Issue 3
The Retreat at Hazeldean expands with the construction on its Frail Care facility starting soon Even though improved healthcare and lifestyles means that South Africans can expect to enjoy many more years of retirement than in the past, examining the healthcare options on offer before choosing a retirement village or estate is of vital importance.
In addition to the construction of the Frail Care, construction on phase 1 B of The Retreat Apartments will start in the second half of 2013, with an additional 14 apartments to be completed by early 2014. Even though the apartments caters for active retirees, each unit has been designed to cater for any midcare needs that might arise in future. When all future phases of the apartments are complete there will be a total of 144 apartments.
At the very least, residents in a retirement village should expect easy access to basic medical care facilities, with escalated levels of care immediately available in times of health crisis.
This 20-bed Frail Care will be connected to the existing Retreat Clubhouse and will be a fully operational facility with a nurses station, dining room and medical services that are compliant with the Older Persons Act of 2006. Emergency care will be linked directly to an ambulance service. The Retreat is conveniently close to the Intercare Sub-Acute and Day Hospital as well as the Wilgers Hospital.
Ser vices at the apar tments includes 15 meals a month and a weekly cleaning and laundry service is included in the levy. Extra meals can be ordered as desired. Each apartment has a panic button linked to the clinic and the security control room. Home-based care is currently offered at The Retreat, with care workers caring for residents in the comfort of their own home. Phase 4 of The Retreat Houses is already 60% sold and planning is underway to launch Phase 5. The Retreat already has 160 residents living there.
The building has been designed in such a way as to provide for possible future expansion of the facility. As part of this phase of construction at The Retreat, the developer will also be building a storage facility which will be connected to the clubhouse and the Frail Care, with space for undercover ambulance parking, garages for Retreat vehicles, staff facilities, storage rooms and more.
The clubhouse consists of a lounge, ladies bar, bridge room, library, a fully equipped gym, with a sauna and 3 heated indoor swimming pools, and much more. A dining area will be built along with future phases.

Your Autumn Garden Flowering shrubs There are many autumn-flowering shrubs that bloom beautifully in the stretch between summer and winter. Autumn is actually the best time to plant shrubs as the weather is mild and the plants become established more easily. Roses can also be encouraged to flower in autumn if you cut them back lightly and fertilize them after their summer flowering.
Some shrubs to consider planting now: Lion’s Ear (Leonitis leonurus) - an indigenous shrub with whorls of orange or cream flowers. It is frost resistant and can tolerate dry conditions. Bush Violet (Barleria obtuse) - a water wise indigenous shrub which provides a riot of colour in autumn. It bears masses of rose or pale blue trumpets. Sasanque camellia is the first of the camellia family to flower, is evergreen and boasts frilled flowers in white, pink and red with glossy, dark-green foliage. Ribbon bush (Hypoestes aristata) is an indigenous evergreen shrub with lilac, purple or white flowers. It is a tough plant which is frost tolerant and water wise.
turn red or crimson may only become yellow or bronze and won’t show intense colour. Choose trees that colour in cool to subtropical gardens, dark evergreen trees and dark coloured houses suit pale yellow and orange foliage, while lighter houses contrast with rich reds and burgundys.
Carrots - They last for many months in the ground and can .be harvested as required. Cauliflower - Sow an early maturing variety and a late maturing variety to extend your harvest. Leeks - Sow in seedbeds and transplant into larger beds when their stems reach 2mm in diameter.
Vegetable gardens February is the ideal time to plant vegetables that can be used for winter soups. You should now start planting:
Other vegetables to plant now include: Cabbage, celery, lettuce, onion, parsnips, radishes and turnips. Happy planting!
TOP TIP: Daffodils look beautiful when planted close to shrubs and autumn is also the ideal time to plant daffodil bulbs. To make planting easier, use a bulb planter from a garden centre. Look for clean, firm and plump bulbs with no obvious root or shoot growth and plant them as soon as possible. Trees Why do leaves change colour? In autumn, leaf colour needs cold nights to develop, signalling the tree to remove and store green chlorophyll from the leaves. With the green gone, all the other leaf colours can be seen, such as red and purple from anthocyanins, and orange and yellow from cartenoids. In warmer areas, trees that should
