HIGHLY COMMENDED RETIREMENT DEVELOPMENT SOUTH AFRICA The Retreat at Hazeldean by Sable Homes

Top: An eastern view of the progress of construction of the centre as at mid- January 2015. Right: A perspective of the completed building from the western side. It is of utmost importance that your purchase within a retirement estate includes the assurance of quality health care, including one of the most important elements – a frail care facility – in order to ensure comprehensive health care and support. Above the age of 50 years, an individual’s scenario can change at any time, due to the increased health risks, for example a stroke, heart attack, dementia, fractures and other related illnesses. “We can proudly announce that the highly anticipated frail care centre at The Retreat will be opening its doors on the 2nd of March 2015,” says Philip Potgieter, Managing Director of Sable Homes, the developer of the awardwinning Retreat at Hazeldean Retirement Estate. The Retreat recently won a Highly Commended award in the Best Retirement Development - Africa category of the International Property Awards. The awards rank amongst the most prestigious commendations in the residential and commercial property industry worldwide. The 1,800m² building, constructed by Sable Construction, is a 52-bed frail care centre, with 32 private rooms, as well as 4 wards with 5 beds each. All of the rooms are equipped with air- conditioners and flat screen television sets. The frail care centre has been connected to the existing clubhouse at The Retreat, and a further extension of the clubhouse, with staff quarters, storage rooms for equipment and more, was completed in 2014. The facilities and all services provided at the centre exceeds the requirements set by the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006, as well as the Housing Development Schemes

for Retired Persons Act 65 of 1988. Facilities include a nursing station with a 24-hour registered nurse on duty, dining room, recuperation-, treatment and therapy rooms. Beautiful spacious gardens are being created for residents to enjoy and flat screen television sets with full DSTV bouquets are available in all recordings, in order to monitor quality of service. the communal living areas. Other services available to frail care patients include 3 complete meals a day, with all menus and recipes compiled by a qualified dietician.

Hazel’s Nature Nook By Jean Jonker

Like many parents, I love spending time with my kids watching nature documentaries together. For many people Sunday lunch is followed by an afternoon nap. In our household lunch is followed by the whole family squeezing together on a couch to watch the latest documentary. One show that has caught our attention is about Wild Cities. A Wild City models a new urban relationship with wild nature. The show reveals the adaptation many animals rely on to survive in the ever increasing urban sprawl encrouching on their natural habitats. Many animals are thriving in these urban environments and the key to their survival lies in the cohabitation with humans. Some animals change their feeding patterns to be primarily nocturnal. Some actually utilise the concrete jungle to their advantage, for example the millions of pigeons we see in city centres. Now how does this affect us in Gauteng’s green leafy suburbs?

Top left to right and left: Some of the green belt and park areas in Hazeldean.

and Bushbabies enjoy the fruit trees we plant. I am not saying that urban expansion is a good thing for fauna and flora, but the way we plan our residential growth can limit the impact we have on our natural heritage. Green belts are a great example of how we can minimise the negative effect of urbanisation on wildlife. These little green sanctuaries create a safe haven for small mammals, birds and reptiles. We benefit by staying close to nature, Many birds thrive in the man-made forest we create in and having a little feature area on your estate gives you our gardens. If you glance out of your kitchen windows, the reassurance that you are doing your part to ensure chances are that you will see an Olive Thrush scraping our children will have a natural heritage. Next weekend through the leaves looking for a delicious bug for breakfast. when the kids are driving you up the wall, why not take Barbets can be seen in trees and Hadedas enjoy our newly them for a hike through the green belt in your Hazeldean cut lawns. Plovers prefer to build nests on sports fields estate to explore your Wild City.

Did you know? It was once believed that if a woman saw a flying Robin on Valentine’s day she would end up getting married to a sailor. If a Sparrow was the bird she saw she would end up marrying a man that was poor and live a happy life, if she saw a Goldfinch then she was to marry a man that was a millionaire. One can only wonder who she would marry if she saw a Crow.

Maintenance tips for your machine • • •

Visit the Elna shop at shop 38, Hazeldean Square Shopping Centre or you can contact Christine Fourie on 082 561 0708. You can also contact them by sending an email to • elna.silverlakes@telkomsa.net. •

Brush lint and dust from the machine each time • it is used. • Never leave your machine uncovered when not in use. Cover it with a sewing machine cover or put it in a sewing cabinet/machine case. Have an authorized dealer do basic maintenance on your machine at least every two years, • including cleaning, oiling, adjusting tension and a general test of working parts. Also have them stitch out a straight and zigzag seam to confirm tension. Don’t keep your machine in a dusty area. Change needles often.

Wash your hands before using your machine. Once your machine is lint free, you can lubricate it with the clear oil recommended in your owner’s manual. Do not use any other type of oil. Some newer machines DO NOT require lubrication at all. Refer to your manual. Wind bobbins correctly. Be sure there are no thread tails hanging from the bobbin when it’s inserted into the bobbin case. They can jam the machine and cause the upper thread to break. And note that there’s no such thing as a generic bobbin. Always use a bobbin designed for your machine.

Did you know? Historians suggest that Valentine’s Day was initiated during the third century in Rome. According to the popular story, Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men as he believed single men made better soldiers. However to contradict his views, a young priest named Valentine secretly continued to perform marriages for young lovers. Emperor Claudius sentenced Valentine to death when he learned about his love-deeds. In jail, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before he was put to death, he inked his last love letter to his beloved and signed it “From Your Valentine”, an expression still in use! Later, February 14th was declared as a day to honor Valentine.
