PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Wow! 2014 arrives! Preparation for the 2014 Parade of Homes is in full swing! So many ways to be involved this year! All it takes is a phone call to Carolyn or Kelly at 352-3437101. Be a part of the American Dream! I want to take this opportunity to thank all the Committee Chairs. Without those of you who step up and take charge, this Association would not be able to stay open. Special events are planned for 2014 including the Parade of Homes led by Dale Roberts, the annual golf tournament led by Chuck Hiott, and the Home Show led by Don Magruder and the October Party/ Reverse Draw. You to can be a part of the excitement as all committees and councils are open to all HBA members unless otherwise noted. HBA staff are eager to find the perfect place to meet your needs while serving the association. Leading our team for 2014 is our Executive Director, Carolyn Maimone. She has proven to be a true asset for the association with the wealth of her knowledge and contacts. I just can not say enough about our Kelly, as she keeps our association's affairs running smoothly. Thanks to both of you and I look forward to a great year. As a reminder in closing, we have many uncertainties as we move into 2014 with the Impact Fee issues and product availabilities. Bottom line is we have been a part of the housing come back and refuse to be a part of a slowdown. Keep your spirits high and smiles on your faces! An HBA is only as strong as it's membership as there is strength in numbers. Make 2014 the year that you joined the action and earned the biggest return on your investment. I'll be right there with you. May we all have a prosperous and healthy New Year.

SALES AND MARKETING (SMC) Ten Tips to Create Community Buzz & Free Publicity for the 2014 Parade of Homes The 2014 Parade of Homes is just around the corner! Here are some tips to promote the event, the HBA, your Parade entry & create buzz within our community. BUT, you say you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a publicity campaign or media advertising? No problem. There are a lot of things you can do to let everyone know about the event. Best of all, they won’t cost a dime. Try these 10 tips for generating community buzz & free publicity: 1. Phone calls – It never hurts to pick up the phone & call your local newspaper, radio stations & other media outlets. If you already know someone, like the local real estate reporter, great – give them a ring & say you’ve got some information that local residents (their readers, listeners & advertisers) want to know. If you don’t know who to talk to, just ask. They’ll steer you to the right person covering real estate or government or even community news. You should follow up your call by sending them some of the materials you have on the market. Your phone’s voice mail message also offers an opportunity for promotion & publicity. 2. Email – Email is a great way to connect with people, even media types. Send a short, to-the-point email to your sphere of influence, letting family, friends, clients & local media know about the event. Give out the website address to the HBA (LakeSumterHBA.com), letting them know where they can find out more. You can also provide a link to the online Parade guide (we’ll share that with you soon!) encouraging people to visit the site, plan what homes they will want to tour, & get excited about this opportunity. Add a line to your email signature to serve as a reminder.
3. Social media – Take advantage of Facebook, Twitter, ActiveRain, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Houzz, & other social media networking sites. These sites offer a great way to quickly spread the word about events & activities. Connect to local cities on Facebook, & ask them to share your Parade entry with their audience, & don’t forget to blog! 4. Websites – Add fresh content to your website with the Parade logo, dates, & links to the HBA website & online guide, which you can grab off of the HBA website! 5. Newsletters, media releases, letters to the editor & radio announcements – Spread the word through your newsletters. Make a call & find out who should receive the release, whether it’s a reporter or the news editor. Many reporters may not be fully aware of the Home Builders Association of Lake-Sumter Parade of Homes. Write a personal letter to the editor – your passion will come through, & if they’re published, that’s valuable media coverage in a well-read section of the paper. Send the your press releases as scripts to local radio stations & suggest using them as public service announcements. 6. Community calendars – Any time you have a special event, be sure to provide information about it to local community organizations & media that keep community event calendars, including your cable TV provider/local community channel’s event calendar & online community event calendars offered by local neighborhood groups. 7. Put up posters & flyers – Take event posters & flyers to prominent locations around your city, such as libraries, college campuses, churches, downtown restaurants or businesses, & ask permission to post them. 8. Speak at community events – Ask if you can take a few minutes to mention the event at the next Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, PTA or any meeting of your professional associations, community groups & activities. Think of it as a public service announcement: Briefly talk about the market & the importance of the 2014 HBA Lake-Sumter Parade of Homes. 9. Sponsor a table at community events – At the next arts festival, health fair or other community event in your area, ask if you can bring some materials to share. 10. Word of mouth – Tell your friend, tell your neighbor, tell the parents around you the next time you’re waiting to pick up your child from band practice. Getting your hair trimmed? Discuss it with your barber or stylist. Word of mouth is the best kind of free & credible advertising. You tell a friend, they tell two friends and pretty soon, you’ve got the whole town talking!

Inspiration. Virtual and Reality. INSPIRATION is the theme of our 2014 Parade of Homes. Whether you have a Custom Home, Production Home, Green Home, Remodel, Virtual Entry or Showroom, you can inspire us all with an entry in the Parade of Homes. Entries are coming in and sponsors are signing up. Now is your chance to get on board for the HBA of LakeSumter 2014 Parade of Homes. We have had a lot of questions regarding our Virtual Entry category. Not to be confused with a Virtual Tour (Video), a Virtual Entry is nothing more than your Home that is not quite ready for viewing. You can provide renderings or photos and floor plans of a particular model and get all the exposure of a normal entry. One Half Page entry in the guidebook... 75,000 Guidebooks in Lake, Sumter, Seminole and Orange County! The VIRTUAL ENTRY is perfect for builders and remodelers who don't have a home that people can walk through but still want all the benefits of our Parade marketing! The HBA web site has all the information and forms you need for Parade Entries and Sponsorships. Our Dream Home/Community and Diamond Sponsor will be announced soon. If you have any questions regarding Virtual Entries or need help with your forms, please call Carolyn at the HBA Office. We are happy to help you with your entry. Don't wait. Do it today. Membership Committee As 2013 closes out and 2014 is just around the corner, I reflect back on how all of us have emerged from what has been a tough few years. I remember standing on a jobsite 4 years ago and feeling like the world was about to end as we knew it. Well folks it did not…. If you are reading this YOU survived what was the worst economy in our lifetime. With that said it was relationships that got me though it and probably got most all of you through it as well. Relationships with trades, suppliers, customers, employees, family and friends. Relationships, something that are the foundation of our existence. We all have a core to us that makes us feel comfortable with those closest to us. With that said, it is those closest to us that we need to bring into our inner circle, build relationships with and gain their trust and confidence with. Those relationships make us better people, contributors and business people. I challenge all of you, as well as myself, with doing this for 2014. Build your circles around you. Start with your core group of people that you do business with and have them join the HBA. By building your circle stronger you will in turn be building our circle as an organization. A circle of caring contributors to our industry and each other. I hope all of you have a great finish to 2013 and the most prosperous 2014.

Wow, what a great year. 2013 was full of new experiences and lots of good people. Thank you to all of you who came to the meetings and participated in all the adventures we had. I feel that I benefited the most by getting to know all of you better. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have been the Chairperson this past year. A special "Thank You" to all of the hosts we had this last year, from field trips to Harbor Hills and Oakland Park on the Muddy Boots tour to view Green Certified homes, and to West Orange Lumber to view their extensive operation. Our vendor presentations were unforgettable, Solid Image, ABC Supply, The Paint Drop by Valspar, Encore Stone and RoMac Design. We also were fortunate to have a couple meetings with our County Authorities with their wealth of knowledge. 2014 is looking like another year of interesting adventures. I am proud to announce your next Chairperson for the Remodeler's Council, Cynthia Couillard with Dibarco Building Corporation. Cindy is sure to bring some great new ideas and I hope you will all come join such an enthusiastic group. Just remember, there is power in numbers, so give your support.

Thank You! I can’t believe it has already been a year. I wanted to take a moment and say thank you. First, thank you to the 2013 Board of Directors, and the 2013 Committee Chairs who took me under their wing and “Broke me in” through our first year together. To all of the members for allowing me into your world and for making this first year as your Executive Director not only momentous, but educational and of course entertaining. And to Kelly Hoover, thank you for everything you do for the association. The Home Builders Association of Lake~Sumter, hands down, has the BEST group of members. I cherish your knowledge, patience and humor and hope to do so for many years to come. Again, thank you and I hope to see you at an event or meeting real soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Lumber & Commodity News The Home Builders Association Wood Commodity Index (Index) for December lost 4.0% as wintery weather took hold in many areas of the country forcing mills and manufacturers to scurry for buyers. As the holidays approach there appears little momentum for price increases and this could lead to a lackluster beginning to the New Year. In the wood portion of the Index, prices dropped 5.7% as spruce dimensional was in full retreat. The amount of the decline was directly related to the popularity and availability of the size. Studs were down 6.3% while 2x4-16 SPF gave back 5.7%. Pine dimensional lumber did not follow the direction of spruce. Narrow width pine was flat with wider widths trading up in the 3%-6% range. The sheathing portion of the Index was mixed, with CDX Plywood trading in a narrow range at par and OSB sheathing dropping $6-$10 per thousand. After the price gyrations in sheathing, the Index dropped 2.2% predominately on the weakness of OSB. If demand gets tangled up in bad winter weather, expect pricing to drift lower. Drywall, roofing, insulation, windows, doors and molding are just a few segments in which companies have announced price increases after the first of the year. While many of these companies will contend price increases are needed to remain profitable, how many are willing to increase these prices in a market with subdued sales. There could be some first of the year deal making which takes some of the wind out of the price increases announced for next year. As a builder you can’t bid a project for next year without taking in account all price increases, but when you issue purchase orders ask for current market pricing. Pricing realities change in the midst of a dark, cold winter. Have a wonderful holiday season and prosperous New Year.
Don Magruder Governmental Affairs (GA) Your local GA Committee has been hard at work. Several members met with the Lake County Manager, Attorney and staff to ask for the same rules as they applied to Commercial for Impact Fee collection at CO. After some very good discussion the County offered up a solution that is a win-win for the County and local Builders. When a Licensed Contractor pulls a permit, the GC can choose to defer payment of the Impact Fees until CO, freeing up much needed capital to build homes. If in the infrequent occasion a family moves into the home before the CO is issued, the GC’s license will be suspended in Lake County until the Impact fees are paid and the CO is issued. Putting the ownership of impact fee collection on the Builder, instead of the County. All the members in attendance at this special meeting were very happy with this solution. The Board of County Commissioners voted on Dec 17th to approve these changes to the Impact Fee Ordinance. This is a prime example of what the GA committee does for the members of the HBA.
