Celebrating 50 Years of Homearama by Gail Schell
BIA Vice President of Events and Operations For the 50th year Homearama will showcase the finest in custom-built new homes in the Greater Louisville area. Over the decades, Homearama has become the destination event of the summer for many visitors looking for inspiration for their own homes. “From a marketing perspective Homearama is a great way to get your product in front of thousands of people. We noticed that while the number of people who want to buy a Homearama home is very small, many will buy in the future and Homearama is a great way to establish a relationship,” commented Rocky Pusateri, Executive Vice President of Elite Homes Inc. Homearama also served as a training ground for future BIA Builder members. Jason Orthober of Orthober Custom Homes worked the front door of his father’s Homearama homes during the 1980s. “I really enjoyed the excitement of thousands of people walking through the home we built. I enjoyed talking and meeting all the different people during those two weeks,” commented Jason, who has built seven Homearama homes including House 8 at this year’s Homearama Poplar Woods. Similarly, Billy Doelker of Key Homes has built four Homearama homes, but his first experience at Homearama was working for Tony Lockhart and Frank Taylor during the 1990s. Billy said Homearama has strong name recognition in the Louisville market and the builders who participate in Homearama are often viewed as leaders in the industry. “Participating in Homearama was an excellent decision for my business. Having a spec home is one thing, but having the public walk through a Homearama house is a whole new level.” A lot has changed in the building industry since Homearama premiered in 1968 with 12 homes in the Hurstbourne neighborhood. Despite some challenging economic times in the late 2000s, labor and material shortages, Homearama and the BIA persevered. Throughout five decades and 976 Homearama homes, the Association’s commitment to showcasing the quality and craftsmanship of our members’ products and services has not waivered. BICF and BIA Members Join in Project to Benefit Boys & Girls Haven By Nancy Miller BIA’s Building Industry Charitable Foundation was presented with a unique opportunity to directly affect the work of one of Louisville’s most respected non-profit organizations, Boys & Girls Haven, on Goldsmith Lane. Boys & Girls Haven provides stability, education and life skills development for abandoned, abused and neglected young people. Its programs encompass residential and foster care, independent living and community-based preventive services. A friendship between BIA Past President Bob Thieneman, Vice President of Residential Operations for RJ Thieneman, and Steve Luckett, who is in charge of Boys & Girls Haven’s capital projects, led to a major project that would benefit Boys & Girls Haven. Thieneman volunteered to be part of a team that helped clean up the grounds at Boys & Girls Haven. During that time, Luckett gave him a tour and explained the organization’s mission, and Thieneman was able to meet a few staff members and a couple of residents. “I believe in BIA and, particularly, in the BICF. When I saw what was going on at Boys & Girls Haven, I thought about putting the two together. Boys & Girls Haven is talking about doing a major fundraiser for
potential expansion but, in the meantime, they have very specific needs for ongoing maintenance and upgrades. Our association is involved in a lot of things on its own behalf. But I think it’s important for everybody to give back in some way. It’s also good public relations for the BIA to reach out to the community to be seen as more than a group that’s looking out only for home builders or commercial contractors. The mission of BICF is geared to the needs of the community from a housing standpoint. I believed working with Boys & Girls Haven would align with that mission,” says Thieneman. He contacted the BICF chairman Brandon Bailey, owner of Bailey Remodeling & Construction, to discuss the role the BICF could play. “Brandon is an excellent BICF chairman and is very good at not only organizing projects but is also compassionate toward the cause and understands the mission,” adds Thieneman. “When Bob called me about participating in some way, I thought the BICF probably wouldn’t be the best fit to be a major contributor to the capital campaign but thought we could help with some improvements on their existing campus. When they followed up, they requested assistance with one of their buildings that houses about 20 youth but didn’t have

any hot water. They weren’t showering on a regular basis or, in some cases, at all. If the residents have been through major trauma, the least we can do is give them hot water,” says Bailey. The BICF initially agreed to put $5,000 toward the purchase of two industrial water heaters but upon further investigation found that they would cost $10,000. The committee met again and decided to cover the cost of the water heaters. Pete Ostaseski, general manager at Ferguson, provided the water heaters at a discounted rate. Boys & Girls Haven covered the cost of the labor which was given at a significant discount by St. Matthews Plumbing. Bailey recounts that Doug Peacock, owner of St. Matthews Plumbing, was immediately receptive to participating. “We have a close relationship with Brandon. He and I had talked a while ago about what he does with the BIA and the BICF. He knew that my partner and master plumber, Andy Skaggs, and I were interested in getting involved. Brandon gave us the chance to do that with Boys & Girls Haven,” explains Peacock. “I think Boys & Girls Haven will have ways in which we can support them in the future. They know to call us. We’ll be there to help them.” “This was about an $18,000 project that cost Boys & Girls Haven only about $3,000. The BICF impact was worth $15,000 but cost us only $10,000 because of BIA members stepping up with their discounts,” says Bailey. The water heater project is only one recent example of the BIA and the BICF integrating into the community. The partnership between the BICF, Ferguson and St. Matthews Plumbing was an undeniable benefit to Boys & Girls Haven and it was reflective of BIA members’ generosity and commitment to contributing talent and resources to support the work of essential non-profits in the city.

Myriad Expressions of Innovation and Individuality By Nancy Miller The countdown to the 32nd year of the Tour of Remodeled Homes is speeding up with excitement and anticipation among remodelers, returning visitors and those who are eager to see how BIA remodelers are masters of home transformations. Tickets for the Tour of Remodeled Homes are $10 and can be purchased at any of the homes. BIA members can purchase discounted tickets for $5 through the BIA office. Homeowners who are considering a remodel project often consult in-the-news websites such as Houzz and Pinterest or refer to glossy

magazines and television shows. There’s a better, up close and personal way to see what’s trending and fabulous in remodeling – the 2017 Tour of Remodeled Homes! This year’s Tour features 11 homes, each with striking individuality. There is a home for every style preference. Visitors will see how remodelers enhance Craftsman, traditional and contemporary houses. There is even a French Country and a Spanish Mission home on the Tour. Homeowners whose remodeling plans focus on a kitchen or bath will find

exquisite examples of creativity in overall design as well as small details that have a major impact. For homeowners with an ambitious idea of a full-home renovation, there are hundreds of ideas for floorplans, cabinetry, flooring, lighting, innovative storage solutions and design accoutrements. Geographical diversity is another reason why the 2017 Tour will be one of the best ever. The tour features homes in Anchorage, Prospect, the Highlands, Crescent Hill, St. Matthews and inviting neighborhoods in between. Several of the remodelers return to the tour after having participated in the past. Others are new to the tour. All remodeling companies bring imaginative inspiration to their projects that display superb craftsmanship. Ben Tyler, of Ben Tyler Building and Remodeling, first participated in the Tour of Remodeled Homes in the 1980s. “I think it’s a great marketing tool. We get to show off our work and reach a good audience of people who are interested in remodeling their own homes. Years ago, people bought homes with the intention of remodeling. Now many want to buy homes that have been partially or completely remodeled. And many people prefer to remodel their existing home rather than build or move to another home. Both of those factors have been real boosts to the remodeling industry,” he says. An outdated home that functions poorly is not only aesthetically unappealing, it can adversely affect a family’s lifestyle, notes Brandon Bailey, of Bailey Remodeling & Construction: “I’m excited about the Tour of Remodeled Homes because I like sharing with people how we can change the way they live and use their house to improve the quality of their lives. The Tour gives us a venue to talk to prospective clients about the various ways we would do that.” Penny Love, of Design Innovations, is featuring a home that’s approximately a hundred years old. “It will be fun to show off the drastic
LouisvilleRemodelTour.com
‘before and after’ of this house. When visitors see the ‘before’ pictures, they’ll see a kitchen that’s very dark and dreary and dated. I’m looking forward to them seeing how the remodel gave it a completely new character that still maintains the integrity of the house that has its own history. The Tour will be a great way to show many possibilities to someone who’s in a quandary of what they can do with an old house,” says Love. Visit all eleven homes from noon to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13.

BIA Member Appreciation Lunch
Bullitt County Council The Bullitt County Council held its first meeting of the year on May 23 at the recently renovated Mt. Washington City Annex. The guest speaker was Matt Bullock, Chief Engineer of District 5 for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Mr. Bullock discussed the various current and planned road projects in Bullitt County. Thank you the meeting sponsors 84 Lumber, PPG Paints and Sam Kinnaird’s Flooring. The next Bullitt County Council meeting is slated for the fall.

On May 24 the BIA hosted a Member Appreciation luncheon that was open to all members of the Association. Originally scheduled to take place in the front parking lot, Mother Nature caused for some slight adjustments to be made. Gathering tables were instead set on the welcoming front porch and inside the front lobby. There was no way we were going to let a little rain put a damper on this annual event. 150 BIA members stopped in to enjoy a free catered lunch provided by the Mark’s Feed Store Food Truck and to engage with other members of the Association. The lobby and porch were overflowing with members having a great time and enjoying some casual conversations with one another. Luncheons like this provide another way for the BIA Associates Committee, Builders, Board of Directors, and staff to show their appreciation for the continuous support and dedication of our members. If you missed this year’s event, be sure to plan to join us at the next one! Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsors, PC Home Center and Carpet Specialists, to our Lunch Sponsors L&N Federal Credit Union and K-I Lumber & Building Materials, and to our Entertainment Sound System Sponsor, Automated Living. Without their generous contributions, events like this simply wouldn’t be possible.
