Dripping with glamour

WEDDING DAY BEAUTY TIPS FOR THE BRIDE By Joan Daniels

Y

our wedding day should be a day that you look back on with fond memories, beautiful pictures & no stress! Here is a countdown of glamour tips to make your wedding day makeup be beautiful and stress free:

10

Start with beautiful skin

Think of make-up like icing on the cake … yes it can hide some flaws, but the clearer your skin is, the more confidently you will walk down the aisle! Start using a good skin care regimen 3 to 6 months in advance, as well as work on increasing your water, vegetable and fruit intake and decreasing oil in your diet. You will not only clear up your skin, but feel better too! Use skin care that is noncomedogenic (will not clog your pores) and has a daily sunscreen of at least spf 30 to prevent wrinkles and sun damage.

9

Test out your look in advance of your wedding and photos

Wear a classically beautiful look. Trends will come and go, so you want a look that wil be gorgeous when you look back at your photos in 20, 30, 50 years! You also want to still look like you.

8

Find and wear a foundation that truly matches your skin tone There is nothing worse than having that “pumpkin face” or line of make up on your jawline! Be sure the foundation is also non-comedogenic and allows your skin to breathe. Great foundation makes for a more flawless you and should look like you don’t have foundation on. Find foundation with oil absorption for at least 6 hours for your wedding day to help prevent shine. Foundation should be applied before your have your hair done to keep it out of your hairline. The rest of your make-up can be applied after your hair is done.

7

Pick your best feature … eyes or lips?

Dramatic eyes or lips are great, but you get into trouble when you do both. A dramatic, smokey eye look or a classic cat eye look is balanced with a more neutral lip. Dramatic red lips look beautiful with a neutral eye. How do you pick? Which do you get the most compliments on? Which would make you feel most beautiful? DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE H

11

6

Use oil control/shine control for everyone in the wedding party

Photos will be taken throughout your big day. Oil control can start with your skin care or foundation, but there are great products to help throughout the day, even for the groom. Use a clear Oil Mattifier to soak up excess oil and Beauty Blotters (tissues) to soak up oil without disturbing make-up. This will prevent the need for multiple layers of powder throughout the day, and the groomsmen will look great without any shine too! 5

Wear waterproof mascara

Yes, you might tear up! Even the toughest of brides gets emotional as she looks in her families’ eyes as she walks down the aisle! Just do it. Better safe than have raccoon eyes!

4

Use a great finishing spray

This product is like hair spray but for make-up! Foundation primer, Eye primer, Lip primer… it can all help, but finishing spray is amazing! Your make-up will look great for hours.

3

Use concealer and contouring techniques

People often ask how models get that flawless look, and it is usually contouring techniques. Be careful around the eyes as concealer can sometimes be too drying and emphasize wrinkles. You can mix it with a little moisturizer or use a Facial Highlighting pen that has a creamier texture with a lighter finish.

2

Use a professional to decrease your stress on your big day

Work with someone who will let you pick your look at least a month in advance and who works with photographers. This is your day to sit back, relax and focus on the love of your life … not worry about your make-up. 1

Remember that you are beautiful

When you look in that mirror, realize that you were made perfectly! Every contour of your face is uniquely you and you are fearfully and wonderfully made! Love and joy will light up your face on your wedding day and NOTHING is more beautiful than that! ‘The Wedding Capital of Texas ’ ®

Web series focuses on love and positivity in Dripping Springs Staff Report

W

hen Dawn Denny pitched a wedding-themed television program to a network TV representative in July 2015, visions of success came to mind. But Denny, of Low Key Films, quickly found her idea, based on Dripping Springs, the Wedding Capital of Texas ® , didn’t take off as she hoped. Denny recalled that the representative loved the show, but commented the program was “just too positive.” “They basically wanted us to create drama, and while there is a platform for that type of show, we just didn’t feel our show should be on that platform,” Denny said. Despite the push back, Denny forged ahead and found a new medium to work with. By utilizing the Internet, Denny, who previously worked at KXAN news in Austin, will launch her 18 H DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

“What we found were love stories of overcoming some pretty great obstacles to be together, and that’s beautiful – but not the negativity the network desired.” – Dawn Denny with Low Key Films new program, “The Wedding Capital of Texas®,” as a web series on Valentine’s Day 2017. Denny, a Dripping Springs resident, said she and her crew spent a year developing the show around couples who get married in the Dripping Springs area. The program centered on the owners of area venues and the venues themselves. “What we found were love stories of overcoming some pretty great obstacles to be together, and that’s beautiful – but not the negativity the network desired,” Denny said. Denny added that while some

people “like to watch the train wrecks,” she and her crew wanted to focus on something that leaves a viewer “feeling better about themselves, better about the people they have watched, and better about the world.” “There is a thirst for that sort of programming,” Denny said. In the fall of 2016, Denny, along with her cinematographer husband, Steve, and a small handful of freelancers, decided to launch the show as a web series. Denny said one primary difference from other web series is that episodes are full-length. Denny said audience members

are introduced to the couple getting married, the owners of the venue, and the history surrounding the venue. “The venue owners, the vendors, and the couples have all been so cooperative and enthusiastic about this show,” Denny said. “This is really a show about the love stories passing through Dripping Springs. It’s pretty romantic to be a part of it.” For Denny, creating the show is a deviation from her career as television journalist. Steve worked – and continues to work – as a camera operator on several shows that have come through the Austin area. Those shows include “The Son,” “Revolution,” “American Crime,” and “Friday Night Lights.” Steve said the program is an “obvious show,” but believes people will enjoy the background information they gather from it. He added that was one of the reasons why Low Key Films opted to go with a fulllength episode. Steve said a five-minute clip wouldn’t “do justice” for venues such as

with Low Key Films

Camp Lucy. Denny said the film crew plans to include as many of the 38 venues within a 17mile stretch in the Dripping Springs area.

While the crew aspires to have the show picked up by a network, Denny said they’re still enjoying editorial control they currently have. “What I love is that every

day is different,” said Steve. “One day, we’re shooting a wedding, and the next day we find out about some historical significance of that particular venue.”

ike many brides-to-be, Lori Hendricks in 1996, understood the importance of having a high quality wedding cake. The classes began with small birthday cakes in the beginning and gradually moved up to larger cakes. However, Hendricks said creating wedding cakes intimidated her at first. When it came time to create her own wedding cake, she was terrified of stacking the cakes on top of each other. Hendricks soon realized just how successful she could be as revelers at her wedding enjoyed her cake. Nine years later, Dripping Springs now has close to 40 venues, along with the designation as the “Wedding Capital of Texas ®,” which was designated by the state in 2015. During that time, Hendricks has seen an influx of patrons reach out to her business.

how social media and the internet have changed the way brides look at cakes. With a background in art, Hendricks said she’s created groom’s cakes that range from vehicles to a plate of steak and potatoes and tacos. “It doesn’t have to be a little white cake with raspberry filling and that’s stacked with no design,” Hendricks said. “The sky is the limit. You can be as crazy as possible or as delicate or colorful.” Over the last two years, more people are looking for more rustic, classic looking cakes. “People look at that style, it’s simple but classic,” she said. “You can also add some greenery, or dress it up or down.” As couples continue to descend on Dripping Springs for weddings, Hendricks said business will thrive for those in the industry. “It’s not going to go down or away, it’s going to get bigger,” she said.

Finding your perfect wedding cake You’ve got the dress, the venue and the wedding party selected, but what about that all-important cake? Lori Hendricks has a few tips for those seeking the perfect cake. STAY WITHIN BUDGET Hendricks said one of the most important things is for couples to keep in mind their budget. “We’d hate to have someone coming in town and have picture from Pinterest from a cake in New York that’s $15,000,” she said. Consider the design and guest count when trying to determine a budget. THERE’S A REASON FOR THE SEASON Keeping in mind the season is an additional factor when it comes to cakes.

DON’T DELAY, CALL NOW While many magazines urge brides to order a cake 3 to 4 months prior to the big day, Hendricks said brides should instead order 6 to 8 months in advance. The reason is many cake businesses have multiple orders to fulfill during the busy wedding season. Hendricks said she will bake 8 to 11 cakes every weekend.

GUIDE

Focus on your special day with the help of a wedding planner By Moses Leos III

A

fter working in the wedding industry for 15 years, Kimberley Bentley understands the importance of ensuring a bride’s “special day” goes off without a hitch. As the owner of Silver Thistle Events in Dripping Springs, Bentley said she, and those in her profession, are “the glue that holds everyone together” at a wedding. An event planner is essentially a liaison between the bride and groom and potential vendors or venues. The planner is the person who “coordinates the event” and pulls the vision together from the beginning, depending on what a bride and groom want, Bentley said. For Bentley, that path begins when she holds her initial meeting with the bride and groom. During that time, she gets to know the couple’s personality. The goal, Bentley said, is to make sure they are all a “good fit” and are like-minded. Not working on the same page could potentially mean that the couple’s expectations may not be satisfied, Bentley said, though she added that it’s a rare occurrence. “They need to know you can provide them with what they’re looking for during that period of time,” Bentley said. “It’s an intimate relationship because it’s their most special day.” After the initial meeting, Bentley said event planners begin the process of facilitating the bride’s vision. Maintaining strong communication is vital between the bride and the event planner, Bentley said, as it’s a “strong positive” and the connection between them must happen. Making sure proceedings go as smoothly as possible is the focus for Bentley, who aims to make sure the bride, groom, family and wedding party are happy. That extends to booking the caterer and venue, to planning the rehearsals and making sure things go right on wedding day. That occasionally means smoothing ruffled feathers when it comes to family members. “I am the task master. If someone wants to do special things, go for it. But when it comes to getting (a bride) in line and going down the aisle, that’s me,” she said. Working with the dreaded “bridezilla” is also something event and wedding planners work with, though such cases are rare, Bentley said.

She said ensuring everyone is on the same page assists in avoiding a “bridezilla” situation. In the event that a “bridezilla” situation is unavoidable, patience plays a big role. “You deal with it with grace and poise,” Bentley said. “To have patience and the ability to understand they are stressed out.” For Bentley, one of the more strenuous times for event planners is the big day itself. Making sure she has all of the details and is entirely prepared is her focus. But she also realizes that “little things happen” and situations can change. Being flexible and patient, while also reacting quickly to changing circumstances, are key attributes for event planners, even if the bride shows up late, or a wellintentioned uncle tries to give a spirited toast. “You play nice, make everything good and remember that it’s their day, and that you need to facilitate that,” Bentley said.
