Newly improved Woolworths Foodmarket opening in June

Above: Hazeldean shoppers can look forward to a fishmonger, unique coffee bar and much more at the newly revamped Woolworths store. Extensive modernisations and expansions to the existing Woolworths Food Store at Hazeldean Square Shopping Centre will culminate in the launch of the new Woolworths Hazeldean Store opening on 26 June 2014. The new 1,500m² store, much expanded from its previous size of 452m², is based on Woolworths’ award-winning interior design, with new flooring, equipment and visuals all contributing to a thoroughly modern, appealing shopping environment. Woolworths prides itself on its customer-centric focus and in response they decided to expand the foodmarket at their Hazeldean Square store. The new store catalogue will be much bigger and will

include a bakery, meat shop, fish shop, hot foods counter, coffee bar and artisanal counters. The bigger store will allow customers to do their entire household’s shopping in one convenient location. Not only will they be able to choose from more delicious food, more cleaning and beauty products and more everyday basics for the pantry; with the new artisanal food counters, they’ll also be able to buy meat cut to order by an expert butcher, responsibly sourced fish and seafood from an experienced fishmonger, freshly baked breads and rolls from an in-store bakery and, along with Woolies famous rotisserie chicken, a range of tasty ready-to-eat foods from the hot foods counter. The coffee bar in the coffee aisle, will allow customers to taste some of their estate and regional coffees - with the option of having beans blended and ground to their

specification. Customers in the area can look forward to many special offers in-store during the re-launch period. Trading hours have been extended to offer maximum convenience - Mondays to Fridays from 08:00 – 21:00, Saturdays from 08:00 – 20:00 and Sundays from 09:00 – 19:00. For more information contact the Woolworths Foodmarket at Hazeldean Square Shopping Centre on 012 809 9320.

Silver Lakes Road upgrade on the cards Over the past years, there has been a noticeable, deterioration of Silver Lakes Road. This deterioration has been attributed largely to the lack of stormwater control and the failure of the road prism due to stormwater penetration. “A proposal to upgrade Silver Lakes Road is currently underway, which will include inter-alia the construction of additional lanes in both directions, the upgrading of most of the estates’ access points along the road with traffic circles, and the installation of a formal underground stormwater system,” says Richard Hirst, Divisional

Manager of SiVEST’s Engineering Division. SiVEST has been appointed by the City of Tshwane to investigate the options available for a possible upgrade and submit a proposal. “The introduction of additional lanes in both directions is a direct result of the volume of traffic during both the morning and afternoon peak periods. This will assist with the mobility of the road in both directions, but will however have an adverse effect at the various estate entrances for the residents. The introduction of traffic circles at these entrances will not only assist with vehicular movements,

but will also act as ‘traffic calming’ measures,“ says Hirst. The proposed upgrading of the road will take place between the ‘Abbots College’ traffic circle in the south, right through to ‘Ridge Road’ (Curro School) in the north. Such an upgrade will alleviate traffic in the area until the future infrastructure of the greater Hazeldean Node has been implemented. Further information is expected to become available in the near future.

Hazel’s Nature Nook By Jean Jonker

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” - Edith Sitwell Slowly, but surely the mercury drops and deep greens turn to pale yellows and light browns. It is truly fantastic seeing the surroundings changing every season. Our green lawns don’t seem that green anymore and we tend to light up the fireplace instead of the braai. Early morning winter lawns are often covered in a white, frosty layer, but spikes of brilliant red and yellow or pink aloes brighten dull winter days; their colours subtly mellow to warm the chill. They attract shiny sunbirds who sips nectar from their tubular, waxy flowers. Most aloes, and some succulents, produce their brightly coloured flowers in winter when virtually nothing else is in bloom. Staying indoors just doesn’t seem very South African. We grab a scarf and that woollen hat grandma gave you at Christmas and charge into the outdoors. There is truly a winter wonderland that is waiting to be explored. A mid-morning hike doesn’t seem that exhausting when it’s not 30°C outside and I will always remember that my first Rainbow Trout was caught in the heart of winter. A week does not go by where I don’t spend a few minutes checking on our feathered friends at The Ridge dam. Last week I noticed a plastic bag floating in the dam and asked a gardener to quickly retrieve it, he answered with a shy “but it’s cold sir. “. I looked up and noticed the Waterfowl did not really care about the freezing water. It seems they are completely impervious to the cold and the Redknobbed Coots seem to have enlarged their family unit by six fluffy chicks. These amazing birds are probably familiar to anyone who has ever walked along a vlei or dam, and they can keep me entertained for hours just by looking at them searching for food and playing in the reeds. Here is a little bit of information about these residents:

Sabreal’s winter maintenance tips By Hans van Tonder • •

• • • • •

Reverse the rotation of your ceiling fan. This will bring down heated air from the ceiling. Be sure to clean all gutters by the end of winter and before the Spring rains. Blocked gutters can cause water to build up, spill over onto woodwork and cause rot to set in. Drain and store garden hoses under-roof to prevent damage by freezing water. Have your chimney checked and serviced by a licensed contractor at least once a year to guard against chimney fires. Learn how to shut off your water and know where your pipes are located in case they freeze; you may be able to prevent water damage. Add weather stripping around doors and caulk windows to guard agains drafts and heat loss. Keep up with roof maintenance and be aware of the strain it takes as the temperatures vary considerably throughout the year. Metal roofs sustain stress as temperature changes will cause them to expand and contract, pulling at the screws that hold them together. The increased use of electrical appliances, from heaters to electric blankets are electrical fire hazards so replace worn plugs and cords, and take heed if a fuse or circuit trips continuously.

The Red-knobbed Coot or Crested Coot, (Fulica cristata), is a member of the rail and crake bird family, the Rallidae. It is a resident breeder across much of Africa and in southernmost Spain on freshwater lakes and ponds. It builds a nest of dead reeds near the water’s edge or more commonly afloat, laying about 8 eggs (or more in good conditions). However, its behaviour towards its own young is so aggressive that only a few are likely to survive to adulthood. Description and identification Upper body of a bird in breeding condition in South Africa. The Red-knobbed Coot is largely black except for the white frontal shield. It is 38–45 cm long, spans 75–85 cm across the wings and weighs 585–1,085g. As a swimming species, it has partial webbing on its long strong toes. The juvenile is paler than the adult, has a whitish breast, and lacks the facial shield; the adult’s black plumage develops strongly territorial during the breeding season. when about 3–4 months old, but the white shield is only fully developed at about one year old, sometimes even The Red-knobbed Coot is reluctant to fly and when taking off runs across the water surface with much splashing. Beating Influenza this winter By Dr Yolande Louw It’s that time of the year again - no matter what preventative measures you take, you can hardly escape the dreaded “FLU SEASON”. As a GP I have found that many people don’t know the difference between a common cold and flu. Influenza (flu) is caused by the influenza virus, usually has a rapid onset and causes severe symptoms within hours. Symptoms include fever, coughing, a stuffy nose and muscle and joint pain. Colds, on the other hand, are caused by an array of respiratory viruses, and it usually has a slower onset. It normally starts with a sore throat, runny nose and mild Myths about the flu shot fever. Influenza is a potentially deadly disease, and not just a winter inconvenience. So what can you do to “boost your immunity”? There are numerous supplements that supposedly boosts one’s immunity, but it makes very little sense scientifically as scientists do not yet have answers as to how we can actually boost certain immune cells to keep us from falling ill. We can, however, keep our immunity in optimum shape with healthy living strategies like: • Do not smoke. • Eat a healthy diet, filled with fruits and vegetables. • Exercise regularly. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Control your stress levels. • Control your blood pressure. • If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. • Get adequate sleep. • Take steps to avoid infections - wash your hands regularly. • Regular medical screenings.

• “I’ve had the flu shot, so I can’t understand why I’m sick.” The flu shot will only protect you against about 70% of expected flu cases. The influenza vaccine only contains 3 strains of influenza serotypes. Over the last few years it always contained the H1N1 and two other strains. So if you get another strain you will not be protected. The flu shot will also not protect you against any other cold viruses or airway bacteria. • “I’m not having the flu shot, as it makes you sick.” It can’t. The influenza vaccine is a dead vaccine, and can’t make your sick. • “I’ve had the flu shot last year and thus won’t need it this year.” The pharmaceutical companies claim in their package insert that the vaccine will give you cover for almost one year. So that will last you one season only. Because the vaccines are changed almost every year or two, even if you might have cover for a bit longer, the strains in the current one might be different.

• “ My 6 month old baby is at home and not exposed to the flu viruses at the crèche.” Your baby can be exposed to the flu virus even when you are at the grocery store! Children under the age of 2 years are at a high risk for complications related to influenza. According to the World Health Organization recommendation, all children between the ages of s6 months and 5 years should get a yearly flu shot. So who should get a flu vaccination? A yearly flu shot is recommended for the following people: • Children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. • Persons above the age of 65 years. • Pregnant woman from their second trimester onwards. • Anyone working in the health care industry. • Anyone with a chronic disease, like diabetes or COPD. We are all exposed to this deadly virus. To some people it can be more dangerous than others, but we can all benefit from the vaccination. It is safe - let’s beat influenza this winter!
