CONSTRUCTION WILL SOON BE A PART OF DAILY LIFE by Julie Becker
Construction has begun on the “Concan Bridge.” Traveling from Hwy. 83 South to FM 127 to Hondo has now become a little bit more difficult. Pictured far right is the most recent view of workers drilling the pylon posts into the river bed for the footings of the new bridge. Construction began on November 6, 2014 and is expected to be completed in 190 days at a cost of 3.1 million. RELMCO, INC. was awarded the contract. The Highway 83 project through Leakey has also been submitted for bids. The TxDOT website lists the total cost as 5.9 million. The contract description list 225 day as the working schedule. Bidder #1 is Allen Keller at 6.9 million; Bidder #2 is Reece Albert, Inc. with a 7.89 million bid; Bidder #3 is Hunter Industries, LTD. at 9.5 million and Anderson Columbia Co., Inc. was listed as Bidder #4 at 9.7 million. The City of Camp Wood is also undergoing some major downtown renovations. Pictured right, all new sidewalks and awnings are being constructed. The project has progressed well and should be completed soon.

River flows were taken on the Frio River and Nueces River on December 10th and 11th with a majority of the crossings showing an increase from the last measurement. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 7,538 gpm (gallons per minute) last measurement and now has a flow of 7,807 gpm. This is approximately a 10% increase in the flow. The Leakey Springs Crossing had a flow of 3,057 gpm last measurement and a flow of 3,433 gpm this reading which is about an 11% increase of flow. The Mill Creek Crossing showed a slight increase in flow since the last measurement; it is flowing about 3% higher than the last measurement, there are culverts on both ends of this crossing that have no flow reading, this crossing has a flow of 5,252 gpm this measurement up from the flow last measurement of 5,078 gpm. On the west prong of the Frio River; the Rancho
Real crossing had a flow of 4,087 gpm this reading compared to a flow of 3,107 gpm last measurement or about a 24% increase. The Kent Creek crossing showed a decrease since last measurement with a flow of 555 gpm this month down from a flow of 672 gpm last measurement or about a 17% decrease in flow rate. Nueces River flows were taken on December 11th with similar results as those found on the Frio River. McDonalds Crossing was at 8,113 gpm last measurement and increased to a flow of 9,277 gpm this measurement; or an increase of about 13%. The Nueces River Dam on Highway 55 south of Camp Wood had a flow of 8,188 gpm last reading and increased to a flow of 11,811 gpm this month or about a 30% increase. Lady Jackets Win SWTJC Tourney submitted by Wayne Carter

The Sabinal Lady won the SWTJC basketball tournament on Dec. 6 in dramatic fashion by defeating the Knippa Lady Crushers 49-48 with a last second shot by Jordan Jones at the buzzer. Jones led the scorers with 16 points against Knippa. Other scorers: Miranda Robles 10, Valarie Verstuyft 9, Liza Escalante 7, Victoria Tristan 4, Hannah Carter 2, and Madison Smart 1. In the Semi-finals against a very good Nueces Canyon team, the Lady Jackets prevailed 42-34. Leading scorer was Hannah Carter with

The Spirit of ‘45 Ignacio Gamboa, Jr. was born in Dilley to Ignacio and Ruberta Gamboa, Sr. in 1921. Because he was a small child during the Great Depression, making ends meet was tough in those years. He was able to go to school and completed the 6th grade even though his parents moved around a lot working the fields. Finally they landed a job on a dairy, and things began to improve. He served his country in the U S Army from January, 1942 to December, 1945 and received his honorable discharge at Fort Sam Houston. His rank was Private 1st class. He was in Australia and New Guinea, but did not speak about the war, nor his role in it, to the family. He then met the love of his life, Alicia Costilla of Devine, through a family member. They were married on July

28, 1947, in Pearsall at the Frio County Courthouse. He had joined the Army Reserves when he got out of the service, his unit became active, and he got called back during the Korean War. He also went to school on the G I Bill, receiving training in Hondo in auto mechanics and small engine repair. He then got a job at Kelly Air Force Base and worked there for 35 years. He worked in reclamation and later retired as a supervisor in reclamation. Still wanting to keep busy, he then opened a small engine repair shop at home. He also drove the school bus for Devine ISD, as well as transferred cars for Brown Chevrolet in Devine. He retired from his many varied occupations at the age of 82.
