Until 2016, there were 775 footbridges in Hong Kong. Walking on bridges is almost a part of Hong Kong people's daily routine.

The Central Pedestrian Bridge System has a total of 42 bridges, connecting 23 buildings.

Its scale and extensive network are widely recognized by architectural, planning and landscape around the world.

The Government considers the elevated pedestrian walkway in the Central District to be "very successful" and plans to construct a similar pedestrian road network in the other crowded areas of Hong Kong, including Mong Kok and Tsuen Wan

Tsuen Wan has been called the "City of Bridges" in recent years. According to the statistics of the reporters, there are now 43 footbridges in the pedestrian bridge network in Tsuen Wan. It spans more than 1 kilometer from east to west and 700 meters from north to south.

With the development of Tsuen Wan West, Tsuen Wan will build 11 more Pedestrian bridges.

Mong Kok East Station is now connected to Mong Kok Station with a 400-metre bridge. The Government is discussing to build a 700-metre "Super Pedestrian Bridge" which runs through Argyle Street and connects to Tai Kok Tsui.

Cities Without Groundďź?775. Turkish writer Mehmet Murat Ildan once wrote: "Bridge are destined to be lonely, because people will only pass by and will not stay." Some scholars believe that most pedestrian bridges in Hong Kong are only belongs to functional designs, like "conveyor belts", making the pedestrians to pass by in a hurry.

Cities Without Ground. I'm not the only one to think that way. In fact, a trio of authors with backgrounds in architecture and academia have written a new book, Cities Without Ground, which analyses -- and intricately models with multi-dimensional graphics -- 32 sites across Hong Kong where shopping malls, parks, office tower lobbies, tunnels, escalators, roof gardens and more come together in sprawling tiered patterns.

City in the sky created to relieve Tsuen wan traffic problems. It is understood that the Commissioner for Transport, Chen Mibao, has made a special trip to the Tsuen Wan District Council and has taken the lead in introducing a number of proposals to improve transport and transport management in Tsuen Wan, such as the intelligent automatic parking system, the establishment of a footbridge network in the area, the installation of display screens at the You bus station, the availability of real parking spaces in the district, The addition of a new generation of roadside meter and so on, if the results are significant, will be expanded to 18 districts throughout the territory.

Tsuen Wan has developed rapidly in recent years, according to the statistics department, the number of people in the area is more than 300,000, but the situation of road traffic is very frequent, in addition to the circumstances of accidents, traffic congestion and illegal parking, the high rents in the area are very disturbing to the residents in the district.Tsuen Wan District parking is not enough, the number of car parks is not sufficient, and the price of parking spaces in large estates in the district has been rising in short supply. According to the data provided by the CARPARKHK website, the latest transaction price has reached $1.6 million at the L1 level of the Tsuen Wan waterfront Garden, and at $31st at the G floor of Tsuen King Garden in Tsuen Wan Urban Centre, the latest price has reached $1.838 million. The problem of illegal parking in the Tsuen Wan District is very serious and there are a number of illegal parking spots in the area, including: Tsuen King Wai, Lutheran Wai, Sha Tsui Road, Chung on Street, Henry Street, Lok Cheng Street, Dam Street, Hoi PA Street and Horseshoe Land Square, and so on, some Tsuen Wan District District Council members refer to the police's monthly ticket issued in the district. The number of beef jerky is as high as 3000, in addition to the daily "beef Jerky" issued by traffic inspectors in the district, the daily patrol squad of the police has set up a dedicated street management group to charge vehicles to traffic illegal black spots in the district, and the problem is extremely serious.

Footbridge network (pros). City in the sky created to relieve Tsuen Wan traffic problems Tsuen Wan District Parliamentary documentation shows the recommendations:"Sky City-Tsuen Wan Footbridge network", to create the Tsuen Wan as the Sky City, will be existing footbridges connected to other footbridges or add CCB footbridge, so that the community can be more convenient, more environmentally friendly and "barrier-free" to reach all over the area, but also to increase the road area, in addition to reducing the situation of road traffic, can also make vehicles unimpeded 1. The Highways Department will engage consultants to design the existing footbridge at Tai Chung Road and Hoi Shing Road, which is expected to commence in 2021 and be completed in 2024.2. In addition to the footbridge at Sai Lau Kok Road off the Nanfeng Centre, the Highways department has completed its preliminary design and will carry out a detailed design, and the highways Department will expedite the project.3. The Highways department will engage a consultancy firm to design the project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019 at the Wan King Plaza and the CCB footbridge connecting Tsuen Wan Square.4. The Highways Department will employ consultants, together with footbridge E, to carry out research and design to construct footbridges at Wing Shun Street, MA Tau Pa Road, Luen Yan Street, Kwan Hau Street, and to connect the existing footbridge on Castle Peak Road, and the footbridge will be used directly to the Tsuen Wan MTR station at Pak Ao Wan and public Coliseum.

Floating. Half of the residents in Mong Kok feel like they're living under the bridge

Ivan Ho pointed out that the footbridge would be sheltered from the sun, leaving half the residents of Mong Kok feeling living under the footbridge, and pointed out that a section of Shanghai Street to Nathan Road was specially designed

Building around the bridge It is very dark to the place below the bridge.

to open a branch of the footbridge to Langham Place, instead of using the wider pedestrian channel before Langham Place, so that the footbridge would be affixed to the old building. He estimated that the government was trying to avoid big owners ' objections by describing the practice as "easy to take".He also pointed out that the footbridge also needed to meet the requirements of the barrier-free channel, but only one lift was built in some locations, and when the lifts were repaired, the needy would be forced to "take the road".

World splitted by footbridge. Lecturer, Department of Cultural and Religious studies, Chen Jiaming refers to the footbridge itself is a top-down space production, with a lot of symbols and hints to promote the effective flow of people, footbridges will have different signs and maps, to instruct pedestrians how to reach their destination efficiently. Like a conveyor belt, a pedestrian in the same direction will walk on the same side, indicating that the bridge is effectively using symbols to fix the flow direction of pedestrians.Instead, Chen Jiaming pointed out that pedestrians in the streets have a higher autonomy, less guidance on the streets of the symbol, and there are a large number of street, old shops for pedestrians left to wear the right plug, so that pedestrians have different experience of walking.

Figure: Lecturer, Department of Chen Jiaming Culture and religious Studies

Worlds splitted by footbridge. Labour Tsuen Wan community Officer Zhao Enlai mentioned that the impact of the footbridge on the Tsuen Wan community had surfaced after the completion of the Tai Ho Road footbridge. First of all, the pedestrian flow on the road has been greatly reduced, and many of the shops at Tai Ho Road have closed down. He considered that the construction of the footbridge itself was not conducive to the development of the community, and that the footbridge space could not shape a public space with community links, so that these "splitted world" make pedestrian not likely to enter the old Tsuen Wan area under the footbridge anymore. No one wants to discover the Tsuen Wan of old areas.ďż˝

Worlds splitted by footbridge. it began to lose cheap neighborhood food and replaced it with the special food featured in the new holiday, "The street shop seems to be the minority, but the real street shop has been cleared to the left". Janet state that soaring prices are very serious.

Solutions. 1.Diversify the bridge

2.Make the ground level attractive

3.Interesting human transportation between bridge and ground

4.Increasing interaction between bridge and ground

5.Reducing human usage of ground level

Interaction. Increasing interaction between bridge and street People on and under the bridge recognize other by looking at each other Mirrors reflect natural light to the bridge.ďż˝

Transportation. Interesting human transportation Using rope course and slide as connection rope course circulate people on and under the bridge The slide force people on the bridge move to the street.Because of the interesting connectors, hopefully there are more people circulated to the ground

Interection. Increasing interaction between bridge and the street Make the bridge transparent, the person above can see things on ground level, the people on the ground can also see the people on the bridge.

Transportation. Interesting human transportation between bridge and ground Install a device similar to Ferris wheel, rotating slowly, carrying people, provide a place for slowing down and viewing scenery, and alternative of an elevator.

Slide-connection. 【Taiwan spiral 】slide directly to the lobby With a total length of 800 meters and a vertical distance of 135 meters, it consists of covered walkways and overpasses, 20 one-way convertible escalators and 3 walkways. In order to make the residents living nearby convenient and to ease the busyness of the narrow roads. Since then, this escalator has become a great place for tourists. About 85,000 people use it every day, and it takes more than 20 minutes to complete a single trip.

Insufficient lighting at home. Corresponding to the blackness problem on both sides of the bridge

The outdoor natural light refraction to indoor, improve indoor lighting level, so that your room even without good lighting pattern, can also enjoy the same brightness.Espaciel, a home lighting company from Brussels, Belgium, designed a reflector with a reflectivity of up to 95%, which instantly boosts the brightness of the interior, and is superior to the reflection efficiency of the general mirror 30%!! Not only so the mirror surface has waterproof, scratch-resistant coating, even if the wind and rain does not affect the reflection efficiency, according to different home space, a total balcony, indoor window sill, outdoor window sill 3 types of mirrors, for you to choose, is a small number of suites also applicable

Diversity. Diversify the bridge Create more functions and events for the bridge, not just working like conveyor, to make it more diversified.

Transportation. Interesting human transportation between bridge and ground Install elevatable platforms blurring the definition of bridge and ground

Diversify the bridge. South Korea: Seoul Road 7017

When the footbridge is no longer safe, it may be demolished in Hong Kong in the morning. But in Seoul, these 17 safety levels have been rated as D-class footbridges but have a new destiny. The city government has converted them into footbridges, connecting the city's many sightseeing spots, and looking for landscape designers to re-green the bridge space, with more than 24,000 flowers and trees embellishment, garden scenery will be due to the four Seasons change. The rest facilities on the bridge are designed to be unique, not just a few benches for delivery, or even a trampoline for children to play with.ďż˝

Diversify the bridge.

Diversify the bridge. New York: High Line Park

Located in Manhattan District, the high-line park is an abandoned viaduct on the West End line of New York's Central Railway, and is now being activated as an aerial garden. The high-line park is 2.33 kilometres long, with green and rest facilities along the way, and the park is connected to different buildings and attractions in west Manhattan. Since its opening in 2009, the park has become a model example of the activation of old buildings, and Seoul Road 7017 has also been designed with reference to them.ďż˝

Diversify the bridge. San Francisco: Transbay Transit Centre

It is expected to be opened this August, and the original transshipment center was destroyed by the earthquakeďźŒThe roof of the new transshipment centre will be zoned for 2.2 hectares of park. Facilities include an open-air theatre, a courtyard water feature and a large number of trees in the park. Located in the heart of San Francisco, the transshipment center is surrounded by skyscrapers and is like an oasis.ďż˝

Floating and city relationship. Footbriges mainly located at Centural district and Tsuen Wan district, They are tend to be popular and developed rapidly around Hong kong

They release the pressure of pedestrian flow by moving people to the floating levels.

Floating and city relationship.

Footbridges usually located at first and second floor, some of them connecting MTR exities and nearby buildings or two building at a higher level, avoiding the obstacles on the ground.

The increasing pedestrian flow is a challenge to the capacity, reducing the possibility of adding functions.

Not only for Building, Footbridges are more likely to developed vertically.

Floating and city relationship. Increasing pedestrian flow, diverse activities and facilities, footbridges become floating spaces with branches, creating new connections and incresed the effectiveness of pedestrian flow

Floating and city relationship. Hong Kong's footbridges connected the city, but not able to let pedestrian to feel the city.

The branches can happen on any floating space, even there are leveling difference,

Also they can appeared not in a particular form, for example, a chairlift. Provided a way to float in the city, embracing the extremity of city by interesting methods.

Floating and city relationship. Footbridges are floating spaces away from ground, It should functioned more than a conveyor. Due to the increasing footprint of bridges, why not just float a platform over the city, maximising the floating extremity.

Floating and city relationship. In terms of cultural conservation, when people migrated to the upward city, the existing heritage are remained, people are allowed to sightsee the preserved cityscape, protecting Hong Kong cuture during developing rapidly.

Floating and city relationship. summarize

There is a problem on the ground e.g.People and cars fight for the road etc

The appear of footbridges

Problems caused by the bridge over the ground e.g.Lost people etc

Although it can alleviate this problem There may be a problem with the first ground

First solution: balance ground and bridge Number of people etc. Able to soothe this problem

Put the benefits of the ground on the flyover Take the advantages of footbridge and ground level Make the bridge bigger May form a vertical platform/city

In order to keep the unity of the content of the exhibition, we set up some rules to make our fantasy happens in the same world. 2050s'

In Hong Kong, under the mindsets of utilitarianism To make audience fantasize the future city, there is no specific order to place the zoning of a different timeline If I am an audience, I will be surprised that there is no any hint for the preferred directions, I don’t know where I should go after finishing the current section. But fortunately, I am clearly explained on the locations, topics, and contents of different sections by the signages and maps. There is no specific order for the sections of a different decade, Under this situation, the audience can go to the section of the current development trend and led to a further thinking of a future city

2030s'

If the audience visited the section about the 2050s, this makes them curious what happened to Hong Kong before the 2050s and to think the future development. There is also a situation that there are the 2030s and 2050s sections on different extremities as a neighbor, which make people think about the extremities in different decades, what happened before and what happened after. This fulfilled the objective that stimulates the audience’s fantasies in a future city. Because fantasy of a future city is unstoppable so that there is a section about the fantasy of people at 2050s, this exhibition is actually an inspiring experience, everyone has their own fantasies hidden, it is the time to let them expose.

2020s. Footbridge is a tool The fourth diagram is about 2020s decade predictions, footbridges is a tool to increase pedestrian effectiveness, working like a conveyor of people, so that we use a Moving sidewalk and blocking vision to show the dullness of footbridges at 2020s, also currently there are lots of obstacle for pedestrian walking on the street, some the functions are being taken away, for example shop are closing due to the growth of footbridge networks. So we wanted to make the street level undesirable to pass through, by installing obstacle to affect the willingness to pass through the street.

2030s. Footbridge is more than a tool For 2030s, bridges started to have multi-levels which bring new connections mode, we tried to find elements about connection methods from the previous researches and concept development, to make footbridges more than a tool and make people reconnect with the city instead of going into a conveyor.

*questions Why 2020s element happened at 2050s It is because they are not actually exist, they are solutions pinpointing the current issues on footbridges’ and city’s relationship.

2040s. Extremely Complicated Footbridges System and the Begining of Floating Structure

The third diagram is about 2040s decade fantasy, from previous concept development, we try to use a elevatable platform to encourage vertical pedestrian flow, and this inspire us to scale up the elevator as a tool for connecting the floating city and the ground. Also, in the story, at 2040s decade, the footbridges development are out of control, those connections become super complicated. At this zone our design mainly show the contrast between the unfinished floating city and the existing footbridge system. To show the floating structure is under construction, there are frame exposed near the platform, and the coverage of floating platform are not fully covered. For the lower parts, there are many irregular platform showing the complexity but they are all connected due to the density.

2050s. Preserve whole city as heritage and develop above Next diagram is about 2050s decade fantasy, based on previous concept development, transparent material increase awareness of people different spaces, in the exhibition, both people inside are able to aware each other. For the story of year at 2050s, Majority of population migrated to the floating city, the existing face of city turned into heritage. There are tunnels connecting the floating city and the old footbridges, providing cultural tours for future people. Which inspire us to locate the tube cross bordering different decades’ zones, people on the path are able to witness other zones. This stimulates the audience’s fantasies in a future city.
