Popular cycle race coming to Hazeldean Node in August

Through collaboration with religious and civic groups they have established 1 000 informal day care centers that also serve as an ideal platform for the distribution of food. The cold snap that has hit Gauteng has done nothing to curb the enthusiasm ahead of the third leg of the 2015 Nissan Trailseeker Series to be held on 29 August at Curro College in Hazeldean, East of Pretoria. The Hazeldean event has always been fast and furious because of its relatively flat route profile, but with last year’s addition of a newfound climb adding 30% more elevation on the marathon route, things have been shaken up towards the sharp end of the race. This year’s race explores many of the mountain bike trails that have been built by organizers Advendurance, and others, over the last half a decade. The route for 2015 is very similar to the 2014 route with less overlap, tweaking the best bits and smoothing out the rest for your enjoyment. This event has been a favourite due to its central location in the booming suburb of Hazeldean, fantastic single tracks, mind-blowing, hand-built trails, exhilarating river crossings and fast farm roads. The Nissan Trailseeker Series continues to show amazing growth, which is only limited by the amount of people the organizers and venue can host on one day. 40% of the country’s mountain bikers are based in Gauteng, but prior to the Nissan Trailseeker Series, which started in 2009, there weren’t many good events in the province. The Nissan Trailseeker Series surpassed the Ashburton Investment National MTB Series as the biggest series on the continent and now has more participants in just 5 events than any other mountain bike series. The series has seen significant growth from 6666 participants in 2009 to 15 500 in 2014! To ensure the Nissan Trailseeker Series events cater for all ages and fitness levels, there are 4 distances at each event – 70km, 40km, 20km and a 10km race.

Don’t miss this race and the chance to catch up with some of South Africa’s best mountain bike talent. Hunger and thirst will be looked after. Great meals and snacks are on offer while sharing battle scars and war stories with your mountain bike buddies. Also on offer on the day will be a kids play area, bike bay & bike wash, free massages and more. Waterpoints will have water and USN energy drink and treats. Entries are bound to sell out again, so enter early to ensure you get a spot. Curro College takes part in world record attempt By Louise Werner Curro College Hazeldean recently helped non-profit organization, Judea Hope, to pack a record setting million meals. The meals were packed on 5 & 6 June 2015 by volunteers, including corporates, churches and schools, who each donated R25 000 for 60 boxes and 18 000 meals. Through a fun and engaging assembly line process, the volunteers each packed 18 000 meals in a 36 hour period. The meals are highly nutritious, dehydrated meals comprising of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals designed by a medical doctor and nutrition specialist.

Interesting statistics on the Million Meal Project: • 1 027 900 meals was packed this year. • It took 3 000 man-hours to pack the meals. • 1 box has 300 meals. • 1 packet has 10 meals. • An average cost per meal is R1.50. • The total cost for the 1 000 000 meals was R1 500 000. • The food weighs 44 tons in total. • The food was distributed to 1 000 day care centers across South Africa. “The event started on Friday, 5 June 2015, at 09:00 and we are very proud to say that at 16:45 on Saturday afternoon we reached the 1 000 000 goal which we had set for ourselves. Our attempt to set the record was therefore successful. After we reached the 1 000 000 meals we continued and packed 1 027 900 meals,” says Dr Louis Blom, President of Judea Hope. Documents pertaining to this world record have been sent to the Guinness World Records office for verification and the issuing of the certificate.

Hazel’s Nature Nook By Jean Jonker

Each year I dread the arrival of winter. The Kalahari High Pressure brings our dry months and with that the usual flu spells, veld fires and cloudless skies. This year I have decided to embrace the seasonal changes and the beauty it brings. Driving through Hazeldean I noticed that winter has been very mild so far, with only a little bit of frost around the watercourses and remarkable day time temperatures. As mentioned earlier, our winter climate is governed by the Kalahari High Pressure Cell that subsides over the interior and blocks the multiple cold fronts bombarding the Western Cape. This saves us from the winter rain, but creates perfect conditions for the spread of veld fires. Veld fires can cause major damage to properties, but is not necessarily bad for the environment. Smoke and heat are sometimes needed for the germination of seeds and clearing the environment of built-up biomass, and subsequently clearing the way for more palatable grasses. It might seem counter-intuitive that destruction can benefit the environment, but a successful ecosystem depends on cycles of new replacing old. The key word is prevention when trying to limit the risk of fire. Here at Hazeldean we limit the risk through firebreaks. A firebreak is a strip of land where vegetation has been removed or modified to contain or to reduce the spread and intensity of any veld fire that may occur in or around a property. When is a firebreak necessary? Landowners are required to prepare firebreaks on their side of the boundary where there is a reasonable risk of veld fires. If there is a reasonable risk, by not preparing a firebreak a veld fire could start or spread across his or her land, causing harm to someone else. What should I do to reduce my risk of veld fires? • If possible, make firebreaks around your home by using a mower, spade or rake and trimming branches well clear of the house. • Clean roof gutters of leaves, twigs etc. • Remove all rubbish, leaf litter and shrubs growing too close to the house. • Keep grass short and green. • Fit hoses to reach all parts of the house and garden. • Store wood, fuel, paints, etc. well clear of the house. • Decide on a household plan to either leave early or stay to protect your home during a veld fire. What do I do if I see there is a veld fire close to the estate? Contact your Estate Manager as he/she should have a contingency plan and will notify the correct authority to ensure that the fire will be controlled.

Abreal News The Hazeldean Node Maintenance Team faced some challenges due to the recent water issues. With the water now restored, the team is going full steam ahead with the redesign of the gardens in the estates they work in. They have planted seeds which have begun sprouting, and residents will soon begin to see the changes. They have also started with the gardens in phase 5 of The Retreat as construction has now been completed. The gardeners are even assisting some of the residents in the beautification of their own little gardens. The months of July and August are the ideal time to trim trees and the team have recently begun doing so in the Node. Thabang Sereetsi, a driver for the Hazeldean maintenance team has shown great potential, prompting Abreal to provide a bursary which will enable him to complete his degree in finance. He has been studying on his own for quite some time and is doing exceptionally well thus far. The Hazeldean Node Maintenance Team is available to do small, private maintenance jobs for residents in Hazeldean, can assist with the installation and repair of irrigation as well as gardening. For more information, please contact Marianne Botes or Remona van Seventer on 012 809 5702 or send an email to hazeldeannode@abreal.co.za Right, top and bottom: The Hazeldean Nodal Maintenance Team wearing their new uniforms; Thabang Sereetsi from Abreal.

Fleisherei’s biltong dries for an average of 12 days before being shipped to their stores. Fresh meat will always have a red colour due to the presence of oxygen. The moment the oxygen depletes, the red colour will fade into a brown colour. Fleisherei have vacuum packing facilities. Did you know? On August 12, 2012, the inaugural World Elephant Day was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants. There are two species of elephants, African and Asian, and while they are similar in physiology, they are too biologically different to interbreed. Recent scientific findings suggest that the forest-dwelling African elephant is a genetically distinct species, making it a third elephant species. The African elephant (Forest and Savannah) is threatened with less than 400,000 remaining worldwide. Tusks are found in African elephants of both sexes while only in Asian males. An African bull’s tusks can grow to over 11 feet long and weigh 220 pounds.

Hazeldean Office Park construction update By Andries Kotze The first building in Extension 36 has been completed and the Jacana Close and Flamingo buildings are currently under construction. Construction of these 2 buildings commenced in February this year and already more than 50% of the units in these buildings have been sold. At Jacana Close the brickwork have started and at Flamingo, the raft foundation has been cast and the concrete retaining walls are being constructed from the basement to the ground floor. Construction is expected to be completed by end of October 2015, with a potential trading date of 1 December 2015 for both buildings. Great care has been taken to ensure that the dam/wetland in the park is very well maintained and we are very proud about how well the wetland is performing. The water that gets held in the dam is used to irrigate the entire park’s landscaping and is currently almost at capacity. Sectional title office space in this A-grade office park is being sold with prices starting at R14, 500/m². Contact Monique Williams on 072 662 5661, or send an email to monique.williams@abland.co.za Top: Layout of the Hazeldean Office Park.
