70th Annual Home, Garden & Remodeling Show, presented by Champion and powered by LG&E set for March 2-4 At 10 a.m. on Friday, March 2, visitors will walk through the doors of the 2018 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show and make history as the show kicks off its 70th year. Prior to their arrival, hundreds of people, companies and staff will have contributed thousands of hours to what promises to be the most exciting show in seven decades. Presented by Champion Windows and powered by LG&E, the show is designed to educate and inform, inspire and motivate, and yes, entertain! More than 350 vendors will be on hand with the latest products and services. There will be surprises in every aisle and around every corner. The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show says goodbye to winter and gives a hearty welcome to spring. It’s where conversations with experts lead to picture book homes and backyards, old friends gather and new friends are made. Champion Windows returns for its second year as Presenting Sponsor and numerous years as an exhibitor. Andy Wimsatt says the show typically produces between 150 and 200 appointments for his company each year, making it an extremely valuable sales and marketing tool. “Having the honor of being the presenting sponsor is a tremendous branding tool. At the show, its hard to walk around without seeing Champion multiple times, as we are the bag sponsor as well. While the layout of our booth has not yet been finalized, it will definitely be welcoming and feature a wide range of Champion products,” he says. Celebrities such as jockey Pat Day, meteorologist Jay Cardosi, and radio personality, Gary Sullivan, were featured celebrities in Champion’s booth 20

last year. What is certain is that the exhibit will tell the story of Champion’s selection of windows, doors, siding, roofing and sunrooms. LG&E is reprising its role as the Show’s “Powered By” sponsor. Liz Pratt says of her company’s participation, “The Louisville Home, Garden and Remodeling Show is a wonderful annual event that inspires new and creative ideas for home remodeling and design. As a longtime sponsor, it’s a great venue where we can connect with our customers and attendees to answer their energy-related questions and offer more information about our customer programs and important services to consider before starting new projects at home.” Kevin Gray, President of ADC Paving, considers the show a jump start to the spring season and a major brand recognition boost to his business. Having participated for four years, he adds, “There’s a great crowd every year, and people are engaged and interested. I like being out in the public and talking about the company, our business and the BIA.” ADC Paving tracks all of the leads from the show, resulting in 10 to 20 percent of the company’s annual sales. He plans to again present a display that allows visitors to visualize how a road or driveway is constructed of a dirt sub base, a stone layer and an asphalt layer. Stansbury Electric President, Bruce Stansbury, credits the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show not only with producing immediate results for his business, but also for increasing name recognition that will pay off long after the show is concluded.
Exhibiting at the show for more than a decade, Louisville Tile Distributors utilizes the event as an extension of its showroom. “Since people don’t buy tile very often, they seldom get out and look at it. So, the show gives them an opportunity to see what’s new. And they can also walk around and see things they can coordinate with the tile, seeing different products that would go into their job,” says Louisville Tile’s Jacquelyn Burkey. “At the show we get to meet all sorts of people who might not ordinarily come into the showroom. We hope they will get a taste for the styles, colors and sizes of tile we can show them if they decide to come in and visit us in the showroom.” Tom Raver, of Fireplace Distributors, first attended the show in 1991 when his father was head of the company. Tom is now Chairman of the Home Show. “We’ve been an exhibitor for 35 or 40 years in a row. We have gone into a mode of awareness for Fireplace Distributors, and not so much a sales mode during the three days of the show. We want a select group of potential customers who want to buy now instead of five months from now. While we used to get information from everyone who walked into our booth, we felt we were spinning our wheels with people who weren’t ready to buy at that point. Now we ask better questions to determine who could be an immediate customer. We aren’t as aggressive with the other folks. And, of course, in a way, a fireplace is a long-term type of sale. We’re also hoping that being there year after year, having the same people stop by the booth may trigger something in their minds when they’re ready to buy,” he says. Although Raver will spend most of his time in the Fireplace Distributors’ booth, he’s sure to stroll around the other booths and to visit the highlights of the show which will include: The Belgard Outdoor Living Pavilion that brings you the best in the region of landscape and hardscape techniques, and that will inspire you to create new living space in your backyard—whether your dream is an outdoor kitchen, firepit or entertainment area. The Living in Louisville area, brought to you by Ditsler Insurance Agency, that will showcase the best of our city’s attractions and features, The Cooking Stage, brought to you by Ball Homes, Inc., that features some of Louisville’s biggest culinary names work

YOUR KITCHEN IN 2018 Your kitchen is most likely the most important room in your house: where the kids do their homework, where your friends come for coffee, where you pay your bills and — for most of us — where we cook our meals. It’s also the first thing that home shoppers look at, and that’s why the experts on the National Association of Home Builders’ Design Committee pay close attention to color, pattern, lighting and appliance trends.
And that oven? It’s still likely to be stainless steel, but in a black stainless steel, which is now among the most popular colors of kitchen appliances. Other popular shades include deep jewel colors, especially navy blue, in high-end ovens.
Here’s what these experts are seeing as they look to the kitchen of 2018:
Counters and Cabinets
Open floor plans
Granite countertops remain a classic choice for the traditionalist, but there are plenty of new options to choose from. Quartz countertops have improved remarkably since
The kitchen as a gathering place is here to stay, say these designers. And as islands get bigger, some are swapping the kitchen table and “command center” desk for a comfy armchair or two where you can sit and scroll through your tablet or phone while you enjoy a cup of tea. Storage remains very important, and the clean lines of today’s kitchen design — fewer knickknacks and less clutter on the countertops — mean more home owners are asking for bigger mud rooms with ample shelves for everything from canned goods to vases. Technology
The “smart home” is becoming more evident in today’s kitchen. Just as thermostats and security devices can be controlled via a smart phone, so too can ovens, refrigerators and other appliances. This trend, designers say, is only growing. LouisvilleHomeShow.com

they were first introduced — coming in larger slabs so having a seam between countertop pieces is less likely. When it comes to cabinets, top designers are saying that intricate designs and fancy knobs are very “last century.” Think flat panels and clean lines, with a focus on maximizing storage. And as more families use their kitchen as a hub for entertaining, the “beverage center” is coming into its own this year. Having a cabinet and countertop section with a sink, icemaker and minifridge lets your guests pour their own drinks or hungry children get their own snacks without congesting the other areas of the kitchen. “The trends we are seeing with kitchen design in 2018 have a lot to do with function. People not only want their kitchen to have high style, but they want it to work with their everyday life and, in a sense, make daily activities easier. We are incorporating hidden appliances, storage, and convenience into the layout of all of our kitchens. Black is going to be really big this year. You will see it a lot with plumbing fixtures, lighting and appliances. You will also see navy and dark green cabinet finishes hitting the market more. Large islands and open floor plans are always a big hit and are here to stay,” said Casey Ernst of SB Home Renovations. Choosing a Registered Builder or Remodeler By Nancy Miller
When considering building a new home or remodeling an existing home, it’s critical to select the right individual or company for your individual project. It is a decision that will help determine the quality and cost of your remodel or new construction.
Checklist for Hiring a Registered Builder or Registered Remodeler • It’s also important that you become familiar with the business of a prospective remodeler
The Building Industry Association of Louisville has Registered Remodeler and Registered Builder members who:
• Are informed about new products. • Are linked to a network of industry professionals on the local, state and national level. • Have a commitment to continuing education. • Have the ability to address special building issues/techniques. • Have access to a conciliation process should problems arise that cannot be easily resolved. • Have experience in the home or commercial construction profession for a specified period of time. • Have demonstrated financial and on-site responsibilities. • Are a full-time professional who derives his or her principal income from construction, remodeling or related real estate activities. • Have submitted the names of previous customers as references • Have Registered Remodeler or Builder sponsors with personal knowledge of their remodeling/construction activities and business integrity. • Must have acceptable credit history. • Appear before a committee for a personal interview. • Must agree to take part in continuing education. • Must agree to abide by the Code of Ethics of the BIA. 28

or builder and that his or her experience relates to your individual project. You might find it helpful to use this checklist when choosing a Registered Remodeler or Builder member of the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville.
• Check to be sure that you’re talking to a Registered Remodeler or Builder. • Check to be sure the remodeler or builder has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers. • Ask how long they have been in the remodeling or building business. You want to be sure they’ll be around after the project is complete to service warranties and to address issues that could develop. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. • Check with the Better Business Bureau to learn of any complaints. • Inquire whether the remodeler or builder has sufficient workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction- or remodeling-related accidents on your premises. It’s a good idea to ask for proof of insurance. • Check references. • Check for quality of workmanship and materials of previous projects. • Be sure you are able to easily communicate with the person. • Ask for a complete and clearly written contract. Review it carefully. • Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the remodeler or builder is unable to pay for materials and labor as the project proceeds, there could be potential problems. • Look for these logos: • Visit BIALouisville.com for lists of Registered Remodelers and Builders.

TURN YOUR BACKYARD INTO
GREAT LIVING SPACE When you think of making home improvements, the interior and exterior of your home may get the most focus. But there is also a lot of potentially great living space just outside your door. Here are a few ways to make your back (or front) yard a seamless extension of your home for entertaining and enjoying the days and evenings of summer, fall and beyond. OUTDOOR LIVING AND DINING ROOMS, KITCHENS It’s becoming more common to see cushioned chairs, benches and tables arranged on a separated patio or adjoining the home, often under an awning or roof but still very much in the open air of your backyard. Start off on the right foot with a properly installed and graded patio of stone or concrete and you can enjoy meals or just have a comfortable place to relax with friends and family. Some go further and create an outdoor kitchen complete with a grill, sink, refrigerator, and countertop 30
2018 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Guide & Magazine
and storage space, often built right into a patio’s stonework. Be sure to buy furniture, rugs and accessories that have been designed for outdoor or outdoor/indoor use. FIRE PITS AND FIREPLACES Another more recent trend is having a skilled professional install a freestanding brick or stone fireplace near a seating or entertaining area in your backyard. It can create a sense of privacy while still leaving you out in nature, as well as provide a welcome glow and warmth into the fall months. Likewise, fire pits can be permanently installed to provide a safe, appealing glow to your outdoor gathering. PATIOS AND WALKWAYS Is your backyard patio a square or rectangular slab of concrete? Think outside the box, as the saying goes, and expand or replace
that drab slab with a rounded or flowing contoured patio. There are many options to choose from, and even the least expensive materials like concrete have come a long way with varied textures, visual appeal and durability. Add a meandering walkway through a garden space and beyond to draw your backyard, landscaping and patio area together into an inviting, cohesive living space.
“Outdoor living spaces are becoming one of the main features that clients ask for when building or remodeling a home.” - Grant Jones
STONE GARDENS Rocks may be an unwelcome site when you are installing fence posts or digging a patio or a hole to place a plant, but don’t toss them away just yet. Stones can add color and texture to a garden, and larger rocks can create their own unique focal point. Add new dimension to your backyard with stones large or small. Think of it this way — you’ll never have to water them! PERGOLAS AND OUTDOOR LIGHTING Break up, instead of block out, the daylight sun with wooden structures like pergolas to bring some welcome shade without creating a barrier between you and the outdoors you are enjoying. At night, these same structures can feature lighting
elements designed specifically for outdoor use to add a subtle but helpful glow in the evening. Lighting can also be put to great use along your patio and walkways, providing a lit space for safety and appeal without taking away from the night-time ambience. Installing elements like these into your home’s outdoor space is a great way to expand the enjoyment of your home. But don’t be shy to contact the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville [bialouisville.com] to find contractors with the necessary expertise to help you with your project. When it comes to permanent and more costly fixtures such as fireplaces, patios and walkways, and even outdoor kitchens, they will work better, be safer and last longer when properly installed. “Outdoor living spaces are becoming one of the main features that clients ask for when building or remodeling a home. Our clients are looking for the ability to open up their home for entertaining, enjoying family time, or a serene setting to enjoy a cup of coffee. The possibilities are endless when it comes to outdoor living spaces. My clients get excited about customizing that space, which fuels my passion to design and build them something truly unique,” said Grant Jones, the owner of Jones Landscape + Design. TREND ALERT:
Wet Rooms Are Today’s Choice for Beautiful, Usable Bathrooms Inviting, accommodating and a feast for the eyes—wet rooms are showing up in more and more homes and wowing visitors at new-home showcases. Wet rooms—essentially open-concept or barrier-free bathrooms—are tiled continuously from floor to ceiling and across the floor surface, giving a sleek, unified appearance. The shower is open to the room or enclosed in clear glass, and has no raised threshold to step over. Sinks, countertops and vanities mounted to the walls hover above the unbroken plane of the floor. The wet room’s uninterrupted sight lines give a feeling of space to even a relatively small room. The continuous floor surface makes for easy cleanup and allows people in wheelchairs or with restricted mobility to move freely.
Whether you choose soothing earth tones and textures, cool minimalist grays, whites and blacks, or whimsical colors and patterns, the wet room creates an eye-catching display. “The general colors we are seeing through the showroom are still whites, grays, and taupes with a new interest in creams. The trend continues to be Carrara marble looks in various sizes for the floor and a white subway wall with maybe an accent of the Carrara through a pencil or chair rail moulding. Penny round and hexagons are also still popular choices for the main floor as well as shower floors. Clean, simple, and classic,” said Robin Straub, Interior Designer for Louisville Tile Distributors.
Here are a few things to consider when designing your wet room:
CURBLESS SHOWER Because the entire room is waterproof, your curbless shower also can be completely open to the room, with no enclosure at all. Just be sure there’s enough space to place the toilet and sink where they won’t get splashed by spray from the shower. Glass enclosures with seamless glass doors are another

popular option. They’ll contain water on all sides without impeding the view. Or sometimes simply a slab partition between the shower and the toilet will do the trick, leaving the front of the shower open to the rest of the room. The slab may be a foot or two short of the ceiling and face the doorway to minimize its effect on the visual flow.
“The trend continues to be Carrara marble looks in various sizes for the floor and a white subway wall with maybe an accent of the Carrara through a pencil or chair rail moulding.” - Robin Straub
Threshold drains—or grates that are flush with the tile floor— may define the edge of the shower area without interrupting the floor’s flow. Some drains even glow from within, using interior colored or white LED lighting for an extra flair and to help orient a person under the shower’s spray. Another popular option is adding a place to sit in the shower. A built-in slate ledge, matching or contrasting with the wall tile, a wallmounted drop-down bench in bamboo or a free-standing teak stool is a handy feature for anyone and contributes to the overall design.
Walker Zanger Duquesa
FIXTURES Floating vanities, attached to the wall without legs, and floating countertops look great with today’s vessel sinks and minimalist faucets. In addition to their sleek look, these features also provide sink access for anyone in a wheel chair. Drawers or shelves attached underneath or on each side of the sink provide storage. PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION To be sure your wet room keeps the water where it’s supposed to be, it’s important that everything be installed just right, and that might require a professional. Floor grading is key—constructed to slope gently and almost imperceptibly, but effectively, toward drains. Tile must be properly installed and sealed to prevent leaks. Once it’s done right, your wet room will be easy to use, to clean and to enjoy—a lovely oasis in your home. Add Green to Your Home, and Your Pocketbook, by Remodeling
The rapid growth of green building means that new home owners can take advantage of the lower operating and maintenance costs that come with these energy- and resourceefficient homes. But for the 120 million existing homes in the United States, remodeling is the only way for home owners to incorporate green practices. NAHB Remodelers offer the following suggestions to home owners who want to increase their home’s efficiency, decrease costs and take advantage of the other benefits that green offers. INSTALL MAXIMUM INSULATION IN THE AREA TO BE REMODELED.
Forty percent of the energy consumed in a typical house goes to heating and cooling. Adding insulation is an easy way to increase efficiency. Insulation is rated by its ability to resist heat flow, commonly known as “R-value.” The higher the R-value, the better its ability to resist heat flow. Adding insulation will help save energy costs, increase comfort by better controlling temperature and improve indoor air quality by eliminating many gaps through which dirt, dust, and other impurities can enter. One technology that is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners is spray foam insulation. Hershel Graber, of Graber Insealators, said “Spray Foam Insulation benefits a family in many ways: Air sealing all cracks and crevices keeps extreme temperatures, pollen and anything else from entering a home (unless a door or window is open)! Homeowners experience a comfortable and healthy living area along with lower utility bills 36
2018 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Guide & Magazine
after spray foam insulation is installed.” Graber also offered the following advice, “When remodeling a home, it’s a chance for a homeowner to take a step back and look at the current efficiency of the entire home and really tackle the least efficient areas. Replacing one item like the HVAC is great when it is time, but make sure you have the proper insulation installed to keep the “bought heating and air” indoors and not let it leak out. If the proper insulation is installed in the appropriate areas, the HVAC system can normally be reduced in size which saves cost and will increase comfort levels. Make sure to partner the HVAC and Insulation contractors together on your plans – not only will it increase the efficiency of your home – it will increase comfort and lower utility bills.” INSTALL HIGH-EFFICIENCY WINDOWS INSTEAD OF THOSE THAT JUST MEET THE ENERGY CODE.
Ordinary window glass transmits ultraviolet heat rays from the sun, which can increase your air conditioning bill dramatically. ENERGY STAR windows can help control this effect. These windows may have two or more panes of glass, warm-edge spacers between the panes, improved framing materials and microscopically thin metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on windows to reduce radiative heat flow. SEAL ALL EXTERIOR PENETRATIONS IN THE AREA BEING REMODELED.
You can reduce cold air drafts and heat loss by inspecting your home from the inside and outside and plugging cracks
or openings. Be sure to check the areas where window frames meet the structure or siding of the house. Use caulking to seal all small cracks on non-moving surfaces and weatherstripping on windows, doors and other movable parts of the home.
a year. Over its 20-year lifespan a solar heater will prevent more than 50 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. A low-cost option is to wrap insulation around your heater, which can reduce standby heat losses by 25 to 45 percent.
PURCHASE ONLY ENERGY STAR-RATED APPLIANCES. ENERGY STAR-rated appliances, ranging from dishwashers and refrigerators to computers and televisions, meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Qualified refrigerators, dishwashers and vent fans incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50 percent less energy and water than standard models, more than making up for the slightly higher costs of these products.
PURCHASE THE HIGHEST EFFICIENCY HVAC SYSTEM YOU CAN AFFORD.
INSTALL LOW-FLOW WATER PLUMBING FIXTURES. In the average home, flushing toilets accounts for some 30 percent of water usage. By using low-flow plumbing fixtures such as toilets, faucet aerators and showerheads, you can save up to 25 percent of that water compared to conventional fixtures while providing the same utility. UPGRADE TO AN ENERGY STAR-RATED OR TANKLESS WATER HEATER.
Tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand at a preset temperature rather than storing it. Replacing an electric water heater with a solar model can reduce costs by up to 80 percent
Over a 10-year period, the average home owner spends more than $10,000 for heating and cooling. Installing high efficiency ENERGY STAR HVAC equipment can reduce utility costs on average by 10 to 30 percent over minimum efficiency equipment. It also can improve home comfort with more heating and cooling and a quieter operation, and often features higher quality components that result in longer equipment life. “According to Energy Star, up to 70 percent of a home’s energy use can be attributed to heating, cooling and appliances. So whether it’s investing in a new ENERGY STAR-certified appliance or exploring HVAC options, the better we’re able to manage energy in our homes the better we can manage our energy bills and other related costs,” stated Natasha Collins with Louisville Gas and Electric Company. Get Your Home
In Shape For Summer
The fitness levels of many of us tend to wane during the fall and winter seasons, and then a renewed motivation comes each spring as we endeavor to get ourselves “beach ready.” Similarly, a home endures a variety of harsh elements during the winter months, and springtime is typically a great opportunity to get it back into shape. The spring maintenance to-do list can be quite long for some, but the good news is that many of the items on the list can be completed—or at least initiated—by the home owners themselves. The following are a handful of critical areas to assess as you prep for the warm weather ahead.
Consider hiring a professional to clean your ducts where dust and air-borne particles are likely to build up. Spring is also the ideal time of year to inspect your fireplace and chimney. Look around for visible cracks, nesting animals or other signs of damage. Use this opportunity to have a professional chimney sweep clean your chimney, check it thoroughly and make any necessary repairs.

Take a look at all of your windows and doors for drafts and air leaks. Caulk any seams and re-glaze windows if needed. It’s a good idea to clean all of your windows, inside and out, including
Tom Drexler, of Tom Drexler Plumbing, Air & Electric, commented, “Multiple factors of your air conditioner are improved when annual maintenance occurs, like the efficiency

of your system, which can go on to save money on your energy bill during the hot season. In addition, the chance of avoiding an untimely breakdown improves because any major equipment issues will be detected prior to extreme weather. When your system undergoes annual maintenance, it keeps the system under the manufacturer’s warranty and plays a role in improving its lifespan. Lastly, you’ll have the peace-of-mind knowing the system is running safely.” Thus, spring is a great time to service your air conditioner! Don’t risk having it break down in the middle of a summer heat wave. A small amount of time spent cleaning the unit and nominal investment in professional maintenance now could save you days or weeks of suffering this summer. “Having your air conditioners tuned-up before peak cooling season is critical to make sure your system is working efficiently, reliably and safely,” said Nick Kramer with Prudential Heating and Air Conditioning Company. “Your HVAC system uses roughly 50% of your home’s energy, so proper maintenance is a great way to ensure you are getting the most efficient operation possible. It also helps prevent any potential costly breakdowns,” he went on to say. WATER DAMAGE
Inspect the outside of your house to ensure proper drainage. Some key areas to examine include overhangs, awnings and exposed siding where snow and water tend to collect and cause
materials to decay over time. If possible, venture outside during the next rainfall and observe how the rain rolls off your roof and down your gutters. The water should empty a good distance away from your foundation so that it doesn’t seep into your basement. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear of debris and in good working order will help eliminate water from pooling close to the house, which will not only cause damage but also attract insects like termites. Repairing leaky plumbing in and around crawl spaces, and properly ventilating those areas will help keep them dry and much less hospitable to insects. GENERAL SAFETY Check the condition of stair railings, steps and sidewalks around your home. Tighten any loose connections and smooth out cracks or ridges in the walkways. If your steps have settled or shifted, consult a professional to have them repaired. Focusing on these small jobs now will save you time and money in the very near future. They’ll also give you added peace of mind so that you can enjoy a safer, cooler and healthier summer.
