The 2019 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show
A Twist on Traditional By Nancy Miller
Several new features and enhancements are planned for the 71st annual Home, Garden & Remodeling Show, the largest, longest running, locally-owned home show in the region. About 350 vendors are expected to participate and transform the nearly 7 acres of event space. An expanded local artisan market is expected to be a major draw as there is a burgeoning interest in works created by an amazing community of area craftsmen and purveyors. The Show will offer an opportunity to meet local artisans, view their work and purchase their one-of-a-kind creations. Attendees to the Show have returned year after year to interact with exhibitors and to learn more about specific 20

products and services. This year’s event promises an even greater display of the latest trends and technology and myriad vendors for the home and garden, all of whom are eager to share their expertise. The 2019 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show will introduce new features such as: - An area of boutiques and individuals that specialize in customizable and unique items for the home and garden. Seeing will be only part of the fun! Visitors will be able to make purchases on-site from these exhibitors. Think of this
“People have been pent up in their homes all winter and are chomping at the bit to do something productive or inspiring.” - Joe French, Louisville Handyman
enhancement to the show as a one-of-a-kind retail experience! Take home something for your home! - A lively and instructional DIY Workshop where attendees will be invited to make something “home-related.” At a clay studio, they’ll be able to make personalized items alongside instructors on the potter’s wheel or choose an item for a “grab and glaze” project. - “Pick and plant” offerings will give attendees a more personal approach to gardening. - Entertainment! You’ve heard the phrase, “And, there’s more!” Never has it been truer than at this year’s Show. “I don’t want to give away any surprises but I’ll say we will have a new aspect to the traditional “entertainment” portion of the Show that will be sure to ‘wow’ guests,” says Ally Adams, BIA Director of Events. The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show returns as Louisville’s premier spot to view and walk through spectacular garden/outdoor living areas. Relaxing, dining and entertaining outdoors are becoming more integrated into today’s lifestyle. The Show will demonstrate the most imaginative and enjoyable ways to take advantage of an outdoor garden, patio or deck. It will plant the seed (literally!) for beautiful
gardens and landscapes and inspire stunning hardscapes. Guests will again gather around the Home and Garden stage for a variety of seminars conducted by experts in their fields. It will be where “How To” turns into “Let’s Get Started!” The tiny home craze can be seen on television and in magazines. What’s it all about? Is it only a fad or is it the next big thing (make that little thing) in housing? The majority of opinions may lean to the latter but we predict introduction of the tiny cabin will be a huge hit at the show. A specially designed Kid’s Area will catch the attention of the younger audience. Families will have the opportunity to decorate their own mini pot and plant a flower seed (just in time for a Mother’s Day bloom!) There will also be the opportunity to view and touch some of the most beautiful and unique specimens in the bug kingdom. A variety of native tree sapling will be given away at the Show and include information on planting and caring for your tree. Forestry professionals will be on hand to help you select the best tree for your yard or advice on best places to plant your new addition. Taking home a sapling will be the start to refreshing many yards and to spearheading or reinforcing homeowners’ interest in becoming an active player in ecofriendly living. “The community looks forward to the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show every year. They want to feel and touch products versus simply looking at them online,” says Scott

Welch, of Welch Builders, and President of BIA. He also attributes the interest in the Show to the wide range of exhibitors that represent the many facets involved in building or remodeling a home. And he’s especially enthused about the additional elements that are being added to this year’s home and garden extravaganza. Louisville Handyman and Remodeling’s Joe French regards the Show as the starting gun for the spring remodeling season. “People have been pent up in their homes all winter and are chomping at the bit to do something productive or inspiring. We love to participate in the show because we make so many new relationships and start dialogues that down the road can lead to new sales. And it gives us the chance to reconnect with existing customers,” he says. His booth will include many photographs of Louisville Handyman and Remodeling projects as well as the company’s 3D software that enables visitors to envision possible designs. Andrew Johnson and his company, River Bed Builders, are returning to the show as exhibitors after a very successful participation last year. That will be good news to the families who enjoyed River Bed’s gorgeous fountain and fullyfunctioning koi pond where children could feed the fish and turtle. “We’ll have a koi pond and a pondless waterfall to show some of the things that can be done in a backyard. People are so busy with work and gadgets and all the things that distract them from relaxing that a great backyard can bring them a lot of pleasure. Just having a patio or fire pit can be boring, but having interactive features like a koi pond or fountainscape draw everyone outside.” Louisville Generators will be one of the many companies that provides important advice in addition to displaying products. “We’ll have two different size generators and will answer any questions attendees may have about generators. We’ll talk with them about the types of generators they need for any situation and we’ll cover what’s involved in installation,” says Hobert McGuire.

Roy Mills of KY Barnwood Kennels is also eager to return as an exhibitor, saying, “Most people didn’t realize that a product of our offering exists until they met us at the Show. We offer very unique and customizable kennels equipped with lighting and endless color options for the finish. The amount of attention we received was unbelievable and led to immediate sales and future orders. Both of our sons, our German Shepherd and our Chihuahua will join us in our booth again this year. For us, it’s a real family affair.”

I See a Red Door and I Want to Paint It...? We all know a fresh coat of paint is the quickest, most cost-effective way to transform a space. However, the color options are endless!

It’s easy to end up either frozen with indecision, or hastily picking a color … and immediately regretting it when the pale, creamy yellow you loved ends up fluorescent lemon meringue on the wall. While the good news is it is just paint and you can do it again next year or next week, there are some ways to be smart about choosing the right color. So where do you start? Mick Soeder of Briteway Painting shared some advice. His key tip?-“Give it more time than you think,” he said.
26
2019 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Guide & Magazine
“Don’t hurry the process. It could take a couple weeks.” Choosing paint is an emotional decision, he said, that you don’t want to make at the last minute. Start by browsing for inspiration on Pinterest or in magazines. Keep in mind the other elements in the space, like flooring and furniture, Soeder said. These things not only bounce light, affecting the wall color, but they’ll be there a lot longer than the paint color will. Once you’ve narrowed down some favorites, head to the paint store for
“Look at it in bright daylight, on a cloudy day, and at night.” This is where you might learn that Louisville’s frequent overcast days mean a color you loved on a Florida wall doesn’t quite work here.

swatches. Remember that screens and printers render colors differently, so to match the color you loved online, you may actually need to go with one a few shades lighter or darker, or even in another hue. The next test is to see how those samples look in your own home. “That’s a lot closer to what will end up on your wall,” Soeder said. “Look at it in bright daylight, on a cloudy day, and at night.” This is where you might learn that Louisville’s frequent overcast days mean a color you loved on a Florida wall doesn’t quite work here. Or that a color that’s beautiful in a south-facing room isn’t right in one flooded with morning light. Choose your finalists, then get samples of each, and paint test runs on several walls; that’s important because each

wall reflects light differently. “Live with those for a few days,” Soeder said, “and the one that you keep going back to, keep admiring, that will be the color.” Of course you’ll want to weigh what’s currently in vogue. That doesn’t mean you have to paint everything the Pantone Color of the Year, but nobody wants their home to look like 1985 called and wants their dusty blue back. Trendy and bold colors that are hot now (think jewel tones) aren’t destined to last, Soeder said. If you want to add a pop of a hot color, go for an accent wall, or small room that’s easy to repaint, he said. Or go for something like a pewter gray that’s popular but not going to date itself immediately. Then again, if it’s the color you love, just go for it, Soeder said. “Regardless of trends, you’re the one living there so don’t be afraid to do something unusual if you love it.”

TAKE IT
OUTSIDE Outside Is The New Inside, With Inspired Landscaping and Outdoor Living Areas If you’re thinking of extending your living space outdoors, you’re not alone. “Everybody’s just moving their living room outside,” says Ricky Dyer of Living Water Landscape. “TVs, kitchens, sinks, the whole nine yards.” TVs, outside? Of course! “When you have big parties, you have people inside and outside, this way they don’t miss any of the game,” he says. This move outdoors is part of a trend toward making the space outside your home as thoughtfully designed as the inside. Homeowners are increasingly adding firepits, seating, water features, pergolas, pizza ovens, and more to the space that used to just be a backyard. Landscape lighting – including popular new lighting in the eaves of the house that shine down instead of up, according to Dyer – and colorful plants and shrubs round out the outdoor experience. Of course these elements are part of a bigger picture, and before you just run out and buy a firepit, the whole scenario needs to be considered. “Look at it from a holistic standpoint,” says Grant Jones of Jones Landscape + Design. Whatever your current budget, keep your eventual goals in mind even if you can’t do everything at once, he advises. “It’s easier to take away, or decrease size or scale, than to come in with a small

scale plan and add to it,” he adds. When you’re designing this plan, “keep in mind what kind of environment you’re in,” Jones says. “Watch the sun, how it works in your yard.” There’s more to it than rising in the east and setting in the west, he notes. Patterns differ from season to season and planting materials should be chosen accordingly to thrive in those conditions, whether it’s full sun, partial, or shade. Then of course there’s the ground itself to evaluate. Especially in Oldham county and eastward, says Dyer, “where the ground
32

is clay, ugh, it’s hard to deal with. Sometimes you might have to add a little topsoil, till it, make it plantable.” Surroundings and a plant’s rate of growth are another consideration. “You might plant something that’s two feet tall but it can outgrow that space in five years and you have to rip it out,” says Jones. Whereas if you’re looking for privacy or to soften a wall, you might need something that grows faster. A rule of thumb, Jones says, is to stick with plants that are available for sale locally. That flowering plant you love on Pinterest may do great in Bali, but not so much here. But “if you can buy it here, it’s most likely going to survive here,” he says. Build on a mixture of types and sizes of plants. Jones suggests an evergreen base “to give you something year round,” then mix in some color with blooming plants – being careful to choose plants that bloom at various points between spring and fall. Just remember, upgrading your lawn and outdoor spaces is a long game. “The most important thing I think when I design is not ‘what will it look like when I put it in,’” Jones says, “but what will it look like in five, 10, 20 years?”

Choosing a Registered Builder or Remodeler By Nancy Miller
When considering building a new home or remodeling an existing home, it’s critical to select the right individual or company for your individual project. It is a decision that will help determine the quality and cost of your remodel or new construction. The Building Industry Association of Louisville has Registered Remodeler and Registered Builder members who:
• Are informed about new products. • Are linked to a network of industry professionals on the local, state and national level. • Have a commitment to continuing education. • Have the ability to address special building issues/ techniques. • Have access to a conciliation process should problems arise that cannot be easily resolved. • Have experience in the home or commercial construction profession for a specified period of time. • Have demonstrated financial and on-site responsibilities. • Are a full-time professional who derives his or her principal income from construction, remodeling or related real estate activities. • Have submitted the names of previous customers as references • Have Registered Remodeler or Builder sponsors with personal knowledge of their remodeling/ construction activities and business integrity. • Must have acceptable credit history. • Appear before a committee for a personal interview. • Must agree to take part in continuing education. • Must agree to abide by the Code of Ethics of the BIA.
Checklist for Hiring a Registered Builder or Registered Remodeler • It’s also important that you become familiar with the business of a prospective remodeler or builder and that his or her experience relates to your individual project. You might find it helpful to use this checklist when choosing a Registered Remodeler or Builder member of the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville. • Check to be sure that you’re talking to a Registered Remodeler or Builder. • Check to be sure the remodeler or builder has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers. • Ask how long they have been in the remodeling or building business. You want to be sure they’ll be around after the project is complete to service warranties and to address issues that could develop. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. • Check with the Better Business Bureau to learn of any complaints. • Inquire whether the remodeler or builder has sufficient workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction- or remodeling-related accidents on your premises. It’s a good idea to ask for proof of insurance. • Check references. • Check for quality of workmanship and materials of previous projects. • Be sure you are able to easily communicate with the person. • Ask for a complete and clearly written contract. Review it carefully. • Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the remodeler or builder is unable to pay for materials and labor as the project proceeds, there could be potential problems. • Look for these logos: • Visit BIALouisville.com for lists of Registered Remodelers and Builders. homegardenandremodelingshow.com

a home owner might try using only the tools he or she already owns, but that aren’t designed for the specific job at hand. Projects attempted without having the proper tools will typically take much longer to complete and create less-than-ideal results. Also, if a product is installed incorrectly, its warranty could be void and the home owner risks having to buy new materials and start all over. DIY projects can be fun as long as they suit your skill level. In fact, at this year’s Home, Garden & Remodeling Show, we have a DIY workshop area with several projects that are easy to tackle, so be sure to stop by and try your hand at those! Of course, there are many home maintenance projects that are relatively simple and can be completed easily, even by those who have little or no previous experience, as well. For home owners considering projects that are more involved, there is added value and peace of mind in knowing that a project will be done right the first time by hiring a professional Registered Remodeler. FINANCING FOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS Explore your options and what banks are offering. So you’re in your forever home, or at least your for-a-longtime home, and you love it … but it’s due for improvements. Maybe it’s time to tackle the outdated kitchen, or to upgrade the bathroom to a home spa. Whatever your project there’s one thing for sure: it will come at a cost. The good news is if you’re investing in your home, chances are you can tap into your equity to help finance these improvements. There are a handful of options available, so how do you know which finance route is best for you? In short? It depends, says David Hobbs of River City Bank, “on the individual needs and position of borrowers.” To figure out what’s right for you, “first define your needs,” Hobbs says. Meet with the professionals doing the work and set the budget. Then make appointments with bankers. “Most people go to wherever their deposit relationship is,” he says, “but it’s important to comparison shop,” getting at least two estimates. The key factors that affect what you’ll pay “boil down to the credit score and the LTV (loan to value) ratios,” Hobbs says, meaning how much more your home is worth than you owe. 40
2019 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Guide & Magazine
You’ll likely need at least a 90 percent LTV (lower is better). Add to that, “How did you come about the remodelers?” he says. “Are they part of the BIA?” If so, that puts him at ease about lending money for the work. “I know they’ve been vetted and recommended by a trustworthy person.” Three primary options are available. A Home Equity Loan is a loan against the equity in your home. Sometimes called a second mortgage, they are in addition to your original home loan, using your home as collateral. Loans are repaid over a certain time period, at a fixed interest rate. Lenders like you to own a certain percentage of your home before they’ll make a home equity loan (usually 85%). “A Home Equity Line of Credit gives you more control over how and when you borrow money,” explains, PJ. Moore of L&N Federal Credit Union, “with easy access to funds and flexible draw and repayment options.” Also called a “HELOC,” these function like a credit card, with the amount you can borrow based on equity in your home
– and your home is used as collateral. During a draw period, which may be several years, you draw funds (via check or card connected to the account) as needed and make payments only on the amount borrowed. In fact, you may only be required to make interest payments during the draw. Interest rates may be variable on HELOCs, and may start out with special introductory rates that increase after a period of time.
“A Home Equity Line of Credit gives you more control over how and when you borrow money,” - PJ Moore
With enough equity in your home you can also refinance the original mortgage for more than you owe, and use the “cash out” to finance improvements. Be sure to analyze the interest expense, Hobbs says, especially if you purchased your home while rates were very low.
