Water News and River Flows Flows at all crossings on the Frio River were taken on November 17th, 2016. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 36,825 gpm in October and now has a flow of 26,854 gpm; this is a reduction in flow of about 27%. Several of the pipes at this crossing are clogged with gravel and it is going to take another large flow of water to get them cleaned out. The pipes on the south end of the crossing have water but the flow is greatly reduced due to the amount of gravel present. The Leakey Springs crossing had a flow of 5,139 gpm last measurement, and a flow of 4,659 gpm this reading; a 9% decrease in flow since the last measurement. The Mill Creek Crossing is the other crossing that showed a reduction in flow this measurement it showed a slight reduction of about 3% in flow since the last measurement; there are culverts on the south end of this crossing that continue to have no flow. This crossing has a flow of 11,412 gpm this measurement which is down from the last measurement of

11,749 gpm. On the west prong of the Frio River, the Rancho Real crossing had a flow of 14,256 gpm in October compared to a flow of 7,673 gpm this measurement dropping around 53% since last month. This is what happens when you get over 11 inches of rainfall one month and no rainfall the next month. The Kent Creek crossing also showed a decrease in flow since the last measurement getting back to close to a normal flow of 2,525 gpm this month down from a flow of 3,472 gpm last measurement. The Nueces River flows were taken on November 16, 2016. McDonalds Crossing was flowing at 44,348 gpm last measurement and decreased to a flow of 34,211 gpm this measurement or a decrease of about 23%. This crossing has several pipes that are reduced in flow at this time with gravel or tree stumps clogging the pipes. The gravel should work its way out but not sure about the tree stumps they may be an issue for some time and may cause some stress on the crossing.

Last Chance to Recycle Electronics for Free in Real County by Bill Sames

For the past two and a half years, Keep It Real-ly Beautiful (KIRB) has been accepting (without charge) and recycling electronics in Real County. Most of the electronics came from unwanted items left at local thrift stores, were received during special E-recycling days, collected through the annual County Cleanups, or were dropped off at Rio Brewster Waste Management for recycling through KIRB. Thus far, KIRB has recycled more than 20 tons of electronics. Unfortunately, the company that recycles electronics in Texas announced in mid-November that they would no longer pay for electronics or pay for shipment to their processing facility in Mesquite, TX. They announced fees associated with recycling electronics as well as shipping costs. KIRB does not have the resources to cover these costs, so the free electronics recycling program is ending. The company will not start the new rates and procedures for a few weeks. Also, the company will send one more

truck to pick up electronics in our area. KIRB received a tentative date for that truck to be in Real County. Based on this KIRB will accept (without charge) qualifying electronics through Monday, December 5th. KIRB may stop accepting electronics if the truck comes earlier than expected. Therefore, don’t wait until the last minute to bring in your electronics. Rio Brewster Waste

Management (FM 337 West, across the street from the post office) is the official location to take your unwanted electronics. They will receive and store the electronics for KIRB. They receive electronics between the hours of 9: 00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. After December 5th, Rio Brewster Waste Management will announce its charges for receiving electronics.

“Neighbor Helping Neighbor” is the theme of Bandera Electric Charitable Foundation’s OPERATION ROUND UP” Operation Round Up is organized for charitable and educational purposes including the distribution of grant funds to qualifying individuals, family units, groups and organizations in the counties comprising The Bandera Electric Cooperative service area. The Operation Round Up program is made possible through the generous donations of BEC members who elect to round up their electric bill each month. The rounded up monies are placed into the Bandera Electric Charitable Foundation fund. These monies are accumulated and disbursed by the Foundation’s board of directors, with one director each of the 9 BEC districts. The Frio Canyon is represented by Betty Jo Bates. Bates encourages everyone to sign up. “It is so easy and does hurt one bit! You probably have more change scattered on the floor board of your car than

what your annual donation to Operation Round Up would be.” Bates said that last year their total donation from their 3 meters was less than $12! Bandera Electric Cooperative services approximately 33,618 electric meters in BEC service area. Frio Canyon (Leakey, Rio Frio, Concan and surrounding areas) represents approximately 4,292 of those meters. To date approximately 100 meters have been signed up in the Frio Canyon area. In the spirit of charity and thanksgiving, please sign up TODAY. You can call Bandera Electric at 866-226-3372, email k.delafuente@banderaelectric.com, go to the BEC website banderaelectric.com and click on Charitable Giving or go to the Leakey BEC office on Wednesdays from 10AM-2PM and just say “I want to sign up for Operation Round Up”. You may also contact Betty Jo Bates at 830-232-6262.
