Ten high school students in Pioneers Youth Leadership were awarded $24,000 in scholarships and cash awards last week at the Capital Farm Credit Rural Youth Entrepreneurship Competition at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Jessica Dong from Knippa (rainwater collection business) and Steeley Smith from Mason (local meat processing business) each received a $10,000 scholarship. “Participating in this competition has given me confidence that I can successfully start and run a business in my hometown,” said Steeley Smith. “I was able to learn so much about the positive impacts of rainwater collection through my research,” said Jessica Dong of Knippa.

Imagine the Future of the Hill Country

The last in our series of The New Face of the Real County Sheriff’s Office covers the dispatchers of the Sheriff’s Office. Pictured left to right Elbert Shipman, Johnathan Ramirez, Ken Manchester and Kelly Perez. Elbert Shipman has worked with the Real County Sheriff;s Office for 10 months, he previously worked for 3 years in the restaurant business and as an aid for Cedar Hills for several months. He was born and raised in Camp Wood and currently resides in Leakey. Johnathan Ramirez has worked with the Real County Sheriffs Office since December 2014, previously he served in the

United States Army as a combat engineer for four years. He was raised in Leakey. Kelly Ann Perez is our newest hire. she was hired in January 2015, she previously worked at River Point and HEB in Kerrville. She was raised in Rocksprings and moved to Leakey at an early age. Ken Manchester, Sheriff’s Assistant, has worked as a dispatcher/jailer since June 2009, previously he served in the United States Navy for 15 years. He was born and raised in Homestead, FL.He moved to Leakey in 2008. Remember when you call for help these are the folks that you will talk to and send help your way!

The Caddel-Smith Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, met on Thursday, February 12, 2015, in the McNelly Room at the First State Bank of Uvalde with 25 members present, and were led on a virtual tour of the Texas State Cemetery by members Kristi Powers and Jakelynn Crawford. The video production highlighted the history of the cemetery and some of the famous people buried there, including Stephen F. Austin, considered by historians as the Father of Texas. The cemetery is located on 22 acres just east of downtown Austin, and contains some 900 graves of prominent Texans and over 2,000 marked graves of Confederate veterans and widows. It was originally the burial place of Edward Burleson, Texas Revolutionary general and Vice-President continued page 2

The Spirit of ‘45 James Arthur “Jay” Howard, Jr. was born in Brice, Texas, at home, which was located in the middle of a cotton patch, son of James and Notie Howard. He graduated from high school, then enlisted in the Navy in 1943. Boot camp took two months, then he went to the New Hebrides and then on to Guadalcanal for 16 months. He was attached to Squadron #1 Photographic Intelligence, the first of its kind. They flew planes and took pictures. From those pictures, the military could determine where there were gun emplacements and where to bomb most effectively. The reports were sent all over the South Pacific. He was next stationed at Corpus Christi for a year and then to Nashville, Tennessee a year. His rank was yeoman and he worked for a while at the seperation center in the chaplain’s office. After discharge, he went to school at Clarendon Junior College. He also attended a photographic school in Dallas. He had a photography studio in Memphis, Texas,

but sold it after a year. He went on to get his bachelors degree at West Texas State, now known as West Texas State A & M. He became an instructor on systems of aircraft at the Amarillo Air Force Base during Korea. Going to night school, he got his master’s degree in psychology and counseling. When the base closed, he went to the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base and worked there a year. He went to Lybia as an advisor to the Lybian Air Force. During their short war, he was evacuated. But after about a month, he went back to finish his job, then returned to the States. Next, he became an advisor to the Thai Army in Bangkok, Thailand. He advised from Laos to Malasia, border to border. Then he returned to Lackland AFB. He next became advisor to the 5th Army Reserve program at Fort Sam Houston; 2 years with the Defense Department. continued page 2
