Members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Caddel-Smith Chapter, met to eulogize recently deceased members on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Chapter members and families of Emalee McNiel Carruthers and Edwa Clara “Sammie” McCauley gathered in the McNelly Room of First State Bank of Uvalde to participate in a candle-lighting ceremony. The program began with a welcome from President Judy Burleson followed by The Lord’s Prayer, in unison, led by Chaplain Beverly Langford. Chapter Registrar Mary Dale Brewer read the names of the deceased Daughters as First Vice President Jakelynn Crawford lighted a single white taper in her honor. Chaplain Langford then read “Softly” by Colin Gordon-Farleigh. The poem reminded all that our loved ones are “always near...unseen...unheard (but) so very near...” Member Cheryl Carruthers Ratcliff shared memories of her mother who served the Caddel-Smith Chapter as Historian for approximately twenty years, providing her artistic talents in the chapter history books. Several of her history book entries won awards at the

The Spirit of ‘45 Spirit of ‘45 Pierce Kellogg tells it like it is. He was told that if he didn’t join the service, in a week he would be drafted. So, he joined the Navy in Hawthorne, California. He got his basic training in San Diego, 8 weeks of it, and then he was on a ship headed for Hawaii, the year was 1942. He got in on the end of Guadalcanal, then was off to New

Caladonia, and so many other islands he couldn’t even remember them all. Sent then to Washington, D. C., it was decided to have rockets aboard ship. The men needed to know how to use them. Then he went to Fort Pierce for schooling, Boston for LCSL, and then to the Panama Canal in February ‘46. For his service to his country, Kellogg was awarded a Bronze Star. When he got out, he headed back to

Uvalde where he moved houses, worked for Julian Dart at the airport, where he also got his private pilot’s license. He got a job in Odessa where he worked in the oil fields, then on to Palestine, he worked for H B Zachery, hauled livestock for 13 years, and did trapping in Kinny County, finally working at the Uvalde Test Track. He is quite a spinner of tales that happened to him in the military, but swore me to secrecy about most of them. All told, I had the impression that he never regretted a thing he did for his country, nor in his civilian life.

State Conventions during her terms of office. Emalee Carruthers came to the area in 1922 and settled with her parents in Crystal City where she taught in the public school system for 35 years before retiring to teach another 10 years teaching kindergarten at the First Baptist Church. She joined the Caddel-Smith Chapter November 20, 1979, where she influenced so many. Her qualifying ancestor was James Hodges, and she had eight supplemental ancestors to her credit. New members Sandra Caddel Martin and Dianne Caddel McHugh attended their first meeting and are nieces of Mrs. Sammie McCauley. Sandra spoke about her aunt and shared photographs with members during lunch. Mrs. McCauley was a charter member of Caddel-Smith that organized in March of 1977. Her ancestor was Andrew Caddel, one of the men for whom the chapter is named. The ceremony concluded with a prayer by Chaplain Langford. NASHVILLE RECORDING ARTIST NICK VERZOSA IN TOWN! Nashville, TN-(March 25, 2014)-It’s been two years since Nick Verzosa and The Noble Union have released any new material. The demand for their live show has kept them plenty busy, drawing big crowds across their native state of Texas and gaining them a reputation that now borders on cult status. The word-of-mouth affair surrounding the band’s arrival in every town can be experienced directly in their 2013 live recording LIVE AT THE THIRSTY ARMADILLO. While fans are still chewing on that, Nick Verzosa and the Noble Union will drop some new provisions in the form of their brand new EP LOVE IN PRINCIPLE, out on April 15th. A special CD release party will happen at the Buckhorn Bar in Leakey, Texas on Saturday, April 26th. LOVE IN PRINCIPLE is just a taste, an appetizer to whet the appetite for their

full length album release in the fall of 2014. This six-song EP is coproduced by Verzosa and multi-dimensional artist, AJ Vallejo, who is recognized not only for his success in the notorious Austinbased rock band Vallejo, but also for his production chops on projects that include Jessica Kellner from NBC’s “The Voice,” and American Idol alumni Kendall Beard. AJ also stars as producer on the band’s debut music video for their first single “Love On It.” Verzosa’s growth spurt as a songwriter has never failed to attract the attention of major players in the songwriting game, and music connoisseurs who prefer finely aged and intelligently crafted songs over cheap cliché anthems. LOVE IN PRINCIPLE is a strong message of that four letter word that encompasses all of the higher qualities of the human condition.

The belief and support surrounding Nick Verzosa and the Noble Union boasts a pedigree of great distinction including Walt Wilkins who produced the band’s first EP THE SMOKING GUN in 2010 and their first full length album SHE ONLY LOVES ME in 2011. Combined, these two noteworthy efforts brought in five Top 40 singles on the Texas Music Chart establishing the College Stationbased band as a respected contender in the race for stardom. “I love Nick Verzosa. Big heart, soulful voice, hard worker and a good man to ride the river with. I dig his writing too, and always look forward to hearing what he’s into and up to next.” -Walt Wilkins Killing it on the live music circuit tackling an upwards of 200 shows a year, Nick Verzosa and the Noble Union have never met a music venue they didn’t like

and have never left the stage without acquiring a room full of newly dedicated fans. Is it the classic country throb that pulsates off the Richter scale in their drivin’ tunes? Is it the rockabilly attitude that wafts off the stage weakening the proud spirits like school kids to peer pressure? Is it the clever lyrical prose that instantly downloads into your internal jukebox and plays on repeat? It’s all of it, and the growing buzz is contagious. Fans are responding quite nicely to Verzosa’s kind of medicine. “I can’t afford a therapist. My music is the best kind of therapy I’ve got.” Nick Verzosa and the Nobel Union are: Nick Verzosa (lead vocals and rhythm guitar); Matt Gracy (lead guitar); Dan Poole (drums and harmony vocals); Shawn McGee (bass and harmony vocals). see ad page 13
