Ambassador of Christmas Cheer
Happy Holidays to my favorite members of the Building Industry Association! It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again when I’m checking my lists—and checking them twice!—to find out just who’s been naughty and nice out there. Fortunately for this old guy, your BIA elves have kept me in the loop on all the GREAT things your Association has been up to this year, and I’ve got good news! Almost all of you are going to receive blessings from the Mrs. (Claus, that is) and me this holiday season because you’ve had another banner year! (Well, except for that Tommy Raver. But as you might expect, that’s another story…) In fact, after reading this edition of the Louisville Builder, I can honestly say it looks like I’m going to be even busier than I thought on this year’s journey around the globe. But, the Mrs. says I need to get more organized, so I think I’ll spend this time looking ahead to what’s in store for my favorite Association in 2018! Under the new leadership of Mark Simpson and his Executive team, alongside Pat Durham, I see great things ahead! This group will steer you well throughout the year, and hone your focus on those issues that are most impacting the building industry. Workforce development will continue to need your time and talent to encourage and train those young men and women in the construction trades. Make sure you continue mentoring students, or you just might find yourself on the naughty list next year! Legislative issues such as the pension crisis, tax reform and strengthening workforce development initiatives will need your focus early next year—please make sure you stay in touch with Annie Dutton on how you can help, especially when we need your collective voices! Another great way to stay on the nice list is to get involved in your Building Industry Charitable Foundation. In 2017, these folks found themselves building playhouses for Kosair kids, a new deck and covered porch for the family of a fallen LMPD officer, renovating a kitchen for those nice folks over at Harbor House, and most recently helping one of my very favorites, a sweet 10-year old wheelchair-bound young lady. You just get in touch with Martha Bracken to find out how you can help, now, you hear? As I always say to my helpers, the best elves are busy elves! And just like my little friends, I know you all are always working hard to bring in new members. You represent the entire building industry, and your collective voice just gets louder as you grow! Come together and set some records in 2018! Beyond that, I need to take just a moment to commend your BIA elves. Er, staff. They work so hard, I’d hire them for the North Pole if Pat would let me! If you need anything at all out there, please don’t hesitate to reach out to those folks. They want to help and love doing it. I know that much for sure…and they are sure to stay at the top of my nice list! As 2018 draws near, please know that Mrs. Claus and I will be up here watching and admiring the great work you’re doing. In the spirit of this beautiful season, remember to share your time and love with your families and friends. Meanwhile, I’ll just be up here getting my elves and reindeer prepared for a magical evening that’s just right around the corner. If you watch the sky and listen carefully, you just might see my sleigh way up there, along with a very faint, but memorable, “HO, HO, HO”!
Stay safe and warm, BIA. I’ll be seeing you soon!

Looking Back at 2017 Gives a Sneak Peek at What’s to Come By Nancy Miller As 2017 comes to a close, the word of the year has been “change,” as illustrated by the observations of Executive Vice President Pat Durham and Executive Committee members as they reviewed the year and presented the BIA highlights and accomplishments.
Pat Durham’s assuming the leadership position. Tom Raver, Associate Vice President, concurs that it was a milestone for the BIA: “The overall transition from Chuck Kavanaugh to Pat Durham has been very well received. I’d say we haven’t missed a beat.”
“The BIA has taken on a lot of change this year. Honestly, every single bit has been positive,” says Jeremy Esposito, President. “The most overarching issue that has affected the BIA from a community standpoint is the Comprehensive Plan for Louisville Metro, which has demanded extensive time and focus.” Vice President Mark Simpson credits the participation of many BIA members who attended meetings associated with the Comprehensive Plan as critically important to increasing the Association’s visibility and influence among Metro Government’s leaders and decision makers.
Simpson cites Durham’s leadership as instrumental in enhancing the BIA’s position in numerous aspects of the community, adding that such a role is a double-edge sword that puts more work on an already overworked staff.
When Esposito discusses other changes that have occurred, he emphasizes 6

“Pat and his staff are looking to the future, adjusting to the economy, helping the industry and providing more information to train members and make them more efficient. What a great job they’ve done,” says Scott Welch, Treasurer. Durham offers his own perspective on the transition. “Within the BIA, our members and staff are getting used to a new administration. Chuck had done
a lot of great things, and it was hard for people to let go. We’re getting into a routine about expectations and the jobs that have been filled. The veterans – Gail, Robin, Margie, Jan and Stephanie – have continued to do exceptional work despite the turnover and all the newness,” he says. He believes selecting a new venue for the holiday party, hosting Tabletop Night at Bowman Field and holding the annual meeting at an events location in the Bluegrass Industrial Park area are positive steps that indicate a willingness and enthusiasm for freshening the approach to member events. Esposito stresses membership growth, as well as members’ increased business, staff training and the BIA website as noteworthy accomplishments during the past year. Particularly progressive, in his opinion, are new approaches to membership recruitment and retention. Simpson, emphasizing that an organization is only as strong as its members, lauds the efforts of John Thomas, Kevin Passanisi and Amy Elliott for increasing growth and retention.
Secretary Don Wirtzberger ascribes the Association’s involvement in the political arena as one of the most impactful accomplishments of the year. Durham supports that belief when he asserts, “Governor Bevin’s willingness to engage with our industry, particularly with right to work legislation, the prevailing wage law, public-private contractual agreements, and his red tape reduction initiative, has been very important,” says Durham. The BIA had made the red tape reduction initiative a priority with the Governor. As a result of our members’ advocacy efforts, buildings are no longer required to use cast iron pipes in their waste and vent lines; they may now use PVC pipes, making Kentucky more competitive with our surrounding states. The Association also proposed that the air gap for dishwashers be eliminated, and that was accomplished. “The work of the Government Affairs Committee on legislative issues that help our members has been critical,” echoes Scott Welch. Like Durham, he and Mark Simpson underscore the value of the red tape reduction initiatives. Simpson specifically refers to the Omni Hotel’s taking advantage of the cast iron pipe regulatory change as a prime example of a major development that has resulted from the BIA’s focus on legislative issues.
“I’m impressed with the number of members we have and are getting. When my dad was a member, he had a lot of opportunities to walk up to a builder in a BIA meeting and get business. Today’s meetings are more about support, education, introductions. The BIA still gives members opportunities to sell, but opportunities to sell can now be found in so many different ways, such as the internet. Shame on me if I don’t know where someone’s building,” says Raver, who commends the Emerging Professionals group for strengthening membership retention and preparing future industry leaders.
“Also on the legislative front, Representative Jerry Miller, from Louisville, helped us pass a bill that calls for those who take a zoning case to the Court of Appeals to post a bond set by a judge to cover the lost cost to the winning party should they lose the appeal,” says Durham.
Within the membership, there has been the creation of a leadership ladder for Associate members, which Durham sees as a very positive move, explaining that it enables a vice president-in-waiting to have a voice—although not a vote—to be brought up to speed and to benefit from continuity.
“The BIA continues to evolve as an organization and has become even more active as an advocacy group as the government has become more involved in the building industry. The BIA’s message of advocacy is working, remarks Raver.
“Another change is that we have added an Associate to the Executive Committee. That’s a huge step that has been pushed for a decade,” says Esposito. In his view, the Association offering a 401K for its members is another step forward.
Wirtzberger wholeheartedly supports the BIA’s broadening the spectrum of its engagement in the commercial sector. “That’s positive because it increases membership, allows us to offer more services and gives us a stronger force

from our PAC,” he says. “Commercial development is a vital part of economic development. It has been a positive move for the BIA to become more involved in the commercial industry,” agrees Raver. As Welch reviews the year, the association’s workforce development programs, in conjunction with Shelby, Jefferson, Bullitt and Oldham County Schools, is a stand-out achievement. BIA members are active participants with the schools in introducing students to and training them in the skilled trades. He regards Homearama and the Home, Garden and Remodeling Show as other major successes, as were BICF projects like the playhouses and the project to build a covered porch for the family of a fallen police officer. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been in an association that gives back like the BIA does,” says Welch.
Esposito considers modifications to Tabletop Night and the golf outing,
and replacing the softball game with a bowl-a-thon as indications of members’ and staff’s support of revitalization of events. He was especially impressed with Grilling For A Cause, hosted by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery, calling it a “fantastic” competition that raised funds for the BICF. Looking toward the coming year, Raver hopes the BIA will be successful in convincing more business owners and decision makers to become members and to assume an active role. Based on conversations he has had with members, Wirtzberger is optimistic about the industry and about the BIA in 2018. “I think we’re well-positioned for success in the future. The biggest challenge is to keep up with all the work that lies ahead. The passing of the torch, when I become President, formally happens at the holiday party. I’m as ready as I can be,” says Mark Simpson.

BICF’s Year of Giving Responds to Diverse Needs By Nancy Miller The mission of the Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF) is to use the talents, resource and abilities of members of the BIA to improve the quality of life of special needs children and adults in our community. However, in 2017 the BICF found itself helping not only individuals with special needs, but also low income families, the family of a police officer killed in action and a mother who is in desperate financial need as she cares for her terminally ill son. “Hopefully, through projects and word of mouth, we’re putting out the message that we are here to help and to give back to the community,” says BICF Executive Committee member Brian Gohmann with River City Bank. BICF is chaired by Brandon Bailey (Bailey Remodeling and Construction), who Mark Simpson (Simpson Builders)—another BICF Executive Committee member—credits with doing a yeoman’s job coordinating activities and growing the BICF’s nest egg. Bailey, in turn, deflects praise from himself and underscores the participation and contributions of BIA members, including those who participated in the 2017 Call Day. This event, which raised $30,000, was the single largest fundraiser of the Foundation thus far. “I was surprised that so many people turned out to make calls. The responses we had and the willingness to donate from people we called were overwhelming,” says Gohmann. The BICF project that stood out to Chad Turner (Carpet Specialists) was 10 Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com
that which Pete Thieneman headed to construct a deck and covered porch for the family of Nick Rodman, a fallen LMPD police officer. “This is my first year getting involved with BICF. Brandon Bailey invited me to be part of the committee. I have always respected what the BICF does and was happy to join,” says Turner. Enough money was donated for this project that the BICF was also able to provide funds for the Rodman children’s education. Among the projects the BICF contributed to in 2017 were partnering with St. Matthews Plumbing to purchase and install two new commercial hot water heaters for residences at the Boys and Girls Haven, providing an HVAC system for Lisa Lynn Designs’ holiday service project to benefit a family in need, and partnering with Sierra Design and Construction to assist a blind couple with renovating their home to include a laundry room on the first floor. Working with Dave Parks of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, the BICF also stepped in to assist a mother who was facing eviction. The BICF donated one month’s rent and renegotiated the terms of the lease, enabling her to stay in the home while she cares for her son who is suffering from terminal brain cancer. Of course, one of the BICF’s most well-known efforts are the playhouses that are built annually for Kosair Charities’ children with special needs. These playhouses are built in partnership with YouthBuild, a local training center for the construction trades. “The playhouses give them a place of their own, and
I think that’s really a neat thing. Watching their reactions when they see the completed playhouses is amazing,” Said Gohmann. Other noteworthy projects in 2017 included: Providing a complete kitchen remodel for Harbor House, an alternative to institutional care for individuals with mental or developmental disabilities. “The kitchen is a place where they will learn independence by preparing meals for themselves and others. The BICF, working with Sierra Design and Construction and CapABLE Living, has been involved with some redesign and planning, and the project will start later this year. It will be a successful project that meets our mission statement,” says Turner. Working with Project Warm, a non-profit that provides home weatherization services for low-income individuals or families in the West End of Louisville. Esposito Construction, Bailey Remodeling & Construction, CapABLE Living and the BIA staff all provided full teams for the 2017 Blitz. Bailey looks forward to the project becoming an annual BICF Day of Service. Planning the fundraising event, Grilling for a Cause, which we hope will become an annual fundraiser for the BICF. This unique and fun event pitted BIA Executive Committee members and their teams against one another in a grilling competition graciously sponsored by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Watching the spirited competition (that was judged by three Past Presidents) were just over 100 BIA members, and Perry Lyons and Don Karem’s team were the victorious grillers. “I believe Don is urging Perry to go after his culinary dreams,” chuckles Chad Turner. On Mark Simpson’s team were David Stemler and Larry Hibbard. “We came in last place. I’m conducting an internal investigation,” says Simpson. Working with Simpson Builders to build and install a wheelchair ramp and renovating a bathroom for a 10-year old young lady whose leg has been amputated at the hip due to cancer in her femur. This project will enable her to access her home and the bathroom without aid, and grant her the independence she needs to continue to heal physically and psychologically Looking forward, the BICF Executive Committee is hard at work setting fundraising goals for 2018. Turner reports that plans are to have a marquis fundraising event in the spring and fall and some small fundraisers throughout the year, culminating in the largest set goal in the history of the BICF. “This year, we have impacted more lives than ever before. And we’re the healthiest financially than we have ever been. We’re increasing our fundraising efforts to raise about $70,000, which is approximately ten percent more than last year. We’re prepared to bless a lot of people in 2018,” says Bailey.
If these projects move you, and/or you would like to be involved in the 2018 efforts of our Foundation, whose mission is to use the talents, resources, and abilities of members of the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville to improve the quality of life of special needs children and adults in our community, please contact Martha Bracken at Martha@BIALouisville.com.
The BICF has recently undertaken the building of a wheelchair ramp and the renovation of a bathroom to aid a young lady who is wheelchair bound. Miley Hodge is a very special 10-year old young lady fighting osteosarcoma, and we look forward to helping her become more independent.

BICF's Grilling for a Cause On October 19, 2017, BIA members turned out in full force to support the Building Industry Charitable Foundation [BICF] at our first annual Grilling For a Cause hosted by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. At this outstanding event, Executive Committee members (and their teams) faced off against each other in an ultimate grilling showdown. Judged by our expert Past Presidents, Perry Lyons and Don Karem’s team were declared the winners and took home the 2017 Golden Spatula Award.
In last place was Mark Simpson’s team, and he has since been overheard declaring an internal investigation into the matter! With unlimited food, drink, a DJ and a photo booth all provided by Ferguson, nearly 120 members enjoyed an evening filled with networking and laughs—and simultaneously raised funds for a GREAT cause. We are thankful to our grill teams, our members and especially our gracious sponsor for a FANTASTIC event.

Helping Louisville Families in Need On November 4, 2017, BIA members and staff turned out in full force to help with Project Warm’s 2017 Blitz Day. Armed with plastic, gaskets and caulking, our teams went out to winterize homes for low income and special needs families in Louisville. Since 1982, Project Warm has provided free weatherization services for people who meet the eligibility criteria. This 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is funded in part by LG&E, UPS, Metro Louisville, the Honorable Order of
Kentucky Colonels and the Gheens Foundation, and the BIA felt privileged to be able to participate in their remarkable efforts. We’d like to especially recognize and thank our BIA member teams— Esposito Construction, Bailey Remodeling and Construction and CapABLE Living—for giving back so freely of your time and energy. Because of your generosity, many Louisville families will save on their utility bills, and more importantly, stay warm and safe throughout the upcoming winter season.
BIA members and staff participate on a chilly, yet heart warming, day of service.

Karen McKechnie with her sons, Tommy, Eric and Michael, after receiving their awards.
Stonehenge Construction, LLC Celebrates Big50 and Big50 Top 5 Awards By Martha Bracken, BIA Staff Each year since 1986, REMODELING magazine inducts 50 remodeling companies into the Big50. This achievement recognizes companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship and impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards. REMODELING editors, columnists, industry leaders and companies themselves make the nominations every year. Following a lengthy evaluation and interview process, the editors select the 50 companies who have exemplified the best of the industry that year, and who have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices. “The Big50 is selected from an initial pool of 93,000 qualified remodelers nationwide,” stated Karen McKechnie, President of Stonehenge Construction. “From there, they whittle it down to 10,000 and then begin making phone calls. My son Tommy [McKechnie] responded to their request, and we were off and running!” Karen went on to say that REMODELING magazine asked for email addresses of 50 of their past clients, and believing that honesty is always the best policy, they elected to send all of their clients from the past two years—whether or not they knew they’d be given a good review. “We weren’t trying to hide anything,” said McKechnie. “We wanted 16 Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com
to ensure the selection committee received honest feedback from our client base.” Shortly thereafter, Stonehenge was notified that they made the top 100 list. While surprised, they were extraordinarily proud of this achievement, and McKechnie congratulated Tommy for his hard work and responsiveness to REMODELING magazine. “This was a reckoning in and of itself,” she said. From this point, they progressed to the interview stage—at which time they again elected to be honest and forthright no matter what was asked. “They asked about our social media presence, and while we know we need to expand on this outreach, we told them that other than Houzz, we don’t network in that way,” said Karen. “Most of our business comes from referrals and word of mouth. They definitely seemed surprised at our success and growth without utilizing these tools,” she laughed. With the process behind them, the Stonehenge Construction team traveled to the Remodelers Summit and Awards Gala in Minnesota, not knowing if their hard work had paid off. They were rewarded by finding out that they made the Big50—which, despite the long process—was still a shock to McKechnie. “I couldn’t believe it when they said our name,” she said. “To give a sense of how unique this status is, consider there are roughly 93,000 remodeling firms in America with paid staff,” noted Craig Webb,
REMODELING Editor-In-Chief. “Since 1986, we have selected only about 1,550 firms. That’s 1.7% of all of the remodeling businesses in the country.” Following this recognition, the team returned to their table to hear about the next award—the Top 5. “The Top 5 is actually the highest rated firms of the Big50,” Karen said. “I was ecstatic with our award, and never dreamed there was more coming.” As they listened to the speaker announce the firms in alphabetical order, they found themselves looking around the table at each other thinking, “what if”? And, as if it was meant to be, the speaker announced Stonehenge Construction. “This was truly beyond anything I could have expected,” said Karen. “This one got to me. It was a truly moving experience, not just for me, but for my boys.” Stonehenge Construction is run by Karen and her three sons: Tommy, Eric and Michael, and she couldn’t be more proud of her family and their business. Her career spanned the architectural, interior design and commercial design fields before she started her own business 32 years ago, and those skills allow her construction team to work together on new and creative options for their clients. The Big50 award is a true testament to not just a satisfied client base, but the integrity and ethics of Stonehenge Construction. “We are proud of Karen and Stonehenge Construction for this distinguished achievement,” stated Pat Durham, Executive Vice President of the BIA. “It truly speaks to her professionalism, talent and impact on our industry.” Our sincere congratulations go out to the entire Stonehenge Construction team on their membership into the REMODELING Big50—it is a huge and well-deserved honor—and we are celebrating along with you!

What is a SPIKE?
A SPIKE is a Recruiter of New Members. What are the benefits of becoming a Spike? The real benefits are intangible: You are recognized for your contributions to the association and regarded as an accomplished and connected member. Additionally, Spikes receive: • A coveted invitation to the biggest party of the year, the Spike Party at the International Builders’ Show® • Increased visibility, recognition and networking opportunities at industry events • Unique and valuable lapel pins for each level of achievement • Additional VIP treatment throughout the year
How do I become a Spike?
How do I earn Spike credits?
Before becoming a Spike, you are a Spike candidate. That means you have earned between one and five and a half credits. Once you earn your sixth credit, you become an official NAHB Spike! Spike credits are earned by recruiting and retaining NAHB and BIA members. In order to become a Life Spike, you must have earned a minimum of 25 Spike credits.
Spikes earn one credit for each new Builder or Associate member they sponsor. When that member renews after his or her first year of membership, the sponsoring member automatically gets one renewal credit. Every year the member renews thereafter, the sponsoring member will receive a 1/2 renewal credit. Spikes receive a 1/2 credit for recruitment and a 1/2 credit for the renewal of Affiliate members.
