Governor Greg Abbott announced an effort to strengthen penalties for crimes committed against law enforcement officers – the Police Protection Act. “At a time when law enforcement officers increasingly come under assault simply because of the job they hold, Texas must send a resolute message that the State will stand by the men and women who serve and protect our communities,” said Governor Abbott. The proposal is punctuated by making it a hate crime for anyone to commit a crime against a law enforcement officer out of bias against the police. The Governor will request the Texas legislature to pass the Police Protection Act in the 2017 legislative session. “While our state and the nation continue to mourn the heroes lost in Dallas, it is time for us to unite as Texans to say no more,” Governor Abbott continued.

“The men and women in uniform risk their lives every day to protect the public, and it is time we show them the State of Texas has their back. Texas will no longer tolerate disrespect for those who serve, and it must be made clear to anyone targeting our law enforcement officials that their actions will be met with severe justice.” Governor Abbott’s Police Protection Act includes the following proposals: Extend hate crime protections to law enforcement officers; Increase criminal penalties for any crime in which the victim is a law enforcement officer, whether or not the crime qualifies as a hate crime; Create a culture of respect for law enforcement by organizing a campaign to educate young Texans on the value law enforcement officers bring to their com-

munities; For example, under current law, assault with bodily injury is generally punishable as a Class A misdemeanor, while assault on a public servant, including a law enforcement officer, is a 3rd degree felony. Under Governor Abbott’s proposal, in cases where the assault is on a law enforcement officer, the penalty would increase to a 2nd degree felony. “The recent shooting in Dallas is not the first time law enforcement officers in Texas have been targeted. Our goal is to do everything possible to make it the last,” added Governor Abbott. Law enforcement organizations in Texas offered the following statements in response to Governor Abbott’s Police Protection Act: continued page 11

MADAME BUTTERFLY RISTORANTE ITALIANO IN CAMP WOOD, TEXAS by Julie Becker

Date night with my husband was a treat this week. I had heard about the new Italian place in Camp Wood, Texas, so I made reservations. It was wonderful, it was as if we had traveled to Italy when we closed the door behind us. The decor, the smell, the music, it was perfect. Madame Butterfly Ristorante Italiano is owned and operated by Rory and Chele Stewart. Rory is originally from S. Africa and Chele from California. Chele was in the corporate world as a CFO and Rory owned a Pro Per legal business. They purchased land and moved to Texas in 2014. When they saw the need for someplace special for anniversaries, date nights,,, etc. Rory decided to use his prior custom bulding

skills to build a labor of love for Chele. So they found a building and Rory gutted the building down to 4 bare walls and rebuilt what can only be called a little piece of heaven in Camp wood Texas. Once you walk in the door you have to look back outside to make sure you are still in Camp wood. The Ristorante is very quaint and only has 7 tables to make sure you receive the best service. Chele has always loved to cook even as a child her great grandfather who came from south Italy would teach her all his special Italian recipes. She has many fond memories of those times and huge dinners with her great grandparents and later in life with her children. She never knew how many would be seated

Nueces Canyon’s Gabby Irwin All Star Over the past week, Nueces Canyon Girls Basketball stand-out, Gabby Irwin, represented Nueces Canyon Girls Basketball in two separate All Star Games. The first was the WTxBC Concho Valley All Star Game held at the Junell Center on the ASU Campus on Sunday July 10th. Irwin represented her region well while being the first and only Junior competing in the game of Seniors. Irwin made things happen on the offensive end by dishing out 4 assists, taking 4 trips to the foul line where she converted on 5 of 8 free throws, and made good on a strong drive to the basket. Irwin’s “Team West” kept the game close until the end, but lost by double digits. Irwin and family then traveled to Arlington to compete in the prestigious and

inaugural Junior class All-Stars voted by the Texas Girls Coaches Association for 4-A and under schools for the entire state. Irwin received good minutes and held her own in the contest, often times handling the ball for her “Blue Team”. She made several hard drives to the basket, being rewarded with foul shots on one occasion. Irwin sunk one of two. She then made good on a slashing, right-handed lay-up. Again Irwin’s team fell short, but had their chances as they missed too many opportunities at the free throw line. Team Blue fell 48 – 55. Nonetheless, Irwin gained invaluable experience rubbing elbows with the best in the state and showing she belongs on the same hardwood as they do. She made N.C. proud.

at the table and sometimes folding tables had to be put up to feed everyone. Chele does all the shopping each week personally to make sure and get the freshest ingredients. All her foods items are organic if she can find it available. Chele says “At Madame Butterfly we never cook with anything that is GMO, artificial, only all natural ingredients. If you have an allergy just be sure to let me know when you make your reservation and I can substitute it for something else.” Madame Butterfly is only open on Saturday evenings from 6-9 and you have to have a reservation. They do not provide wine with dinner but do allow “wine” to be brought in to further enhance your dining experience. Madame Butterfly is a 5 course fine dining restaurant, with mood lighting, soft music, and delicious food. When you reserve your table you have it for the entire evening so you can enjoy your meal at your own pace. I highly suggest you make the trip!!
