The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show presented by Champion Windows and sponsored by LG&E celebrated its 69th year March 3-5, 2017 as the largest, longest running, locally produced home show in the region. That weekend, the Kentucky Exposition Center was buzzing with consumers who engaged with more than 300 vendors to learn about the latest home products and services offered by local companies. This year’s event drew an increased number of attendees, according to BIA Executive Vice President Pat Durham. “Traffic was up this year and vendors were happy. We were able to maximize our news coverage, and we had a very engaging social media campaign. Our partnership with PriceWeber Marketing and Communications gave us an additional advantage for targeted marketing and creating an increased awareness of the event,” he explained.
“We consider this event the Super Bowl of home shows.” – Jason Townsend, Champion Windows
Students from Iroquois High School’s Carpentry Program visited their booth where the garden shed built by the students was on display.
Durham also credited a recovering economy and the creative attributes of the Show for drawing crowds this year. “We brought back the Cooking Stage, and everyone really enjoyed the Disc-Connected K-9’s as they have in recent years. The Living in Louisville exhibit was very popular, and it allowed us to partner with local tourism businesses,” he said. Jason Townsend, Champion Windows, was on site for the entire Show. The company exhibited two sunrooms to highlight how an idea can become a reality. “We wanted to demonstrate how these spaces can be achieved so that they are natural april 2017 7

extensions of your home. This is a good time to reach customers who are thinking about spring cleaning and sprucing up their homes, and maybe putting those tax return dollars to good use,” he said. “It’s not every day that someone shops for windows, so the Home Show is our chance to educate them. It was certainly a good investment and worth our time. We consider this event the Super Bowl of home shows,” Townsend added. The Cooking Stage, presented by Semonin Realtors, made its return with appliances provided by Trend Appliance Company, AV equipment by Hawkeye Security & Electronics and cabinets by Barber Cabinet Co. More than a dozen cooking seminars featured local chefs and culinary experts who demonstrated tips and tricks and served tastings of signature dishes. “We felt like a quality clientele came through the door this year and spent a lot of time shopping,” said Gail Schell, VP of Events and Operations. “We know that with a threeday event it is tough to build momentum, but we certainly feel as though this was a positive year we can build on and continue to increase attendance. Our main goal is to connect companies to consumers, and dollar for dollar, the Home Show is one of the most inexpensive marketing investments some companies can make when looking at their return on investment,” she added. The Belgard Outdoor Living Pavilion, created by local landscape architects, featured an impressive display of outdoor living ideas, and additional areas gave guests plenty of ideas for their outdoor spaces. The Garden Stage showcased dynamic presenters who offered consumers solutions for common gardening challenges and ideas for landscaping on a budget. 2017 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show ucated guests about the benefits of pollinators and which bugs are good for garden areas. “The seminars at the Cooking and Garden Stages were well-attended. Our goals at this event are always to educate and entertain consumers as we connect them with vendors who benefit from the exposure and some who are able to sell their products on site,” Durham noted.

- Pat Durham Deep Roots of the Home Show Nurtured with 4,000 Trees Given Away The Home Show has historically been a popular event on many consumers’ calendars for decades, but it also focuses on the future, as evidenced by the massive tree sapling giveaway. Last year at the Home Show, almost 2,000 tree saplings were given away. This year, that number more than doubled. By Sunday morning, attendees had walked away with 4,000 trees! The effort, presented by L&N Federal Credit Union and staffed by Louisville’s Division of Community Forestry, the Air Pollution Control District, Louisville Grows, Trees Louisville, and the Jefferson County Master Gardeners, was a great example of how the local building community values the region’s tree canopy and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the area.

2017 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Home Show Participants Share Their Perspectives ... P.J. Moore, L&N Federal Credit Union – “I was there all three days and we were busy most of the time. The tree giveaway was a big success. As far as customers go, we had five loans in the works the Monday following the Home Show as a result of our efforts. And, that’s just the start. We’ll definitely be back again next year.” J.P. Delaney, Logan Lavelle Hunt – “Overall, there was a great sense of enthusiasm at the Home Show. Our goal was to increase awareness for our company and to support the BIA, and we achieved that. We talked to a lot of people who were gearing up for remodeling projects. The Disc Connected K-9’s is always a popular draw, and the turnout was good this year.” Jim Lehrer, Brownsboro Hardware – “Gail and the crew at the BIA always do a great job. There was a lot of energy at this year’s Show and we had some good sales. We fired up one of our Weber Genesis grills and cooked chicken on the Show floor and that drew people in. We feel confident this event helps plant a lot of seeds and that even if the customers don’t buy from us that day, they’ll be there on down the line.” Margo Henry, South End Glass & Mirror – “We’ve done the Show for several years and it has always been wonderful. This year, we moved to a larger space and were very pleased. We were able to engage with more people. This event is very well run and is worth our time and investment.”
From cabinets to flooring, anything you need for your home was available at the Show.

First Quarter Demonstrates Impressive Momentum for Statewide Advocacy Association Pressing Forward on Issues That Affect Members By Stacy Smith Rogers
The BIA has been steadfast in its efforts to represent members on key issues that impact the way they do business. In February, members and staff attended the HBAK Board Meeting in Covington, Kentucky where workforce development and regulations were hot topics. Five days later, members representing various segments of our industry traveled to Frankfort for our annual Housing and Building Industry Day at the state capitol. Attendees at both events described a real momentum and progress on critical issues that affect the BIA’s members. HBAK Meeting Reviewed 2017 State Legislative and Regulatory Issues Included on the agenda for discussion in Covington was the regulation requiring arc fault interrupters. Perry Lyons, P.L. Lyons Architectural Builders, serves as the HBAK Codes & Safety Committee chair. “There have been a tremendous amount of problems with that product, and our neighboring states have taken that requirement out of their electrical codes altogether. 12 louisville builder • bialouisville.com
We’ve submitted it to the governor’s Red Tape Reduction Initiative, along with about 30 letters from builders and homeowners in support of dropping the requirement,” he explained. Lyons also mentioned that his committee reported on proposed changes to the Kentucky Building Code that a task force is addressing with the Kentucky Board of Housing as well as air quality in houses and the unintended consequences that have resulted from moisture issues. One of the key takeaways from the state meeting, according to BIA Executive Vice President Pat Durham, was Kentucky Labor Secretary Derrick Ramsey’s support of addressing liability and internships for students under the age of 18. “He recognizes the challenges of workforce development and attracting young people to pursue a career in the construction industry and the fact that getting them on the job site is a big problem for our members. We’re thankful that he’s working with us to address this issue,” he explained. Tom Raver, Fireplace Distributors, attended the meeting and
Statewide Advocacy echoed Durham’s concerns, “We need a policy change that will help us get these kids internships so they can see up close the potential for them and learn firsthand about our industry. Our association is made up of so many segments of the construction industry where there are no other paths for learning than on-the-job experience. If we have someone who is under 18 and wants to learn more, but we can’t have them on the job site because of liability issues, that becomes a real challenge,” Raver elaborated.
“We need a policy change that will help us get these kids internships so they can see up close the potential for them and learn firsthand about our industry.” - Tom Raver
The state board members also discussed the anticipated 2017 special session expected to be called by Governor Matt Bevin later this year to address tax reform issues. “One of the issues that affects members is the historic preservation tax credit. Right now there is a cap. We’re asking for the cap to be increased and follow a guideline that’s similar to the one allowed on the federal level,” Durham explained. Bob Marrett, CMB Development, and Scott Jagoe, Jagoe
Homes, were also honored with HBAK leadership awards at the meeting. Congratulations! Housing and Building Industry Day Draws Enthusiasm and Support Nearly 30 members attended the February 15 Housing and Building Industry Day at the state capitol. According to BIA Vice President of Government Affairs Annie Fultz Dutton, there was a broad mix of members, such as builders, subcontractors and members of various segments, including banking and real estate. “We started off the day hearing from House Speaker Jeff Hoover, who expressed support for our industry, and we then had 11 meetings with legislators from our region representing both parties in the House and Senate. There was a lot of energy in the Capitol, and we had very valuable face time with our elected officials to tell them about key concerns facing our industry. We’re thankful for the time they spent with us.” There were several issues on the radar for members as they met with legislators that day; however, two major pieces of legislation were top-of-mind: HB 72 Prevents Frivolous Lawsuits Aimed at Stopping Development House Bill 72, referred to as the Appeals Bond bill, was introduced by Representative Jerry Miller that will help curb frivolous lawsuits designed to delay the development process.
BIA members took part in the 2017 Housing and Building Industry Day at the Capital. april 2017 13
Statewide Advocacy According to Durham, this issue hits home with many members and has been a top priority for the association. “We’ve seen firsthand investors and significant development projects leave our area in frustration because of frivolous appeals that have threatened economic developments. This legislation is good for the economy and for job growth in Louisville and other parts of the state,” he explained. Durham noted the impact this legislation could have not just for the BIA’s developers, but for the local economy in general. “A good example of this is when Walmart was considering building at 18th and Broadway, which would have created over 300 full-time jobs in an area which badly needed those jobs. But, because of a handful of citizens who filed a lawsuit and kept appealing it for more than a yearand-a-half, Walmart finally gave up and walked away feeling unwelcome. As a result, our community suffered,” Durham explained. The Appeals Bond bill had passed the House of Representatives the day prior to the Housing & Industry Day, so members thanked representatives in the House and encouraged its passage to members of the Senate. (*At press time, HB 72 still remains viable for passage in the last two days of the 2017 legislative session. The BIA Governmental Affairs Committee is

working hard to get this important bill signed into law.) The BIA would like to thank everyone who played a role in communicating their support of HB 72, including John Hollenbach, Hollenbach-Oakley, who serves as co-chair of the Government Affairs Committee and traveled to Frankfort to stand ready to testify in support of the bill. HB 112 Takes a Bite Out of Outdated Law House Bill 112, referred to as the Dog Bite Bill, addresses a commonsense approach to dealing with situations where landlords are held responsible for the actions of tenants’ dogs. Currently, if someone owns a building and is leasing it to someone who has a dog and that dog bites someone on the property, the building owner is held responsible. HB 112 updates Kentucky law to reflect a commonsense approach to passing along the responsibility to the dog owner. (*At press time, it had passed both the House and the Senate and was sent to the Governor to sign into law.)
Rep. Phil Moffett was one of eleven legislators who met with BIA members. 14 louisville builder • bialouisville.com
The day in Frankfort was jam-packed with productive meetings and a chance to thank legislators for their support of the building industry. As the Association keeps tabs on important issues, including those at the federal level, such as EPA regulations and the need for more federal transportation dollars to come to Kentucky, members are encouraged to get involved. Stay tuned for more information to hit inboxes on how to support the industry through the Association’s advocacy efforts.

Workforce Development: BIA Members Go Back to School March 7 & 9 , 2017 | Maryville Elementary School
Members of the BIA’s Workforce Development Committee visited Maryville Elementary School in Bullitt County on March 7 & 9 as part of the school’s College and Career Readiness Week. Members spoke to the students about the variety of jobs available in our industry. As you can tell from the pictures, the kids had a lot of fun asking questions! School visits like this help us spread the word about the great careers in the building trades. Thanks to BIA Members Mark Simpson, Phil Shoulders, Karen McKechnie, John Owens, Katharine Hatcher, and Wendy Graves for representing us!
Pat Durham, BIA Executive Vice President, spoke to students about career opportunities in the building industry. Durham said he was glad to finally find a group who would listen to him! 20 louisville builder • bialouisville.com

Mark Simpson Mark Simpson Builders BIA Vice-President
Defining BIA’s greatest strengths is a challenging task for Mark Simpson of Simpson Builders. A member of the Association for at least 20 years, he hesitates to list the strengths in order because he views all of them as critical to the industry. “Having quality people as members has contributed to the success of businesses that have survived economic downturns. Along with that, our education program is excellent,” he says. He also credits the BIA’s events, sponsorships and social opportunities as contributing factors to its reputation, effectiveness and longevity. The Building Industry Charitable Foundation, of which he is a member, is especially significant to him. Simpson has chaired both the Education and Registered Builder Committees and currently serves on the Executive Committee. Prior to that, he was on the Board of Directors. “We all have different talents that we can contribute. If we have 24 louisville builder • bialouisville.com
a passion for our business and our livelihood, we should all have a passion for the Association that helps us in so many ways,” he adds.

Networking cuts across many BIA activities and is a valuable asset of membership. The connections he has developed over the years are many. One such connection immediately comes
Building Connections to his mind. “I met Randy Stromquist three or four years ago when I was building a large home. The contractors I like to work with are the ones I can call or text and say I need something done, and it’s done. You don’t have to babysit them. Randy is one of those people,” he says about the account representative for Wholesale Hardwood Interiors. Stromquist finds that he networks more with other BIA associates than he does with builders. “There’s a real camaraderie among us. We are all advocates for our industry to help it grow so we have a future in the business 10 or 20 years down the road. I think Associate members really need to understand that,” he says.

Codes meetings have been particularly helpful to him as they keep him ahead of the curve. Also, being part of BICF has given him even more appreciation for the Association’s work.
David Epperson, outside salesman for PC Lumber, is another professional Simpson met through the BIA. “I originally knew Mark when I worked at Boland Maloney even though he wasn’t my customer. After I left that company, I called him about his work in Norton Commons. We got together and were able to get things going. It’s been a really good relationship,” says Epperson. He has been a BIA member for almost 25 years, attending meetings in Oldham, Shelby and Jefferson Counties. “Membership is very advantageous for getting to know builders but also people in many other areas. It’s a great way to became acquainted with all of them, to get referrals and to learn about projects that are happening or that will happen. At meetings I can find out what’s going on in their lives and talk about ways we can partner to do business together,” he says. “Somebody said recently that when you get a new sub or supplier, it’s kind of like dating, sort of testing each other to see if the relationship will work. I can’t say enough good things about David and PC,” says Simpson. Take a hint out of the trio’s playbooks. Today is the perfect time to start building new connections!
