CONSTRUCTION, CONSTRUCTION, CONSTRUCTION Over the past year the face of our communities has changed but the majority of the changes are still to come. This past week downtown construction was in preparation of the City of Leakey/ Nueces River Authority Wastewater project. Michael Collard, NRA Utility Director said the substantial Completion Date is February 7, 2016, Final Completion Date is March 8, 2016. The plan for construction so far will be as follows: · Installing pipe for HWY crossings for RR 337 @ Timbers, RR 337 @ Mountain St., HWY 83 @ 5th St.
Hwy 83 @ RR 1120 Installing pipe parallel to HWY, from Mountain St. on RR 337 to Timbers St. This is on the south side of HWY. The specific routing of the sewer pipe on private property (service / Lateral piping) for the commercial customers will have to be ultimately determined by investigations site by site, which have not be conducted at this time, and will likely have to be a cooperative joint venture by and between the NRA, property owners and possibly their contractor/s. This work will not be
performed by our project / contract specifically, but by the private property owner. As far as cost to perform the work, until property owners asks for quotes form a contractor to perform the work in question we will not have an exact dollar amount to perform the work on the private property. At this point it would behoove the property owners to start thinking of the location of their sewer piping and septic tanks, or finding if unknown, and making a sketch so they can convey what they do know of its location to

the NRA and how to route piping to property line at the streets edge. This will allow the NRA’s contractor start planning where to place connections in the NRA’s sewer main in the street so it can be routed to the property line which is where the private piping (service / Lateral piping) will make connection to us. Please remember, find an alternate route to your daily destinations to avoid the construction.
Electronics Recycling a Big Step in the Right Direction for Real County: Cardboard is Next! by Bill Sames
On November 14th, Real County’s Keep It Real-ly Beautiful (KIRB) completed its 4th electronics recycling round up with 25 people dropping off unwanted electronics. Collections through the Big Springs and Humane Society Thrift Stores plus the collections on November 14th resulted in the recycling of 86 Cathode Ray Tube (CRT-type) TVs and computer monitors, 192 cubic feet of microwaves, printers, cell phones, and computer cables, and an additional 96 cubic feet of flat screen TVs, monitors, and computers. This material weighed 6005 pounds and was shipped on 22 pallets to a processing facility in Fort Worth, TX. Volunteers for this event were: Christy, BJ, and Mia Mensi, Debbie Walker, Brenda Evans, Patricia Chisum, Carrie and Scott Chisum, Pat and Don Wazel, Eileen Bell, Helen and Eddy Stephens, Richard Low, Joe Wells, Mary and
Mike Forman, and Bill Sames. If you want to recycle electronics (working or not), please take them to either the Big Springs or Humane Society Thrift Stores; they select the ones they want to sell, then recycle the rest through KIRB. Keep It Real-ly Beautiful thanks Burk Feed and Real Building Supply for providing pallets and to Chisum Construction for loading the palletized electronics onto the truck. Keep It Real-ly Beautiful was organized in 2014 and is increasing its activity in the local community. With its electronics recycling success, KIRB started accepting cardboard for recycling. Beginning in September, KIRB conducted a pilot cardboard collection program to test how they would accept and process donated cardboard. Five local businesses were given the opportunity to bring their cardboard to a collection site. continued page 3

Uvalde de las Encinas Chapter members, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), meeting at El Progreso Library in Uvalde on Saturday, November 21st, welcomed three prospective members who are in the process of sending their applications to the state registrar and planned a December 12th Christmas Party to be held at the home of Toni Hull. New prospective members are Chris Lacey and Jewel Rossler, and Yvonne Quigley is a transfer member. Twenty members attended the meeting, and Regent Lawrence recognized the three prospective members as guests. The reports given by Secretary Diane Carrillo and Treasurer Sharon Hubble were approved as read, and Registrar Patsy Edwards reported that the paperwork for the prospective members is almost complete. Jakelynn Crawford read Lynn F. Young’s President General’s Message which emphasized the early history of NSDAR and its goals “to gather materials for history, preserve souvenirs of the Revolution, to study the manners and measures of those days, to devise the best methods of perpetuating the memories of our ancestors and celebrating their achievements.” She also thanked members for their devoted service to God, Home, and Country. The National Defense Report, read by Diane Dooley, discussed “Items left at the Wall,” a virtual collection of nearly 400,000 items left at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) by visitors to the site since its dedication in 1982. Regent Betty Lawrence discussed the display of the Tribute to Vietnam Veterans, which has been on display in Camp Wood, Utopia, Uvalde, Del Rio, Pearsall, Brackettville, Sabinal, Leakey and Crystal City and is in Carrizo Springs for the month of December. continued page 3
