ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF NEW LOCATION PATRIOT GUARD RIDER INSIDE

Because of expected muddy conditions, the Leakey Regional Wastewater Project Groundbreaking Ceremony is going inside, thanks to the courtesy of Dr. Barbara Skipper, Superintendent of the Leakey Independent School District. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CEREMONY HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE NEW CAFETORIUM AT THE LEAKEY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT CAMPUS LOCATED AT 429 N. HWY. 83 IN LEAKEY. A location map is attached. The ceremony, still, is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016.

A fatal accident on Friday April 15th, 2016 at approximately 2:45 p.m. north of Leakey claimed the life of John Richard Cunningham. Cunningham was from Katy, Texas and died on scene. The 61 year old was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle south on Hwy 83 north of Leakey at the intersection of RR 336 when he made a U-turn reportedly having missed the turn to the popular “Sisters” ride that includes RR336, RR335 and RR337. Cunning-

ham was struck by a 2012 Freightliner traveling south, killing him instantly. The 18 wheeler sustained only slight damage to the right front. The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries. Leakey Eagles Headed to State On Monday and Tuesday, April 11th and 12th, 2016, Leakey Eagle and Lady Eagle Golf teams played in the regional tournament in Manor, Texas at the Shadow Glen Golf Club, which according to golf coach Brian Leiker is “an extremely difficult course to play.” Both teams won the 2nd place position, which earned them the opportunity to compete at the state level against the twelve best 1A teams. The Lady Eagles team consists of Alexis Webb (Sr), Heidi

Dugat (Jr), Maycee Webb (Jr), Kendall Thompson (Jr), Brianna Webb (Fr), and alternate Hanna Jones (Fr). The Leakey Eagles team members are Jake Gray (Jr), Quinten Pigg (Jr), Anthony Chavez (Jr), Haden Hart (Sph), Damian Gonzalez (Sph), and Trey Bates (Fr). These two teams will compete in the 2016 Texas State 1A Golf Tournament in Austin at the Lions Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27th and 28th. The Nueces Canyon Panthers Varsity Boys Track Team defeated all seven other district foes to be crowned District 31 Champions. The track meet was held in Camp Wood on Thursday, April 14, 2016. The team acquired 169 points along the way to a well-deserved first place finish. The following is a list of award winner’s events and places. Sergeant Hernandez were the officers on scene, assisted by Real County Sheriff Bruce Carr and Deputies Castro and Douthit. Traffic on Hwy 83 was stopped for approximately one hour while the scene was cleared.

The Leakey Eagles will be competing against teams from Happy, Matador Motley County, McLean, Wink, Robert Lee, Garden City, Throckmorton, Blanket, Iredell, Douglas, and Chester. This is the second year in a row that both Leakey boys and girls teams headed to the state tournament.

Their coach, Brian Leiker stated, “ Both teams have played well, but we still have room for improvement.” The teams will be departing from Leakey ISD early Tuesday morning, so there will be a send-off pep rally on Monday, April 25th, in the new Leakey Gymnasium beginning at 3:00. Please come out support these outstanding athletes as they make Leakey proud for the second year in a row.
