Biography for State Senator Jim Ananich DISTRICT State Senator Jim Ananich was elected Senate Democratic Leader by his peers following his reelection to the Senate in 2018. He is serving his second full term in the State Senate after he won a special election in 2013 to fill the vacant 27th District seat. He proudly represents the people of Burton, Clio, Flint, Flint Township, Forest Township, Genesee Township, Mount Morris, Mount Morris Township, Richfield Township, Swartz Creek, Thetford Township, and Vienna Township. PROFESSIONAL Before coming to the Senate, Ananich served Genesee County for two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. He also previously spent four years on the Flint City Council, including one year as its president. While on the city council, he voted to cut his own pay by 15 percent and refused to take any council perks. Since being elected to the State House, he has continued his push for reforms, voting to end lifetime benefits for politicians and finding savings for taxpayers in his own office budget. A former teacher at Carmen-Ainsworth and Flint Community Schools, Ananich also worked as an education coordinator for Priority Children, helping train Genesee County youth to secure internships and jobs. During his time in the state Legislature, Jim has fought against cuts to school funding and tax hikes on middle class families. He also led efforts to help create jobs, improve workforce development and prevent scrap metal theft. His bill to help keep unused prescription drugs off the streets was signed into law at the end of 2012. Ananich has been at the forefront of addressing the Flint Water Crisis. He continues to push for answers as a member of the bicameral, bipartisan panel investigating the crisis, as well as championing long-term solutions to the critical infrastructure, health, and economic needs now facing the community. EDUCATION Ananich graduated from Flint Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political economics from Michigan State University, as well as a secondary education certificate in social studies. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Michigan-Flint.

PERSONAL Jim lives in Flint with his wife and son, Andrea and Jacob, as well as their dog, Maddie. Andrea is a high school social studies teacher and is involved in the League of Women Voters, Habitat for Humanity and several other local groups. Biography for State Senator John Bizon DISTRICT State Senator John Bizon is now serving in his first term as Senator of the 19 th Senate District, encompassing Barry, Calhoun and Ionia counties. Prior to serving in the Senate, he served in the House of Representatives serving the 62nd District. PROFESSIONAL Bizon is an ear, nose and throat-otolaryngologist in Battle Creek who’s been in medical practice for almost 40 years. EDUCATION Dr. Bizon earned a bachelor of science from Michigan State University and a medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. His residency took place at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Texas. PUBLIC OFFICES AND AFFILIATIONS Bizon is a military veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, eventually obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. John also is a longtime volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, past president of the Calhoun County Medical Society, and served as longstanding chair of the legislative committee at the county medical society and on the Battle Creek Health System (now Bronson Battle Creek) medical staff, where he held several medical staff leadership and quality improvement positions. He has also served the Michigan State Medical Society in several capacities, culminating in service as president. PERSONAL John and his wife Deborah have been married for 45 years and together have four adult children and five grandchildren. John and Deborah have belonged to the Catholic Church community since childhood, including the Battle Creek St. Philip and St. Joseph churches over the past 24 years.

Biography for State Senator Winnie Brinks DISTRICT Sen. Winnie Brinks is the first woman to represent Grand Rapids in the Michigan Senate since Eva McCall Hamilton was elected in 1920. Her district in Kent County includes: Ada Township, Bowne Township, Caledonia Township, Cascade Township, East Grand Rapids city, Grand Rapids city, Grand Rapids Township, Lowell city, and Lowell Township PROFESSIONAL Before her election to the Michigan House of Representatives, Brinks was a caseworker at The Source. There, she helped businesses and nonprofits improve workplaces to grow and retain employees. She also previously served as the executive director of a community-based corrections agency and as a school paraprofessional. Brinks is dedicated to keeping the Grand Rapids and West Michigan an economic leader in the state. In the state House, Brinks worked tirelessly to protect our drinking water from toxic PFAS contamination, create jobs, ensure every child has access to a world-class education and honor our state’s debt to our veterans. EDUCATION Brinks is a graduate of Calvin College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a concentration in sociology. PERSONAL Winnie and her husband Steve, a Spanish teacher, live in Grand Rapids and are the parents of three incredible daughters, Olivia, Annalise and Emma. She attends Sherman Street Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids.

Chang was the Minority Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Law and Justice and served on the House Committees on Education Reform and Natural Resources. PROFESSIONAL Before serving in the Legislature, Chang worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade. She served as the state director for NextGen Climate Michigan, the alumni engagement and evaluation coordinator for the Center for Progressive Leadership in Michigan, the community engagement coordinator for the James and Grace Lee Boggs School, the deputy director for the Campaign for Justice, an organizer for Michigan United/One United Michigan and as an assistant to Grace Lee Boggs. She is a co-founder and past president of Asian and Pacific Islander American VoteMichigan and served as a mentor with the Detroit Asian Youth Project. EDUCATION Chang is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degrees in public policy and in social work. PERSONAL Chang was raised in Canton and is the daughter of parents who emigrated from Taiwan to pursue greater opportunities. Chang and her husband, Sean Gray, live in Detroit and are the parents of a young daughter.

Biography for State Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr. DISTRICT Curtis Hertel Jr. was elected to the Senate in 2014 to represent the 23rd District, which serves Ingham County. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Curtis served as Ingham County Register of Deeds since 2009, working hard to inform the public about the dangers of property and mortgage fraud. He continues to battle the foreclosure crisis by educating residents about their options, and the types of government help available to them. PROFESSIONAL In 2011, when banks began to conduct foreclosure fraud, he began his fight on behalf of Ingham County residents illegally forced out of their homes. Curtis has a number of lawsuits pending against banks, foreclosure firms & attorneys to bring this issue further into the light. Additionally, because of his efforts, an attorney has been hired to fight individual cases of wrongful foreclosure in Ingham County, with a hotline where citizens could get more information was introduced. He also held 12 community forums across the county to further educate the public about the issue. Previously, he served as an Ingham County Commissioner from 2001-2008. On the Commission, Curtis focused on expanding access to health care in the community through the Ingham Health Plan, improving the quality of Ingham County’s housing stock through his work on the Ingham County Land Bank Authority, and improving the lives of workers in the community by passing the living wage. While a commissioner, he also served as Vice-chair of the Board of Human Services Committee. Curtis served as Constituent Relations Director for the House Democratic Caucus. For 6 years Curtis Hertel Jr. worked for the Department of Community Health. He also served as the Department’s Legislative Liaison. In his role with the department Curtis was the lead on several packages of legislation including the Governor’s Childhood lead safety package, the Nursing Home background check package, and the Childhood Booster Seat package. Biography for State Senator Ruth Johnson DISTRICT State Senator Ruth Johnson was elected to the Michigan State Senate to represent District 14. Johnson won the general election on November 6, 2018, after advancing from the primary on August 7, 2018. Johnson was elected as Michigan Secretary of State in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014. She was prevented from seeking re-election in 2018 due to term limits. PROFESSIONAL Senator Johnson has lived in Northern Oakland County, Michigan all her life. She is a former small business owner. From 1988-1998, she served as a Commissioner of Oakland County. Biography for State Senator Pete Lucido DISTRICT 8 Senator Peter J. Lucido was elected to serve as a Senator for the 8 th Senate District in November 2018. The 8th district encompasses Mt. Clemens, St. Clair Shores, Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, Bruce Twp., Chesterfield Twp., Harrison Twp., Lenox Twp., Ray Twp., Shelby Twp., Washington Twp., New Haven, and Romeo in Macomb County. PROFESSIONAL Lucido was the founder, president and managing partner of one of Macomb County’s largest law firms. He was also the founder and publisher of Macomb Now Magazine, and is currently the publisher emeritus. Additionally, Lucido is a licensed attorney, insurance agent, realtor and former security register representative. EDUCATION Lucido earned an associate degree from Macomb Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Business from Oakland University, a master’s in Business from Central Michigan University and a Juris Doctor from Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University School of Law). Biography for State Senator Peter MacGregor DISTRICT Peter MacGregor was first elected to the Michigan Senate in November 2014 and assumed office in January 2015. He is a member of the Banking and Financial Services and Commerce committees, and is the vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He serves as the Chairman of the Human Services Appropriations subcommittee. PROFESSIONAL Prior to joining the Senate, Peter served four years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 73rd district. Peter also served as a Cannon Township Planning Commissioner, Township Trustee and Township Supervisor. In addition to his official public service, Senator MacGregor is also an active member of his community. He has been a volunteer youth coach for various sports. He is a member of the Rockford Lions – serving as the club’s President from 2007-2008. Peter is also one of the founding chairmen of “Volley for Mitchell” – a charity volleyball tournament to raise funds for Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy – raising over $100,000 for the cause, to date. EDUCATION Peter MacGregor is a former small business owner and lifelong Michigan resident. He graduated from Michigan State University, Eli Broad College of Business. PERSONAL He is married to his college sweetheart, Christine. Together they have three children.

Biography for State Senator Aric Nesbitt DISTRICT Senator Nesbitt represents the 26th State Senate District, which includes all of Allegan & Van Buren Counties, along with Gaines Township & the City of Kentwood. EDUCATION Senator Nesbitt graduated from Hillsdale College and earned his master's degree in International Business. PROFESSIONAL His professional experience includes working as a computer technician, farmer and financial planner. He also served Congressmen Tim Walberg (R) and Tim Murphy (R) as Legislative Director and Senior Advisor, respectively. In 2010, Nesbitt was elected to represent Van Buren County and part of Allegan County in the Michigan House of Representatives. He served three terms in the state House, achieving results for hardworking taxpayers by balancing budgets and reducing debt, lowering the tax burden, eliminating thousands of regulations, and defending our West Michigan values. Nesbitt served as the House Majority Floor Leader and chair of the House Committee on Energy and Technology. He also served as a member of Gov. Rick Snyder’s cabinet, managing an agency that generates nearly $1 billion annually for public education. PERSONAL Senator Nesbitt is a member of the Republican Party and resides south of Lawton, Michigan with his wife, Trisha.

Biography for State Senator Mike Shirkey COMMITTEES Senator Mike Shirkey serves as chair of the Senate Health Policy and Michigan Competitiveness committees, and is a member of the Elections and Government Reform and Energy and Technology committees. He also serves as the vice-chair for the Appropriations subcommittee for Community Health. EDUCATION Mike Shirkey earned a bachelor’s degree from General Motors Institute (GMI) in 1978 and a master of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1979. PROFESSIONAL Mike is the founder and owner of Orbitform, a leading engineering company that manufactures forming, fastening, joining and assembly equipment for a wide range of industries and applications. The company provides world-class prototype engineering services for assembly of parts and specialized forming and fastening. Mike also worked for General Motors in various management and engineering roles for 13 years. PAST PUBLIC OFFICES AND AFFILIATIONS Mike served on the Columbia Central School Board in the 1980s and ’90s. Shirkey also is the past board chair of Allegiance Health System. PERSONAL Mike is the proud father of three and devoted husband of 39 years to Sue. Mike and Sue also have several grandchildren. He is an active member of the Jackson Free Methodist Church, and leads major construction/expansion projects. Mike also enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and working out. He is also an avid woodworker in “grandpa’s workshop.”

Biography for State Senator Jim Stamas DISTRICT State Senator Jim Stamas was elected to his first term in the Michigan Senate in November 2014, representing Alcona, Alpena, Arenac, Gladwin, Iosco, Midland, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego and Presque Isle counties. EDUCATION Stamas holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University and an associate’s degree in business management from Delta College. PROFESSIONAL Stamas is the owner and former general manager of Pizza Sam’s, the eatery in Midland the Stamas family has owned for more than 50 years. Prior to running the family business, Stamas was self-employed as a realtor and was project manager at Case Systems. Before serving in the Senate, Stamas served three terms as State Representative and two terms as Midland County commissioner. He also was a Midland Township trustee from 1997-2004 and has served on the boards of the Midland Downtown Development Authority, Midland Downtown Business Association and Midland County Planning Commission. Stamas served his country honorably in both the U.S. Army and the Michigan National Guard. As a member of the Michigan House of Representative, in recognition of Jim’s effectiveness and leadership, his colleagues elected him Majority Floor Leader for the 96th and 97th Legislatures. Biography for State Senator Curt VanderWall EDUCATION Sentor VanderWall completed courses at Grand Rapids Junior College for two years before moving on to the workforce. Biography for State Representative Lee Chatfield DISTRICT Speaker Chatfield is the youngest Speaker in Michigan history in more than 100 years, and currently the youngest serving in the country. He was first elected to serve the 107th District in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. Biography for State Representative Hank Vaupel DISTRICT State Rep. Hank Vaupel was elected to his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. He represents the people of Livingston County, including the village of Fowlerville, townships of Conway, Cohoctah, Deerfield, Hartland, Howell, Handy, Iosco, Unadilla, Oceola, Marion, and Tyrone; the city of Howell and part of the city of Fenton. PROFESSIONAL In 1972, Hank returned home to Livingston County and independently started his veterinary practice, Kern Road Veterinary Clinic, P.C., which now includes eight veterinarians and provides equine and small animal veterinary service to most of southeast and central Michigan. Biography for State Representative Jason Wentworth DISTRICT State Rep. Jason Wentworth was first elected in November 2016 to the Michigan House to represent the residents of Clare, Gladwin, Arenac and part of Osceola County including Evart city and the townships of Evart, Hersey, Highland, Marion, Middle Branch, Orient, Osceola, Sherman and Sylvan. EDUCATION Wentworth graduated from Farwell High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Safety from St. Petersburg College in Florida and his master’s degree in Leadership from Central Michigan University. PROFESSIONAL Wentworth joined the United States Army after graduating high school in 2001. He spent five years as a military police officer and completed a tour in South Korea. After his military service, Wentworth worked in law enforcement in both the private and public sector. Prior to being elected, he was the East Central Michigan Regional Coordinator for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. PERSONAL Married for 13 years, Wentworth and his wife have three daughters and live in Clare. They attend Brown Corners Church.
