NEW LEAKEY CITY COUNCIL MEMBER by Julie Becker At the Leakey City Council meeting held on Monday, Roel Gonzalez was sworn in as the newest Leakey City Council member. After formally accepting the resignation of former council member John Buchanan, Gonzalez took the oath of office. Council members voted to order an election to fill the expiring terms of the Mayor, two full term council members and one unexpired council member positions. Those positions are currently held by Mayor Harry Schneemann, Council members Carl Jensen and Bob Bowers and the unexpired term held by Roel

Gonzalez. The general election will be held May 7, 2016. In other business, Council members voted 5-0 to not rescind Ordinance No. 146 and will continue the contract with Rio Brewster for trash service inside the Leakey City Limits. Discussion regarding costs of rescinding the ordinance, Schneemann noted would include cost of the performance bond and purchased trash cans. Gonzalez requested verification that in two years the contract for the trash service would go out for bid. Schneemann assured him it would. Council members also approved
an Amendment to the ordinance which lowered the residential service rate to $27 plus tax for weekly a 96 gallon trash can and $13.50 plus tax for a every other week 96 gallon trash can. Schneemann also stated again, “You do not have to use Rio Brewster, you can burn your trash and recycle.” City Secretary Dee Dee Wally reported local Real Estate Agent, Martin Martinez has submitted his application for a full term position on the council. When contacted each of the current members said they too will be running to retain their position on the council.

Real County Commissioners held their monthly meeting on Monday February 8, 2016. Commissioners approved Esser & Co. to manage the FEMA grant recently awarded to Real County and a Letter of Agreement for professional planning services for a Real County Comprehensive Planning Project, which will include a 10 year projection plan. Commissioners approved a service agreement with the Real County Historical Museum. Commissioner Manuel Rubio volunteered to take on the task of reviewing service providers for the County offices trash service. No action was taken on a burn ban, so it remains NO Burn Ban. Commissioner’s approved a resolution authorizing application for Law Enforcement grant from the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division for $125,000. Commissioners approved the sale of fireworks for Texas
Independence Day from February 22, 2016 to March 2, 2016. Commissioners voted to set the county policy for road work done using county personnel and equipment on private property at $250 per hour with a maximum of two hours, minimum of one hour and no hauling of materials will be provided. This policy will effective March 1, 2016. Commissioners entered into executive session to discuss the issue of weapons on the premises of a court of court office, when they returned Real County Judge Garry Merritt made a motion to prohibit weapons at the courthouse, except licensed officers or exempt personnel, Commissioner Joe Connell seconded, the motion passed unanimously. The next Commissioners meeting will be held on Monday March 7th, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Citizens are encouraged to attend.
This past weekend the Hart family, owners of the Historic Leakey Inn and Frio Springs Lodges hosted the Gold Star Parents Retreat Parents of soldiers who were lost in combat joined together for a retreat of bonding, rest and relaxation.. Congratulations Nueces Canyon Junior High Girls basketball team!! DISTRICT CHAMPS!!!! By Coach Allison Burleson
On Saturday, February 6, 2016, the Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers Junior High team traveled to Rocksprings for the 31A Junior High District Basketball Tournament. Teams competing in the tournament with Nueces Canyon were Comstock, D’Hanis, Knippa, Leakey, Medina, Rocksprings, and Utopia. The Lady Panthers entered the tournament as the number one seed with a record of 13-0. Their first opponent was the Rocksprings team. The red and blue teams started the days’ action at 9 o’clock AM sharp. The blue team proved ready to pounce and four players quickly scored 16 points in the first quarter and held the Rocksprings team to zero. At the half, Rocksprings had 4 and Nueces Canyon had 27. In the end, the Lady Panthers won 40-20. Scoring for the game were Zoe Burleson with 17 points, followed by Harleigh Patterson and Paige Elliott each with six points, Abigail Sellars with five points, Jasmine Carrillo with four points, and Helen Perez with two. Also playing was Cadence Balderas. This win would put the girls in the championship game later in the day. The teams from Knippa and Leakey squared off
next for a chance at the championship game against the Nueces Panthers with Leakey coming out the victor. The Lady Panthers were motivated and ready for the final game of the season after a long day of waiting. The panther team once again started off with a quick lead and held the Leakey Eagles scoreless in the first half with a score of 22-0. The girls’ best quarter was the third where they put up thirteen more points and allowed only one basket for the Leakey team. Leakey would connect with the net only two more times by the end of the game, bringing the final score to 41 to 6. Burleson once again led her team in
scoring with 30 points. Point guard Elliott had five points and Carrillo, Perez, and Sellars each added two. Rounding out the team were Balderas and Patterson. The District Championship was the icing on the cake to an undefeated season for the JH Lady Panthers!

Uvalde Native Photographer Earns Masters Degree in Photography DOMINIQUE LAMONTAGNE HARMON, daughter of Leo & Barbara Lamontagne of Leakey, Texas and owner of Captivated Images in Lubbock, Texas was recognized for superior image making and photographic service with a degree from Professional Photographers of America. HARMON has earned the Master of Photography Degree from Professional Photographers of America. The degree was presented to HARMON by PPA President Michael Timmons, M.Photog.M.Artist.Cr., CPP, F-ASP at the association’s
