Just a little over thirty days ago, May 31, 2016, to be exact, retiring Executive Vice President Chuck Kavanaugh completed his last day at the helm of the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville. His official retirement party went off without a hitch and providing Chuck with the plaudits he deserved and helping bring to an end his twenty-year career leading our Association. Receiving personal visits and formal remarks from such dignitaries as Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Congressman John Yarmuth, National Association of Home Builders Chairman of the Board Ed Brady of Bloomington, Illinois and letters of commendation from Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and Governor Matt Bevin, Chuck received a send-off fit for a king!

“His official retirement party went off without a hitch, providing Chuck with the plaudits he deserved and helping bring to an end his twenty-year career leading our Association.” Okay, so...now what happens? Well, if you believe in the old adage “time flies when you’re having fun”, then you will understand what it has been like in our first thirty days together! Let me be the first to tell you, there is never a dull moment at your BIA! In advocacy issues alone, we are dealing with many items that need our immediate attention. For example, we have been addressing everything from promoting sewers and infrastructure in the area around the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork (for future significant development and new homes area) to addressing Metro Louisville Government’s interest in bringing back roadway exactions related to new development to working with the governor’s economic development team to eliminate the antiquated policy of requiring cast iron piping in tall commercial/ multi-family

buildings to discussing the new MOVE Louisville transportation plan to figuring out ways to support MSD as they address the urgent need to modernize our aging sewer and storm water infrastructure. (Kudos to Tony Parrott, Executive Director of MSD, another “newbie” in his directorship role, for dealing with this issue head-on!) These few issues are but the “tip of the iceberg” of the 15-20 that we are dealing with on your behalf. More about this from Annie Dutton, BIA Director of Public Affairs and Public Policy, in the upcoming August issue of Louisville Builder. Oh, and did I mention to you the planning and preparation of this upcoming, teeny-tiny event known as “Homearama”? Don’t worry, we are in the capable hands of Gail Schell, Ally Sauer, Margie Brangers (our entire staff, really...) as we look forward to opening night! And wait until you see what we have in store for you at both Norton Commons and River Crest! You will be amazed! We have so much we want to achieve and accomplish in the years ahead. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments about how we can make our Association bigger, better and greater than it already is. My door, phone line and email are always open. Don’t be afraid to use them! Sincerely,

Pat Durham Executive Vice President Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville july 2016 5

Sneak Peek at the Incredible Homes on Display By Stacy Smith Rogers

Every Homearama is unique, but it’s safe to say that this year’s event is cause for the regional community to take notice. With a record 33 homes on display and nine of them showcased just outside of Jefferson County (another first), Homearama 2016 is offering the public a chance to see the incredible quality and variety of home building talent the Greater Louisville community has to offer! Energy efficiency will be a big talking point, especially in Norton Commons where all the homes on display use geothermal heating and air. Talented designers are putting the finishing touches on the homes as we speak (read) and they’re sure to impress and inspire. Here’s a sneak peek at the developments and the homes on display... About Norton Commons Designed as a place where residents can get away from it all without ever having to go far from home, Norton Commons 6 louisville builder • bialouisville.com

offers a lifestyle that makes it easy to live, work and play. In 2011, the development made its Homearama debut, with 22 homes on display. Since then, it has continued to draw residents who crave a neighborhood feel with activities, restaurants, shops and businesses all within walking distance of newly built homes designed in classic and traditional architectural styles. Located in eastern Jefferson County off Chamberlain Lane & Highway 22, over one-fourth of the development encompasses a system of parks, squares, plazas, trails, recreational and civic amenities. Annual neighborhood activities, including concerts, block parties, movie nights and holiday festivities are on the calendar yearround. With architecture reflective of some of Louisville’s favorite neighborhoods, Norton Commons serves as a link between future generations and preserving the heritage of the community. Mark Your Calendar Tour of Remodeled Homes August 13-14 - Noon to 6 p.m. $10 (cash or check only) – children six and under free www.bialouisville.com

Set for August 13-14, 2016 By Stacy Smith Rogers

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the Tour of Remodeled Homes, and a variety of projects are planned to be showcased August 13 and 14. Several of the homes have been entirely remodeled with complete changes in floor plans that transform historic residences into functional homes that focus on bringing families together and creating open, light-filled areas to gather. Creative ideas in home renovation will be in the spotlight as BIA’s remodeler members showcase their talents through some incredible examples of craftsmanship and innovative remodeling techniques. Most importantly, the Tour will generate continued awareness of the value of upgrading and improving homes, and the need to hire professionals that can be trusted to do the job right.

lowed for years. This Tour is a wonderful medium to demonstrate our quality, craftsmanship and process to the immediate market that will hopefully be deciding on remodels in the near future. We took this project on with first and foremost because the clients came across as understanding of the remodeling process, had the correct expectations of time, scope and budget that would be involved and were also wonderful people to deal with throughout the entire process. Our clients had been to Homearama last year and requested that we ‘turn their kitchen into a Homearama kitchen.’ It was a fun project that they have truly enjoyed and have taken every opportunity to share with their family, friends and neighbors.” – Justin McElfish, Castlerock Construction, Inc.

Why Showcase On The Tour? “The thing that most gets us excited about being on the Tour is being able to associate our brand with some of the top remodelers in Louisville – people that I have watched and fol-

“This project really excited me because it’s a true Mid-Century Modern home designed by a prominent Louisville architect in the 40’s and 50’s, Norman Sweet. The clients saw our work at the Tour last year and contacted us. It was built without a base-

what I am used to doing and it is very unique to Louisville. The clients came to me with the idea of doing a strict Mid-Century Modern design. My firm is really known for doing traditional classic design, so this really did push me outside of my comfort 12:31 PM zone. In researching this type of architecture and design philosophy, I really came to embrace the whole concept of minimalization and crisp clean lines. The clients are fantastic to work with, as they have very strong ideas on what they want to see, and they are open to ideas and truly desire a unique property.” – John Waller, J.P. Building Connections Building Connections is a new Louisville Builder column that will showcase the experiences and work of three BIA members and will link each member to another individual involved in the Association. By Nancy Miller

Don Karem Registered Builder & SMC Member Karem Built Homes BIA President

Tom Raver Associate Member Fireplace Distributors, Inc. BIA Associate Vice-President

“I joined what was at the time Home Builders Association of Louisville because I thought it was important to have the reputation of a Registered Builder and to let the public know about the quality of my work and my adherence to strict standards,” says Don Karem, President of Karem Built Homes, and current BIA president. He stresses BIA’s value in making connections with other people in the industry and of keeping upto-date on the latest developments in the Louisville building community. He also points to personal benefits of BIA involvement, such as developing lasting friendships. “The more you give to BIA, the more you’ll get out of it. Our business is about getting to know people and developing relationships. Through the Association I have met Tom Raver, who’s on the Board and the Executive Committee and has done so much for the organization. He’s a great role model for a new person coming in,” says Karem.

Raver joined HBAL in 1991 and became heavily involved seven or eight years ago when he realized the impact advocacy and working with regulations and permitting issues could have on the building industry. “BIA has helped me grow professionally. It has kept me on task, made me a better business person, and kept me abreast of where the economy is heading. Also, it enables me to sell to builders. Most of the active members are customers of ours. And along the way, I have made some pretty good friends,” says Raver, President of Fireplace Distributors. One of the BIA members he has come to know is Lauren Thieneman Scott of Carpet Specialists. “She has become very involved in committee work and in the Emerging Professionals group. She’s an excellent example of a new, young member who is contributing so much to BIA,” says Raver.

Lauren Thieneman Scott Affiliate Member Carpet Specialists Interior Designer “BIA is a good way to network and to get in front of builders I may not have met otherwise,” says Thieneman Scott, interior designer and salesperson at Carpet Specialist. “As a new face and young member, it was a little nerve-racking to network because I didn’t know anyone, but that has all changed. Everyone opened their arms to me,” she says. On the Associates Committee, she has offered suggestions for growing and improving events such as Table Top Night and Homearama. About her participation in the Emerging Professionals group, she says, “It’s informal and a terrific way to meet other young professionals and to learn from the experience of more established BIA members,” she says. She has also been an active participant in Sales & Marketing Council meetings. Looking to the future, she plans to become even more involved in BIA. “It has been such a good experience so far, and I know it will get even better,” says Thieneman Scott. july 2016 19

Building Community By Stacy Smith Rogers

Step up annual company outings to include team building ideas that bring staff together It’s summertime! Many businesses have scheduled or are in the midst of planning company picnics, outings and special events designed to celebrate their staff and pump up team morale. While “Anne” from Accounting is digging out her famous jello salad recipe and other staff members are racing to be the first to sign up for chips and two-liter drinks, business owners should be thinking of ways to go beyond the traditional company picnic to build teamwork and create shared memories. Everyone likes a good potato salad, but centering the outing around food can end up being a let down for participants. Consider pairing the event with activities families will enjoy and a venue that will offer a comfortable environment for staff members to relax and enjoy themselves. Ideally, the event should be hosted somewhere other than the workplace. Numerous Louisville-area venues are available for special event hosting, including parks. (The Parklands of Floyds Fork, for example, has a variety of options. Check out the “Things to Do” pull-down menu at www.theparklands.org.)

The key, no matter where you host, is to build upon the company’s vision while making employees feel special, engaged and valued Company outings are also a good way for team members to get to know colleagues they may not normally interact with. Including families offers the added benefit of encouraging interaction and letting employees know the business cares not only about their productivity at work, but their life outside of the office. There are businesses that can be hired to organize team 20 louisville builder • bialouisville.com

building activities, including interactive scavenger hunts, movie making, improv, murder mysteries and more. (Google “team building louisville ky” and you’ll find several companies.) However, planning an activity can be as simple as renting a karaoke machine or staging a friendly competition of sorts. With the Olympics center stage this summer, that offers a great opportunity to plan events where employees’ families might enjoy teaming up together to go for a gold medal in the always-popular and forever-classic sack race competition. Whatever the activity, keep it fun and engaging. Here are a few tips: • If you’re undecided about where to host and what do to, narrow it down to three choices that fit your budget and let the employees vote. Make it a fun voting experience and announce the winning venue with just enough elaboration to spark some curiosity that will prompt employees to circle it on their calendars. • Design an electronic invitation and brand the event to be something special. • If it’s in the budget, consider offering some door prizes, such as gift cards that fit the theme of the event. • Hire someone (or enlist the help of a volunteer) to make a short video of the event, interviewing families on site with a particular question that might spark some fun (and appropriate) responses. After the event, create a highlight video that you share at the next staff meeting.

Amy Elliott Named Director of Member Services By Stacy Smith Rogers

Amy Elliott was recently named BIA’s new Director of Member Services. Elliott comes to the Association with an extensive background in the industry, most recently serving as inside sales associate for John Deere Landscapes (Now SiteOne Landscape Supply) where her primary responsibilities included event planning, internal and external communications, customer retention and recruitment, sales promotions and sales training support. As Director of Member Services, she’s already putting those skills to use in her new role at BIA, as well as the valuable experience she gained owning her own lawn care service company, SunDial Lawn Services, LLC, where she serviced various properties for local developers, builders and residential clients. In 2002-2004 and 2008, her company helped maintain the common grounds and select builder properties for Homearama in Locust Creek. Earlier in her career, Elliott served as greens keeper at Hunting Creek Country Club until she transitioned into athletic field maintenance as part of the University of Louisville Athletic Staff. “I am extremely excited to begin this new chapter in my professional career, and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with

members of the association I once helped serve, in addition to making new connections within the building industry,” Elliott said. She and her husband, Vince, reside in eastern Jefferson County. She enjoys hiking, traveling, spending time with family, and landscaping whenever possible. Elliott can attest to the many benefits of being a member of BIA. Her former company, SunDial, was previously an associate member of the association. In addition to the tangible benefits, such as access to insurance, workers compensation and opportunities to advertise directly to the building industry market, BIA offers so many intangible benefits. Government advocacy and affiliation with the state and national associations are great examples. With so many consumers doing research before they buy products or hire contractors, it makes sense to be a member of BIA, which is a trusted resource for consumers and a community partner that makes a difference in the region. Know someone who needs to be a member? Ask them to give Amy Elliott a call at 429-6000!

Kieler Henry Farewell

Kieler Henry spent the last two and a half years as the BIA Director of Communications. He painstakingly worked on publications, event materials and special projects all while attending Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Louisville seeking dual graduate degrees in business and theology. Kieler, his wife Maria and their sons Luke, 4, and Denver, 9 months, will be moving to Turkey. Kieler accepted a position as a professor at a university, and he will also begin his lifelong dream of becoming a Christian missionary. The BIA staff would like to bid Kieler and his family farewell on their new journey. Congratulations!

Erin Clifford was diagnosed with pseudomyogenic hemangendothelioma at the age of 16. This extremely rare form of cancer affects approximately 150 people worldwide. Of this tiny pool of people, Erin is one of 10 people on the planet whose bones are affected by this disease. After 13 months of tests and chemotherapy, she had a below the knee amputation in December of last year. “As parents, we never would have thought this would happen to either of our kids. We are so amazed at what Erin has accomplished, her motivation, her positivity, and the inspiration she has given to so many people. She graduated high school a year early, has given motivational speeches, and “paid it forward” in many ways. She is the strongest person we know and are proud to say she is our daughter,” Leslie Clifford, Erin’s mom, said. Registered Remodelers Brandon Bailey and Jon Steimel of Bailey Remodeling and Construction, in cooperation with the Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF), fully remodeled the Clifford’s bathroom. Erin is now able to use the shower and other amenities both safely and easily thanks to the generous work of the BICF members. Leslie expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Clifford family: “The gift of the bathroom remodel has been so amazing and so appreciated. Not only is it easier but it is safer for her to shower. We can not thank everyone involved in this project enough, especially Bailey Remodeling and Construction and the BICF for making her life a little easier and as parents the comfort of one less thing to worry about when it comes to her safety. We hope that this program can help as many people as possible because it truly is a blessing for us.”
