Hazel’s Nature Nook By Jean Jonker

With the high cost of travel, more people are opting to stay at home during the holiday season. In many cases, they are transforming their homes to entertain their local family and friends in the comfort and security of their own “personal resort. This rising trend has been called Homecation and I cannot think of a better venue for a homecation than Hazeldean. Whether you’re enMoying the world-class facilities at The 5etreat, lazing next to the pool at Oukraal or sitting dead still trying to get that perfect photo of an Egyptian Goose at The 5idge, more and more people are trying to escape from the holiday crowd at the coast and other holiday resorts. Here are a few things you can look out for during the warm summer months in and around Hazeldean: Migrating birds that escape from the freezing European winter seek refuge in the warm Southern African summer. Swallows are the best known and can be seen building nests under roofs and overhangs. In addition to the wellknown %arn Swallow, Southern Africa is blessed with having numerous other Hirundo species, the maMority of which are Inter-Africa migrants.

See how many species of migrating birds you can spot this holiday.

5esident species – may have altitudinal movements: ‡ Wire-tailed Swallow – Hirundo smithii ‡ 5ock Martin – Hirundo fuligula

Bird and mammal paradise. %ester %irds and Animal =oo 3ark is a mere 10 minutes’ drive from Hazeldean. It provides a relaxing, educational and safe experience for animal lovers, whilst providing the animals with a comfortable place to live, with the best care possible. Many bird and mammal species can be seen and it is an ideal picnic spot. Contact %ester %irds and Animal =oo 3ark on (012) 07 41 2 for more information.

Inter-African migrants: ‡ Lesser Striped Swallow – Hirundo abyssinica ‡ Greater Striped Swallow – Hirundo cucullata ‡ White-throated Swallow – Hirundo albiglaris ‡ South African Cliff Swallow – Hirundo spilodera ‡ %lue Swallow – Hirundo atrocaerulea ‡ 3earlbreasted Swallow – Hirundo dimidiata ‡ 5edbreasted Swallow – Hirundo semirufa

Highveld Hidden Sanctuary. 5ietvlei Dam Nature 5eserve is a 15 minute drive from Hazeldean and you can truly escape into the highveld wilderness here. 5ietvlei has reintroduced Cheetahs into the reserve and Lion Tours are held daily. Other mammals you can spot here include White 5hinoceros, Hippo Eland and many more. This is also a bird watcher’s paradise so make sure you pack your camera.

Big cat tours. %ordering Hazeldean is a well hidden gem called Farm Inn. They do daily Lion and Game Tours. Contact Farm Inn on (012) 0 02 for more information.

EnMoy what nature has to offer this holiday season

Other species are:

Below left to right: The Wire-Tailed Swallow; the Barn Swallow.

5inging schemes are now underway throughout Southern and South Central Africa as well as in .enya Tanzania (Eastern Africa) and Swallows have also been ringed in Nigeria, so hopefully in time we may be able to get some feedback as to where the Inter-African migrants travel to. These birds breed in the Southern African region and migrate at around the same time as the %arn Swallow although they arrive back earlier than the %arn Swallow. This can be explained in the same manner as to why the %arn Swallow migrates north quicker than its southerly migration, and that is the most basic of instincts, the urge to breed.

Security tips over the festive season By Salmon Swart For many families, the holidays are known as the season for giving. %ut for burglars, it’s the prime season for taking. Stealing from you not only your hard-earned money, possessions, and new gifts, but also all the Moy and sense of goodness that the holidays are supposed to be all about. Here are a few tips that will help you enMoy the holidays without incident:

%urglars look for an easy entry with good escape routes. Don’t openly display your christmas tree and gifts in the front window so it’s easily visible from the street. It’s too tempting for them to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages. Check that your alarm system is working properly before you go on holiday. Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property. %urglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, or advertising Áyers hanging on the door knob. Ask a neighbour to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. <ou can give the appearance of being home by installing 2 or 3 light timers inside your home, and use timers to turn on a TV or radio while you’re gone. %urglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. Check doors and windows for weak spots. Government statistics show that 30% of burglaries happen through windows. Installing a few dead-bolts and new window hinges could increase the security of your home exponentially. Sliding windows that are not secure can be seen from a distance. One holiday problem can occur when exterior christmas light

extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured. Hire an electrician or handyman to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for your holiday lights. Never leave tools in your garden or an unlocked garden shed that would help intruders break into your home. After Christmas Day, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for the garbage man. %urglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. %reak them down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again are increased. Last, but not least, fortify your home by installing solid core doors, heavy duty locks, longer screws in the lock strike plates and door hinges, and install secondary security devices on all accessible windows.

‡

‡

Wanneer My Mou kind voer speel die speletMie: “Een happie pap vir Mou, een happie pap vir mammaâ€?; Wanneer My met Mou kind speel, speel: “Mamma ‡ gee vir Mou ‘n blokkie en My gee vir mamma ‘n blokkieâ€? (stuur kind se hand asof hy wel vir Mou die blokkie wil gee); ‘n %aba kan van vroeg af leer dat hy sy aandag moet deel, deur nie altyd dadelik in sy haar behoeftes te voorsien nie. SĂŞ byvoorbeeld aan ‡ Mou kind: “Mamma kan sien My wil hĂŞ ek moet Mou optel, maar ek trek nou eers gou vir boetie aanâ€?; “Jy wil met die karretMie speel, maar My sien boetie speel nou met die karretMieâ€?;

Dr. Magdaleen 3.
