Miss MiMi testiies in favor of HB 3460 (locally known as Miss MiMi’s law) At the State Capitol Tuesday (April 14th), MiMi Hardwick testiied before the House Committee of Business and Industry in support of HB 3460. She was accompanied on the trip to Austin by Jack and Terri DuBose (who also testiied). Our Representative for District 53, Andrew Murr, authored this bill, which protects property owner’s First Amendment Rights to display patriotic, historic lags of Texas (such as the “Come and Take it Flag”) in Homeowner’s Associations. HB 3460 amends the 82nd Legislatures property code to further rein-in over-reaching, out-of-control HOA Boards from usurping member’s inalienable rights. Having been ined 200 for lying her “Come and Take it” lag, Miss MiMi said in her testimony: “The fortunate citizens of Texas show honor to those “Warriors for Freedom” by lying the lags they displayed, carried and fought for. Those same lags remind us to display thanks for how fortunate we are to enjoy living here in freedom … Being a daughter of this, the grandest state in the United States of America, gives me and us a heavy responsibility to show the world how to appreciate and attend great honor to our forefathers, our foundation, and our lags.” HB 3460 received registered support from a number of individuals and organizations. If this passes the House, it will then go on to Senate Hearings. Your support and especially thanks to Representative Murr would be greatly appreciated.

Two Leakey ISD Students Participate in Lions District 2-A2 Youth Scholarship Contest by Fred R. McNiel, Youth Scholarship Chairman

The Leakey Lions Club is pleased to announce that Jacy Gray and Chase Reagor, both students at Leakey ISD, participated in the Lions International Youth Scholarship competition that was held in Kerrville on Friday afternoon, April 10th! Jacy Gray, daughter of Shawn and Steve Gray, a senior, and soon to be valedictorian of her graduating class at Leakey ISD, placed second in the Outstanding Youth Contest and was awarded a $500 scholarship to the college or university of her choosing. Jacy has already been accepted to Texas A&M in College Station where she will study petroleum engineering this fall! Chase Reagor, son of Charlie and Annisa Reagor and a junior at Leakey ISD participated in the Diabetes Essay Contest. While Chase did not place in the district competition in Kerrville he nevertheless was well prepared and read an outstanding essay! Chase did win first place in our local essay contest and as a result was eligible to advance to the district completion. Both Jacy and Chase will receive $250 in prize money awarded by our local Leakey Lions Club! Earlier his spring I delivered the contest applications to Leakey ISD counselor, Pat Sewell and explained what scholarship money was available for students who choose to participate in the Youth Scholarship Competition. Leakey ISD art and English teacher, Joan

McCarson asked her Honors English students to write diabetic essays. Chase Reagor’s essay was identified by Mrs. McCarson as the top essay in her honors English class. Alexis Webb and Deborah Odom both wrote excellent essays and placed second and third in the local competition. I accompanied these students to the competition in Kerrville that was held in conjunction with the annual Lions Club District 2-A2 Convention. District 2-A2 is comprised of more than forty Lions Clubs located in 21 counties in South Texas. We departed Leakey promptly at 11: 00 a.m. on Friday, April 10th, and after eating lunch at the La Fours Restaurant in Kerrville we arrived at the Inn of the Hills hotel where the conference was being held. The competition began at 1:00 p.m. and was concluded by 4: 00 p.m. Students from all across South Texas were present for the competition. The winners of the scholarships were announced at a social that more than two hundred guests attended that evening. After the social was over we returned to Leakey and arrived home about 9:30 p.m. The Leakey Lions Club is very proud of both of these young people and wants to take this opportunity to

Two World War II veterans from Leakey, Edith Smith and A. G. Hood, took Honor Flight #22 from Austin, Texas, to Washington D. C. leaving Austin at noon Friday, April 10, and arriving in Washington D.C. four hours later. There were 40 veterans in all taking the flight. Some, A. G. commented “were very handicapped.” They stayed at the Hilton Hotel, where they had dinner. All of the veterans were placed in wheelchairs and all had guardians, who took excellent care of them. Each veteran was given a cap and two shirts to wear during their visit and as a souvenir to take home. On Saturday, they were taken to the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Womens Memorial, and the Arlington National Cemetery. It was there that they witnessed the changing of the guard, and a lady in a red dress, A. G. observed, placed a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Edith counted the 21 steps taken by the guards each way. She recognized the symbol as a reminder of the 21 gun salute. Next up was the Marine Corp monument known as the Iwo Jima statue, the Air Force Memorial which consisted of three planes in

thank all of the students for their hard work in preparing for the youth contests! We also want to congratulate the parents of these students for rearing such outstanding young people! A big thanks to Mrs. McCarson for working so diligently and helping these students prepare for the contest. These students and their parents will be honored and recognized at a Leakey Lions Club social and meal that will be held later in May.

the air, and the Pentagon Memorial. They did not get to see the Capitol though. It was on lock down. Edith was especially impressed with the Womens Memorial. After that, they were taken by bus to the airport, with police escort. This was the weekend of the Cherry Blossom Festival and with all the crowd, both were

grateful for the police escort. They boarded the plane at 5:30 pm and were fed on the plane. It was there that they had mail call. There were letters from friends and family that were distributed to the veterans. They got to read them as they flew back to Texas. Just like when they were in the service, they compared who got the most letters. Back in Austin, there was another reception for the World War II veterans. A group sang Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” made a favorite of all Americans by Kate Smith during World War II. Everywhere the people wanted to just touch them, shake their hand, and one lady kissed A. G. he admitted. A. G. was impressed that the people care so much and just wanted to reach out to touch the veterans. Each veteran was given a book about the World War II Memorial called “Jewel of the Nile,” and a World War II medal. Earl Morse and Jeff Miller are the Co-Founders of the Honor Flight, a non-profit organization. The web site for the Honor Flight program that A. G. and Edith took is honorflightaustin.org and the phone number is 1-888-530-8880. Or you can write to them at 815 A-Brazos Street, UPS Box 498, Austin, Texas, 78701-2514. This was a real treat for two World War II veterans from Leakey and they do highly recommend that if possible, other veterans should go.
