TXDOT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON 337 IN LEAKEY
by Julie Becker
Road construction on RR337 West in Leakey began on Monday this week and according to Project Superintendent Tony Magnus of Allen Keller Company it will continue until there are curbs, gutters, sidewalks and a new concrete roadway with shoulders. WOW! It’s been a long time coming, but here we are. Construction this week will entail shoulder lane widening and removal of the old road surface. Magnus said the construction will continue for a couple of months with completion of all aspects of the road save and except the concrete. The roadway will have the base material, which is very drivable, but the concrete will be poured in conjunction with the rest of the project, all at one time. We have been working our way up to this point, so remember....find an alternate route when possible, DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE, be alert for the workers present and be patient. Magnus said “We want to do a professional job and move on to the next job, we want to complete this project in a timely manner.” We look forward to the completed roadway, but remember, be patient!

were flowing really well. The Leakey Springs crossing had a flow of 5,487 gpm last measurement, and a flow of 5,312 gpm this reading; a nearly 3% reduction in flow since the last measurement. The Mill Creek Crossing showed a reduction of about 50% in flow since the last measurement; there are culverts on the south end of this crossing that continue to have no flow. This crossing has a flow of 17,034 gpm this measurement which is down from the last measurement of 35,228 gpm. I expect all of these crossings to be flowing considerably lower and slower when I go back to take measurements in a couple of weeks. On the west prong of the Frio River, the Rancho Real crossing had a flow of 8,516 gpm this read-
flow of about 1%. The Nueces River flows were taken on July 21st and also showed flow rates that are dropping quickly due to the lack of rain and high temperatures. McDonalds Crossing was flowing at 31,842 gpm last measurement and decreased to a flow of 23,262 gpm this measurement or a decrease of about 27%. The Nueces River Dam on Highway 55 south of Camp Wood had a flow of 79,061 gpm last reading and this measurement the culverts had a flow of 42,322 gpm or about a 46% decrease. A word of warning - keep small pets and children away from the culverts at this crossing as there is still a lot of water going through them and they could easily suck kids and pets in. continued page 13

Texas Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 5-7
(AUSTIN) — Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds shoppers they can save money on certain items priced for less than $100 during the state’s annual sales tax holiday. This year, the sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5-7. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced below $100 from sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend. “As families all over our state prepare to send their children back to school, we hope folks take advantage of this opportunity to get the
supplies they need and save some money in the process,” Hegar said. “As the father of three young children, I know how these expenses can add up. This event provides Texas families with some relief from state and local sales taxes.” Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org. This year, shoppers will save an estimated $92 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday. The tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.
