GROW WITH GRACE… COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT By Elaine Padgett Carnegie
Grow with Grace… I liked that moniker someone mentioned at the Community Economic Development Meeting held by Charlie Reagor at the Pecan Farm last Thursday. Really, it was a kind of Meet and Greet where the people in attendance were able to voice their concerns and their vision for our Community! I believe the group of individuals working on this should be commended for their efforts to involve the Community in the future of our County. Mr. Reagor talked about things like goals, vision and desires… He asked what “we” would like to see happen in our community. He asked for input and he got it! The concerns of the community members attending the meeting ranged from affordable housing to water quality and quantity, our night skies, our Emergency Services, Law Enforcement, lack of
childcare, City Ordinances, River Crossings Control, Property Values, Clean up, Taxes… of course! Services and Medical Care were discussed, a Hotel Tax, what Annexation could mean for the income of the City, the River and an Emergency Services District. No plans were made, of course. These meetings are to find out what this Community cares about. Meetings will be held on different issues in both the Frio and Nueces Canyons. I strongly urge you to go to the meetings. Tell people what affects your life… what you care about and what kind of vision you have for Leakey, TX. Think about what you want to leave to your children, get involved! To assist us in making those determinations, it is essential that we understand the importance of the issues and what they mean for the future of our area.

Today’s Weather
Beginning next week, each week we will run an article informing you about different aspects of this development. For instance, the history of the River and when it lost the “Pristine” designation…why it was lost and the Federal funding that was lost with it. Did you know that a Hotel Tax can be used for tourism, a Visitors Center in Leakey or maybe to rebuild the Mission in Campwood? Did you know that if someone wanted to open a junk yard on Main Street… they certainly can open it, along with a strip club or adult store right in downtown Leakey! There are no ordinances in place to prevent this from happening! The “writing is on the wall!” Like it or not, Leakey is changing. The only question is “HOW” will it change? Watch for the schedule of future meetings.
