings for this interactive element that are included in this RFP as an attachment. The Element combines a split limestone block seating element with a mix of metal etched dedication text and pin set lettering. A hidden irrigation bubbler flows down a channel cut in the stone to provide an interactive element for the person seated on the bench and connect to the story of aquifer recharge that inspired the design of La Verde Park. At the core of the 138-acre Brick and Mortar District within the Plum Creek Planned Unit Development, is La Verde Park. The park is a 1.67 acre urban destination surrounded by mixed use development of office, retail, and residential. Inspired by the site’s natural geographic qualities, the park design includes a variety of multi-generational program experiences such as interactive water features, performance pavilion, market place, art program, lawn, social games, playground, hammock grove, rain gardens, and dog run. Scope of Work: This RFP is a One-Step process for selecting a Consultant for the Project as provided by Texas Government Code. The Owner will select the lowest responsible bid that meets the design intent. If Owner is unable to successfully execute a contract for services with the top selected firm, Owner will formally end communications and select the next lowest responsible bid respondent and attempt to enter into a contract with that respondent. The consultant chosen by the City of Kyle for this project will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of the complete interactive dedication element. The anticipated scope of work shall include but not be limited to the items listed below and based on requirements set forth in the final conceptual package for the La Verde Dedication Element. This includes all the elements shown in the design intent drawings, including the limestone block, footings, signage, irrigation bubbler, etc. Lionheart Places will be available to answer questions related to the design intent, and their sub-consultant irrigation designer can help coordinate the irrigation bubbler design connection to the overall irrigation system. Evaluation Metrics and Criteria: The firm chosen for this project should meet the fol-
lowing minimum requirements: • Proven project expertise in both fabrication and installation • Proven experience in Texas in the past 5 years • Built examples of monument signage of a similar scale • Fabrication experience with both stone and metal • Location of office handling this contract. Provide the address of the office that will managing the project. Submission Requirements: Pursuant to the provisions of Texas Government Code, proposals will be received until the date and time established below for receipt. After receipt, only the names of respondents will be made public. Prices and other qualification details will only be divulged after the contract award if one is made. Proposals will not be received by telephone, fax, or Mail. Proposals will only be received at the location and time described below: LOCATION: David Harding, CCM Project Manager, City of Kyle, TX dharding@agcm.com TIME: Aug. 23rd, 2022 2:00 pm Submit one (1) electronic copy of the Proposal and all of its contents. Failure to comply with all requirements contained in this RFP may result in rejection. Proposals that are qualified with conditional clauses, alterations, items not called for in the RFP, or irregularities of any kind are subject to rejection. Properly submitted Proposals will be opened and the names of the respondents share with the Owner, the City of Kyle. Proposals cannot be altered or amended after opening time. Proposals cannot be withdrawn after opening time without written approval by CITY OF KYLE based on a written request to withdraw.

PROVIDING HOPE
Local students receive free shoes
BY BRITTANY ANDERSON
KYLE — With the 2020 census showing that 9.6% of Hays County residents are living in poverty, one local organization aims to combat the effects of this by providing underserved children in the county with a free pair of shoes. Hays Cares aims to inspire hope by providing resources, education and economic opportunities for underserved children and families in the county. For the past several years, they have held their Shoes of Hope event, providing school-aged students with a free pair of shoes in preparation for the new school year. Hundreds of families benefited from the Hays Cares Shoes of Hope event on July 30, held at the Lehman High School gym. Three-hundred children received a free pair of shoes, socks and slide sandals. Along with the socks and shoes, backpacks with school supplies were provided. The San Marcos Police Department also provided sausage wraps and the chance for kids to talk with first responders and take pictures with
a squad car and rescue vehicle, along with a Kyle Fire Department fire engine. Hays Cares partners with Samaritan’s Feet to provide the shoes, and local donations from residents are also accepted. Hays Cares also partnered with and has received support from
local organizations such as Hays Latinos United and the Kyle Buda Kiwanis Club. Pastor James Jacobs, who has volunteered with Hays Cares and served the community through this event for five years now, said that in previous years, volunteers would wash the children’s feet

Hays County sell after 23 days on the market compared to 24 days last year, according to Redfin, while Austin homes have stayed a consistent sale after 29 days on the market. There were 442 homes in Hays County sold in June this year and 1,202 homes in Austin sold during the same month. Buying or building a new home, no matter the location, can be an intimidating process. Aaron Boenig, co-founder and copresident of Brohn Homes in Central Texas, shared important tips for purchasing a home in today’s market. According to Boenig, starting early in your home buying/searching process is key. “The earlier you start, the better you will be,” Boeing said. “Identify your budget, the general location where you want to buy a home and find out what’s important to you in your situation. That would be like schools, location of employment, location of shopping and entertainment and the amenities within the community.” Boeing added that the earlier a prospective homebuyer can identify their needs and wants, the more ahead they will be. Identifying the ideal comforts of the homes is the next step. Boeing said that homebuyers should think about what is essential to make a

problems, and can take away from their ability to thrive in school. Kyle Mayor Pro Tem Robert Rizo, who was volunteering, said that with the current state of the economy and prices rising across the board, this event helps provide some relief to families — a new pair of children’s shoes can oftentimes run upwards of $45, or more. Although the event this past weekend was held in preparation for the new school year, Hays Cares provides the service throughout the year, as families are often in need around the holidays. Jacobs said that families do not need to meet a certain criteria to receive shoes, but that they just need to register in advance when they hold the shoe event. However, no one will get turned away, no matter the time of year. If you are interested in donating to Hays Cares or would like more information on how to receive assistance, visit www.hayscares.org.
house feel like home. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage is a smart move as it will help homebuyers get a clear idea of what their budget looks like and how quickly they should move to find their perfect home – and they should also be ready for some competition with other buyers. New construction also has its own perks. “It allows buyers to personalize their home,” Boeing explained. “Building a home can fit what you want and what you really need, [without having to] compromise. Typically, new construction is more energy-efficient [compared to] resale homes, which in the long-run, will save you more money.” As a part of the personalization aspect, clients can select the specific architectural style they want for their home in order to fit their personality. New construction also offers the latest appliances.

CONTRACT EXTENSION
Morris-Kuentz to stay at DSISD for five more years
BY MEGAN WEHRING
DRIPPING SPRINGS – Holly Morris-Kuentz’s contract for superintendent at Dripping Springs ISD has been extended for five years. Morris-Kuentz was originally chosen to lead the district at the special meeting of the board of trustees held on May 5, 2021 – she was named the lone finalist for the position on April 13, 2021, and started her new role on May 6, 2021. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join this amazing team and to serve in Dripping Springs,” Morris-Kuentz said after she was selected for the position. “Over the last 11 years, I have had wonderful experiences leading in a fast-growth district and love the work of engaging a community in that process. I know that, as a growing district, there is much work ahead and I am excited to roll up my sleeves and begin. I want to thank the staff, parents and community members who have reached out and given me a warm welcome. My family and I look forward to becoming a part of the Dripping Springs ISD community.” Morris-Kuentz assumed the position following interim Brett Springston’s time in leadership, who took over after Todd Washburn resigned in October 2020.

NO SWIMMING ALLOWED
Jacob’s Well hits zero flow BY MEGAN WEHRING WIMBERLEY – Jacob’s Well has officially ceased flowing for the fourth time in recorded history – this is the result of the ongoing drought and increased levels of groundwater pumping. The last three major recorded instances of a prolonged zero flow were 2009, 2011 and 2013. This also comes after Hays County officials deemed the area unsafe for swimming earlier this month due to the threat of high bacteria levels, other pollutants and poor visibility. While swimming is canceled to the public for the foreseeable future, the park is open for hiking and viewing the spring. “The U.S. Geologic Survey came out to the park several days ago and measured a zero cubic foot per second discharge/flow,” said Katherine Sturdivant, Parks Specialist II (Education and Outreach). While the spring has neared zero or briefly stopped flowing other times in the past, this is a much more serious issue as there is no end in sight. This is a direct result of the ongoing drought felt across Texas. We typically get a large rain in May during the rainy season, but missed out this year, making things worse. Water flowing from Jacob's Well comes from the Trinity Aquifer System, which supplies many residences and businesses in the area with drinking water via ground wells.” Sturdivant added that as the county continues to grow, more pressure is put on the limited groundwater resource which makes for a complex issue. Solving the problem is
challenging. “What we really need is rain. Lots of rain,” Sturdivant said. “Rainfall in this area moves downwards through the ground into our aquifer systems and supplies the many springs and wells nearby. Without rain, and throughout this drought, the groundwater resources here have been depleted, causing problems for everyone. One thing that residents can do is be mindful of their continued water use. Water is a finite resource that everyone
needs to survive and we need to share it carefully.” The parks department and other Hays County officials can not anticipate when Jacob’s Well will be open again for swimming. This area of Texas gets the most expected rain in May and October but the area missed the big rainfall earlier this year – Sturdivant hopes that October will bring more precipitation to the region.“Without any immediate rainfall, it is likely that visitors will need to
wait until next summer for a chance to swim in the spring,” Sturdivant said. Jacob’s Well Natural Area is an 80-acre natural area containing the Jacob’s Well spring. The park has existed since about 2010 – invasive species and trash have been removed continuously in an effort to improve the land. The spring is a popular tourist destination over the summer as the water remains a constant 68 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature.
