PRESIDENT'S REPORT Well, where to begin with this year of achievements and firsts! It has been a massive year for our Industry as we continue to work towards promoting best practice within the Concrete Pumping Industry. Conducting Expo 2018 at Olympic Park in Sydney was a huge success with over 700 people attending the day, our 4 years of working with Standards Australia to revise the 25-year-old Concrete Pumping Standard culminated in republish AS2550.15:2019, conducting complete overhaul of the Associations Logbooks and Safety related publications and launch of the ‘first ever’ industry developed eLogbook which provides ‘cloud’ storage and access to time critical safety data for your fleet. Fully funded by the Association, members were invited to participate in the first ever Financial Benchmarking Study for our industry. Results have been published and members can learn how they compare with industry benchmarks. Let me highlight a couple of the projects ‘your’ Association has delivered through ‘your’ support. The Australian Standard for the safe use of Concrete Placing Equipment was republished in January 2019, with the previous AS2550.15 last reviewed in 1994, over 25 YEARS ago! The journey started 3 years ago, tasked to revise the Standard and make the necessary changes to meet the changing industry needs, modern equipment and its operators’ skills. The Committee, made up of Industry bodies, Regulators, Manufacturers and Users was formed and began working towards modernising and aligning safe operating methods for our Industry. After a long and arduous process, AS2550.15:2019 was approved in January this year and has been widely welcomed across the industry for the new pillar of safety and standards for the concrete pumping industry. From one stellar example of innovation to another; 2019 saw the Association launch the very first eLogBook for Concrete Pumpers! The eLogBook will be absolutely ground-breaking in our Industry, allowing quick and easy access to your pump records, and improving the efficiency of inspections on site, complying with AS2550.15 requirements. All safety checks are streamlined and are efficiently stored in your online database, with a simple one click button to send your reports to your administrator or manager.

2019 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

I encourage all our members & nonmembers to download the eLogBook and see for yourself just how impressive it is and how much time it could save you from sifting through your well-loved hardcopy logbook, which by the way we still sell! While we have been striving to progress our Industry through safety and education, the profitability of our businesses operating in concrete pumping play an important part in its success. This year the Association partnered with Profit Soup to facilitate the very FIRST Financial Benchmarking Study for Concrete Pumpers in Australia to provide insight into their own business and the Australian Construction Services Industry as a whole. The aim of the study was to measure the key indicators of financial health, and provide benchmarks for financial and operational efficiency, and help members identify areas for improvement through setting meaningful and achievable targets. The positive reviews were abundant, and we have immediately begun planning for our next one, with aims for bigger and better participation this time around. The Association believes that by understanding where your business stands in the industry you can understand how you can improve and our Financial Benchmarking Study did just that! As you can see, here at the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia we have been working tremendously hard to improve the concrete pumping industry, through both education and safety of our pumpers, as well as helping to educate our business on how best to succeed financially in our industry. We hope 2019 has been as good to you as it has been to the CPAA! Keep Pumping!

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

"WE MUST WORK TOWARDS THE FUTURE & CONTINUE OUR MISSION!"

- Craig Heidrich

2019 has been another great year for the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia, continued membership growth, delivery of training and education events to improve the professionalism of our industry and publication of the first major update of AS 2550.15 Concrete Pumping Standard in over 25 years! Other projects include the recently launched hard copy LogBook, new electronic eLogBook, and first ever Financial Benchmarking study. Your Association and Board has worked tirelessly delivering on this huge list of projects -- steering our concrete pumping industry in the direction of safety, education and innovation. However, we mustn’t rest our laurels! We must continue the momentum generated from these terrific outcomes and work towards the future and continue our mission! The Concrete Pumping Association of Australia continues to improve the standing of the industry by informing and educating members through the provision of valuable advice. As well as in 2019, the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia took a stand for the concrete pumping as a whole to Australian government and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes for members for sustainability of the industry, the safety of employees through education and progression through innovation. As we prepare for 2020 and beyond, we must understand that Industry Growth requires a long and consistent effort from many different contributors and we at the CPAA are committed to the cause.

8

2019 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

While we are extremely proud of our 2019 projects, we are now directing our attention towards the new year. We are now planning for our 2020 Certification courses (Shotcrete & Line Pumping). Certification is one of three ‘pillars’ on which the CPAA is built. These courses increase the knowledge of pumpers through the dissemination of current information and schooling on best practice. While also providing you and your business with an internationally recognised certification (ACI), ensuring that your business becomes recognised and qualified for the skilled work that you do and differentiates you from the competition in our industry. Another project taking up desk space at the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia is planning for the 2020 Expo. The Expo has been a biennial event, showcasing the CPAA Members and the 12,000 people employed within the Industry. The concrete pumping industry is made up of approximately 1,300 concrete pumping related businesses operating 8,000 pieces of concrete placing equipment around Australia and are responsible for providing time critical, dependable and safe concrete placing ability to both major and minor infrastructure. This industry has an operating invested capital of $3.5 billion to pump materials each year, contributing approximately $2 billion of revenue into the economy per year, and contributing $11.7 billion to GDP (market value of final product).

At the 2020 Expo, we are expecting to increase our participation on last year, with expectations of 800+ joining in on the biennial event, where some of the best in the industry will showcase their products and knowledge.

Membership involvement will yield dividends through generating new business contacts through your company affiliation.

Expect to see some of the following: • manufacturers • distributors • service providers and industry experts • concrete pump suppliers and repairers • educators • concrete pump certifiers and assessors • registered training organisations (RTO’s).

"INVESTING IN THE ASSOCIATION IS AN INVESTMENT BACK IN YOUR OWN INDUSTRY."

The Expo is expected to attract builders, construction contractors, representatives from Federal and State Government departments, relevant regulators and key influencers and decisionmakers, making connections at the event. Industry growth will come from building and maintaining relationships with these interested parties and that can only be good for our Industry.

CPAA Membership offers your business with an opportunity to have a voice in shaping the future of the concrete pumping industry. Now is the time to get involved in YOUR industry. I hope you enjoy this edition of our Concrete Pumper’s Magazine! Stay safe and happy pumping!

These planned projects are a representation of the intense effort being made by all those involved with the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia. We are constantly looking at new ways to benefit our Members, but we need engagement from you to gain a better understanding of how we can grow as your Association. Change comes from action. If you are passionate about your industry and want to make a change, then get involved with the CPAA and join in on the conversation! Give you and your business a voice!

SELECTING A NEW DELIVERY HOSE The money saved buying a cheap delivery hose will be nothing compared to the costs you are certain to incur, if you choose unwisely. Just like car and truck tyres, in rubber hose you basically get what you pay for. If it’s good performance and long life that you want, the cheapest definitely won’t be the best, because the raw materials and production costs are much higher for the technically superior hoses. Concrete pumping places huge demands on rubber hose, which must be specially designed for concrete pumping to withstand the high pressures combined with severe internal and external abrasion. Basically, two main groups of hose are used:

Fabric or Textile Reinforced Delivery Hose This uses multiple plies of synthetic cord for reinforcement. To withstand the pressure, many more layers of reinforcing are required, which makes the hose stiffer and more bulky.

Steel Reinforced Delivery Hose This uses cords of high tensile steel to create an extremely flexible hose that is both kink and crush resistant, capable of much tighter radius bends and much higher working pressures than fabric hose. Usually it comes in 2-Ply for use at the point of placement and 4-Ply for tough or extreme situations.

12

2019 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

HOW TO COMPARE HOSES Hoses are manufactured for specific applications, and using the proper hose for the proper application is paramount for safety on the concrete pumping site. Concrete hoses are designed and manufactured to stand up to the most abrasive applications and materials, from handling wet concrete with high head pressures to navigating the critical flex areas of a concrete boom truck. Outer Cover Thickness, Abrasion Resistance, Quality of the wrapping (look for unevenness, high and low spots and poor bonding of the wrap). Remember many hoses wear out on the outside quicker than inside.

Reinforcement Material Type – Steel or Fabric, Number of Plies, Thickness and evenness of the Reinforcement Layer.

Flexibility Use a large enough sample to bend it tightly to see how easily it kinks. Consider how much energy you need to bend it compared to other hose. Try to squash it.

Pressure Rating Find out the Burst Pressure (BP) and then calculate the Maximum Working Pressure (MWP) yourself. If you just look at MWP you will find various manufacturers use different Safety Factors (SF) such as 1.75:1, 2:1, 2.5:1, 3:1 and 4:1. For example, a 40 bar WP hose with a SF of 3:1 has a BP of 120 bar. So does a 30 bar WP hose with a SF of 4:1, which means the two hoses have absolutely identical pressure capabilities, yet it did not read that way if you only looked at WP without checking the SF or BP.

Inner Tube Thickness, Abrasion Resistance, Smoothness of the bore. Is it hard or soft when dented by your fingernail?

Dimensions Compare the actual size of the hose i.d. and o.d. to what you have used before. Some hose can be too bulky and is made this way to achieve a certain pressure rating. This greatly decreases flexibility. Also check the hose i.d. matches your pipes and fittings as any restrictions will cause blockages and wear.

Weight/Metre Important as someone will lift and drag it around, or in the case of manual spraying, hold it above his head.

Hose Tail & Coupling Method Before buying a new hose look carefully at the way it is coupled. Today, most hoses have crimped ends, much like a hydraulic hose. This crimp must withstand the full pressure without blowing out when the hose blocks. Equally important is there is no step inside the hose where the hose tail ends. A small step of maximum 0.5 mm is acceptable, however anything more will be an ongoing source of unnecessary blockages if the concrete is slightly on the boney side. Look for a hose tail that is case hardened and thick in the stem area where all the wear occurs. Hoses that are internally skived before crimping last much longer because a much thicker-wall hose tail can be inserted. These are available from 50 mm i.d. and up.

AS 2550.15:2019 CRANES, HOISTS & WINCHES SAFE USE PART 15: CONCRETE PLACING EQUIPMENT It's official ... the 25+ year old AS 2550.15 has been republished following an extensive review, updating and contemporising for today's modern concrete placing equipment. AS 2550.15 was prepared by the Committee ME-091, Concrete Placing Equipment, to supersede AS 2550.15: 1994 Cranes—Safe use, Part 15: Concrete placing equipment. The objective of this Standard is to specify the requirements that apply to concrete placing equipment, which are not cranes used for lifting, but share some common structural, mechanical and electrical elements of cranes. The AS 2550 series of Standards provides national uniform requirements and guidance for the safe use of cranes, hoists and winches, some of which are relevant to concrete placing equipment. This revision of AS 2550.15 resulted in a comprehensive update of the standard requirements, including the addition of contemporary methods and techniques to ensure concrete placing equipment safe use. In early February 2019, the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia held a Member's Briefing Webinar to explain changes to the Standard and how these changes will be implemented over 2019. The Webinar was recorded and is available at www.cpassoc.com.au.

CALCULATING CONCRETE PRESSURE FROM HYDRAULIC PRESSURE Do you know how much actual concrete or line pressure your pump creates when it blocks? Well, you should know – for safety’s sake... Otherwise, how can you tell if the couplings, pipe thickness or hose you use are safe to use with your machine? Here’s the way to work it out. It’s not complicated, just work your way through it. First step, you must know the maximum hydraulic pressure the main hydraulic pump creates when the pump blocks – note it next time you get a blockage! Second step is to calculate the hydraulic ratio. This is the difference in size (or ratio) between the hydraulic piston and the concrete piston faces. This ratio is the amount, the hydraulic pressure is stepped down, due to the difference in area of the hydraulic piston to the concrete piston. The easy way is to ask the concrete pump manufacturer for this ratio or, otherwise calculate it yourself as follows: a) Note which side the hydraulic pressure first enters the main drive rams. Is it rod side as in fig.1, where the pressurised hydraulic oil pushes against an annular or donut shaped area due to the area taken by the hydraulic rod? Or is it full or piston side as in fig.2, where the oil pushes against the full hydraulic piston face? b) Now to the calculations – work out the surface area of the concrete piston face (A3) (square mm, cm or inches is fine, but use the same units for both calculations). c) Work out the surface area of the hydraulic piston (A1). If your pump is connected rod side, you will have to also work out the area where the rod contacts the piston (A2) and deduct this from the overall area, which gives you the area of the annulus. This reduced area (AH) is the one you require as it is this area that the high pressure oil pushes against. d) The hydraulic ratio is found by dividing the area of the concrete piston face (A3) by the area of the hydraulic piston face that receives the high pressure oil from the hydraulic pump (AH or A1). Third Step, the concrete or line pressure is found by dividing the hydraulic gauge pressure from your main hydraulic pump by the hydraulic ratio you have calculated. Once you know this ratio, you can immediately calculate what actual line pressure you are pumping at.

NOTE: Formula for area of a circle is: Area = π r 2 (or 3.14 x r 2)

Hydraulic cylinder internal diameter Hydraulic rod Concrete cylinder diameter Hydraulic pressure when blocked

3½" = 90mm 2" = 50mm 8" = 200mm 3000psi = 206bar

A1 = (45 x 45) 3.14 = 6358mm2 A2 = (25 x 25) 3.14 = 1962mm2 A1 - A2 = 6358 - 1962 = 4396mm2 = area of hydraulic piston AH A3 = (100 x 100) 3.14 = 31,400mm2 To find hydraulic ration (R) divide concrete piston area A3 by hydraulic piston area AH R=

A3 31,400 = = 7.1 : 1 AH 4,396

To find maximum concrete or line pressure divide the hydraulic gauge pressure by the hydraulic ratio 3000psi / 7.1 = 422psi 206bar / 7.1 = 29bar

Hydraulic cylinder internal diameter Hydraulic rod Concrete cylinder diameter Hydraulic pressure when blocked (system relief pressure)

3½" = 90mm not relevant 8" = 200mm 3000psi = 206bar

A1 = (45 x 45) 3.14 = 6358mm2 A3 = (100 x 100) 3.14 = 31,400mm2 R=

A3 31,400 = = 4.9 : 1 A1 6358

To find maximum concrete or line pressure divide the hydraulic gauge pressure by the hydraulic ratio 3000psi / 4.9 = 612psi 206bar / 4.9 = 42.2bar

Conclusions 01. The hydraulic ratio will differ when connected rod side or full side 02. The hydraulic gauge cannot tell you the pipeline pressure without you first knowing the hydraulic ratio 03. The lower the hydraulic ration, the greater the line pressure 04. If you still don't understand any of this, contact your concrete pump manufacturer - As an operator you really don't need to understand this, for safety's sake, pump on!

NSW BIGGEST POUR Work was in full swing on building a new interchange at the intersection of The Northern Road and Bringelly Road at Bringelly, with the biggest concrete pour in NSW Roads history kicking off on January 11th. Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the work — being delivered as part of the Australian and New South Wales government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan — would enable motorists and bus and truck drivers to travel through the area more quickly and safely.

Pavey says the use of local concrete manufacturers and suppliers is a great achievement, “as it is one of the largest and most continuous concrete pours Roads and Maritime Services has undertaken”.

,,

“When The Northern Road and Bringelly Road upgrades are completed, motorists will enjoy improved connections between Penrith, the M4 Motorway, the Western Sydney Airport site and surrounding developments,” says Stuart Ayres, New South Wales Minister for Western Sydney.

As part of these projects, work is now underway on building a new interchange 350 metres west of the busy intersection of The Northern Road, Bringelly Road and Greendale Road which will provide an underpass to improve travel times and ease congestion for road users,” Mr Tudge said.

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, said building the interchange was not an easy task, with crews pouring 2,600 cubic metres of concrete over two days to get the new bridge deck just right. Topline Concrete Pumping were the concrete pumping contractor for the project, with nine pumpers pouring continuously for around 24 hours.

20

2019 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

Around 15,000 vehicles use The Northern Road daily, with this statistic expected to increase as Western Sydney grows.

Over 40 engineers planned for about 100 workers to carry out the continuous concrete pour. The community was invited to watch the continuous concrete pour from a viewing platform, and that they did with over 100 spectators making it out to watch the biggest concrete pour in NSW Roads history. The Northern Road and Bringelly Road interchange is expected to open to traffic in 2020. For more information about the upgrades and to keep up to date, visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au.

CPAA eLOGBOOK It’s no secret the world has fast become technology focused and the most efficient and successful businesses have embraced this change. We wanted to give our members the opportunity to utilise technology to benefit their businesses and the industry as a whole. We identified the Logbook and Safety Check as a terrific starting point. It’s an everyday process that many find tedious, so we knew a bit of tweaking and improving would go a long way in both efficiency and safety for everyone. We know not all small businesses have the means or priorities to invest in such a project for themselves, but the privilege of being an Association driven by the needs of our members, is that we can invest in a such a project to give every small business a go. The main function of the eLogBook is that it covers all the safety checks and functions of that of our physical Logbook that all concrete pumpers would be familiar with. The benefit of the eLogBook over the physical Logbook however, is that it is accessible from any of your devices, it cannot be damaged or lost, you don’t need to scramble to find that missing pen and it’s simply faster to fill out and keep record of. In fact, you can enter every past Logbook record into the eLogBook and not worry about storing them all away.

Pump hours are automatically calculated and recorded. There are regular Periodic Inspections alerts that allow you to stay up to date, as well as repairs that need to be attended to. We have added some graphs to help visualise your trucks performance and use. Users are able to make their own custom tasks and logs so relevant employees in the business are constantly informed. Photos taken through the eLogBook are automatically stored and categorised. You can upload invoices and reports to keep further history and logs on trucks. Our goal is to see businesses taking full advantage of the eLogBook. We greatly value any and all feedback. This project was designed for our members and we want YOU to have a say in how we make the eLogBook even better!

TECH TIPS: KNOW YOUR CONVERSIONS As concrete pumps and their accessories are manufactured throughout the world, different specifications are often shown to those we are used to working with. Therefore, we should be able to convert these back to something we know. You may find the following of use: Pressure Power

1bar = 100kPa = 14.5psi

1Mpa=10bar=145psi

1KW = 1.34102HP

10psi = 68.895kPa 1HP = 0.746kW

Torque

1lb/ft = 0.671969kg/m

Weight

To convert lbs. per foot to kg per metre divide by 0.671969

Machine Cockpit Machine Cockpit is an important step forward for Putzmeister in their commitment to a digital future. They are focused on making the transition to a digital future easy for Putzmeister users, by developing simple and easy to operate tools that allow users to work more economically, efficiently and safely with their concrete pumps. Putzmeister Machine Cockpit is an information hub, that allows truck-mounted concrete pumps to be fully networked, enabling real time information to be accessed from anywhere, at any time. This includes information on the status of pumps at the jobsite, critical alerts, remote diagnosis to identify faults and implement appropriate measures, key figures for delivery rate, machine use and fuel consumption, alerts and tracking when machines are on the move and reminders for maintenance. The result? Less downtime, increased productivity and increased safety. It also enables highly efficient fleet management, as companies are able to have a complete overview of their fleet at all times and analyse data to reduce unproductive times, wear and fuel consumption across their fleet. The best news? Customers who buy a new machine equipped with Ergonic® 2.0 will receive these benefits as standard, AND older machines can also be retrofitted.

In March 2019, a truck mounted concrete pump with boom (TMCPWB) collapsed on to an operator. The injured person had his leg pinned by the boom, causing leg injuries. Possible contributing factors include:

Ground under the TMCPWB insufficiently compacted.

Underground services not identified.

Pressure on pipes may cause soil subsidence.

Insufficient operator training or experience.

Insufficient operator attention to the TMCPWB set up.

Outriggers may not be correctly set up.

Incorrect placement of outriggers.

All employers have a responsibility to provide a high standard of safety and health at workplaces. Many workplaces have hazards that place workers at risk of injury or harm to health. Following the risk management process outlined, can help create a safe and healthy workplace. 1. Ensure a safe work method statement (SWMS) is in place for high risk construction work, including work on a construction site where there is movement of powered mobile plant. 2. The SWMS must be customised to include site specific hazards and controls. • Include the identification of all underground services. 3. Ensure the ground underneath the TMCPWB has been assessed as suitable to support the TMCPWB's weight. 4. Set up the TMCPWB in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. • If manufacturer’s instructions are unavailable, set up in accordance with Australian Standards AS 2550 and AS 1418. 5. Ensure the TMCPWB operator is adequately trained. • The applicable High Risk Work Licence is a minimum requirement, and further specific training may be required. 6. Operators should be fit to work and attentive to the job.

LINE PUMP TRAINING COURSE REVIEW OF LINE PUMP COURSE | MAY 7TH

In early May, the CPAA Hosted the 3rd Line Pump Training Course for Aussie Pumpers, to get formal training, upskill to the best industry practices and get hands on experience. The training was conducted in a class and around a pump from one of Australia’s best Trainer/Assessors, Neville Barnes of Kanefall. All of the 14 attendees passed the course and received their Certificate, along with a bag of merchandise, workbooks and material from the day. The event which was hosted by W Win Engineering, in Milperra. The CPAA would like to thank John Win, Rob and his team for their support with the Course and their ongoing support of the Association.

,,

The thoroughness and detailed manner in which Neville is able to pass on his wealth of hands on experience is amazing. I witnessed his responses to candid discussions and questions with complete certainty which only comes from living in those moments. I have no doubt that the group on the day would feel the same. From what I experienced, the content was relevant and detailed. I strongly believe this type of Industry Relative Training is a must for anyone working on or around plant and machinery, only good things can come from investing in your crew in this way. I would encourage today’s and tomorrow’s pumpies to embrace the notion of being a member of the CPAA. The benefits far outweigh the costs.”
