2017 Homearama Wrap-Up:

Overview Indicates a Positive Impact on Business By Nancy Miller Perry Lyons of P. L. Lyons Architectural Builders didn’t anticipate the large crowds that toured the three homes his company presented at Homearama 2017, but he’s not complaining. “The number of visitors that came through was phenomenal and the quality of leads we got was one of the best I’ve ever seen,” he said. Those visitors have already translated into business for him. “I usually don’t get results from Homearama for six weeks to six months. This year was very different. People were ready to beat interest rates and the uncertainty of lumber prices. We’re already drawing plans for three new clients from Homearama.” Artisan Signature Homes’ Jason Black concurred about attendance, noting that he thought Poplar Woods, being farther out than some past sites, might attract a lighter crowd. “That wasn’t the case, and on the last day we couldn’t have possibly fit any more people in the house. There was a line to the street at times. Before the show we wondered how our shingle-style

Hamptons House would be received. We got lots of positive responses, even from people from Massachusetts, Florida, Texas and Missouri who came to see the house after following us on social media.” As it was for Lyons, the show was a quick business generator for Black, producing several leads and one definitive sale to date. This was Caliber Homes and Remodeling’s first year in Homearama. It was a very good year, according to Wesley Williams, who reported an uptick for his business, thanks to the show. “There was quite the uproar to get new homes underway. The fast pace surprised me as did the people who came through two or three times. Some even came back the second or third day. They went out of their way to say they loved the house. That’s nice and makes all the hard work worth it.” Participating designers were equally enthusiastic, sharing their experiences with Louisville Builder. “The crowds were fantastic. We have many solid leads and appointments. Homearama is a great method of advertising

and the perfect opportunity to showcase everything we do and to let people know that we’re a one-stop shop,” said Lisa Knight of Lisa Lynn Designs Home Store & Design Studio. A variety of interior styles were on display, piquing the interest of homeowners whose tastes ranged from traditional to transitional to contemporary. “Our home was more traditional than the one we did last year, which I think is appealing to the masses. Everyone appeared to like the outdoor living space, an entire screened in porch, where the outdoors became an extension of the indoor space. And they were intrigued by the Peerless Distillery bourbon display in the basement,” recalled Marsha Riggle of Tassels.

“I feel like this year’s show was very manageable. It went very well. I was thrilled. I tried to be at the front of the house and greet visitors as much as possible. That’s a good place to be because you get to hear opinions. I was so happy that I heard such positive comments about the show and about our house,” said Christine Dever of Cherry House Furniture Galleries. Karista Hannah of Set the Stage has booked at least ten new client consults as a result of Homearama. “This was our ninth Homearama house. We think it’s a terrific event for displaying the latest trends in home design. People who came through had really interesting questions and seemed more engaged than in the past.”

It was a great turnout on July 14th for the BIA members-only preview party. September 2017 • Louisville Builder Magazine

JCPS Students Go “Back to School” to New Construction Training Programs

Iroquois High School students’ He Shed/She Shed Competition that BIA sponsored in 2016.

NAHB Student Chapter at Shelby County High School show off their IBS competition awards.

Beginning with a meeting with BIA member and elected JCPS School Board member, Stephanie Horne, the BIA Workforce Development Committee and staff has spent several years building an innovative partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools. This partnership, which evolved via events like “He Shed/She Shed” with Iroquois High School at the 2016 Home Garden and Remodeling Show, as well as multiple meetings with JCPS officials, allowed just over 100,000 JCPS students to return to school on August 16th to new construction trades programs at eight area high schools in the district! JCPS students can now pursue a career pathway program in carpentry, electric, welding, HVAC, and plumbing as part of the new Talent Development Academy high school model, which partners employers and higher-education institutions to prepare students for various career paths. Not only is our Association the industry liaison for all trades programs, but our members have further stepped up by donating equipment for new

construction programs, reviewing curricula for new trades programs, serving on Advisory Committees, and recruiting potential instructors! “Hearing time and again from so many of our members the great need to assist in recruitment of a new pipeline of workforce assets, we are finally seeing headway in those efforts. Every school system that we have approached has been very willing to assist in the need to provide graduating students with careers in our industry, whether straight from high school or after college graduation. We have come a long way in a short period of time, but the work is not yet complete. We need to follow through and be sure that these initiatives are successful, and that will take help from our entire Association,” commented Pat Durham, BIA Executive Vice President. Please “stay tuned” for more information on this huge step forward in building our construction workforce pipeline in the October issue of the Louisville Builder!

Our 2017 Tour of Remodeled Homes… …What a Weekend It Was! An outstanding weekend featuring the craftsmanship and design of our BIA remodelers—the 2017 Tour of Remodeled Homes—is now in the books. And what a weekend it was! With the weather cooperating beautifully, guests were able to see 11 spectacular remodel projects featuring everything from a century-old home, to a “beach house” in the Highlands, to a home with former maid’s quarters and even a 1970s bachelor-pad turned designer showcase! Our 32nd annual event had a terrific crowd, with each home seeing several hundred guests come through their doors. “We had a great turnout this year, over 600 people. [We] generated a few good leads immediately, and we were also able to show off our work to a few potential clients that we had met prior to the Tour,” said Jeff Smith with Redsmith Construction LLC, a long time participant on the Tour. He went on

to say, “Having our homeowners on-site talking with visitors was a big help. The satisfied client is always your best salesperson.” Joe French, Louisville Handyman and Remodeling, has participated in the Tour for the last eight years. About this year’s event, he said, “This year we had the kids of the family who grew up in the house come by to see what had been done to their family home, and they were thrilled!” He definitely believes the Tour positively impacts his business and generates future work, as he went on to say, “Two of our remodel projects this year came directly from the Tour last year.” This year’s Tour provided so many unique and artistic elements, it would be hard to name just one feature that was a crowd favorite. However, spectacular kitchens once again were at the top of the list, as pointed out by Ben Tyler, Ben Tyler Building & Remodeling, who said, “The quartzite

countertops and clever kitchen cabinet design elements generated the most interest [this year].” “Participating in the Tour of Remodeled Homes was an exciting opportunity that allowed us to showcase our design in construction capabilities to breathe new life into old homes. This historic home renovation was the perfect example of how we are challenged daily with marrying modern design themes with the integrity and timeless character of the original home,” commented first time Tour participant, Christopher Eldridge with Eldridge Company. He went on to say, “[we] felt that the 2017 Tour of Remodeled Homes was extremely well attended, and that the majority of its attendees already had a renovation project in mind. We had the great opportunity to hear many creative and inspirational ideas for projects, and were able to provide our insight as to how those projects could be brought to life.” “This year’s Tour of Remodeled Homes showed the vast range of skill and expertise from our remodelers and industry experts. The motto of, ‘If you can dream it, we can build it,’ was on full display, transforming afterthoughts into brand new transformations,” said Pat Durham, BIA Executive Vice President. “We thank our remodelers, designers and industry professionals for their great efforts and fine work. I can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves for next year!” We’d also like to thank our 2017 Tour of Remodeled Homes sponsors— Bonnycastle Appliance & TV and Old National Bank. Without your generous support, we could not have put on such a tremendous event for the city of Louisville. Be sure to save your spot on next year’s Tour—THE most-anticipated remodeling event in Louisville! Information on the 2018 tour, being held August 11 – 12, will be sent out to remodelers by Margie Brangers [BIA] early next year.

Key Homes, LLC & Homes for Hope Invest in the Dreams of the Poor Longtime BIA member, Key Homes, LLC, alongside Homes for Hope, a charitable organization that operates within the building industry, teamed up to build a house that [once sold] will use the profit to fight global poverty. This is done by investing the maximized profit into entrepreneurs in underdeveloped countries— allowing them to generate income, provide for their families and create jobs within their communities. Teresa Bautista, for example, runs a small sewing and mending business in the Dominican Republic. This program allowed her to purchase a foot-action Singer sewing machine—which transformed her business. “I was inspired to get involved with the Homes for Hope organization from the moment I met them at an IBS [International Builders Show] 40-Under-40 panel I participated on. I could tell instantly that their unique program offers more than just a hand out… it’s a hand up. Their model of fighting global poverty—which encourages people in underdeveloped countries to grow a business and create jobs within their communities—is both effective and sustainable. As a business owner myself, this mission resonated with me on both a personal and professional level,” said Billy Doelker, Key Homes LLC. “The Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville is blessed to have so many of our members who take the time and effort to give back to our community. I am almost constantly amazed at the generosity of our membership. We applaud Billy Doelker and Key Homes for their efforts in participating in the Homes for Hope project. It is great to see them make a positive difference by taking on this meaningful initiative,” said Pat Durham, Executive Vice President of the BIA.

Fallen Officer Nick Rodman Deck Project BIA members have started building a new deck and covered porch this summer for the wife and children of LMPD Officer, Nick Rodman, who died in the line of duty on March 29, 2017. As a family, they had planned to add a deck to the back of their house, and BIA members have stepped in to fulfill that vision. The deck spans the width of the house and will create a large outdoor space for the family. Members have also stepped in to donate patio furniture, lighting and landscaping— completing the outdoor living package. BIA members have, in fact, made so many additional monetary donations, that the Rodman’s dream of a Catholic education for their two children, Mason and Ellie, may become a reality. We are proud of our members for their support, willingness to help a family in need and generosity of spirit. “The generosity of our Association and its members is humbling. And we need to give a big “shout out” to Pete Thieneman of Clifford Thieneman Co., LLC for taking this project on. To assist in any way to help the Rodman family during their time of need is a very rewarding experience for all who have given freely of their time, treasure and talents,” said BIA Executive Vice President, Pat Durham.

BIA of Greater Louisville Receives Government Affairs Award at Association Management Conference in Denver At the NAHB Association Excellence Awards ceremony in August, the BIA was formally recognized for the best Regional Government Affairs effort in 2016. Annie Dutton, VP of Government Affairs, was on hand to receive our award. We were recognized by the NAHB for our statewide grassroots advocacy campaign to amend the Kentucky Plumbing Code to allow the use of PVC piping in buildings of any height. The BIA’s year-long statewide advocacy initiative eliminated outdated regulations requiring cast iron piping to be used in building over 45 feet in height. “As a result of our efforts to amend our state Plumbing Code, planned development projects will realize more than $10 million in savings in 2017 alone,” stated Annie Dutton, BIA Vice President of Government Affairs. “I am very proud of the strong advocacy efforts of our members to achieve this muchneeded regulatory change that is already spurring economic development and job growth in Kentucky.” Search by Keyword

“It is truly an honor for the hard work and leadership of the BIA’s members and staff to be recognized by NAHB with this award,” said Pat Durham, BIA Executive Vice President. “Whether it was meeting with the Governor and his staff, travelling to Frankfort to lobby our elected officials or reaching out to key business allies across the Commonwealth, our year-long efforts were instrumental in leveling the playing field for economic development projects in Kentucky.”
