PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I hope everyone had a great May and a fantastic Memorial Day Holiday! By now you must know that May was our Spring membership drive month! This membership drive, you earned TRIPLE Spike points for every new member recruited. I would like to thank our staff, Carolyn & Kelly for their creativity on the marketing to help our membership drive be such a success. Our drive may be over, but we still need everyone's help to increase membership, participation and help get new members involved in this great Association. We have a second drive coming in September when we again earn Triple Spike points. So, talk to the companies you do business with as everyone benefits from being a member. We must keep the momentum going as our power is in numbers. The involvement this year by our members has been incredible. Every year we find new ways to network, educate and draw more attention to Lake & Sumter County. For any of you that didn't get the memo, we just held CAPS 1, CAPS 2 and Business Management classes at the HBA office. These are National Certified Aging in Place Designations. We had people come from as far as Missouri to take these courses. Way to go team for bringing these courses to our Association! It would be fantastic if we can continue to use the HBA office for this caliber of education. I do want to thank Wanda Gozdz, NAHB CAPS Trainer, from North Hutchinson Florida, for a great three days of Education. If any of you are interested in furthering your Education or know anyone who would benefit from these great classes, she also provided us with a list of available certifications. We would have to have enough interest in a course to be able to offer them. Please contact the office or talk to us at a GMM meeting. Mark your calendars for our 1st Annual HBA Bowling Tournament and Family Fun Day! We are holding it at Break Point Alley in Tavares on Saturday, June 21st. Start picking your team of 4 and get practicing! This one is sure to be a day packed with fun and laughs. All are welcome. We have lots of sponsorship opportunities available, so call the office if you are interested. Again, Members doing business and having fun with members. The more you put into the Association, the more you get out of it. Are you leaving money Time again for the SEBC! Learn. Build. Grow. (Kind of sounds like the current motto of our Association!) The dates are July 24- 26th at the Orlando Convention Center. Come see what's new in the products for our industry. The participants and suppliers go all out on their displays as well as door prizes. There are also opportunities for education, continuing education and the FHBA meetings. Have you been thinking of joining a committee? Get involved! It is how you can network and get the most from your membership. I am always amazed at the interesting things I learn about these top notch people I have been blessed with this opportunity to get to know.

SALES AND MARKETING (SMC) Ten Tips To Build A Thriving Business
It’s time for summer vacations! Do you unplug yourself from your electronics while on vacation? Do you recharge your own batteries by doing things you love, traveling, or visiting friends and family? I think those are important activities to rejuvenate ourselves, so that we have fresh energy when we get back to our work. I am a firm believer that we need to take care of ourselves so we can be good to everyone else that needs us! But don’t let the summer months stop you from your continual efforts to talk to your customers and contacts. If you are not communicating with your clients on a regular basis, they will become someone else’s clients. Here are ten tips to help keep you focused on growing a thriving business: 1. Build a large database of folks you know on a first name basis. The average person knows 120 people by their first name! 2. Communicate with this database on the phone with a purpose: educating them about your business, services, or market conditions; qualifying them to see if they are really still a prospect or know someone who might be a prospect; and lastly, receiving permission from them to continue communicating with them. Be a good listener and learn what is going on with them. 3. Maintain consistent telephone communication at least every 60 days. 4. Implement a monthly, value added newsletter. Find business partners to offer discounts for their products or services. Cross marketing is a great tool! 5. Host social events each quarter and get people together to network. 6. Incorporate an effective post sales service system. Follow up to ensure that you delivered your promises.
7. Always acknowledge all referrals immediately. Call and write a personal thank you note. 8. Continually grow your preferred data base. 9. Track, monitor, and analyze your results weekly. Systems do work! 10. Decide how many clients you need in your preferred database to achieve your annual income goal. You have to exceed expectations to gain loyal customers, and loyal customers are satisfied customers. By intentionally mastering your prospecting skills and growing a preferred database, the end result is a thriving business on purpose, not merely a surviving business on accident.

Parade Committee forms subcommittees, creating focus for success. One of those subcommittees is our Parade Sponsorship Committee. Eric Love of Valspar Paint has graciously volunteered to head up Sponsorship recruiting. With the help of Eric and his committee we will be hitting the pavement early to secure sponsors for the 2015 Parade. The Parade isn't until February 2015. Why so early? I'm so glad you asked. The sooner we lock in our major sponsors the sooner we can formulate our 2015 Parade Marketing - and the sooner our sponsors can take advantage of all things Parade. First and foremost, we want our sponsors to achieve great success before, during and after the Parade. How do we achieve that? By tailoring a marketing program that maximizes opportunities. Besides our standard published benefits that include things like ads in the Guidebook, Newsletter promos, Web and Social Media presence, POH Communications, Press Releases, and Awards Ceremony Program, we can do things like, IE: allow a major auto dealer sponsor the opportunity to park vehicles in the driveway of all Parade entries, promote themselves at the Awards Ceremony and provide vehicles to drive judges on judging day. Imagine the sponsorship opportunities we can dream up with a mortgage lender, bank, title company, real estate broker, pool builder, pest control, landscaping company, developer, solar power or water purification systems provider... the list goes on. If your company becomes a major sponsor at the Gold Level or higher, your company will be the only service provider in your industry at that level. Start laying the ground work for 2015 and join forces with the Parade of Homes. If you are interested in becoming a major sponsor or know of anyone who would benefit from Parade Marketing, please contact Eric Love, Valspar or Carolyn Maimone, EO at HBA of Lake-Sumter for more information. We're just getting started and already the excitement is building! Wishing you and your business continued success.
Dale Roberts Dale E Roberts & Associates 2015 Parade Chair
Can I quote you on that? A 2014 PARADE SPONSOR SAID - "The exposure sponsorship gives us also let’s our builder partners know how committed we are to their success. We were proud to be a major sponsor of the 2014 POH and look forward to more participation in the years come."

Membership Committee The membership drive is over. As predicted the Associates gave a serious "beat down" to the builders but the end result is that we gained new members, we are building some new relationships, and it was all in good clean fun.
Until the fall drive we will continue to concentrate on retention as our #1 goal. Each of us has the ability to help to retain current members. This starts with calling upon them for new business, building alliances and rapport between competitors, and attending our General Membership meeting to make new friends and expand our circles and relationships within the membership. Let me extend our congratulations to all of the members that brought in new members but especially the Associates for a job well done! Remember - this is a relationship business. People do business with who they know and trust. Build your circles of trust around you by meeting new members and opening your minds to change. Success begins where your comfort zone ends…. Members do business with members!

This month the Remodelers & Green Council will go on a field trip and do a walk through of the Lake County Animal Services Building on 561 in Tavares. We have the visit scheduled for Wed June 4th at Noon. The committee will meet at Billy’s Café on Hwy 19 and have a nice lunch, then continue on to Animal Services. There are many needs at the Shelter, and the first and most important is the health and well being of the animals and employees that are there day in and day out. The building has a lot of structural and cosmetic issues and the Remodelers/Green Council will be looking at these issues to determine if the HBA and its members can offer up some assistance to ease the pain. We hope that you will join us and help with some input as we take the tour. Please call Kelly @ 352-343-7101
RSVP by June 3 so we can let Billy’s know how many to expect for lunch.

It was eye opening and very educational to see what all National offers and how they can help us at the local level. Did you know that you can call the Legal Hotline at National for free and get legal advice pertinent to your location? They will also help you if you have a legal battle to fight. If you ever find yourself needing assistance give us a call and we will use the State and National sources that we have to help you however we can. Thank you to the Board of Directors for allowing me to take that trip. The scholarship that I obtained from National paid for almost all of my expenses. It was well worth the time and money invested! Last but definitely not least, the HBA is finally getting a REAL logo!! Thank you to all the marketing experts out there that submitted their ideas!! The final touches are being made now, we will announce the winner of the Logo contest and you will start seeing the transformation in early June!!!

Lumber & Commodity News It is amazing what a commodity market can do in 30 days. The Ro-Mac Lumber & Supply, Inc. Wood Composite Index increased 9.5% to $341.40 per thousand with all items advancing. Maybe the spring thaw is giving way to a summer run in building, which could bolster wood commodity pricing. Momentum in late May appears to be waning for continued large increases; however, the trajectory appears upward. The market’s ability to sustain these pricing levels is the best indicator as to the health of housing. The dimensional lumber portion of the Index increased 4.8% to $392.64 per thousand. Spruce studs were up 6.8% while dimensional 2x4-16 increased 2.0%. Wider width pines were up 2.8% to 4.5% while 2x4-16 pine increased 8.3%. Trucking continues to be a major problem in the lumber market, and this could help keep the market firm. Sheathing products in the Index were very strong as lower inventories and pent-up demand collided. OSB sheathing added on average $33.00 per thousand or $1.06 per sheet. Standard CDX pine plywood added $52 per thousand on 1/2” and $57 per thousand on 5/8”. A price increase of $1.66 per sheet on 1/2" CDX in one month can put builders in negative territory. Housing demand is the mover in the market. Unless an unexpected weather event occurs, pricing will probably follow housing starts. Interestingly, in many other areas of the building supply chain manufacturers are trying to hold onto pricing and put them upwards because of continued cost increases in manufacturing. Builders should expect higher prices across the board over the next month or so. One cautionary warning for all builders in regards to pricing is that last week the Wall Street Journal reported the Obama administration is contemplating a dramatic change in course and policy in regard to mortgage rules and lending. The ability to get credit by ordinary people is the reason why the housing recession persists and the economy of the country continues to flounder. If Washington has seen the light and, indeed, loosens credit to allow ordinary qualified citizens to get mortgages then the flood gates of pent-up demand will open. The supply chain would not be able to handle a sudden surge in business and prices would skyrocket. Unfortunately, it would be very painful for those builders that bid a project in the long-term. Now is a wonderful time to make sure you have a price escalation clause in your contract.
