Watching the BICF Continue to Grow and Serve The Community by Pat Durham

BIA Executive Vice President One of the things I have marveled in watching over the years in the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville is the continual evolution of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF). From the infancy of its early days where it was just a discussion at the Board room table, to its emergence as a legitimate 501C3 charitable organization under the tutelage of Dave French of LG&E, as well as the guidance of our partners at Kosair Charities, it continued to grow as Davis Boland of Boland Maloney Realty started shaping the Foundation’s core and structure. Every imaginable idea for growth was discussed, as we tried to figure out ways to raise enough money to pay for postage to mail out funding requests—much less have enough money in the bank to take on an actual project! Phase II of the BICF’s growth started to ramp up under the leadership of BIA remodeler and Board member, Brandon Bailey, of Bailey Remodeling and Construction, LLC. With some help from our inaugural BICF/Kosair Charities/Youthbuild playhouse builder Rob Eberenz, Jr., more attention to the charity started to build. Today, through the generosity of BIA member companies such as River City Bank and its president, David Hobbs, our charity has has reached and served local institutions such as Kosair Charities, Youthbuild Louisville, Day Spring, Boys and Girls Haven of Louisville, V.I.P.S., Harbour House and many others too numerous to mention with projects that have made a difference in the lives of children and families with special needs. Many Registered Builders and Remodelers have joined the growing ranks of members who made lives better by building custom built playhouses for children with special needs. Our latest and quite distinctive BICF project, featured on the cover of this month’s Louisville Builder Magazine, was a new covered porch and deck the width of the house for the family of recently deceased Louisville Metro Police Officer Nick Rodman, who courageously died in the line of duty serving the citizens of Louisville. This project, which was the dream of Officer Rodman and his wife Ashley, was recommended to us by BIA member and painter Marty Hale of Hale Painting Co., and performed under the leadership of BIA Board member and Registered Builder Pete Thieneman of Clifford Thieneman Builder, LLC. All materials and labor were donated by generous BIA members and their companies, which are detailed in the article inside. Any leftover proceeds from cash donations will go towards a scholarship fund for the Rodman’s two young children. Today, still aspiring under the leadership of Brandon Bailey, our BICF funding has just topped six figures. And we are not finished yet, as funding continues to grow and project requests continue to pour in. The funding never lasts as long as you think it will, as the needs in the community are great. If you would like to be involved in any way with this noble BIA Foundation, please call Martha Bracken or Amy Elliott at 429-6000. Help us look back from the future and marvel yet again at how much further we have come from today. You, our BIA family, have made this happen.

BIA Members Build Outdoor Living Space for Fallen Officer’s Family By Nancy Miller

BIA is recognized for its advocacy on behalf of, and the development and support of, a broad spectrum of industry members. What may not be so widely known outside the building industry is the organization’s commitment to providing resources and skilled professionals to worthwhile projects within the community. Nick Rodman, an officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department, was killed in the line of duty last spring. He left behind a wife and two young children. The Rodmans had been looking forward to building a deck to the back of their Southern Parkway area home. That project may have been stalled if it were not for the BIA. The family’s situation was presented at a BIA board meeting. There was overwhelming consensus among attendees that the Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF) spearhead a deck construction for the Rodmans. During the board meeting, Builder board member Pete Thieneman offered to be the general contractor. At that point, a “let’s make this happen” spirit took over. “PC likes to give back to the community any way 6

Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com

we can, so I said we would take care of the lumber and would reach out to some of our suppliers,” said board member Kevin Passanisi of PC Lumber & Hardware. “Since PC donated the lumber, we donated the roofing and accessories, and I signed up Epic Contracting, another member, to provide the labor for the roofing,” recounted John Thomas, of K-I Lumber & Building Materials and a BIA board member. “We had everything we needed to complete the project within the first four or five days after the appeal went out. The response from BIA members was great,” said Thieneman, of Clifford Thieneman Co. Although several BIA members credit him for bringing the deck to reality, he’s humble about his role. “My small part was to coordinate things. We were blessed to have a bunch of members who love their community and were willing to give their time and resources,” he said. Through the efforts of BIA members, the original deck project expanded to become an outdoor living space complete with aluminum siding, covered porch, a deck that spans the width of the house, patio furniture, rug, ceiling fan and lighting, and landscaping.

Brandon Bailey of Bailey Remodel & Construction, is also the chair of the Building Industry Foundation. He said BICF had planned to donate $5,000 to the project but because all necessary materials and services were donated, BICF didn’t need to put up funds. This allowed monetary contributions to be applied to educational expenses for the Rodman children, Mason and Ellie. “I’m very proud of BIA members for stepping up and doing a really cool service,” he said. Among the companies that donated materials, labor and monetarily to the month-long project were: Clifford Thieneman Company, PC Home Stores, K-I West Roofing & Siding Division, EPIC Contracting, TFC, LLC, Stephenson Garden Center & Nursery, Energy Savers, Bell Aluminum Products, Candlelight Electric, Reflections of You, by Amy, LLC Staging and Design, Anytime Portables, Dependable Dumpsters, Automated Living LLC, Brecher’s Lighting, Central Bank & Trust, Ken Dawson—Triad Properties, LLC, 1st Choice Insulation, Infinity Homes, Bob Marrett, Jack Marsh—Marsh Properties, Lee Brick & Block, Metro First, Interlinc Mortgage Services, LLC—Kevin Hulsey, J. D. Nichols, Kyle Onan, Republic Bank, SRM Concrete, Leo Thieneman, The Door Store of Louisville, The Jones Group, Wilson & Muir Bank and Barry Wooley Designs. “The companies that were involved will get some exposure as contributors, but the main benefit to them and to BIA was that we were all able to help a family in need,” said Thomas. Thieneman agreed, saying, “It was an honor to see the BIA come together as a group to help.”

Progress on the Rodman covered porch and deck unfolded very quickly over the summer with numerous BIA members jumping on board with the project.

The BIA's Innovative Outreach and Programming Tackles Workforce Development Challenges By Nancy Miller As a critical labor shortage in the construction industry reverberates across the Louisville area, the BIA is assuming a lead role in creating workforce development initiatives. Central to a multi-faceted plan are strategic Workforce Development partnerships with area school districts and the Louisville chapter of YouthBuild. “We lost a lot of our workforce during the recession, so we absolutely need to train young people to come into the industry,” said Perry Lyons of P. L. Lyons Architectural Builders. He is one of several BIA members who are spearheading programs that already have had measurable impact preparing young people to enter the trades. Growth plans for the programs portend an increased population of skilled workers. The BIA's Workforce Development Committee is comprised of members interested in hiring or mentoring young people who have indicated interest in the trades. Committee members also host teachers and students on job sites or to serve as guest speakers in classrooms. The BIA's Workforce Development Initiatives have expanded to include innovative alliances in our area. One is with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), which serves more than 100,000 students. Previously, out of 21 high schools in the system, Iroquois High School was the only one that offered construction trades programs. Now, under the direction of Career and College Readiness Director Christy Rogers, the Academies of Louisville have designed eleven high school programs that offer career pathways in construction. “BIA has supported our construction programs in several ways. At Valley High School, they connected us with Prudential Heating & Air which found 10 Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com

us a terrific HVAC teacher we have hired. At Western High School, the BIA is supporting the carpentry instructor, and they are working with us in placing students in BIA member companies,” said Terry Miller, JCPS Career Theme Specialist. “BIA gives us a booth every year at the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show where Iroquois students built a lawn and garden shed and visited many exhibiting companies to discuss what skills are needed in their categories,” he continued. Lyons serves as a BIA advisor to the Shelby County High School NAHB student chapter, and works with Walt Wilson, a carpentry instructor, who’s head of the chapter. They, along with Lyons’ partner Adam Gallagher and Pete Nusz, follow a NAHB curriculum and guide students in their participation in the NAHB International Builders’ Show. Students apply skills they have learned to the design of an actual construction project. “It is extremely advanced for high school students. We require a lot from them. I love my involvement with the program and the kids who are in it. We hope they continue their education and allow us to mentor them in the building industry,” said Lyons. Wilson stresses the amount of time students devote to the project, all of which is outside regular classroom hours. Last year, the Shelby Country students placed second in the national competition. “Our kids were up against a team that draws students from 14 districts. It was David and Goliath all the way,” said Wilson. He has not yet compiled statistics from the 2016 competition but said,

“Before last year, we had 20 students who competed. Fifteen of them are in jobs or are in school that directly relates to the building industry. A couple are studying construction management in college. I think it shows BIA members that they’re getting something for their investment,” he continued. Currently, there are no construction programs offered to Oldham Country high school students. Spearheaded by the BIA, the Oldham Country School District will introduce a Residential Construction Program in the 2018-2019 school year. BIA Executive Vice President Pat Durham, and members Penny Love and Jeremy Esposito, have been assisting with the curriculum. They will supplement five-day a week class instruction for high school students with visits by experts in specific construction disciplines, and they hope to take students on field trips to job sites and other points of construction activity. “I have always thought we don’t have enough vocational schools. I’m excited to be part of a program that entices students to focus on building and to gain some real experience. We plan to cover chronologically every aspect of building, from the initial plans to handing over the keys. As a former teacher, I’m really looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm and interest in our profession,” said Love. Chuck Kavanaugh, former BIA Executive Vice President, was on the planning committee to establish YouthBuild Louisville 18 years ago. YouthBuild is an educational, job training and leadership program for low-income young adults ages 18-21. Since that time, the BIA and YouthBuild have had a close, productive relationship, according to Lynn Rippy, Executive Director of YouthBuild Louisville. “BIA has funded us every year since our inception. BIA helps us market our kids to the industry and has invited our young people to events such as Homearama, the Tour of Remodeled Homes and the Home, Garden and Remodeling Show. And, builders spend time with the kids to teach them skills,

such as when they work together on the playhouses for Kosair Charities,” said Rippy. “At this point, the goal of the program is to give the kids a chance to show their skills and to be exposed to BIA members such as electricians, plumbers or HVAC contractors who have apprenticeship programs,” said Brandon Bailey, Chairman of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation, which oversees the playhouse project. Rippy estimates that approximately 20 YouthBuild Louisville participants have found employment within BIA businesses. She’s grateful for BIA’s support of several young people who have started their own construction-related small enterprises. A couple BIA members are now working with the young entrepreneurs to develop larger jobs. “We’re trying to figure out how we can get younger people into the building trades through the Mayor’s Summer Works program. This year we put together a demonstration project, and hope to see it evolve,” added Rippy. The challenges posed to BIA’s Workforce Development program are many, but the necessity to expand the availability of skilled workers has energized the association and individual members to find creative solutions to a crisis that must be addressed if the industry is to grow and thrive.

Join Us to Develop the Next Generation of Talent! Do you want to be part of the solution to our construction workforce shortage? Are you ready to roll up your sleeves to recruit young people into the construction trades? Do you want to learn about our partnerships with programs that are training our next generation of workers? Do you want to become a mentor to young people entering construction?

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Friendly Competition Drives Fall Membership Drive

As football season and the BIA Fall Membership Drive are in full swing, they have a few things in common. Team members are goal driven and a coach is a motivator who demands a lot from his team. “Coach” John Thomas wants to break records just as much as did illustrious coaches Vince Lombardi and Paul “Bear” Bryant. As Membership Chairman of the Fall Membership Drive, Thomas’ goals are new members, not field goals, but he is no less driven to win. Last spring, he put the BIA Board of Directors on notice that they were in the membership game in a big way. “At a board meeting, I asked everyone to stand. When they did, I told them anyone who couldn’t commit to recruiting one new member should sit down. No one sat down. Then I said I’d like them to each recruit two members. Almost all of them delivered. From that group, we gained about 100+ new members,” said Thomas. Central to his strategy was a Board of Directors Football League. At every board meeting, football-themed presentations award recruiters and “gently shame” those still on the bench. A BIA Heisman will be awarded at the end of the year to the MVP with the most recruits.

Importance of Recruitment

As the second largest HBA in the country, BIA aggressively recruits new members in an effort to enhance its advocacy efforts and to fulfill other

elements of its mission. “Our goal with recruitment is to be able to connect more people to our members and help everyone grow their businesses,” explained BIA Director of Member Services Amy Elliott. “We truly emphasize the importance of doing business with members and, equally important, we emphasize the value of members being engaged. We want you to make the most of this opportunity to network and learn from other members so your businesses can be profitable, vibrant and connected to the community.” The Fall Membership Drive, sponsored by P.C. Lumber & Hardware, began August 1 and ends October 31. Four teams are engaged in friendly (but seriously determined!) competition. The winner will receive bragging rights, which we’re sure they will take great pride in flaunting. In addition, each winning team participant will receive a $100 Visa gift card and chances to win big prizes at the General Membership meeting in November.

PulteGroup Builds Home for Wounded Combat Hero PulteGroup, in partnership with Military Warriors Support Foundation is privileged to honor one of our nation’s combat wounded heroes who served in the United States Marine Corps; Retired Corporal James Faddis. Faddis served in two combat deployments to Afghanistan, in 2009 & 2011. He was wounded during combat in March of 2011 where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He obtained many honors during his military service including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Combat Action Ribbon and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. “It truly is our honor to be a part of building a home for Corporal Faddis where he can enjoy many years creating long-lasting memories in his new home,” says Scott Mairn, the Company’s division president for Louisville. “James has served our country with pride and we hope this home will provide him and his family with the security and peace of mind as he continues with his education and transition into civilian life.” “As private citizens and a public organization, PulteGroup and our employees are eternally grateful for our nation’s service men and women who have given so much to protect and defend our freedoms. Through our Built to Honor program, PulteGroup’s goal is simple: to help ease the struggles of our wounded veterans and their families as they rebuild their lives here at home. The best way we can make an impact is by doing what we do best: building homes,” added Mairn.

2018 BICF Playhouse Recipients Meet Their Builders! On August 29th and 31st, the BIA hosted our two 2018 playhouse recipients— Ellie Kate Cook and Lucas Tucker—to officially meet their builders, Scott Welch—Welch Builders, Inc. and Tom McKechnie—Stonehenge Construction LLC & Sons. In afternoons filled with balloons, cookies and lemonade, both Ellie Kate and Lucas received miniature tool belts and tools, as well as the undivided attention of a room full of adults…all focused on making their dreams come true! Ellie Kate was deaf when she was adopted from China at age 20 months. Since then, she received cochlear implants at age 2, and is in the process of catching up to her classmates in language and motor skills! She is fun-loving and full of spunk, and she loves all things pink, playing dress up, coloring and

drawing (and anything arts/crafts related!), Disney princesses, horses and dancing! We cannot wait to see what Scott Welch and designer Lisa Steinbock (Steinbock Interiors, LLC) come up with for this precious little gal! Lucas was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome at birth, and has low muscle tone and cognitive and speech delays. However, he is the life of the party— and even sang Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” for all of those in attendance at his event! He is a social butterfly who loves meeting new people; he also loves sports, riding bikes and especially… shoes! He has many friends in his neighborhood, and can’t wait to have them all over for singing and dancing parties in his new playhouse. We’re sure Tom McKechnie and Lisa Lynn Designs will give him a great little house designed for both development and fun!

Lucas Tucker enjoys playing with new tool set, given to him by Tommy McKechnie, Stonehenge Construction & Sons, LLC.

Ellie Kate Cook is all smiles as she plans the playhouse of her dreams!

Louisville Metro’s Cool Roof Program Puts Money Back in Your Pocket The Louisville Metro Office of Sustainability is still offering its Cool Roof Rebate program…and if you haven’t applied…you should! This program provides rebates to property owners of $1/square foot of cool roof installed, with a goal of incentivizing at least 100,000 square feet of cool roofs! Pinnacle Properties has been constructing office and condo buildings since 1992, and has been building Energy Star-rated commercial buildings since 2007 with the advent of 12 buildings at Eastpoint Business Park. John Miranda, Pinnacle Properties Partner, recently applied for the cool roof rebate for his 25-building office park, Blankenbaker Centre (a 175,000 sq.ft. mixed use retail and office development). He shared that the “process for applying is not only easy and fast, it’s lucrative.” Miranda went on to say that he received 15% of the cost of the roofing materials in rebates. “BIA members need to be aware of this program and take advantage of the incentive that’s being offered,” he said. “It’s a great program for anyone who’s already building to LEED or Energy Star standards.” Buildings located in Metro Council Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15 are identified as high heat island areas based on the Urban Heat Management

Study (2016), and will receive at least 60% of the available funding. Applications are being accepted until funds are depleted. Pat Durham, BIA Executive Vice President, commented, “Our members who are trying to satisfy high energy efficiecy or to achieve Energy Star or LEED ceertifications have embraced this program. We are grateful to the Mayor and the Office of Sustainability for making this program available to our residential and commercial builders and remodelers.” For more information and to apply for this valuable and worthwhile incentive program, please visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/ sustainability. Our BIA members are building Louisville every day. Contact the Office of Sustainability TODAY to see if your roof qualifies! ***For residential buildings, they are offering $1 per square foot for new or retrofit steepslope and flat or low-sloped cool roofs up to the maximum rebate of $2,000 for residential buildings, including multi-family. For non-residential buildings, they are offering $1 per square foot of new or retrofit flat or low-sloped cool roofs up to the maximum rebate of $5,000 and for steep-sloped cool roofs up to the maximum rebate of $10,000.***

What is a SPIKE?

A SPIKE is a Recruiter of New Members. What are the benefits of becoming a Spike? The real benefits are intangible: You are recognized for your contributions to the association and regarded as an accomplished and connected member. Additionally, Spikes receive: • A coveted invitation to the biggest party of the year, the Spike Party at the International Builders’ Show® • Increased visibility, recognition and networking opportunities at industry events • Unique and valuable lapel pins for each level of achievement • Additional VIP treatment throughout the year

How do I become a Spike?

How do I earn Spike credits?

Before becoming a Spike, you are a Spike candidate. That means you have earned between one and five and a half credits. Once you earn your sixth credit, you become an official NAHB Spike! Spike credits are earned by recruiting and retaining NAHB and BIA members. In order to become a Life Spike, you must have earned a minimum of 25 Spike credits.

Spikes earn one credit for each new Builder or Associate member they sponsor. When that member renews after his or her first year of membership, the sponsoring member automatically gets one renewal credit. Every year the member renews thereafter, the sponsoring member will receive a 1/2 renewal credit. Spikes receive a 1/2 credit for recruitment and a 1/2 credit for the renewal of Affiliate members.
